Linda,
Our Cavapoo has been on Orijen Original for three years. We have b;lood work done every year and everything is fine! Our Vet says the same thing”there is no reason tio change food”
Lewis FParticipantThe results are in. To quote the Vet, the blood work came back pristine!! The Vet and I talked about changing food and he didn’t recommend it. He felt since Sophie has been on Orijen Puppy and now Original for 16 months and the blood work showed absolutely no signs of organ or digestive distress, he recommended she stay on it. We will do another check in six months.
April 30, 2018 at 2:45 pm in reply to: Pet Food Lawsuits and Other Internet Noise #114088 Report AbuseLewis FParticipantAs promised in my post above, I brought Sophie in for her 6 month check-up and Bordello vaccination. The Doctor drew blood and the results will be back tomorrow. We did not draw blood for the determination of metals, but the broad scan to see if any of the levels would indicate there was a problem “brewing”. I will share the result shortly after I receive them.
I did ask the Doctor if he had heard of the Class Action suit against Champion and of course he said yes. In fact, he said a quite a few patients that were either using Acana or Orijen and was familiar with the charges. His view has been the same to all of his patients, and that is if your pet is showing no signs of a problem with either Acana or Orijen over time (Sophie being 16 months), then monitor the suit, get blood work done at your pet’s physical and stay the course. If there is any indication of a problem with the blood work we will do further testing and then evaluate a course of action. He did agree with Mike Sagman, that there too many unknowns in what is driving the the accusations.
Lewis FParticipantPamela. Acana and Orijen did not have recalls, read this post on this website “Pet Food Lawsuits and Other Internet Noise”
April 13, 2018 at 5:57 pm in reply to: Pet Food Lawsuits and Other Internet Noise #113604 Report AbuseLewis FParticipantWill do, not scheduled for the test until 4/30
LewApril 12, 2018 at 1:24 pm in reply to: Pet Food Lawsuits and Other Internet Noise #113520 Report AbuseLewis FParticipantI’ve had our Cavapoo Sophie on Orijen Puppy and now Original for 19 months and she eats well without showing any adverse affects. In fact, Sophie goes in for her 6 month checkup at the end of April and I am going to ask the Vet to draw blood and check for high levels of minerals, etc. I’ll post the results if anyone is interested
Thank you Mike
Lew
Lewis FParticipantKaren:
I think each dog will react to certain foods differently. I have a Cavapoo that is 19 months old that has been on Orijen Puppy and Original for all of the 19 months without a problem. Orijen is owned by the same company as Acana; Champion Foods. I also believe the talk on the internet is regarding the alleged Class Action suit against Champion. There are many postings regarding the suit, one of which by Mike Sagman that you might want to read.Lew

I was curious about the table listed in the lawsuit naming the different Orijen and Acana Foods and the amount of contaminants found. The contaminants are listed in ug/kg and I converted them to parts per million or PPM which is what the MCL or maximum contaminant level is usually given in. I then found what the amount of the contaminant allowed in human food from the International/National Standards for heavy metals in food and compared it to the newly converted amounts in the dog food. Except for two that were barely over the Mercury level allowed, the amounts were found to be safe. For BPA I did not find a concrete set of data for MCL.
Lewis FParticipantMaria: Thank you for the post. I’m not changing from providing Orijen to my four legged family member. I will however, follow the information on the law suit

Dear Fellow Pet Lovers,The allegations contained within a Class Action Complaint that was brought against us on March 1st are meritless and based on misinterpretation of the data.
Let us assure you that our products are safe and that we systematically test our products at two third-party laboratories using the Official Methods of Analysis by Association of Analytical Communities (AOAC). Lewis FParticipantHow Much Is Too Much?
So, exactly how much is too much lead, arsenic, mercury or cadmium for pets? The FDA has no set limits.
āIn the absence of any federal regulation, for pet food, we had to rely on something that could really help consumers understand the levels that we were seeing,ā Bowen said.
So for those of us feeding our family pets dog food from Champion, we wait?
Lewis FParticipantI feed my Cavapoo Origin Original (live in Georgia) and she is thriving on it. The only information I have seen is the same article fort which you provided the URL. I guess we now wait for Champion’s response
January 4, 2018 at 3:25 pm in reply to: I need a recommendation for a dog food. #109346 Report AbuseLewis FParticipantAmy, Hello
My little Cavapoo (16 months) has been on Origen Puppy and now Original since we brought her home without any problem what so ever. I have read that other owners have had issues with Origen, but we have not. Origen dry ffod is rated very high and there are many varieties available, I would highly recommend a try.Lew
December 9, 2017 at 11:22 am in reply to: High Calorie/Protein Chicken-Free Dry Dog Food #108375 Report AbuseLewis FParticipantHeidi,
My dog (not a worker) has been on Orijen or Acana dry foods. Both are rated high and have many different types from which you can chooseLew
Lewis FParticipantI have been feeding Sophie the Orijen Original adult formula for over three months. I took two months to gradually switch from Orijen Puppy to adult original. She has about a cup a day and weights approximately 15 pounds. We have never experienced problems with any Orijen product. If you go that way I recommend to start the switch very gradually.

October 10, 2017 at 7:58 pm in reply to: Weight issue for Shih tzu Bella switching from Orijen to what?? Help please #105051 Report AbuseLewis FParticipanta c, The real difficulty is finding something our companion’s systems can handle. So far Orijen is working well with mine. When that stops its chicken soup and rice until everything settles
Lewis FParticipantSusan,
I have a one year old Cavapoo. We used nothing but Orijen Puppy from when she was three months until she was one. I forget the brand the breeder was using but we, over a period of a month, had her on nothing but Orijen small breed puppy. At one year we easily transferred over to Orijen original. She is doing great and loves the food. We also used Missing Link Puppy powder additive once a day.
Yes, our Sophie is pretty much spoiled
Smart idea on clean teeth. Our Vet recommended a cleaning enzyme which we use religiously on her teethLew
October 8, 2017 at 4:28 pm in reply to: Weight issue for Shih tzu Bella switching from Orijen to what?? Help please #105004 Report AbuseLewis FParticipantWe have a Cavapoo that is now on Origin Original which has an 18% Fat content; Orijen Senior has a 15% content. As for quality, Orijen is still rated very well. My little Poo has been on it since we brought her home.
If you want to stick with food made by Champion, you can also try Acana
- This reply was modified 6 years, 6 months ago by Lewis F.
Lewis FParticipantI use Orijen Original and puppy and have had no problems
Lewis FParticipantWe use Orijen Puppy. We have a 9 month old Cavapoo that started on Diamond natural Puppy and we transferred over to Orijen. Sophie has done great on Orijen and our vet says she can come off puppy food at one year, so we have started the slow transition to Orijen Original. All is going well!!!
Lewis FParticipantWell, that is partially what they told me. I guess I was fortunate to have started my pup on Orijen USA Puppy. Original and puppy are very close in recipe content. Sophie is six months old so I will be on puppy another three months then slowly transition her to Original. We have had companions in the past that developed similar issues and finding a new food can be a delicate and stressful situation. I wish you luck. I assume you wouldn’t want to try any of the ACANA products?
Lewis FParticipantMy Cavapoo is on Origin Puppy and seems to be doing well. She started on Diamond Natural and I very slowly brought her into Orijen puppy. When some of these issues appeared on this forum I called Champion and asked them what the differences in diet were. Their answer was the fish in the diet changed due to availability, everything else, they stated, was the same. It really is a shame Orijen is not working well for your Golden. I wish you luck!!
Lewis FParticipantI have a five month old Cavapoo who was started on Diamond Natural Dry Puppy food and we have changed her to Orijen puppy which she likes and it seems to agree with her system. I called Champion about two months ago and asked them what the difference between the Kentucky and Canadian plants. Their response was the type of local fish they put into the recipe, other than that they insisted the USA products were “cooked” the same.
February 15, 2017 at 7:55 pm in reply to: Question about Orijen produced in Kentucky #94569 Report AbuseLewis FParticipantI use Orijen Puppy and will go to Original. I am sure it’s made in Kentucky. The kibble size is the same.
Lewis FParticipantJeanne, I went to the FDA site and there was very recent information on dog food and no mention of less information being available. It would be interesting to know if this was fake news put out there because people’s feelings for Trump.
Lewis FParticipantDiamond Natural puppy formula worked for my pup
December 16, 2016 at 4:42 pm in reply to: Best choice for a small dog (yorkie) dry food #92664 Report AbuseLewis FParticipantThere are any number of brands you can choose and the ratings of those foods are rated on this site. We have a three month old Cavapoo and have been feeding it Orijen Puppy food. For older dogs, Origen Original is about the same. Champion foods are a bit expensive, but they are rated very well. You can find them on Chewey’s web site
Lewis FParticipantI chose one or two top providers and called them with the needs of my dog. The providers then lead me to a product that fit. Stick to the 5 star providers.
October 12, 2016 at 1:20 pm in reply to: Senior, Weight Management, Large Breed, Potatoe Free #90667 Report AbuseLewis FParticipantMy suggestion would be to pick out a couple of good/excellent 5 star brands and go to their websites. Call them and talk to their service people, they can provide excellent suggestions based on your pet’s needs.
Lewis FParticipantThank you for the quick reply zcReily! I will watch carefully
