MemberHi Cameron, I definitely wouldn’t use Good Friends dog food. I didn’t see the ingredients on the site, but with a price of $11.99 for 40lbs, there’s no way it can be a good food. Maybe you could talk your sister into buying something higher quality? I don’t know what her budget is, but if she could spend a little more (maybe you could throw some in) she could get a lot better food. Here’s the site I found for Good Friends- http://www.ruralking.com/pet-supplies/pet-food/dog-dry-food/good-friends-dog-food-kennel-kruncher-40-lb-182666-40.html There are lots of good dog foods that won’t break the bank. I have great luck with Victor. I pay just under $40 for 30lbs of grain free. Their grain inclusive formulas are even cheaper. You can check them out here. http://www.midamericapetfood.com/victordogfood/dogfood.html They have a store locator for stores in your area. There are lots of other budget friendly foods too. Rachael Ray Zero Grain, Pure Balance, and 4health, are good quality too. What stores do you have near you? Do you have Tractor Supply, Costco, Walmart, Petco, Petsmart?

MemberMelissa, I agree. But that is the shelter’s policy. They must get enough donations of foods on their approved list. It is a kill shelter, so I don’t really understand why their so picky. I was kinda shocked the first time I saw their list of approved dog/cat food/litter/cleaning supplies. LOL. Btw I adopted my 3 cats , and my Springer Spaniel from them. 😀

MemberHi Akari, I think it’s great that you donate food to your local shelter. But my local shelter won’t accept cheap foods like Pedigree or Ol’roy. They have a list of approved foods. Stuff like Science Diet and Iams. So if you walked in with Pedigree or a similar food, they won’t even take it.

MemberHave you tried putting your cats food up higher where the dogs can’t reach it? I keep my cats food up on the bathroom counter top. I have two dogs that won’t touch the cat food. And I also have a Dachshund that I know would eat the cat’s food, if he could reach it. 😀 My cats don’t get a chance to eat the dog’s food, because all 3 of my dogs eat their food as soon as I give it to them.
August 20, 2014 at 5:06 pm in reply to: Should I add a canned food as well? #49809 Report Abuse Edit Post VisibilityLabsRawesome
MemberLiz, Here’s my list of 4 & 5 star budget friendly foods. Costco’s Kirkland Signature Nature’s Domain Turkey and Pea Stew $19.99 case of 24 cans. Tractor Supply’s 4health .99 cents per can. Walmart’s Pure Balance grain inclusive $1.00 And Pure Balance 95% meat cans $1.25 per can. All cans are 13oz or more. For kibble I recommend Victor grain free. The kibbles are tiny. And if you can buy it local, it’s a steal at under $40 for 30lbs. It comes in smaller bags as well. If you contact the company, they will send you free samples. Most stores have free samples, as well. http://www.victordogfood.com/

MemberHi Liz, I have great luck with Victor Grain Free. The pieces are tiny. If you’d like to look into Victor, here’s their site. http://www.victordogfood.com/ They have 4 grain free kibbles. At the top of the page is a store locator. I buy it local and pay just under $40 for 30lbs. If you have a Costco nearby, their canned is a very good option. It’s called Kirkland Signature Nature’s Domain Turkey and Pea Stew. A case of 24 cans is $19.99 Both are 5 star foods. 😀

MemberHi Michael, I would pick 3 or 4 from HDM’S LBP list. My dogs do great on Victor, Earthborn, Dr. Tim’s GF. Check her list for specific formulas, that are LBP appropriate. 🙂
LabsRawesome
MemberHey Dori, yeah I guess I used the wrong word. LOL. 🙂 What I meant to say was if a person/dog has a weak immune system it will get it working better. I knew what I meant, but probably no one else did. You explained it much better, Thank You. 😀
LabsRawesome
MemberHey Dori, let me know how the Epicore goes. It’s supposed to really rev up the immune system. If you are ordering the animal formula, it might have a different name IDK. That would be awesome, if they start to carry Victor. It’s a really good budget friendly 5 star food. 😀
LabsRawesome
MemberHi Dori, you’re welcome, I thought maybe the video could answer some of your questions about the product. Victor’s is a great buy for me, since I can get it local. I pay $42.99 for 30lbs of Yukon River. And 30lbs of Ultra Pro 42 is $38.99 $15 doesn’t seem too bad, although it’s always more expensive online than in store. Another option would be to just buy Epicore and add it their meals, like Barbara does. I think she uses the animal grade, and she takes it also, I believe. I think it’s the M Clay that cleared my dogs eyes. Not sure, maybe the combo of all the extra additives they put in Victor. 😀
LabsRawesome
MemberHey Dori, this is the Diamond V that Barbara is talking about. Here’s a video. 🙂 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WV76LfT6hC4 This stuff is in Victor dog food. They have a link to it on their site.

August 2, 2014 at 4:10 pm in reply to: How long to keep canned food in refrigerator #48455 Report Abuse Edit Post VisibilityLabsRawesome
MemberNot to be gross, but I’ve seen dogs eat things that were dead and decaying, enough to make me gag. They will roll all over the dead thing too. The dog was happy an had no ill effects from eating the clearly rotten meat. She did need a good scrubbing tho, as she stunk really bad. I don’t think refrigerating canned food for 3 or 4 days is going to make a dog sick. Seriously.

July 21, 2014 at 8:13 pm in reply to: New Dog – Tick Bites, Loose Stools, Whipworms, Limping #47402 Report Abuse Edit Post VisibilityLabsRawesome
MemberShe pretty much has no choice but to neuter. That’s one of the down sides to adopting from shelters. If you don’t comply with the shelter’s policies, they can, and will, take the dog back. Before you can adopt, all animals in your house must be up to date on shots. That’s one reason I won’t adopt from shelters. They have too many rules. And I am not over vaccinating my dogs and cats for anyone. With that being said, I did adopt my 3 cats from a kill shelter, as well as my Springer Spaniel when he was a puppy. And with 3 dogs and 3 cats, I’m not looking to get anymore pets right now anyway. And also, I really doubt that the groomer will admit to doing anything to the dog.

MemberI definitely would not take him back to that groomer. They obviously either twisted his leg around while clipping his nails, or let him fall/jump off a high table. I never let anyone be alone with my dogs. If they are having any procedures done (besides surgery) I am in the room. I just don’t trust people. Once you get all his test results back, you will have a better idea what is exactly going on with him (heartworm and tick born illnesses) But if you have any more trouble with worms or giardia, I would recommend Panacur. It takes care of 4 different worms, it also quickly clears up parasite related diarrhea. This site sells Panacur really cheap and gets it to you quickly. http://www.revivalanimal.com/Panacur-C-Dewormer-Safeguard.html Please keep him away from that groomer tho. I’ve seen hidden camera footage of a groomer being really rough with dogs, and slapping the shit out of them. 🙁

MemberHolly, you should use Human grade fish oil for your dog. Human grade is higher quality, and has higher standards than pet grade. Human grade is usually much cheaper too. You don’t want your fish oil to smell or taste “fishy” that would indicate that the oil is rancid. I buy human grade fish oil for my dogs, and keep it in the fridge, to keep it fresh.

MemberHi Jonathan , I agree with Betsy. I use Victor dog food, the grain free formulas. I get 30lbs for around 40 dollars. I need big bags because I have 3 dogs. Since you only have 1 dog, and are on a tight budget, you could go for the grain inclusive. Those are around $20 for 20lbs. If you follow the link Betsy left, you can email the company and ask for a free sample. Or call a store in your area, and ask if they have free samples. My 3 love Victor foods.
LabsRawesome
MemberHey Zach, I use Costco’s Kirkland Signature. http://www.costco.com/Kirkland-Signature%E2%84%A2-Omega-3-Fish-Oil-Concentrate-1%2c000-mg.%2c-400-Softgels.product.11072245.html If you scroll down in the link I left, you will see the product details. I keep mine in the fridge, because heat and light will degrade fish oil and turn it rancid.

July 2, 2014 at 10:29 pm in reply to: Vaccines and Over Vaccinating: Do You Agree? Did You Stop Vaccinating? #45919 Report Abuse Edit Post VisibilityLabsRawesome
MemberOkay, well in my other reply to you, I was answering your previous question- “How do I know if my dog has lifetime immunity? And where can I find that info? That’s why I posted info on vaccinations. You can find the info on immunity there. “Here’s some info on titering. I personally think titering is a waste of time, and money. Falling Titers: Oh-oh or No Big Deal? http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/titer-testing-dog/
Testing yearly will eventually show titers that fall off. Does that mean immunity is gone and you’ve got to head in for a “topping up” of the immunity reservoir?
No!
(And stop thinking that a “reservoir” even exists. I actually hesitated writing this word, as I don’t want you to think this is in any way reality).
It only means the antibody levels are waning. And why wouldn’t they? It’s a waste to keep making more antibodies when there’s no exposure to more virus. In its wisdom, the vital force deems its work is done in this area, and stops pumping more antibodies into the blood.
But, the good news is this: cellular memory is still very likely present to the bad guy you vaccinated against and, should your buddy ever be exposed to this virus again, BOOM, the antibody production factory fires up and the titer rises once again, and rather quickly at that.
So, it’d be a mistake to equate a titer that’s fallen with a lack of protection, and a greater one to think you need more vaccinations to re-establish protection. Immunity is still there, quietly, watchfully alert.
[In the older guys, I like to add a nice immune boost in the form of transfer factors, just to be sure their immune systems are acting out of the greatest responsive intelligence. And perhaps that’s a subject for another post.]
Have you used titers? Does this info help? Maybe you’ve even seen this: your animal’s titers kept on increasing for years after you stopped vaccinating! That’s what happened to my colleague’s dog on testing rabies titers. Let us know in the comments.
