My Original text about hair in dog food – I’ve been using this expensive 5 star dog food brand ACANA Heritage Meats formula for a while now, trusting their quality advertised as using fresh meat and regional heritage meats, making it seem human grade. Now I am shocked to find out that there is crazy amounts of hair in the kibble. I began using a white plastic food scoop not too long ago and noticed short thick black hairs stuck on the scoop. Then I realized that those hairs were coming from the actual kibbles and there are a lot of them. It’s unacceptable for a premium brand like Acana to grind in carcasses with the hide of the animal, hair still attached. They should mention various animal hairs as one of their ingredients! Please see the photos and next time you feed your dog, please look at the individual kibble carefully. Acana also have not responded to my inquiries in helpful manner. I am worried that my dog might have been ingesting too much hair and who knows, maybe all this hair is from rats. I am really appalled and shocked about my findings. Please share this info. I am very disappointed that even premium brands that advertise no animal byproducts have such suspicious practices.

I too have fed Canadian made Orijen and Acana for yeats and my dogs did well on these foods. Since the change to the Kentucky formulas I have had nothing but problems. I contacted Champion with all my concerns and urged them to correct the problem before someone’ s beloved pet died, before it was too late. Apparently it is too late. So sorry for your loss of Katie. I know how you feel, you know it was the food even though you can’t prove it. My dog almost died after switching to the new formula. He began to have episodes of collapse shortly after he began to eat his Orijen. This progressed to collapse and seizure. He almost died the last time. I feel like an idiot that it took me so long to figure out it was the food. I had used it for many years and trusted Champion. They don’t care that I almost lost my dog. In the bag that almost killed him I found some large clumps of something so hard you could not break them with a hammer. I sent photos to Champion. They thanked me for the photos. My dogs are all off Acana and Orijen and all health issues are resolving. They were all eating dirt and drinking large amounts of water and then having accidents in the house. My close friend who also fed Acana for years with no problem started to have similar problems after switching to the new formulas. Her dog also collapsed. I can’t prove any of this was related to the food, but I know in my heart it was. I hope Champion corrects the problem before someone else has to suffer such a horrific loss. In the meantime spread the word.

I put a question mark because we are not entirely sure quite yet what the exact issue is and are starting to rule things out to determine the cause.

Recently about I would say 9 days ago, My parents noticed there bulldog was having red spots on his sides and losing hair at those exact spots. We haven’t changed food and he’s been on the food for a solid year now with zero problems, not ruling that out as a possibility, but it seems unlikely.

There are no sores, no lumps or anything that we can see. At first we figured it was just what they call “Hot Spots” but most times they as obvious would feel warm to the touch which these do not.

My parents did call the vets and they only stated that it could be allergies to something around him or that he is eating. They changed his food to home cooked foods. The vets also suggested a special shampoo to try and given a bath twice a week. I suggested them not to bath as such, I believe differently in that case.

They are going to try taking him to a different vet for another opinion, but in mean time I figured I would take a chance on maybe someone else have had the same issue with there beloved k9.

I hope this okay to do, as I did not see any rules against it, but here is a photo of the “Red Spot” so you can maybe get a feeling for the issue.
(nvm about the photo as apparently you can not add photos here)

    Hello
I sort of had the same issue with my shepherds
But I found a solution that works well for them
It’s a dry dog good made by Victor

You can find it on chewy.com

There small bites so don’t get fooled by the photo of the German Shepherd
For my dogs the other dog foods had way to much fiber
Also my dogs are real active

    Bets of luck to you

My adult toy chihuahua weighs approx. 1,2 kg (2,6 lb), I’m trying to find small kibble. Acana Adult Small Breed don’t seem small from the photos.
If anyone can recommend a adult 5 star small breed kibble i would be very appreciative.

    pitluv,

Thank you for your quick reply.
Your response on Bully Max and that it was so new was the exact reason why I was asking for everyone’s thoughts on it.

Another reason I was leaning towards Orijen is it has both the min and max calcium/phosphorus values on their package, at least from the photo on chewy.com. It shows calcium max/min 1.5/1.2 and phosphorus max/min being 1.3/1, so it never exceeded the 1.5:1 ratio even if phosphorus was at min and calcium at max.

I must have missed the part of 3g/1000, and according to the calculator and the info from the picture it looks like it can range from 3.2-3.9/1000.

So should I dismiss Orijen and begin a hunt for another.

    Hi Amateria,
I have a photo of the hair in the Sunday Pets Deliganics (for Senior) dog food.
How do I post it in this forum though?

I’ve asked the pet shop (in Singapore) who sold me the food and it seems like there’s been multiple complaints before of the same issue.
The pet shop was nice enough to allow me to exchange for another product.
The response from Sunday Pets to the pet shop was that those are part of the herbs ingredients. Those little short strands of black & white “hair” certainly do not resemble any herbs I know of, in my view. It brings me to wonder what animal and what was the process of producing the food. With a very imaginative mind, I see the image of whole animal parts (with fur / hair etc.) being thrown into a grinding machine! 🙁

    Hi Linda P,
Thank you for asking about Duffy. He ended up making amazing progress. He topped 7 pounds and grew the most glorious coat of dark black curly hair. It was unbelievable! You can see from his photo that he had gone gray. The new hair was jet black. He was doing better than I could have ever hoped, but then he had a crash of hypoglycemia. He stayed in the specialist’s 24 hour hospital for 5 days. They did a glucose curve the entire time and he was all over the chart. He soared up to 600 and then 1 unit of insulin sent him to 30 and he stayed around 50 for many hours. They watched him very closely and he seemed fine so they let everything work itself out. He came home with instructions to get .5 unit once a day. He crashed again a couple months later. Where do you go from there? I had to try to feed him several times a day, which he did not like. He had his first seizure in December 2015. We tried all the drugs and did everything we could but the seizures started to come in waves, one after another, so we had to say goodbye this past February. It absolutely broke our hearts. I fought so hard and never gave up on him, but as soon as I realized the seizures couldn’t be controlled, I ended it very quickly. I didn’t hesitate. No suffering for Duffy. 💜💜💜💜

Good luck with Kismet. Solid Gold canned food Hund-N-Flocken became a favorite and it is the highest calorie that I have found at 580 per can. Duffy loved it. I sliced it and baked it into crunchy treats so he ate it all day.

Wow, I love this. It is so good to be able to learn and share information about nutrition for the big guys. As for me and my food, yes I consulted with vets, nutritionists and other giant breed breeders who have fed RAW before switching my adults. Then I did more research and consulting before starting puppies on such a diet. I am a breeder of Saints and also work with rescue for any large/giant breeds that come into shelters in my area. I have fostered Mastiffs, Great Danes, Pitbull’s, Rottweilers and more over the years. Most shelters aren’t equipped to house giant breeds or aren’t allowed to even take in Pitbulls, so I am on their list to call when these breeds come in. I would gladly post photos but am new to this and not sure how?

To Donna M. and To Helene K. : I am very sad for your losses. I know how much we love our loyal dogs and if the Canine Carry Outs are causing these mishaps, it should definitely be removed from the shelves.

My little dog is 14 years old and has always loved these treats, as I stated back in 2015. I have been giving him these treats (beef) since he was about 2 years old. Now, to me, these are TREATS only and are not to be fed as regular food. I have read the bags ‘Made in USA’ and don’t find where it indicates products from China. Prior to the complaints on the forums and the several deaths, I used to give him no more than 1/2 of a nugget in a.m. and 1/2 nugget in p.m. / Since reading all the forums, I became very skeptical and only give him like 1/4 of an inch crumbled up. I even stopped for a while and bought these other $6 treats at PetSupermarket, but when he eats more than 2, he throws up.

Now, so that all of us who have given our pooches these treats, and have been fortunate that they are still alive: can you indicate on the forum how many of these treats were you giving your dogs and for how long had you purchased them. Can someone post the link or a photo of bag where it indicates ingredients are from China? How about the FDA
    indication of removal?

Thank you and again, I am really sad for your losses.

Thanks for your answer and for dealing with my mubbly jumbly postings 🙂
Leica’s ideal weight is about 40-42lbs. She is about 48-50lbs now. She looks like a sausage dog and definitely has been having a harder time getting around. She is also Lyme positive so maybe this has played a roll. I have started by reducing her food by 1/2 cup.. so far so good. She is currently getting 1 1/2 cup of Acana Grasslands per day. I will definitely look into the Annamaet Lean some more though.

    This is her yesterday….

    This is her last summer…

Hi Everyone! I’ve been having some concerns about my dog Leica. She was a rescue and has severe separation anxiety so has been on a therapeutic dose of Fluoxetine (Prozac) for about 8 months (I didn’t want to do this but we tried everything else and the doctor thought it best). I want to ween her off soon because her training has been going well but she has gained weight which is one of the listed side effects. I want to help her lose the weight! She currently eats about 2 cups of Acana Grasslands everyday and I usually also give her some organic veggies and occasionally a very small amount of Kefir or greek yogurt for that probiotic boost. If I do include some fresh meet I cook it plainly and reduce the amount of kibble. I think I feed my dogs pretty well but what can I do to help Leica? She gets a good amount of exercise- daily walks and runs in the woods/field a few times a week. My other dog Forest is a one year old lab/boarder collie mix so he keeps her pretty active too. I would be truly grateful for any advice!

P.S. the meds seem to have made her more sedentary while we are at home. She naps. a lot.
I tried but couldnt get photos to work.. ?? can you link them from fb?

Out of all the kibbles I’ve used, Pro Pac Ultimates Grain Free Bayside Select is the largest size kibble. It’s round and slightly flattened. You can also contact the food company and ask them for the size of their kibbles. I’ve had some reply with a photo of the kibble next to a tape measure.

If hair in the food is ok because its really quiet a lot of it and I have no idea how to attach photos off of an ipad if its even doable off of these smaller devices.

The company never really said anything as I wasn’t able to get in touch with them via a 2nd email, I’m surprised they even wrote back to the first one, it did take them 2-3 months to respond however.

Seven months ago the vet discovered that my 11 year old cairn terrier had multiple nodules on her pancreas. They said that it was either a tumor, benign or malignant or hyperplasia of the pancreas, which is common in old dogs. A month ago she was acting lethargic, depressed and had a seizure like episode. They prescribed her doxycycline after she tested light positive for anaplasmosis and from here on she got much worse. She threw up yellow, foamy bile every night. She’s always had GI PROBLEMS but the doxy made her feel very sick, she refused to eat anything, and lost 2.5lbs in the process.

We brought her back in and they took her off the doxy, they gave her an anti-nausea injection and prescribed various medications to treat her stomach and pancreas. A few weeks later her blood test seemed to have improved, her ALKP at the time of the crisis was over 6000!! However, it went down to less than 2000 with all other liver enzymes in the reference range. Everything else was normal, including the blood count, except for slightly high calcium and BUN levels.

Any who, they compared her pancreas photos from seven months ago and the nodules have not changed at all. They said they are ruling out cancer, and it is most likely something that shouldn’t be worried about. However, they are saying her liver enzymes are still high and they want to do a liver biopsy to figure out what is the problem, in order to give us a better diagnosis and to implement a treatment plan. We refused and instead opted to give monthly urine samples, as well as administrating milk thistle into her diet.

MY QUESTION: What should her diet consist of? After the supposed pancreatitis episode we introduced her to chicken and rice, which she seemed to do okay on. We then introduced her to Fromm grain free, shredded chicken and Natural Instincts frozen raw venison. She absolutely loved it, and seemed to be doing great. We fed her a small amount of the medallions. I know raw diet, especially natural instinct has high fat content, so maybe it isn’t good? She is back to Fromm with some boiled chicken and rice and her symptoms of pancreatitis seem to be coming BACK!

Her stools are muscusy, yellow, greasy diarrhea, which are signs of pancreatitis and/or too much fat in her diet. She has also been dry heaving occasionally. These symptoms have developed after we stopped giving her Natural Instinct. Today we fed her just chicken but her stools are the same. Pungent, yellow diarrhea.

Should we give her ENZYMES and/or probiotics, it seems that she isn’t digesting her food properly and the vets aren’t really helping diet wise. Is it wise to give dogs with pancreatitis raw diets and if so which brand is the best for this condition. If not, what food is appropriate for her condition?

I would greatly appreciate the input!

Molzy, my Cavalier King Charles has the same symptoms. After multiple tries with different Chinese herbs, acupuncture, dietary changes, etc. we finally took her to a specialist who scoped her throat and bronchials. (While in there he took photos that he later showed us.) It turned out that her left bronchial is 95% collapsed and her right bronchial is 75% collapsed. (She’s never worn a collar when walked, just a soft harness. The doctor believes it is genetic.) At the same time he removed a small amount of excess palette tissue that was touching the back of her throat. The collapses are after the bronchial tubes split so she is not a candidate for surgery. My husband did some research and we have her on some good supplements designed to rebuild cartilage which has helped quite a bit. (She used gulp/panic/eat grass several times a day and night. Now she has an episode once every couple of days.) When it happens, I find that if I open her mouth (which she actually comes to me to do), stick my finger toward the back of her tongue and then gently pull her tongue forward, they’ll be a soft popping/suction-release sound and she’ll feel better. Occasionally this doesn’t work, so when that happens I just let her go outside and eat a bit of grass so she can throw up and clear her lungs. We’re planning to take her back to the vets soon to have her re-scoped so we can see if the supplements have arrested the collapse and possibly rebuilt them in some way. If you’re interested, I’ll let you know the results. Good luck–your pup is lucky to have you.

    Hi Dori,

As a matter of policy, I never publish any recall announcement unless it can be officially confirmed.

Since this particular event has not (yet) been posted by the FDA and cannot be verified by the company (over the weekend), I had to personally travel to a PetSmart retail store to capture a photograph of the announcement.

I then had to manually convert the photographic lot information to HTML text format, write and format the article, share it on Facebook and write and broadcast an email for our subscribers. So, sorry for the delay.

Here’s a link to our article:

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Coonhound Mama,

    http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af40/VolcanoGuy/P1010006_zpsjqflqyc2.jpg

Maggie is a Black and Tan Coonhound who is now about 7 years old. She’s had itching problems since we got her at the Amador County Animal Shelter 6 years ago and am not sure if it’s caused by food or airborne allergies. I tried a food without Lentils or Peas a while back and it seemed to help. Then, I switched her to a food that has chicken in it without lentils or peas and the itching started up again so I’m going to try once again a food without lentils, peas, or chicken and see how that goes. Good luck with your friend.

None of mine choke on the bones. The one that likes to swallow, just swallows it down all the way and he still poops out little nuggets like the other two pugs that take their time. He just gets the small neck bones sometimes. It’s gone is 2 seconds. I do like to make their food as well so I grind up necks to use for the bone content and add muscle meat and organs. For a recreational bone, they get beef ribs or marrow bones which they can’t eat and gnaw on it for days. Once in a while I’ve given them whole quail too and oddly enough, no feathers in the poop. They also eat whole sardines about 6-8 inches in length. Sometimes they’re not thawed all the way so it’s more like a sardine-sicle.

Hi Iosul, if Patch was your dog what would you do? When Patch had Endoscope & biopsies done last December 2014 the Diagnosis said “Moderate to chronic Lymphocytic Gastritis with associated spiral bacteria infection”.. her comment was “Helicobacter are controversial pathogens in dogs & cats being present in asymptomatic animals. Where there is significant pathology in combination with characteristic clinical signs they may be significant. It is more common to see larger numbers of them in the fundic region of the stomach. This could also be a manifestation of MORE EXTENSIVE inflammatory bowel disease..

The live Probiotics the Naturopath wanted him to take make him feel sick they’re gluten &
dairy free & are kept in the fridge I read that some probiotics can make you feel sick, the Naturopath said we need to fix his gut to get his stomach pH back to 1 again but Patch
kept regurgitating the raw diet water would come back up into his mouth & he would swallow & swallow it.. how I know it was water that was coming up is he went to look in my shopping bag to see what a lady had given me & he did his regurgitating all down the side of my bag, it just happens & he hadn’t drank any water only ate his kangaroo & 2 spoons of blended veggies about 3 hours after eating the raw for breakfast, then I thought maybe the enzymes broke the raw down too quick so I tried without the enzymes & Patch felt sick & was eating grass, like the Naturopath said would happen, I asked her what will the enzymes do she said stop any nausea & help stop any bowel rumbling & diarrhea….so I stopped the raw diet enzymes & probiotic & put him back on his kibble & started to cook but he regurgitated the cooked food as well & I never gave enzymes or probiotic, the thing is he doesn’t regurgitate soaked kibble or wet tin foods, then I thought could there be too much protein in the raw & cooked diet & he cant handle all that meat Kangaroo or beef.. where the wet tin food only has 7% (30%) protein.. the kibble he’s eating has about 22% protein.. I don’t know I cant work out how to fix him…. I will photo copy the link you posted… I need to find out how to make his gut healthy again.. I’ve tried low fat greek yogurt he started his licking & licking his mouth & wanted grass..
Lew Olson said give him L-Glutamine & cabbage juice to help with the nausea..

My vet said we may never fix this problem, at least he’s not in the condition he was in when you rescued him, I said, I suppose but I want him healthy & pain free 🙁

    Lucia,
I know nothing about large breed puppy food but I’d choose a food from HDM’s list and feed it. Add a probiotic. Do a very slow transition over a week. Keep him on this food for a couple months, at least. If you want to try another food, repeat.

    Ashlee,
somewhere in this thread is a link to the list of approved large breed puppy foods. HoundDpgMom compiled the list; she has bloodhounds too. You’d do well to feed a food from this list. I have a hound named Boone too! He’s the pbgv in my photo here!

So mom just got home from work and informed me that Ginger lost a tooth. Since mom doesn’t want to do the dental, I’ve been trying to encourage some of her teeth to fall out on their own by not putting as much water in her food, and not letting it soak as long, so that about a quarter of her her food is still pretty crunchy. Apparently it’s working. Do you all think I’m doing the right thing, trying to make the yucky teeth fall out?

And for your viewing pleasure, heres a pic of the tooth that fell out 😉

They do look really tall! I was worried they would be too tall for Haley, but I went ahead and got them anyways, and they are actually only 15 inches :p (if you click on the photo to expand it, they look normal)

I wanted the blue placemat! Thats what caught my eye was the color, but I didn’t see that they sent you a random color until after I had decided to get it lol Oh well, maybe the blood stains will just remind me to keep it clean *rolls eyes*

The first of my three Pet Mountain packages is here! The two elevated bowls, the water conditioner, and the cat’s new placemat. I was worried the bowls wouldn’t be sturdy enough, because Dweezle is a very enthusiastic eater, but I played with them a little bit, and they stand up pretty well! I imagine a couple times tipping it over will teach him to chill out and not act like a lunatic lol I also orginatlly wasn’t quite sold on the placemat, but the cat really likes to drag his food on my carpet (especially the red meats!), so it was something I really needed. I thought it was going to be hard, rigid plastic, but it’s actually rubbery, probably silicon. I do like it 🙂 (just wish they could have picked me out a nicer color…. lol)

Hey guys, anyone care to check out these pictures of Ginger laying down and tell what you thing of this bulge in her lower rib cage area? I mean, she’s always been like that, but it really seems to be larger.

She’s at a point now where all she does is sleep, pee on the floor, and eat. Although she is in a good mood when ever she is awake, especially when food is involved. But I’m pretty sure she sleeps like 22.5 hours out of the day at this point. She does demand attention from mom every night that she sits at the desk. She’ll stand at moms feet and bark, and if she gets up, she’ll lead mom to the kitchen and show her where the treats are XD Apparently moms work makes Ginger jealous, and hungry LOL And she leaps in the air gets really excited for her dinner. And if she gets hungry, she will stand in the middle of the house and bark at me, and show me where the kitchen is and where the food is, and then she shows me where the bowl goes (regardless of if I have it or not) 😛

(Wow, totally did not see this in my email LOL)

If you have Yahoo, it likes to file everything in to the spam folder. It’s irritating :p

So guys. I need some opinions. So I need a smaller cat, or a larger perch??

Yeah, if I can figure out how to do something new on the computer on my own, any one can do it. I’m on a few sites that you have to load to photobucket to post and I’m a Mod on one, so I figured I had to bite the bullet…

    Dori, they are adorable!!!

Cheryl, I just figured out photo bucket just before I posted. It’s called photobucket.com It’s a place where you can upload photos that are on your computer, elsewhere too, maybe? Not sure? Anyway, then you can copy and paste it on a forum. LOL I had to go on to youtube to get a couple of tutorials before I could figure out how to copy and paste to the forums. That’s about as much help as I can give you. TheBCnut use to say how un-techie she is so the other day when she posted the Rachels I figured I should at least give it a try once again cause I am fairly tech savvy but the posting of pictures has always eluded me. Now that I’ve done it I realize how easy it is, of course, that’s after looking at the tutorials over and over again.

Thanks for the compliment on “the girls”. Yep, they were having a tea party. They got freeze dried Vital Essential Tripe treats for their “cookies”. They were trying to give them some of their real cookies so I ran into the pantry for “their” cookies.

Hannah’s none too happy being dressed up. This was one of my granddaughters idea of playing dress up.

The Girls. Hannah, Lola and Katie. Katie with her bedhead look as usual. Lola is kind of blurry so I’ll post a different pic.

Thanks BC. Finally decided to take your lead and go onto photo bucket.

Yes. I finally had to break down and get a photobucket account for something else, and once you have it, you might as well use it.

    Hello Akari_32

Thanks for your response. There’s a lot of info about this issue, I’m still reading about it. Does the Afghan is considered large or giant breed in order to decide puppy food?
What’s your food brand recommended for Afghan puppy?

    Here’s a picture of Dario:
