Patty, it’s hard to tell. I don;t think she ever got much exercise. I admit, when it’s snowy out, I don’t walk the dogs. I have joint issues and am terrified of falling. Today, it was nice out so we drove to a school that has sidewalks around it and walked the dogs. We walked for only 15 minutes or so and she barely made it back. I don’t know if it’s due to the hips or what.

I’m going to try the Kinesis GF for Ginger with the next bag. She’s doing fine on the Momentum but I admit that I sort of feel guilty that she is getting grain inclusive LOL

Resurrecting a sorta old thread. HoundDogMom, what can you advise me for Gemma? To recap, she ill be ten in June, is arthritic, holistic vet doesn’t feel any dysplasia. Her front legs look like bulldog legs, if you know what I mean. The vet sys she sees that with dogs that are kenneled a lot. Oh and she has no teeth. I’ve been using the liquid K9 liquid health but not cheap.
Any recommendations for a human liquid or powder I can try? She is not on nothing for pain but does seem lame after a walk. Thanks!

What did your friend decide on? I’d probably start with Dr Tim’s, good food and decent price so as not to sticker-shock her.

I would get a chicken, beef, potato and grain free food. Look in the dog food ingredients forum, for the stickie on top

Solid Gold has their food in the pink bag…I cannot think of the name but they have little bites. You old so put them in a grinder or feed canned or dehydrated

I don’t know how we’d know about palatability unless we eat it. I have dogs that eat anything but the few dogs I’ve had that didn’t eat right away learned quickly that what was in their bowl is all they got. I admit to being jut as mean to my sons regarding food.
You can add stuff to the food but on’t add nothing that you don’t want to continue doing.

Thanks HDM. My dogs don’t ever turn up their noses at anything in their food. Ever. The last dog that did was Tucker when I got a free bag of Natures Variety medallions.

Hi ladies, thanks for the info! Patty answered the question, i think, that i was going to ask. Mine rarely get tripe because I forget about ordering it. I do have a certain amount of beef coming, with tripe, from Hare Today but they won’t be getting beef daily. I was going to ask what to do about the fact they won’t be getting beef daily but I think Patty answered it: 1/2 dose a couple times a week. Gemma will still get them as she is on Bravo Balance for part of breakfast and THK in the evening.
Regarding the kefir, HDM: whats the dosage? I have two 30 pounders and one 22 pounder

Dogs need meat. Unless there is a serious medical condition saying otherwise, please feed your dogs a food that is meat based, not a vegan food.

I can’t answer about what is similar but we adopted a dog that needed to lose almost half her weight. We used Wellness Core’s reduced fat, feeding her the amount for what she *should* weigh.
I am not sure but I thought I heard people say that sometimes the glucosamine that is in dog food is baked away, so to speak; maybe someone can answer this but you may want to give her a separate supplement.

    Mydogisme and KC-Cajun,
Grainfree foods are bound to cost more than grain inclusive foods. Not always but most of the time. Grains are cheaper so foods with grains will be cheaper. You get what you pay for could be said here.
If someone has a dog with issues that require a grainfree food, you can end up paying more with more vet bills if you don’t get a handle on the issue at the start. If someone has a dog that needs grain free and they think that Earthborn is too costly, there aren’t a whole lot of options left. I’m not even sure what grainfrees are cheaper than EB. Taste of the Wild possibly, maybe IF Hi Tek or Victor make a grain free.

Anniebug: why don’t you order it online? Many places sell Acana with free or very cheap shipping. I’ve never heard that about pumpkin helping them feel full; I’ve always used fresh green beans.
I’ve never understood how people think their dogs feel they’re starving. They’re dogs. Most of them will happily “beg” for food but that doesn’t mean they’re hungry.

I’ve dealt with many a UTI in dogs. I can tell you if its something that continues, to make sure the dog gets enough liquid: canned or dehydrated food mixed with kibble (if he eats kibble) and/or warm water added

Thats what I’m hoping, HDM. We’d like to buy 100 pounds of Darwins when we get income tax back; if I get more chicken than anything else, it would make the price better. Ginger can eat it and it’d be nice if Boone could, too. I’m not giving our new gal any Darwins. I still don’t know what caused her to be bound up but she had had Darwins for a few days before it happened. I am just starting to add some Bravo Balance to her meals, to get her used to that.

Melissa: three 4mos old doxies, a litter of 4 week old doxies, two senior doxies (who had nothing to do with the litters so somewhere was at least two mama doxies and one dad), a german shepherd dog and a corgi. Add six cats, the two shelties I met and she talked about other dogs that we never saw. While some can have 8, when you walk into a house and smell it as soon as you walk in, IMO, too many. When we went the first time, I couldn’t wait to take a shower & change clothes. This is an elderly couple who breeds doxies. IMO, it’s a money maker for them and it’s what they do to make ends meet.

You’re right, i should mention it to the rescue but the head of the rescue went to her house five days before we did, to meet the shelties and take their pictures. She never said anything to me so who knows. Didn’t impress me much

Thanks ladies! Melissa, the foster home was pretty disgusting. Too many dogs (she’s a “breeder” as well), has a bunch of cats and the place smelled horrible. I laid down on the carpet to get closer to Mitch and I got wet from cold urine.

You may be right about the good with other dogs thing. Apparently, Gemma & Mitch lived together but you wouldn’t know it from seeing them together.

It doesn’t matter, she’s home now!

I have used PetFlow, Wag.com and Chewys.com for food, with good luck. I oredered from doggiefood.com once…..in November. Ordered eleven bags of a food that was on sale, after two weeks, I cancelled. IMO if the website says it’s in stock, then darn it, send my food. Don’t give me a bunch of lip about it being on backorder.
I also order alot from KVVet (supplies) and for particular stuff, Kurgo.com and Boomerangtags.com

no, we are not pit bulls here but we do love them. I think it’s great that Pedigree does alot for animals but their food is not a good food. The ingredients are not good. If you are on a budget, we can certainly give you ideas for budget friendly dog foods with good ingredients.
