I am getting a Borzoi puppy, he’ll be nine weeks old. I would like to feed him Instinct Salmon kibble with a topper of Wellness Core puppy canned. I can’t see a reason not to, as the kibble has been good for my greyhounds, but the plethora of data has confused me. Help!

    Hi Bryana,

I also have a Golden who started out much the same way as yours. I believe the vaccinations may have contributed to some of his early issues. It was my intention to spread vaccines out and I recall once the vet acted like, “Oops, I actually got a combo vaccine ready.” Of course, I let it go. I wish that I had insisted and that I hadn’t gotten unnecessary vaccines. My Golden had an infection in each ear at just a few months old and was at the vet sick with lethargy and diarrhea. I suspected vaccinosis. Yes, the vet put him on the I/D garbage as well. Since I can’t change that now, I only vaccinate for rabies and I titer for immunity to core vaccines.

As for food, my Golden had digestive issues as a young pup also. It seemed everything gave him diarrhea. Plain canned pumpkin can help firm up loose stool. Goldens are known for having sensitive stomachs and food intolerance / allergy issues. I’ve determined that my Golden has food intolerance issues. He cannot have fish, flax, tomato, chickpeas or lentils. He does better with moderate protein, fat and carbs and a bit lower fiber. I’m not suggesting your Golden has these same intolerance / allergy issues, but it’s my guess he’s intolerant of something and what you’re saying is the end product. You have to figure out what they are, which is the tricky part and it takes a lot of time. Can you compare any ingredients in the food he was eating too see if there are common ingredient that could be the culprit?

Also, your Golden is a large breed puppy that has unique nutritional requirements. You must feed him a controlled level of Calcium. You should also avoid over-exercising him to avoid stressing growing joints and you should also keep him lean while he’s growing.

Here’s a link to another thread in the forum that explains this in more detail, read the first few pages at least: /forums/topic/large-and-giant-breed-puppy-nutrition/

On page 36, there is a Google document with a list of foods with appropriate Calcium levels for large and giant breed puppies. It was posted on 10/22/2013, at 4:22 PM by Hound Dog Mom. You should choose a food from this list: /forums/topic/large-and-giant-breed-puppy-nutrition/page/36

One food in particular that I might suggest is Nature’s Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient Diet Turkey.

Ron-sounds like Blue Buffalo works for you. I thought it worked for me too. I fed my older dog Blue Puppy and then Blue Wilderness over the course of 4 years. I thought it was a premium food, and maybe it was at one point. When we got a new puppy Dec 2013 I naturally transitioned her to Blue Puppy and the shit literally started flying, and the barf. And for several weeks I tried everything I could think of to get her used to the food but it stumped me, never had an issue with my older dog. As I read more about kibble in general it horrified me and I tried the new pup on raw. Voila, no more diarrhea and barfing. So I transitioned my older dog to raw and not only did she lose weight taking her off the Blue Wilderness, but her coat got better and she doesn’t even smell like a dog anymore:) In fact, I feel terrible that I fed my older dog only kibble for as long as I did.

So my point is, maybe you have a dog with a great constitution and it works for you, but The Editor’s Choice is just that, it is The Editor’s Choice and there’s specific criteria he looks at. I signed up for a membership so I could keep track of how the kibble I feed a couple times per week ranks on a regular basis, and to see when any new raw foods make the list. If the kibble I use comes off the list I will most likely look at making a change. The information I have found on the forums, and the answers the other members provide, have been invaluable to me for keeping my fur babies healthy.

I thought I responded to you also, but don’t see my comment.

Quickly, before I run, I would definitely feed as if a large breed puppy. Better safe than sorry. Feeding your medium breed pup as if a LBP, poses no risk.

Also, I would add delicate Omega 3’s at the time that I feed rather than looking for a fish based food. Fish based foods oxidize quickly and the risk that rancid fats pose can cause serious health risks, include, but not limited to, pancreatitis. If you must feed a fish based food, buy only the smallest freshest bag that you can find.

    Hello Dog Experts!

I would love to get your suggestions on what would be the best food to get for our new puppy Pearl who is 3/4 Golden Retriever and 1/4 Border Collie mix that the breeder refers to as a Coltriever. We have had her since she was 10 weeks old and is now 13 weeks and weighs 12 lbs and is a very active and happy pup. She is currently on Taste of the Wild Puppy which was what the breeder was feeding and we have switched between the Wild Prairie and Wild Pacific Salmon formulas and she has done well on both but seems to like the Wild Pacific Salmon formula more. She has a long and very fluffy puppy coat still and the Vet suggested having her on a fish based puppy food for both her longer coat and to help with the cancer that is so prevalent in Goldens. My understanding is TOTW is a good food for the price point however, I am looking to find what the best food would be for her. I joined the Editors Choice but the large breed Puppy foods listed were not fish based. I don’t mind paying more $$ as it is important to me to have her on the best food possible. Our vet is not pro Raw food and we currently are not looking to go that direction except for possibly supplementing. If anyone has suggestions on supplements we should be adding I would love to hear those as well! I am also scratching my head on whether I should be doing all dry or a wet/dry combo for her food.
These are some of the suggestions we got from Mud Bay for her dry food (a local high end pet store):
    1. First Mate Puppy
    2. Instinct Salmon (it’s not a puppy formula but they said that it has the same protein and fat ratios as a puppy formula would have)
    3. Acana (they didn’t carry but said was great)
    4. Orijen (they didn’t carry but said was great)
I appreciate the help, the more I research the more confused I get and would love to hear from people’s personal experiences!

I agree completely with the Nut and Marie. I feed my three dogs, one of which was 15 years old last September high quality, high protein foods. All are grain free. I feed a rotational diet to all three and the proteins in the foods I feed vary. The lowest protein I feed is 38% and the highest is around 54%. I’ve been feeding this way for approx. 3 years now and all my dogs are doing really very well. As a matter of fact, since starting the high protein grain free foods my senior is more puppy like than she’d been in the previous years. She used to sleep a lot, had lost interest in most activities and had lost her spunk. As the Nut stated, seniors need more protein not less. It’s antiquated marketing that would have us believe that puppies, adults, seniors, active, less active, yada yada yada all need their own special diets. Puppies would probably do best on an all life stages food with the exception of large breed puppies which need less calcium with the correct ratio of phos. so as to slow (or not speed up) down their growth rate. I don’t have any large dogs but from all I’ve learned on this site I believe what I’m saying about large breed puppies is correct. I may not be wording it correctly. Anyway, seniors do better and need a higher protein food not less.

    Hi Everyone,
I see a lot of people in the past have had issues with diaherria and loose stools. I’m rotate my feeding my 9 month old Bernese mountain dog Dr Tim’s kinesis, innova large breed puppy, and wellness core grain free. All are on the recommended list. Has anyone had any issues with these foods? She also likes to sneak out kitten’s food so I’m wondering if that food could be the culprit. It has been going on for a month but she still seems to be eating and drinking fine.

Oh boy, this’ll be fun lol

Haley and Dweezle: Natural Balance Ultra Small Breed. Only got it because it was $1 a pound after coupons– I’m not very happy with, so after the two bags I have are gone, I’ll not buy it again. However, they like it. But they like anything, regardless of how eatable it is lol They also each get a salmon oil pill in their food. Next will be Wellness Toy Breed Complete Health Senior and Wellness Toy Breed Complete Health Adult, mixed 2:1. These dogs are 60 and 130 lbs, btw LOL after that will probably be Ideal Balance puppy, then Wellness Core Puppy and Small Breed mixed, then who knows. I have a good sized stash to chose from. I try to keep it interesting.

Bentley: SSLL mix, with coconut oil (won’t eat the mix plain, the little brat!) and a nice de-boned raw turkey leg. He gets a random pick of turkey or chicken (bought whole and cut up and separated into white meat, dark meat, and bone-in meat), ground pork, or beef or chicken hearts every day.

Ginger: half Wellness Small Breed Simple Salmon and Potato, and half Wellness Toy Breed Complete Health Healthy Weight. She’ll be moving to Purina Veterinary Diet Joint Mobility when I have the money in my account to order it, her Wellness Simple was running out, so I’ll put it off a bit longer, so she’s not switching arounf too much. Her stomach just can’t handle it. Nothing Purina is my first choice except for a very select few of the canned cat foods due to cost, but I’m at my wits end at what I can do to help her poor old joints, and not break the bank (not that there’s much of a bank to break at this point…). I can get it less than what the same size bag of Wellness is, so it’s worth a shot. Her treats today was a half of an Amoxicillin pill in the morning and tonight. She eats it like it’s the most delicious thing she’s ever tasted, so I just let her think that LOL

Usually they all get some form of Zukes or Pet Botanics treats, but no one got any of those today, except the cat, who did high-fives, shakes, and up’s for his G-Zees treats :p He also got 3oz Wild Kitty raw cat food mix (made with chicken) for breakfast, and a 5.5 oz can of Friskies Ocean Whitefish as a very special treat. I don’t do fish or any other Friskies other than two flavors of Special Diet for him very often, but I’ll grab something fish based every now and then for something that isn’t turkey, chicken or beef. Gotta have something different when your crazy mommy limits you to very specific flavors from very specific brands lol I’ve also been giving Bentley a few pieces of Natures Variety Instinct Raw as a treat a few times a day. He loves to eat the little pieces still frozen. I think he likes the texture, and the fact that it’s red meat, something I can’t afford for his rotation very often. Innova Prime Red Meat used to be his favorite kibble before we realized he had carb allergies and before Innova got bought out.

Just a side note on the Wellness Toy Breed Complete Health forumlas: I’m extremely happy with all of them. Typically, even in the rest of the Wellness line, senior and diet foods are just complete crap, but these are comparable to other puppy and adult grain inclusive foods. They have good protein (close to 30%), and low fat (which is what my three old farts need), and are still high calorie (high 400’s!). Would definitely recommend either of these to anyone with a dog that needs a low fat diet, or to any owner who likes to feed lower fat diet food, small or large breed. It’s pretty decently priced, too, especially if you have coupons 😉

    Hi Michelle R.

My experience with Natures Logic was /is very different. I considered using the brand as my dog is on a diet of venison. I went to the website and was very concerned by what I found. The company inserted words into quotes which changed the meaning of the quotes, and it appeared that they only had one product analyzed and then posted those results for all the products.

I’ve talked with Mr Freeman on the phone and in person. In person was very telling!! I asked him about inserting words into quotes and he looked up and off into the distance, stroked his chin and in with a long drawn out affect said as best I remember “Oh… did I? Gee… I’ll have to look into that” When I asked about the nutrient analysis all looking the same he looked down and started to chuckle and said well yes, he only had one product analyzed, the chicken formula and then just changed some numbers here and there for the others. I asked him about the low Vit D levels in his diets and he told me to let my dog sit at the windows when the sun came through and my dog would make all the Vit D she needed. When I reminded him that dogs only make insignificant amount of Vit D and it is a requirement of the canine he said something like “Of course they make Vit D, probably when the researchers tested them they had the dogs locked up in a room in the dark without any windows.

Pressing onward, I asked him about the calcium levels in his diets and the effect on growth for large breed pups. He said you can feed a puppy all the calcium you want they would only absorb what they needed. When I reminded him that puppies can’t regulate calcium absorption which is why they need a controlled level in their diet he told me to feed a high calcium food and measure the calcium level in the blood .. it would be fine. YIKES !!! So I tried again and reminded him that yes the calcium level in the blood would be normal despite the effect the diet had on the C- cells and calcitonin levels. He didn’t know what those were. Then he handed me a copy of Dog Naturally magazine to use as a reference instead of the NRC Nutrient requirement of dogs and cats. I found that downright scary!

I asked who formulated his diets and what that person’s education was. He formulates the diets and his degree is in marketing. Suddenly it all became very clear!!! He doesn’t know anything about nutrition because he is in the business of marketing not in the business of nutrition!!

Combing that with him telling me he doesn’t do any type of ingredient testing and he didn’t seem sure of what post production testing was done as far as quality control pretty much lowered the boom of doom onto that company for me.

He is good at what he is educated in .. marketing. Well except for promising things he never follows through on. Like posting correct nutritional information on his website. I think it was last year that he told Dr. Mike he had each individual product analyzed and the data would be posted shortly. But the information really hasn’t changed much…. except for a few numbers here and there.

After talking with Mr. Freeman and evaluating his company I can see why the company isn’t on Editors Choice. The food has a great concept but poor execution in my opinion.

This may seem like a stupid question but I was wondering how long I should feed my puppy his puppy food. I’ve seen articles that say as long as 2 years! Could anyone tell me?

When I got my little “thow away” puppy I had no idea what to feed her. She was all of maybe 7weeks old. I knew from my other dog to stay away from Blue (way too high in protein). I thought about wet food, but dislike having to feed that so I thought I’d just try her on what I had my 2yr old on. I gave her Wild Calling. According to the label it’s good from puppies to older adults. I started her on elk, whitefish mixed with a little warm water and she took to it right away. No problem with stools. She is now 7mo old still on Wild Calling (I rotate thru the different tastes). She’s a small one about 9-10 lbs now and I have always given her 1/3cup w/warm water twice a day. If you go on their website I think you can still get free coupon for buy 1 get 1 free.
BTW with chicken broth make sure you dilute it half/half even the low sodium one.

Thanks for your input. Well, I think I’m in line with all you’ve pointed out…….feeding at certain times of the day, feeding within the guidelines of the food, and vitamin supplementation (I give both my dogs the proper amount of Nu-Vet Plus vitamins, daily). Like I mentioned, this little guy might do better with self-feeding, as he use to be able to do, but it’s not really possible with another dog around here.

I’ll give it another day and see how it goes……things could always be worse. Last puppy I had, 4 years ago, was very sick and suffering with almost constant diarrhea for about 3 months. Thought I was going to lose him from dehydration. FINALLY…..by the time the vets (3) decided what it was, the breeder had already sent me the meds to clear it up. Started out with Coccidia and then came the Giardia. The vets were all too afraid to give the meds he needed (Albon and Metronitizole) because of his size, but the breeder knew what was needed and so within 2 – 3 days of following her instructions, he was almost normal again! So what I have going on right now, is nothing in comparison.

I truly believe there’s nothing “wrong” with him, except the “wrong” food. We’ll see though! I hope its that simple!

    Thanks again!

You may want to feed at a certain time and usually a couple hours later it will come out. Mine goes poo 1st thing in the morning and in the evening before bed. The amount of food required for breed, age and size is very crucial. I heard before because my puppy ate them also and eventually stopped as most puppies, that it may be a vitamin deficiency. I know Vets.are costly but a specific test I am sure with knowing this can be done. Feed proper amount of food and save some money…lol. I give half and half through the day.Mine really doesn’t gorge however and is a good self feeder.Good luck in resolving this.My grandparents dog also did this as an adult dog.

Over my entire lifetime having dogs, I’ve never had so many issues popping up one after another…..this is crazy! This latest one is disgusting, I know, but very disturbing!

I’ve had dogs (usually puppies) that have done this before and sometimes pretty determined to do it, but never a sudden onset like this! I’ve had this puppy for a month, never has done this at all, but all of a sudden, I’ve caught him doing it or about to, several times over the past day or two! I keep my yard picked up everyday, and now I have to make sure I get it after every time he goes.

Just so happens, I’ve just recently changed his food (still in the end of transition) to the TOTW PACIFIC stream fish formula, from Victor HI-Pro Plus, and not only do I have NUMEROUS stools, he’s starting to devour them. Trying to cut down on the number of stools, I’ve cut back on the amount of food given, trying to cut him back to 3 meals a day instead of 4 (he was use to free feeding at the breeders, but I can’t do that because I have another dog here), thinking maybe he’s eating too much. Now he seems hungrier through the day and now this poop eating is throwing me for a loop!

What in the world could be causing this? If I take him to the vet, what in the heck is he going to do? Not a thing, I would imagine. I suppose I could start putting “Forbid” on his food, but dont want to keep doing that forever. It has to be something missing or not being digested with this TOTW food……maybe? Maybe I just need to put him back on the Victor?

Geeezzzz……..I’ve had a lot of puppy issues over my life, but this one is just very puzzling, basically because it’s so sudden! And I know, a lot of dogs will do this from time to time, or even regularly, but to me it’s a bad nasty habit that I don’t want embedded in this puppy.

Please give me your input ASAP!
    Thanks,
    Nancy

In reply to: Fiber in puppy food

Thanks for your opinion BCnut, I tend to agree with you. I wonder why they make this puppy formula with such a high fiber; seems like all pups would have this same problem. Although I have noticed a little slow down in water consumption since yesterday afternoon.,Maybe this is a form of adjustment, or maybe it’s not really a good thing. I’ll have to watch him closely today before I decide to do something different. I have cut back on the amount of each feeding though, so maybe that’s helping. Fortunately, I am readily available to him, and make it a regular routine in going outside to relieve himself, we just have to do it more often. Although I have wondered how this affects his urinary system as well. He’s been really doing great on potty training since I got him and my particular set up is much easier than most situations. He just goes to the door and I’m right there to let him out and he’s right there in the spot he needs to go.

I hate to change him back to the Victor; just another change for him right now, plus the holidays are not a good time to have an upset puppy. I might try to locate a small bag of it though and reduce the amount of this new food for awhile longer though. Or maybe replacing some of the dry, with the same formula in the canned, might help too. One or the other should help, without tummy upset, I hope.,

    Thanks again for responding……..

Ok, looks like I’ve got a new issue or problem; maybe. I started switching a 3+ month old puppy over to TOTW’s Pacific Stream puppy formula, about 8 days ago. He was previously on Victor’s Hi-Pro Plus formula. A couple reasons for that, mainly availability of Victor, but he was doing alright on the Victor and was on it when I got him at 10 weeks old.

Anyway, as one other member (that I know of) also reported, I am seeing NUMEROUS stools; many more than while on the Victor. The stools are well formed though, but a bit softer than before. I am assuming that either the fiber content is too high, (the Victor was 3.8% max, while the TOTW is stated as 5%), or in the process of “adjusting”, or I’m over feeding. I was giving 1/2 cup, 3xday, and that’s probably too much…..I’ve cut down to 1/3 cup, 3 Xday. I’ve also been trying to get down to 3 meals instead of 4. Pup is also drinking quite a bit more water, again probably a result of the extra fiber, but of course, also makes potty training a bit more challenging.

My older dog (1 year old) is doing well on the adult version of this same food so far; much better than the Victor which gave her terribly itchy skin. I was trying to keep them both on the same brand and formula, but maybe this much fiber is just too much for the pup.

    Suggestions and advice please.

    Thanks as always!

    Hey all
I need your help with something. We’re bringing home an 8 week old Aussie next week. We have Taste of the Wild for his Kibble and a stock pile of Honest Kitchen Turkey and Aunt Jeni’s Turkey Raw frozen pre-made meals.

In a perfect world I would feed him Kibble in the AM and Raw in the PM so his tummy has time to digest each type of food separately. Though – when he’s a puppy he will be eating 3 or 4 times a day so that complete digestion time won’t be there.

So how do you handle? Rotate days between kibble and raw so every other day is a different type? Is that a bit much for a new puppy to get used to?

Right now the breeder has him on puppy kibble.

    Thanks, guys!

How can I quickly find the best quality of dry lamb food on your website? I feed raw and have for 20 some odd years but my new rescue dog has frequent ear infections so my vet wants her on a limited lamb food for about two months to see which protein might be causing it. I will be feeding fresh lamb meat for one meal but need a dry for the other feeding. Any tips on how to find the best lamb dry on your website? Thanks for doing this website by the way. I recommended it to all my puppy buyers when I was showing and breeding.

When Frosty the Gr. Pyrenees was a pup he ate rocks . The vet said that was very bad & he would need to cut him open if he kept it up . He said he would grow out of it , but that his body craved bricks to build the big dog from & his puppy food ( benifil ) was not getting it done . He said feed him cottage cheese to help build up his bones . I think it worked well , it didn’t take long & he stopped eating rocks . I NOW FEED BONE MEAL WITH PHOSPHORUS with my home cooking , I think that helps the dogs take calcium into their body.

Hello I am new to the forum…very first post! We rescued a lab mix about a month ago….she was at the time 12-14 weeks old. She is a very big girl already weighing 28lbs when we got her. She came to us on Kirkland brand Puppy food and we have kept her on that. After about 2 weeks she woke up one morning in the middle of the night whining to go out. I let her out and she had the runs really bad. This was a Saturday…she had diarrhea all weekend (I kept feeding her not realizing she should be fasting) She was her normal rambunctious self and drinking plenty of water. Took her to the vet on Monday she had gained 4 pounds in a week since her parvo shot the week before. He tested her stool and found nothing wrong. Maybe thought it could have been due to her getting her last parvo shot or it could be food. He put her on a tablet for diarrhea for a week and Purina Probiotic (he way overcharged me for it 40 bucks) the diarrhea went away while she was on the medication. About 36 hours after the pill stopped (today) she has diarrhea again in the middle of the night and twice this morning. I took her off her food and am feeding her boiled chicken, white rice, and pure pumpkin with her probiotic. Trying to figure out what could be the problem. I am assuming its the food. Other than the runs she is very happy, playful, and shows no sign of illness. I haven’t had a dog let alone a puppy in over a decade and need some advice. Please help me if you can. I am struggling since my hubby is out of town for 2 weeks and our vet is far away. Plus our toddler is teething. I am super stressed out.

Hi Nancy – if you are experiencing diarrhea that is a different story. Not sure if all the stools are normal. I sometimes get into trouble with my little dogs if I feed them too much, then they have diarrhea. It is a slippery slope with these issues. Maybe try a different protein source in the food. My puppy was on Diamond when I first got him and doing just fine and when I tried to transition him over to Fromm he had raging diarrhea. I use a probiotic and that helps with digestive issues too. Good luck and I’m glad you are working with your vet and hope you get to the bottom of the weight loss.

I need input on a topic that I’ve NEVER had experience with…..an UNDERWEIGHT dog.

I aquired my daughter’s mini Aussie female puppy when she was about 11 months old. She was raised on Diamond Natural’s dry puppy food. Although she has grown into a somewhat thin lanky adult, she looked alright on the Diamond. However, when it came time to switch her to an adult food, I ended up going with the Victor Hi-Pro Plus (puppy and adult formula), only because a Sheltie puppy I just got, was already on it. So I thought I would finally get away from the Diamond products and for the last few weeks, they were both eating the Victor. I was a bit concerned with the variety of meats in this formula though.

Within the first 2 weeks, I noticed a growing shed and itchiness with the Aussie; actually had to take her into the vet for an allergy shot, which has helped. He suggested a food change, which I have done over the last week; back to another Diamond product though which I don’t like, but for now I’m trying it until I find something better. I am currently switching her over to the TOTW Pacific Stream grain-free formula). The puppy is switching to the puppy formula of that as well.

The shedding and itchiness has improved some, but it’s too soon to know if it’s the food change or the allergy med, but my daughter finally agrees with me that she is getting too thin. So I’m getting a bit concerned about this. While this is normally a pretty active breed, she seems pretty content with my subdued life style (I’m a moderately active 63 year old), and she does enjoy the activity involved with the new puppy. So an excessive activity level is not the issue. I am feeding her about 1 1/4 – 1 1/2 cups/day. I could up that of course, but if I’m NOT feeding the proper food, that will only serve to over-indulge her digestive system, wouldn’t it?

I’ve dealt with “overweight” problems at times, but NEVER an underweight issue. Suggestions, please. ASAP.

    Thanks,
    Nancy

I have been reading this site for the past week, and so far what I understand is to get a good puppy food brand for my new border collie, I’m going to have to spend about $100 per bag. I’m trying to understand the importance of the ingredients, protein above 30%, fat above 19%…. And calcium how am I suppose to figure out how much is too much? I just need some good recommendations for good puppy food, so we can start off right. When we had our siberian husky, and Alaskan malamute, we fed them natures recipe farm select. So I am reaching out to this forum to sharing their experience and their recommendations. Please help a new again mommy. BTW, puppy come Dec 23. Thanks for giving me your attention in advance, and helping by sharing your experience.

Hi. Like a lot of posters I’ve read I want to provide the best nutrition for my baby boy Bentley.

Bentley is a 5 month old (at Christmas) great Dane. Mom weighed 145 and Dad was 175.

I’ve been feeding him Nutro Ultra Giant Breed Adult. My vet said it was just as good as the puppy formula. I’m not quite comfortable with that. 🙂

Question: What’s the best puppy food for Bentley? No issues with the Nutro (Chicken, Lamb, and Salmon) so far and no known health issues identified by the Vet. (Even though he has thrown up some bile the last 2 days – that could be from eating leaves I suppose).

If you have time please recommend a couple. I have looked at the list and while it helps, it’s not getting me any closer to choosing a different food.

THANK YOU for any help you can provide.

Cheers to all my fellow Large & Giant breed owners.

My dog is shedding like crazy… I’m not sure how she still has hair but she doesn’t show any signs of balding or skin irritation.

I’ve switched her to partial raw, made by a local butcher who sources only grass fed and locally raised animals in the tristate area, as well as added some additional fish oil to help with her dandruff. The dandruff is gone now but the shedding remains.

We brush her once per week with a furminator and I use dog baths wipes to help keep her clean between actually baths which I don’t like to do more than once a month.

Has anyone seen Euk causing the shedding? I’ve been thinking about changing her food but the breeder / trainer we purchased her from said he has always fed this with no issues.

    Thanks for the feedback

Hi, I would not be feeding a puppy the Hills i/d food, You dont say if he’s on the i/d low fat restore or just the i/d gastro, the fat% in the i/d restore is only 8.5% way to low for a pup, that’s probably why he was waking thru the night hungry, I know that Hills sponsors Guide dogs BUT please add some premium quaility food with any Hills kibbles…& watch he doesnt become itchy as Hills foods are high in Carbs up to 60% carbs, my boy can’t eat Hills, he starts to scratch & be itchy, Im trying the Hills i/d Low fat restore wet tin food, just for breakfast something different as Im sick of boiling chicken & pumkin but when I ask Patch which one do you want, I show him the the i/d food & the chicken breast & pumkin, he picks his chicken & pumkin, lol….

Oh, just read you change food, but if he still on Hills please add either a few sardines that were in spring water, or chicken or a boiled egg, etc so his stomach/bowel get use to different foods, sardines will make him nice & shinney..

    Hi linda h-
Congratulations on your new puppy! I’m sorry you are having some issues though. Have you had a fecal test done? My lab puppies ended up with Giardia and then Coccidia when they were puppies. That can cause intermittent loose stools and they were constantly hungry. Make sure that you have a test done that is sent out to a lab as these parasites are sometimes hard to detect. I am concerned that I/D is an adult maintenance food and would not supply the nutrients needed for a puppy.
Have you tried adding any plain canned pumpkin or any type of supplements to help with the diarrhea?
Check out http://www.dogaware.com. It has a lot of information and remedies for digestive disorders. It sounds as if you will have to feed him Hill’s brand food so I’m not really familar with all their foods and wouldn’t be able to recommend any. I sure hope you get this figured out. Good luck!

I have always wanted to raw feed but don’t have the time or resources to do it myself. However lately a frozen raw food brand has been available here in Spain, it is the only one, and I want to feed it to my dog and my cat (who currently eat Orijen kibble).

I need opinion on if this food is appropriate and complete for my pets: I would be adding taurin powder for my cat, as well as completing with raw bones from time to time.

Here is a link to the catalogue (see pages 3 and 4 for food pictures): http://www.dietayum.com/img/cms/catalogo-dieta-yum.pdf

Since it is in spanish, here is a translation of all their menus (I have asked, and the grinded meat includes bones and organs, and all the meat is human grade):

    Chicken & cow menu: 60% chicken, 19% cow, 9.9% carrot, 5% beet, 5% turnip, 1% olive oil, 0.001% garlic.

Beef menu: 79% beef, 9.9% carrot, 5% beet, 5% turnip, 1% egg shells, 1% salmon oil, 0.001% garlic.

Salmon menu: 20% salmon, 59% cow, 8.9% carrot, 5% beet, 5% turnip, 1% egg shells, 1% salmon oil, 0.001% garlic.

Turkey menu: 60% turkey, 20% lamb tripe, 9.5% pumpkin, 9.4% apple, 1% olive oil, 0.001% garlic.

    Lamb menu: 19% lamb, 60% chicken, 9.9% carrot, 5% beet, 5% turnip, 1% olive oil, 0.001% garlic.

Puppy menu: 40% chicken, 20% green tripe, 15% cow, 5% salmon, 5% beet, 5% carrot, 3.9% sardines, 3% turnip, 1% egg shells, 1% seaweed (spirulina), 1% olive oil, 0.001% garlic.

Thanks in advance for your opinion and help!

We have been feeding our pug boston terrier mix ( now 8 months ) Solid Gold Dry Lamb & Rice. Went to Petco last week and they didn’t have it and their other bags looked different. The store associate wasn’t helpful, as usual.

I just looked on their website and it is there- but in a different bag ( changed all their bags apparently ) and it was odd because there were no reviews on it. There were 4 1/2 stars but no reviews. Months ago when I read about it on their site the reviews were there! I wonder what’s going on? She needs food again and was doing well on it. The last bag I believe it was just lamb and rice. New bag says lamb, rice and barley. I MAY be wrong and it always had barley. My head is spinning.

Our other dogs- chihuahua and italian greyhound we have had on Simply Nourish Chicken and Rice for months and they are doing so well!! Much better than all the other ” HQ ” brands we tried.

Contemplating ordering another Solid Gold for the puppy or buying her the Simply Nourish puppy food.

    Thoughts?

I’m back on here again! Now asking if anyone has had much experience with Victor dog food. I’m currently feeding a puppy/adult formula; specifically the Hi-pro Plus. Not to repeat myself, but the Sheltie pup I got about 2 weeks ago was already on it, so because my mini Aussie pup is now a year old and ready to change over from Diamonds Naturals puppy formula, I decided to just put her on this same formula. For a couple weeks, the Aussie has aquired very itchy skin but other than that, went through the switchover just fine. The Sheltie pup remains doing well on it. I’m planning to change the Aussie over to something else as soon as I know for sure the food is causing her allergy/itching problems.

BUT, BUT, BUT………I have also noticed excessive stools, I think. It’s rather ridiculous in my opinion. It’s like, what the heck is staying in there? I clean my yard everyday, and since this morning again, I’ve cleaned up no less than 3 – 4 stools, EACH dog, already and it’s only 4:00 in the afternoon! This doesn’t seem right. Plus, the Aussie has lost about a pound of weight since she got on this food. I’ve started giving HER a little more because of the weight loss and then of course, the puppy is growing, so I’ve added a tiny bit more to his meals trying to get him down from 4 feedings a day to only 3. But it seems this stuff is almost going right through them. Sheltie pup is now almost 13 weeks and HAS continued to put on weight, but it’s minimal (which I would say is a good thing), but I’m concerned about all the stools and my Aussie’s weight loss, on top of the itching/allergy issues.

Can anyone give me some input and experience with this food?
Thanks for your help, as always!

    To all….

In need of some serious help and would like your assistance.

I have a 7month old doberman. He has always had loose stool and is on the lighter weight side, 42 pounds. He is a fun, happy, and loving dog.
At the time the breeder was feeding him Authority. In an effort to improve his nutrition choice and based on some of the information and reviews here I gradually switched him from Authority to Dr. Tim’s Kinesis.
In the last 4 months he really has not had solid stool; it remains mostly loose. I’ve fed him as per the packaging and sometimes less just to increase slowly in case it was too rich for him. Regardless of my efforts, he continuously has soft stool.

I’ve taken him to the vet to get checked out for worms and other things and they stated nothing was wrong with him. Additionally, my vet has little to no knowledge of any of the quality dog foods commonly discussed in this forum.

So, the ultimate question is should I continue to try to feed him Dr. Tims in some other method I am trying or should I stop and move to another food ( I was told you should not change puppy food until the dog is one year old? If so, is there any recommended one or just pick one from the list?

Any good word would be appreciated.

So I’m getting a puppy in a week (mini aussie – yay!) and I definitely want to feed a raw diet. I’m close to My Pet Carnivore so getting the meat / triple / grinds isn’t an issue. I also want to feed morning kibble – mostly because I want her to work for her food using food puzzle toys. She’ll be about 25 lbs as an adult so that will mean she’ll get about 12 ounces of food a day. (3% of 25 lbs)

Can someone recommend me a menu? Here’s what I have:
    Morning
    – Orijen Puppy Kibble (4 ounces)

    Lunch
    – Chicken neck (4 ounces) OR

Dinner (rotate amongst these options or so)
    – Green tripe (starting with grinded version and then moving on to the real thing) 2 ounces + whole grind chicken 2 ounces OR
    – Beef liver 1 ounce + whole grind chicken 2 ounces + chicken gizzard 1 ounce OR
    – Whole ground duck 2 ounces + Beef gullet 1 ounce + Green tripe 1 ounce + 1 ounce vege puree

Does this menu sound ok? More liver/offals? What kind? Also I’m adding Salmon Oil (Grizzly brand) and Solid Gold Sea Meal Powder.

    Thanks for any feedback!

I do have a picky dog but withholding food just starts her eating her feces again. She did it a little while as a puppy and stopped. I put cayenne pepper on it tonight.

I want to find a grain free budget canned, hopefully with a variety of flavors I think she gets bored. She will have a little bowl of kibble to nosh all day, I’d rather have her free feed than eat her poop. My other dogs had kibble available all day.

The food is put away at night because rats could come in the doggie door, although with her so far so good I think the terrier in her might go after them.

I’ve been giving her her cranberry and vitamin C with cream cheese now she’s getting suspicious. I took a syringe and forced her to take it tonight, maybe she’ll be open to the cream cheese again so we can control the crystals. Cheese and peanut butter don’t work.

    That is my new plan.

Hi, New to forum…Need help…We bought a 4month old Corgi that was being fed Kibbles and Bits..I was not fond of that Dog Food!!!! My pup began having loose BM…We had his stools checked 3 times, each time they were clear….
I should mention that he is a food “inhaler” we have tried two different bowls with “slow downs” in them…plus feeding in muffin pan…Hand feeding…Nothing works..I was fearful of bloating from the things I read……Vet again: She recommended Fromms Gold puppy food…Smaller portions per meal…That was fine for a day or two…He then began to throw up clear liquid after meals….Back to vet…She changed him again To Adult Fromms WhiteFish& Potatoe formula….Plus 1/2 table of pepcid…That seemed to help…Though I am after talking to vet taking him off Pepcid to see if the clear vomiting is gone, or re occurs….
These past couple of days he has been very sleepy, spending much time in his crate with door open…Not sure he is getting the proper nutrients from the adult Fromms…He will be 7 months olds on Dec. 3 and weighs 20.6 pounds…Not sure if this is proper weight as he doesn’t seemed to have gained a lot since we bought him ……I’m so confused by the lists of dog foods…I like the idea of Fromms as its right here in Wisconsin where I live…ingrediants seem stable….BUT should my pup be eating adult food..Are there nutrients he is missing by not eating puppy food..If so which one..I’m ready to cry…I see him in his crate and no that some thing is wrong….many trips to vet which we are very pleased with provides no answers….Any suggestions would be appreciated…At a loss to get him to stop inhaling his food…Never had to do that as a pup I was told…So I’m at a loss….Help!!

I routinely use puppy foods for my 11, 12, and 14 year old dogs. All that stuff in puppy food is great for them. It’s lower in carbs and higher in protein, which is what senior dogs need. Don’t worry too much about labeling, and go for any food that says its for puppies, all life stages, and adults.

For such a small dog, you may even look into a pre-mix for raw. I have an 8 lb jack russell mix on See Spot Live Longer and a variety of protein sources, and it only costs about $20 a month to feed him.

If you don’t want to go that route, I’m a big fan of Wellness. Their non-small breed formulas have kibbles that your little guy probably can’t chew, but they do have several Small and Toy Breed foods out, and they are releasing more. They come in grain-inclusive and grain free varieties, and they also always $5 off any size bag coupons on their website. Just click the “Check Your Bag” button, and follow the promts.

    http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/index.aspx

I also use Nutro Natural Choice LID Lamb and Rice (in the dark green bag), and their Small Breed line looks fantastic as well, but the prices and lack of coupons drive me away (those are in pink bags). Nutro Ultra looks like a great food.

Be careful when selecting foods while trying to stay away from Diamond. They make Blue Buffalo, Taste of the Wild, Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul, Precise, Premium Edge, and many more. And While I used to love Innova and Evo, I can personally no longer recommend them. They are now owned by Mars– the candy company. Since the buy-out of Natura (P&G, then Mars) the protein levels have dropped and more carbs have been added. Mars also owns others brands of pet foods. If they make your candy bars, should they *really* be making pet food?

Good luck with your little guy! I think I speak for all of us when I say “PICS!!!!” 😉

Sounds like a great plan! My one main recommendation is to keep him on the food the breeder is feeding him for at least a week (this is because dogs can be stressed when they first come home), and then slowly transition him to the new food. Also, make sure the specific formula you are feeding says “puppy” or “all life stages” on it.

I just rescued a 4 year old, 8 pound puppy mill survivor. I have never had a pup this small, my other dogs are all between 60 and 80 pounds.
I usually feed Go Free and Fit but the kibble is rather large for this little one.
Any suggestions would be welcomed. She is fairly healthy other than having had many litters and is yorkie and dashound mix. Very odd looking but a sweetie.

I am having some issues with my puppies and their dog foods. Bode is about 18 months large breed mix (85 pounds as of now) and so he’s not really a puppy anymore exactly. Zieke is a 9 month old Rottweiller.

I was feeding Dr. Tims Kinesis
**Zieke was constantly having diarrhea, he’s been checked by the vet and he’s 100% healthy. So we started to add some yogurt and a small amount of pumpkin. Didn’t help to much.
** Bode was pooping a TON each time he went, going around 5 times a day.

I switched to Daves Naturally Healthy Dog food
    now BOTH have constant diarrhea!

Idk what to do for food for them.

Here are my choices based off being able to afford them from Hounddog moms list

    4.5 Fromm Gold lg Puppy 1.52/lb 26/14
    4.5 Premium Edge 1.52 29/18
    4 Nutrisource lg breed puppy 1.53 26/16
4 Nature Variety Prairie on sale 1.64 26/12 lg puppy

Hi there! I am both new to the puppy/dog world and new to Dog Food Advisor. I am in the middle of researching the best puppy foods for my future pup (I pick him up December 7th!), and have (probably) settled on feeding him Fromm Gold or Horizon Complete kibble. I am not entirely sure, however, whether I should also be feeding him a wet topper. What are the benefits? Are there any disadvantages? Should I not feed wet food until he’s older?

It should be noted that the veterinarians who say there is NO LINK between protein levels and developmental issues are also the same vets who are still pushing annual vaccinations and early castration. I would always err on the side of caution. Therefore, as the owner of an Irish Wolfhound and Great Dane, I would NEVER feed puppy food and I would always use a low-protein diet, which (by the way) is suggested by the Irish Wolfhound Club of America. I feel they are the utmost authority on the subject versus random veterinarians – most of which have little experience with giant breed dogs like Wolfhounds. Furthermore, if you must spay/neuter your Wolfhound, I would highly recommend waiting until the dog is a minimum of 18 months (I wait two years). I know what I’ve said is a direct contradiction to what some others have said on the issue, but my info comes from the IWCA and the Irish Wolfhound Foundation who I trust more than veterinarians when it comes to certain topics, such as food, exercise, and castration.

My wife and I have a 13 month old boxer pitbull mix who weighs 65 lbs and about a 10 week old American Bandogge Mastiff. We have been feeding both dogs since we got the first one Blue Buffalo life protection. We haven’t had any problems with the food and the puppy especially seems to like it. I have been on these forums and i have scoured the internet for ratings on dog food, articles on nutrition for large breed puppies, and researched pricing. Throughout all of this i have realized that every dog is different and whay may work for one dog may not work for another. I saw the list that was posted i think on page 7 of the Canine nutrition forum that was a pdf showing 4 and 5 star dog foods with appropriate nutrition for large breed dogs. The woman who posted it said blue buffalo wasnt on there because she called but they did not release the details to her. My questions are: Does anyone know the brand Pinnacle and have any information or ratings to pass off to me? How do most people feel about blue buffalo wildnerness? I will try my best to stay away from any food produced by DIAMOND and mostly try to stay away from food that has been recalled. I have checked that list and saw blue buffalo back in 2011 i believe for too much viatmin D but if there are other brands that offer the same or better health benefits as wildnerness but i dont have to fork out $70 for a 30 lb bag that would be great. Thank you very much for you input

    Hello,

My Dane is 15 weeks old and is being fed this food:
    http://www.doctorsfinest.com/Healthy_Chicken_dog_food_p/dr%20es-gfb.htm

I know the feeding instructions say up to 1.5 cups per day since he’s <50 lbs, but I thought he might need to be eating more given his caloric needs. For what it’s worth, I’ve been feeding 2 cups of this food per day (previously, he was on Nutrisource Large Breed Puppy and was being fed about 4 cups a day before I swapped to this food on account of diarrhea).

I just barely made the switch to raw for two of my dogs, we feed them raw in the morning and kibble in the early evening. For my 4 month old puppy, he gets half of his food raw, so his full morning meal. We expect him to get 35lbs. For our senior, we starting off by feeding him 1/4 raw per day, so he gets the same portion as the puppy, with a cup of kibble added. He’s 100lbs! I just started this a week ago! I just went out and bought their meat for this week. I’m so new to making it completely balanced and that’s why I’m starting with half kibble, until I get this down. Here’s what they got last week each:
    Friday/Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday AM:
5.7 oz Boneless, skinless chicken breast
    1.3 oz beef kidney
    Saturday/Monday/Wednesday AM:
5.7 oz pork stew meat (boneless)
    1.3 oz beef kidney
    1 egg
They got turkey necks and cow feet throughout the week as well. This week I switched to a different menu:
    Saturday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday:
    1 pork rib
    1.3 oz pork liver
    2 oz beef heart
    2 oz turkey gizzards
    Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday:
    1.3 oz pork liver
    3 oz turkey gizzard
    2.7 oz beef heart
    1 tbs canned salmon
In the PM they get either Acana or Orijen, we switch between the two every night. I now give them an egg once a week, they get turkey and pork necks throughout the week. I’m gonna stop by a Whole Foods tomorrow to get whole raw sardine and feed them this twice a week in addition to the regular meal and omit the canned salmon. I know it’s really basic, but I just wanted to know what I can do to make it more varied and more balanced. I’d like to start now for when I switch them off kibble. My senior also gets probiotics in capsule form to help with his digestion, he gets gas easily. What can I add to his food instead of giving him 4 capsules a day? THANKS!

I recently aquired an unwanted 10 month old mini Aussie. She’s been on Diamond Naturals puppy food since about 10 weeks of age. No major issues with it, except I DONT like feeding anything made by Diamond. Anyway, I also have decided to get a new Sheltie Puppy in a couple weeks, who is on Victor’s Hi-Pro Plus formula (for active dogs and puppies). Since I was getting ready to switch the Aussie to something else anyway, I started to VERY SLOWLY start switching the Aussie over to this food as well.

My question is this…….since she’s been eating this food, still mixed with the old Diamond, she’s also been eating grass more than she did before, which was only occasionally. But now, she’s also eating the grass, then vomiting it up, along with a whitish, somewhat clear and frothy looking liquid. This is not an everyday occurrence, but I’m not quite sure what’s causing it. Maybe it’s the new food, maybe not. I know there’s other reasons dogs will do this, so I’d just like some insight or suggestions to consider. Her appetite is good, stools are fine and she acts normal. I’m just a bit leery of switching her over 100% now.

    Thanks!

HELP! I adopted my 6 year old Puggle from a family that had her since she was a puppy. They were kind enough to give us a big bag of her dog food – BENEFUL. There’s no way I’d feed a dog Beneful. I fed it to her for a week or two while trying to figure out the best food for her. I have another dog who has food allergies and I feed him Wellness Simple Canned Duck & Oatmeal formula. That keeps his skin from getting red and itchy and keeps his ear infections to a minimum.

I started her on a dry Wellness Simple. She didn’t like it – literally spit it out. So I tried Taste of the Wild. That made her sick – vomiting and diarrhea. Then I tried Natural Balance. We came home to poop in the living room. I let someone talk me into Sprout, the Fleet Farm brand. She was fine for a few weeks and now she has diarrhea again.

I always transition her slowly from one food to another, so I know that’s not the problem. She eats a lot of grass which may be an issue. I’m wondering if too much protein upsets her tummy. The weird thing is, she’s usually fine for a few days (even a few weeks) and then boom – poop everywhere. The only dog food she hasn’t had any issue with is freakin’ Beneful. Any suggestions?

    Hi Lihan Z,

I think you have a very smart dog there! Canned foods are a more natural diet for a dog than kibble. Canned foods are less processed than kibble, and don’t need a lot of inappropriate starches to hold them together.

Most kibbles contain meat meals (beef, turkey, chicken, etc) which in my opinion are one of the most inappropriate and low quality foods for a dog. If you are able to feed your puppy only high quality canned foods then that’s what I would do!

    Good luck with your pup!!!

    Hello,

I am currently just feeding my Dane puppy Nutrisource Large Breed Puppy kibble. However, I will soon be switching him to Great Life Rx Grain-Free: Buffalo. In saying that, I was thinking about adding a wet food to his kibble on occasion.

Does anyone know of any good ones for giant breed pups?

Or perhaps I’d be better off feeding ground chuck?

Alright everyone I need some help. Currently feeding my dogs Dr Tims
*Last year this time I got my awesome dog Bode and in April we got another puppy Zieke. They are both larger breed dogs. Bode is weighing close to 80 pounds at just over a year and Zieke is a full blooded Rotti. But we are having issues!!

    * Our Rotti always has loose stools. The first bit that comes out holds some form and the rest is to soft to hold anything. Negative for worms or anything in fecal matter
*Our older pup Bode poops TON at A time, 3-4 times a day!!
    * BOTH have awful gas!

Considering changing to one of the following foods to try all from the list of Grain INCLUDED (I can’t afford any of the grain free). In order of STARS:
    Pro/Fat Content
    5 Daves 30/20
    4.5 Fromm Gold 26/14
    4.5 Premium Edge 29/18
    4 Nutrisource 26/16
    4 Nature Variety 26/12

Does anyone have any experience with the above listed foods?
