I haven’t fed a kibble made by Diamond Pet Foods in several years (though I did feed TOTW fish recipe In the past) and TOTW is launching an LID line this fall. There are several brands that have chicken free recipes. Search for “No chicken ” or ” chicken free ” in the search box at the top of the page. Some brands are Earthborn Venture, Canidae Pure, Instinct LID, Under the Sun and Whole Earth Farms.

pugmomsandyParticipantEarthborn Venture foods have 325-355 calories per cup.
pugmomsandyParticipantLook into Annamaet Lean, Dr Tim’s Metabolite, Wellness Core Reduced Fat.
September 30, 2017 at 4:57 pm in reply to: 4 star dog food not in Editor's Choice? #104804 Report AbusepugmomsandyParticipantA brand’s 4 star rating (or higher) doesn’t guarantee that it will be an EC brand as there are more qualifiers than just the rating.
/frequently-asked-questions/about-editors-choice/
pugmomsandyParticipantIf you look through the 5 star foods, there should be other low carb options. For instance, Wysong Epigen, Solid Gold Barking at the Moon, Earthborn Holistic Great Plains Feast, Wellness Core (some recipes), Nature’s Variety Instinct (some recipes), Stella and Chewy’s Raw Blend (dry food), Farmina N&D Grain Free, Weruva Caloric Harmony.
Kibble is a bakery product and needs starch to keep its shape. Canned foods can be lower in carbs since they don’t require a starchy binder and they’re probably not as expensive as raw foods.
pugmomsandyParticipantCall the company or email them. That information is not mandatory to put on the bags.
September 18, 2017 at 10:13 pm in reply to: Potato/peas vs. dried ground potato/pea meal #104429 Report AbusepugmomsandyParticipantIt also depends on if you’re looking for a food lower in ash. Foods with high amounts of meat meals can be higher in ash.

To make kibble more tempting, try adding a teaspoon or so of coconut oil.

pugmomsandyParticipantI don’t research sporting/hunting dog diets but it sounds like they had a preference for polyunsaturated fat, so maybe other oils can be used instead of corn.
June 25, 2017 at 10:06 pm in reply to: best food for small breeds and seniors (not adult) #102528 Report AbusepugmomsandyParticipantI just finished up a bag of RAWZ Meal Free and Core Wild Game for my senior pugs and their output has been solid. 2/3 cup a day with some other foods I give as treats.
June 21, 2017 at 6:31 pm in reply to: Safe to feed medium Sized Dog Small Breed Food? #102443 Report AbusepugmomsandyParticipantShe can eat small breed kibble on a regular basis. Numerous brands have small sized kibble or “small bites”. Some of the small/toy breed kibble will have more protein and fat but so will alot of puppy foods (which can be fed to adults) or “all life stage” foods. For instance, if the front of the bag says “puppy” and you turn and look at the back of the bag and it says “all life stages”.
June 21, 2017 at 3:10 pm in reply to: Buy Cheap Generic Capstar at Happy Pet Labs #102434 Report AbusepugmomsandyParticipantYou might look and see if there is a Rescued Pet Adoption League (RPAL) that your shelter can join. The one in my area has a little store but also will mail items at a flat rate, and they will sell in bulk. They have discounted food and supplies.

I’ve used Pro PAC Ultimates Grain Free and Nutrisource Grain Free while fostering and it worked well. Fosters didn’t have any GI issues with transitioning but my personal dogs get around 35% (sometimes more or less) protein and various levels of fat as well. They stay muscular and they’re 10-12, maybe 13 yrs old.
pugmomsandyParticipantHere’s an article about choosing large breed puppy food (in case you haven’t seen it yet). It contains a calculator for calcium and phosphorus.

Texasmills.compugmomsandyParticipantCoconut oil can be enticing. Might try 1/4 teaspoon since she is so little.

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/dog-supplies/food/dry-food/ps/c/3307/28497/28498?s=ts&r=2011
pugmomsandyParticipantAs far as raw coated kibble goes, there are a few on the market already such as Nature’s Variety which has been available for several years. What used to be Pioneer Naturals/Great Life which has been sold recently also had a line of raw coated kibble. Maybe Great Life sold to Sport Dog because Sport Dog Grain Free Elite is very similar to Great Life/Pioneer Naturals. But that is conjecture.
I personally like freeze dried raw coatings for raw benefits but it is just a coating and probably not a substantial part of the overall kibble. A cost breakdown would need to be done to see if raw coated kibble versus kibble with raw mixers would be a savings if feeding just dry foods.
As for the baked part of the question, there are some choices already such as Wellness TruFood, Carna4, Lotus, Oven-baked Tradition and Flint River Ranch which has been bought by (I’m trying to remember the name). It is said that a baked kibble is a less processed product than an extruded product. And some facilities that produce baked kibble (plain baked kibble not with raw coating) are also human food manufacturers as well.
For kibble feeders, it adds another option to plain extruded kibble. For me as a raw feeder, I would get it for convenience, treat balls or boarding a dog. For someone who looks at ingredient sourcing, this company would be a good choice and has many options. I guess it depends on how much money I’m willing to spend at that certain time when I’m browsing in the dog food section or give in to impulse buying.

March 29, 2017 at 5:58 pm in reply to: Commercial Raw or Freeze-Dried That Does Not Contain Fish Oil #97318 Report AbusepugmomsandyParticipantTucker’s Raw, Fresh is Best and Stella and Chewy’s have recipes without fish/oil.
pugmomsandyParticipant@gerald, Did you transition to the USA formula or was it an abrupt change? The recipes are different between the two.
pugmomsandyParticipantLook up the recommended amount of DHA/EPA for the size of your dog and then calculate how much oil contains that amount.

pugmomsandyParticipantI get whole sardines at a Mexican supermarket in the fresh fish section. They range in size from 4-8 inches long. They probably have whole sardines and other fish at Asian supermarkets as well.

pugmomsandyParticipantNutrisource Grain Free has a couple formulas with a higher protein/fat content (31/20).
Nutrisource GF Chicken and Pea, Lamb Meal and Peas, and High Plains Select.
pugmomsandyParticipantWellness TruFood is a baked kibble and is irregular in shape. Looks like broken graham crackers.
pugmomsandyParticipantThe Senior recipe might have less protein or includes plant-based protein boosters. What are you looking for in a diabetic food? Low carbs?
