I got Lily a new rain coat today. I’m going to try to post a picture:
Edit: Didn’t work, going to try to find an existing topic about it.
Edit2: I give up. Can someone please tell me how to post a photo? I have photobucket, but how do I imbed it?

Dog_ObsessedMemberIt looks like they have two formulas, but both are customizable. They have certain ingredients, and they include them in some way.
Dog_ObsessedMemberWas the bag they sent you “customized” for your dogs? Or just a default formula?
Dog_ObsessedMemberCool! Thanks! I thought they looked good but I was reluctant to buy a $20 without trying them.
Dog_ObsessedMemberHere is the one without the avatar: /forums/users/sbrown/
And the one without: /forums/users/pugmomsandy/Dog_ObsessedMemberHas anyone tried the Natural Balance L.I.T Chews? They seem better than many, they are grain-free and have meat and veggies pretty high in the ingredients.
Dog_ObsessedMemberFor information about large and giant breed puppy food, go here: /forums/topic/large-and-giant-breed-puppy-nutrition/
You should definitely switch him off of the Puppy Chow, but make sure his is comfortable and has been in your house at least a week, because stress can make food transitions harder. Good luck, and congrats on your new puppy!
Dog_ObsessedMemberNice job Akari!
November 28, 2014 at 12:41 pm in reply to: Something entirely unrelated to dog food. #58779 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberLily likes to chase squirrels rom far away, but recently she revealed her weakness; she is secretly afraid of squirrels up close.
November 28, 2014 at 11:50 am in reply to: Something entirely unrelated to dog food. #58771 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberI was hoping it’d be Angel, I’ve known a few little “wolf” dogs. 😀
November 28, 2014 at 11:10 am in reply to: Something entirely unrelated to dog food. #58767 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberI always like to spice up injury stories to make them seem more exiting. Which dog qualifies as the “wolf?”
November 27, 2014 at 11:00 pm in reply to: Something entirely unrelated to dog food. #58758 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberI’m glad your still thankful for your goats, you have the right not to be after what happened this week. 😛
Dog_ObsessedMemberWell said BCnut, that makes total sense but I hadn’t really thought about it. Do you think a raw diet could actually help control seizures?
Dog_ObsessedMemberWhen my foster dog was diagnosed with Epilepsy, we were told by one of the pet store employees to avoid rosemary extract and feed raw food. The thing about rosemary does not have much evidence to support it, (learn more here: /frequently-asked-questions/dog-food-ingredients/) and I don’t know about the raw diet. However, one probable cause seemed to be peanut butter. The seizures seemed somewhat timed with the peanut butter, and we stopped to peanut butter the same time we started the meds. Phenobarbital is supposed to take several weeks, but after we stopped the PB and started the meds, he had no seizures for a few weeks and only had one more thing we thought may have been a seizure a few weeks later.
Now, I have never heard of PB causing seizures, I have given it to other dogs with no problems. I don’t recommend avoiding peanut butter unless he actually seems to have a problem with it, but it is just a reminder that anything can cause seizures.
Dog_ObsessedMemberYou should take your dog to the vet ASAP to get checked out. If a dog has more than one seizure in a 24 hour period, it is known a seizure cluster and warrants an immediate vet trip. It is very unlikely this is actually life-thretentaning if the seizures are so short and he is fine afterward, but it is good to get him checked out. It is totally possible that the flea preventive could have caused it, though it is hard to know for sure. I would recommend switching him back to frontline, or talking to your vet about alternative preventions. Do not use any alternative preventions, such as garlic, without checking with your vet first. Garlic has the potential to cause problems if given in large amounts.
The vet will probably do blood work to check the Kidney(or liver, I forget) functions, and if those come back normal they may prescribe a medication like Phenobarbital. These meds often take several weeks to have full effect.
I once had a foster dog with Epilepsy, but he had Focal seizures instead of grand mal ones.
Dog_ObsessedMemberSomeone one Dogster Magazine thought that slow-bowls, such as this one made by Kyjen:http://www.chewy.com/dog/dog-games-drop-slo-bowl-interactive/dp/56306 would work for raw or “soupy” food.
Dog_ObsessedMemberI have a similar issue, I am currently feeding a mix of kibble, which I put in her toy, and either THK or canned mixed with water. It is pretty much impossible to put either of those in her activity toys, because they are so soupy. I am fine just feeding them in a bowl when I am also feeding kibble which she works for, but I might at some point want to feed all canned or THK. Any suggestions?
Dog_ObsessedMemberNo problem!
November 27, 2014 at 11:47 am in reply to: Something entirely unrelated to dog food. #58715 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberI live in California, a part where it doesn’t snow. I actually like snow quite a bit, this might be the only place in the nation where the term “go to the snow” is wildly used. What Cali really needs right now is rain though, as anyone who has listened to any climate news in the past year probably knows.
Dog_ObsessedMemberMerrick makes a canned food called Whole Earth Farms that is rated 5 stars and fairly budget friendly: http://www.chewy.com/s/grain-free,canned-food?query=whole+earth+farms&dept=all
Dog_ObsessedMemberOoh, nice one!
Dog_ObsessedMemberInteresting, it works fine for me, but it is $5 coupon not a $7 one. It seems to be the same coupon from several weeks ago.
November 26, 2014 at 9:12 pm in reply to: Something entirely unrelated to dog food. #58657 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberI have so much to be thankful for, whenever my problems seem overwhelming I remind my self that at least I have food on my plate each day, and Lily has good food in her bowl, and that I have a computer, and that I’m not dying from Ebola…Oh great, now I sound like an annoyed mother trying to get a two-year-old to eat his oatmeal. 😛

Dog_ObsessedMemberSounds great! There is probably nothing wrong with him, and what your doing sounds good.
November 25, 2014 at 11:02 pm in reply to: Something entirely unrelated to dog food. #58581 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberOkay, thanks. Lily does not have issues with fat level as far as I know.
November 25, 2014 at 10:54 pm in reply to: Something entirely unrelated to dog food. #58578 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberThanks BCnut! Can you recommend an unbalanced canned food (that is an extremely strange sentence.) that is mostly meat and would be suitable for mixing with a pre mix? Would Wellness 95% work, or is that too high fat?
November 25, 2014 at 10:43 pm in reply to: Something entirely unrelated to dog food. #58575 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberThanks! Emailing THK is a good idea, I’ll try that. I guess I could also consider mixing a freeze-dried prey model raw with it, though I have a feeling that would get pricey.
Dog_ObsessedMemberI would recommend getting it checked out by your vet. It could just be that he is burning more calories than he is getting, and if he seems otherwise healthy than there is probably not an issue, but weight lose can be the first sign of illness, so I would just make sure it is nothing. Also, is he consistently losing weight or did he just lose a few pounds an then stop? If it is the second one then it is probably not an issue.
November 25, 2014 at 10:30 pm in reply to: Something entirely unrelated to dog food. #58571 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberDoes freezing kill bacteria? I know it prevents it from growing, but I didn’t think it killed it. Thanks for the suggestion on By Nature, I just looked at that on Chewy.com and it seems quite good and reasonably priced. It is listed as a complete food in the review section though, so is it really eligible to be mixed with a pre mix? If not I might use it as a normal canned food.
November 25, 2014 at 10:00 pm in reply to: Something entirely unrelated to dog food. #58565 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberThanks! It’s actually more convince then price that I’m worried about–I don’t really have enough time to cook meat every day. I did some rough calculations and I don’t think the pricing would be too bad, especially if I learned some Akari saving skill. 🙂
The main thing I would be worried about is whether this is a complete and balanced meal–I also might want to use a 95% product other than Wellness, because it is pretty high fat to make up half of a dog’s meal.
November 25, 2014 at 8:20 pm in reply to: Something entirely unrelated to dog food. #58560 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberThis actually is related to dog food, but I put it on the THK topic a few days ago with no response so, I’m reposting it here. I know people are probably busy for Thanksgiving, and I heard about BCnut’s goat injury so it’s fine if no one answers this right away.
I just got this CRAZY idea: would it be okay to use a THK base mix and mix in Wellness 95% canned instead of meat? I would definitely check with my vet first, but what do you all think of this idea?
November 25, 2014 at 8:14 pm in reply to: Purina Pro Plan releasing a new senior line #58559 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberI take joy in looking around the Purina website, and looking at reviews of really, really bad dog food on DFA. This food is probably just another of their marketing gimmicks, I would try another middle step food if you were going to do that, maybe Wellness simple? It’s a bit lower protein and higher carb than the CORE recipes, plus the limited ingredients could be good.
Dog_ObsessedMemberCongrats! I’m sure you’ll be the star of your class wherever you go!
Dog_ObsessedMemberThanks for the suggestions! I just got this CRAZY idea: would it be okay to use a THK base mix and mix in Wellness 95% canned instead of meat? I would definitely check with my vet first, but what do you all think of this idea?
November 23, 2014 at 11:23 pm in reply to: Stained faces with my Champion Bichons #58298 Report AbuseDog_ObsessedMemberIf it is not the eye area of the face, then what part of the face is stained? I have a Bichon too, and she does have eye staining. I have tried to convince her to let me wipe them, but she was like “not happening” so I just ask the groomer to do it. She is just a family pet (She’s a rescue and I don’t know her heritage) so I don’t really care about how her eyes look, but I don’t want them to blister. I will look into Angel Eyes.
Dog_ObsessedMemberI gave Lily part of a sample of THK Embark mixed with water and her kibble yesterday, and she ate it but was not a huge fan. However, I usually feed her on a flat plate, and I was feeding her in bowl, and this was also the first time mixing water with her food. I have now gone back to feeding her kibble and canned, but separately, the canned in her bowl mixed with water to get her used to it. I want to try the THK again sometime soon.
Also, while the food didn’t look particularly appetizing, it smelled great for dog food. I read the earlier comments on this thread and was disappointing and surprised by the reaction to simple advice the topic poster had.

Dog_ObsessedMemberWellness CORE actually does have one puppy formula, rated 5 stars. Here it is on chewy.com: http://www.chewy.com/dog/wellness-core-grain-free-puppy/dp/37158
Dog_ObsessedMemberUgh. Old habits die hard I guess. Just keep trying to talk to her about it, and explain that treats and table food make Ginger sick.
Dog_ObsessedMemberMake sure the pumpkin is really pumpkin and not the pumpkin pie filling, but I would go for that. The treats thing sounds soooo annoying,
Dog_ObsessedMemberIf you are going to do home cooked for more than a few days then make sure it is a balanced meal, or use a premix.
Dog_ObsessedMemberThis sounds like a good plan, I don’t know the exact amounts to feed but I am bumping this up.
Dog_ObsessedMemberThis has probably been posted on this thread before, but I just found out that petfoodtalk.com has a ton of coupons: http://petfoodtalk.com/dogfoodcoupons/
Dog_ObsessedMemberSounds like a great plan! My one main recommendation is to keep him on the food the breeder is feeding him for at least a week (this is because dogs can be stressed when they first come home), and then slowly transition him to the new food. Also, make sure the specific formula you are feeding says “puppy” or “all life stages” on it.
Dog_ObsessedMemberPumpkin has greatly helped Lily with constipation, and from what I know it also helps with diarrhea because of the balance of fiber. Also, I think supplements like THK Perfect Form could help.
Dog_ObsessedMemberPurina Moist n Meaty is not a good food, so I would definitely recommend changing her food. The Honest Kitchen makes a dehydrated food that is marketed to be highly digestible when mixed with water, I have not used it but have heard from other people that they have gotten good results. Make sure you slowly transition her to any new food, so that it does not upset her stomach.
Dog_ObsessedMemberThis dog food looks pretty good, there are better ones but it is not bad. Here is the link to the DFA review of it, it is rated 4 stars: /dog-food-reviews/pet-chef-express/
Dog_ObsessedMemberNo problem!
Dog_ObsessedMemberYou can use Gravatar.com to create a profile pic. It’s pretty easy and straightforward. It might take a few minutes for your photo to show up though.
Dog_ObsessedMemberPill pockets don’t have great ingredients, not the worst in the world, but something I’d rather not feed on a daily basis. I would also recommend canned food, that seems to be what works best for Lily. I’m interested that your dog is allergic to peanut butter, because I had a foster dog that I thought was allergic to peanut butter, he had seizures that seemed to be timed with having peanut butter. How is your dog allergic to it?
Dog_ObsessedMemberAre these treats raw? I know the Simply ones are, but what about the biscuits?
