I am thinking of adding THK to my rotation, I ordered some samples yesterday. I have thought about Sojos, I am a bit germ-o-phobic so I’m a little wary about raw. Do you know what food safety measures Sojos takes to prevent contamination? I couldn’t find much about this on their website.

Thanks! I was jokingly thinking about trying one of their base mixes, I am a vegetarian but if I was going to eat meat this might be what I would eat because it is humanly raised.

Is THK actually raw? If so, how can it be human grade?

Thanks! I placed my first order there earlier today, I got some $1 samples and some treats. I actually figured out that 675 points will earn a months worth of food for Lily. Also, their food seems to much cheaper on their website.

Try feeding him some boiled chicken with rice, pumpkin, or sweet potato as a carb for a few days, and then slowly re-introduce his normal food. Adding a supplement like The Honest Kitchen’s Perfect Form could also help. If he keeps having diarrhea, has bloody stools, stops eating, or is lethargic then take him to the vet. I hope he feels better soon!

Has anyone tried using THK’s website to order food? I’m trying to get some samples.

How long does it take for them to eat one? I got a small salmon skin bone, not by THK, at the pet store yesterday. Lily loves it though it is somewhat smelly, and I think it will last her a while.

Oh yeah. I was looking at their fish treats yesterday. I thought the beams were chews at first, but it seems like they are sort of more like treats. I really liked the look of the quickies, because they are so low-calorie, so when I finally get around to placing an order on chewy.com those will be on it.

Just to clarify, Lily does not actually have urine crystals as far as I know, (she had a standard urine test in August.) but DogFoodie said her breed is prone to them.

Okay, thanks. I am also guilty of breaking up training treats in tiny pieces, I usually give Lily like 1/8 of a treat.

Thanks! There are some freeze-dried treats I give her, they are called Trail Buddy treats and they are made by a company called Cycle Dog. For some reason, the only place they are available around her is REI. There are some other freeze dried treats at the pet store that I might try. In terms of freeze dried food, is dehydrated/freeze-dried the same as raw?

Whoa. That sounds pretty bad. So is the potential issue with even american-made jerky that some ingredients could have spent some time in China?

I am always looking for healthy treats that are either complete and balanced or pure meat or veggies, and so that I don’t have to worry as much about feeding too many. I am not opposed to raw feeding in general, but I don’t really want raw treats because it is harder to use good sanitation practices when giving treats throughout the day. Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks for the input Dori! I’m interested to know actually, what is the exact problem with commercial jerky? I know the treats from China had bacteria and chemicals that caused Fanconi Syndrome, but is there something about jerky treats that make them harder to process safely?

From what I’ve seen it is really important for a dog to have water, and if a dog doesn’t drink much that is a reason to add water to their food. Lily drinks quite a bit, so I’m not as worried about that. As for bloat, from what I’ve heard and dog CAN bloat, it is just that it is extremely uncommon for smaller dogs. I think it would be unlikely for a 27 pound dog to bloat, though not impossible. I’ve heard that mixing with wet food can help prevent bloat.

EDIT: Just saw BCnut’s reply, thanks! I freaked out about bloat for one of my fosters, she was “dry vomiting” because of kennel cough, and that is one of the main symptoms of bloat. She was 12 pounds though, so bloat seemed unlikely. Once she was diagnosed with kennel cough I relaxed. Oh yeah, and there was that whole “ice water causes bloat!” thing on the internet. Luckily by the time I saw it it had been disproven.

We don’t have petland here either, which might be a good thing from what I understand. I have seen a lot of things saying they sell puppies from puppy mills. It’s weird, because I went to their website and they had a bunch of stuff about spay and neuter and community service and stuff, but I would sneer clear of any place that sells puppies unless they are from shelters.

That’s awesome! I thought it was a bit strange that you were getting 3 new dogs in one weekend, but then I remembered that you said something about fostering one time. I have also fostered, before I got Lily. I’m hoping to do it again sometime soon, but we’ll have to see how it goes with Lily’s training(she starts basic classes in a few weeks.)

I rotate every month or so, but I don’t really have much of a choice because Lily takes about a month go through a 5lb bag, longer if mixed with canned. She is 9.5 pounds. From what I’ve heard you can do whatever is most convenient, whether that is every meal or every month.

I know this topic is ancient, but I just want to chime in about vaccines. When I first adopted Lily her vaccine history hard to find, because she has had two different owners and was first vaccinated at a Petco. We opted for rabies, the parvo/distemper/hepatitis/whatever else they throw in, and bortedella. Lily’s grooming facility requires the bortedella vaccine, so we didn’t really have a choice for that. I’m not sure if it is required ever 6 months or every year, I will opt for the least often. Both rabies and parvo/distemper are listed to be every 3 years by the vet. We will definitely go ahead with the rabies vaccine, but we might get a titer for parvo/distemper. We did not get vaccines for lepto, lyme disease, or rattlesnake bite do to low risk factors in our area.

To the best of my knowledge, it’s a law in most places that dogs can’t drive at all. Riding in the car could be a different story. 😀

    Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.

Glad they are doing a bit better! You are right, the missing teeth need medical care ASAP. I’m really surprised the vet is not concerned about it. I would recommend going to a different vet for this, maybe one that specializes in dental care, and get there opinion. Thanks for taking care of and caring about these dogs.

I have no idea…not even sure if it is allergies making Lily itchy, or if it is food allergies. A pet store employee told me to avoid chicken, beef, and grains. I am basically just trying to find one food she is not allergic to, and go from there with eliminations. When we first got her she was on IAMS, which had both beef and corn, and her allergy symptoms were no worse than they are now.

I couldn’t understand it either, but the same thing happened to me last week while doing research on Magnesium, so I though there was just a bunch of technical stuff in it. I reread it and it still makes no sense though, except for the last paragraph.

I opened a Chrome incognito window and searched the site on google, I can tell from the google description it is the site of a Parson Russell Terrier breeder. For all I know it could have information about how to feed a home cooked diet, but it seems to basically be commercial spam.

Yes, the pic is supposed to be upside down, she was on her belly when I took the photo. Gravatar made me crop it, it is more clear in the original.

I am also waiting for an update, I hope she is doing okay.

Oh yeah, the report is gone. I think it used to be a “like” button, and to many people reported when trying to like a post.

Edit: Just saw the update, I’m really glad you had the courage to do this. I hope time will help with your parents reaction, sending lots of good vibes!

Thanks! The time the vet said she thought Lily was having allergies it actually turned out to be fleas. (Apparently the frontline plus wasn’t working.) We have since changed to Activyl which took care of the problem, though she had a few more fleas 4 weeks later right before the next dose. She has still been sort of itchy though, which promoted us to think it might be allergies. The vet initially prescribed an anti-hisimine, which we chose not to use because she had recently been on antibiotics for an anal gland issue (one reason the vet suspected allergies.) and wanted to see how she would do without any medication for a few days. Then, we figured out the problem was fleas, and so we decided not to use the antihistamine at all. We also changed her food, from TOTW Wetlands to Lotus Grain-free Duck. She still seems somewhat itchy, mostly on her face.

On a side note, I just realized how much I use parentheses. Somehow I never noticed that before.

Yeah, I only give these to Lily for about 20 mins per day, and the small ones last about 10 days, so I don’t think she could possibly be getting enough salt to be an issue.
