I was thinking that too lol too bad their grain free might actually be worse than some of their regular foods. I’d rather feed One Beyond over the Pro Plan grain free.

Aw crap! You guys are right! I emailed them to cancel the order. After it goes through and I get my money back I’ll get the Program stuff. So back to that, which should I get? The 1-10 pound or the 11-20 pound? He’s 10.5 pounds…. Lol

Our dogs have fleas from the neighbors dogs. They used to have like 8 dogs in their yard, and about 6 or 8 people living in their 2 bed 1 bath house, as well as several cats! So all of our pest problems are from them. The cat does have a flea collar, and he’s considerably better than Bentley is (Bentley is not currently on anything for fleas– he hasn’t had his Trifexis in about 4 months. I’m not paying for that dogs get bills or food anymore!), but I’d like to be flea free, especially if I’m moving out in the summer like I’m planning on. We used to have ticks. I’m glad it’s “just” fleas now! (Even though there’s a lot of them….)

Never mind, I found Capstar for a really good price ๐Ÿ™‚

I did, and I really like the sounds of it! I think it actually does more than Trifexis. We have no problems with Trifexis, either. Bentley does get tired and lethargic after taking it, but bounces back and is just as annoying as ever in a few hours. Haley has no reactions to it at all. There are risks with any meds (and even natural remedies), human or animal. You’re not gunna know until you try, but don’t go try something you aren’t comfortable with.

I actually just found a 12 month box of Capstar for the cat on https://www.budgetpetcare.com/ for less than $40 after a coupon code. Whoo! I’ve never used this site before, but for $36 I guess I’ll give it a try lol (its also good for dogs, but only kills fleas).

I’m looking at oral flea preventions for the cat, and I’m wondering about this Program stuff. He currently weighs about 10.5 pounds, and he’s maintaining that very well. It goes from 1-10 pound doses to 11-20 pound doses. Cat apparently don’t weigh 10-11 pounds. Which one should I get?? Anyone have any other suggestions on cheap but effective oral flea preventatives?

    Akari_32
    Participant

Didn’t think so… We need a good flea prevention down here. It’s terrible! And none of the common topical flea meds work. I bought a cheap $10 4 pack of some Sentry flea stuff and it worked better than Frontline and Advantage did, which is pretty sad. Still didn’t work all that great, though. Trifexis is the best we’ve had for fleas, but $300+ a year is just too much.

I’m gunna look into that cedarcide stuff! Sounds interesting.

I use Trifexis and it works great, but it’s soooo expensive! I do know about all the problems it’s caused, but Haley has no issues with it. I’d love to see about cheaper (and safer) options, though. I’m just a poor college student after all lol I have thought about using just ivermectin. Not sure if that gets fleas as well as worms, though.

The $4 off $20 says that too, which is why I have to have $20 or more after the other coupons are applied to be able to use it. Too bad the store you shop at makes it difficult! I hate doing more transactions than I need to. Its just more ways for me to screw up my math LOL Try explaining to them my way and see if they let you do it. Its the same thing, just less card swiping….

Just add a little bit of water to dry food. Let it sit for a few minutes, mix it up, and let him at it. I used to have to that for my 8 pound Jack Russell mix.

If you want to go the grain inclusive Wellness route, the Complete Health Small and Toy Breed recipe is the best looking one, and super high in calories (meaning you feed even less than the others). It has a puppy counter part, as well, that is a bit lower in calories. I don’t know if the first one is All Life Stages or not. Thats now to say the rest of the Complete Heath recipes are bad foods, but those be my first pick of the Complete Health line. But I’d still go for the CORE recipes over the Complete Health ones. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yep. I have to have $20 left over after all the other coupons (I had $24 after all the food coupons, so I could use the $3 off $3 and the $4 off $20 together). You can see the competitor and manufacturer and coupons I used at the top of the picture: $5, $5, $5, $10, $10, $4. The PetSmart coupons just come off the price of the product (which makes the receipt really confusing! The two cans of cat food are rung up as 0.00 LOL).

Yeah, I noticed that after it was too late to edit and take them off the list. Sorry! The Slimdownpetproject one, or whatever it was, was just Purina Coupons, anyways. Nothing good :p

Yep! He’s really good with it. Doing his front paws is kind of a trick just because his kitty A.D.D. kicks in and he’s like “ooooh! Something shinny waving around in front of my face! Must! Get! SHINY!” LOL But he’s not horrible, and doesn’t get aggressive or overly persistent about about getting it.

Oh, I forgot to add! I bought nail caps and clippers for him. I bought the nail caps on eBay, and then the next day I bought the clippers on eBay. Both shipped from Hong Kong. The nail clippers I bought with Canadian money (I have no idea…. LOL), and they shipped out the day after I paid, and I got them today. The nail caps shipped out several days after I paid, and they should be here on the 22nd or so. But anyways, I clipped his nails just to get him used to it. He did it no problem! He was so good! On his front paws he did want to play with the clippers and bite them (he does the same with the brush, and my phone lol) but a quick “no” and shoving his head under my arm holds him off for a couple seconds. His back paws, he just sat there, belly up, like “yeah, whatever. I’m a cat.” Hopefully doing his nail caps goes that smoothly :p

Hey guys! The cat is drinking really well now (another inch gone from the fountain over the last day!), so I’ve decided to add dry food back into his diet. I’ve got a good deal on Simply Nourish Source, so I’m gunna get a small bag of the Rabbit and a small bag of the Kitten Chicken and Turkey. The rabbit one does have fish, but it’s 12th on the list, so I don’t think it matters too much, but I’d still like to hear thoughts on that. Still an hour before I get there, at least. I’m also gunna get two free cans of the Source. Not sure on the flavor yet lol

I’m actually pretty happy with Sheba, as far as over priced, cheaply made foods goes. One can of most varieties feeds 4 pounds of body weight. So my big fatty only eats 3 cans of it. I buy it when its on sale for 50 cents a can and have coupons. Makes it about the same as Friskies, I think. Haven’t worked it out exactly. And the ingredients aren’t all that bad compared to other foods you can buy at grocery stores. Some meats aren’t named, but, you know… lol

Oh boy, I love coupons! I’ll check them out :3

C4C, the Pro Plan coupon is for buy one get one. I’ve come to the conclusion that all Purina products are pretty much the same, especially the canned foods (both dog and cat) and the litters (they all smell the same!!!!! How can it be unscented when every packaged smells like flowers???). Lol That’s why I don’t have much of a problem with my select few flavors of Friskies compared to the rest of the Purina stuff. It’s cheap, and it looks pretty much exactly the same as Fancy Feasty, Pro Plan, etc. I think the biggest difference is how the food is packaged. Pro Plan is like little tiny sheds, similar to Fancy Feast, and Friskies is Pate, “shreds” (more like noodles lol), and a few others. I say to for it! What’s a few cans gunna hurt?

Pick a food that’s high in calories to keep feeding amounts (and usually costs, too!) down. My 130 pound rott mix only eats about 3.5 cups (less than half of what most foods say he should eat).

The highest calorie foods I can think of off the top of my head are the NutriSource foods. Super Performance is 529 a cup, I think, and others are all in the mid to high 400’s per cup. They are decently priced too . Around here, the 30 pound bags go for about $50-60 for the grain free.

I would find a protein source they’ve never had before and start there when pin-pointing allergies. Bison is becoming a popular choice these days, as are beef and salmon. Finding allergies does suck. I’ve got one that I’ve decided is allergic to pollen after a year a half of having him on every protein and carbohydrate mix I can find.

It was on. I think he must have seen Bentley drinking from it and decided that maybe he should do it too. I’ve not seen him drinking from it, but Bentley hasn’t touched his own water bowl in days, yet the fountain is missing about an inch of water (though I’m sure some of that is from evaporation). The cat sure hasn’t gone through that much water in just a day! Lol

Haha, if nothing else, you got a $1.33 package of toys LOL I was watching the cat eat tonight and I think I’m gunna try a ground meat with him, just so he gets a taste for it. I think I’ll try beef, since he didn’t seem to like the chicken. I’ll get a thing of stew meat (it’s on sale!) and have the store grind it up, that way I can work on getting him to take chunks of stew meat so he gets some chewing action. Once I get him going on that, I’ll start trying other cuts and meats.

Random question: he gets a really greasy spot on his tail. I brush it out every few days, but it just comes back. What is it??

The one picture up there is closer to how big they were inbetween his UTI treatment and me changing the litter to the BB walnut stuff. Still not quite as big as they were, but better than the teeny little ones he was doing after I changed the litter.

I took some more pictures last night, but they are all bigger again, which is good. One was still sorta small, but not too bad.

    http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Akari53/CA2A422E-802E-43E4-9493-E52B3009C10C_zpszwoevvps.jpg

The bigger two not in the scoop are bigger than they look, but whatever lol The smaller one is in the scoop. I think he was just on litter strike, because once I started adding normal litter back in there, he started peeing more. I dumped that litter last night (was waiting for garbage day, since he was doing better), and as soon as I got clay litter back in there, he was in the box doing his thing (I haven’t dug around in there yet, though). I guess I’ll just use this walnut stuff to spread out the clay a little bit.

The vet never gave him any fluids, that I know of. For his UTI, he gave him a shot and some antibiotics, and when I got him fixed, nothing was shaved but where they cut., so there was no way they gave him an IV or anything. After his antibiotics, he was peeing in softball sized clumps, like above, and before his antibiotics and now he’s peeing in clumps a little smaller than tennis balls. I did pull one out of the litter box like that last night but the litter crumbled and it broke so I couldn’t get a picture. I’ll see how it goes tonight though.

I’ve been looking at Natures Variety for him, actually. The canned, and sort of the raw lol About how much do the different raw diets cost? I’ve got three or so of those $3 off coupons they just mailed me, so that’s a possibility.

Here’s a picture of one of the things of pee I pulled out tonight. This one is how big they usually are, much larger than how they’ve been the last few days.

    http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Akari53/740D3329-D7AA-45D0-90DB-F88C23A9B971_zpsvknjujts.jpg

He will drink the water in his food dish that is mixed (and covering) his food. If i do the same with the broth, he wont touch it. You’d think the broth tasted better than just water…. Oh well lol So I strained out the broth that I put in earlier, and added just water. One bowl I left some of the broth in, and the other I strained as much as possible. Put them both down, guess which one he won’t touch? LOL He’ll get hungry later, he’s just being a brat lol

Yeah, maybe I will… This Blue Buffalo stuff smells so bad…! Wet coffee grounds mixed with cat pee just smells so yummy *rolls eyes*

Bentley already eats the cat food if we don’t watch him LOL The cat has learned that if he doesn’t eat it (and no one is paying attention to the dog), he doesn’t get it! He’s adamant about not eating the food with the broth in it, though. I guess I’ll strain it out over Haley and Dweezle’s food, and just give him water in it. At least he likes the water lol

I’ll call the vet in the morning and see what they have to say. I don’t have to leave for work until 1:15 tomorrow, so if I call first thing in the morning they may be able to see me before then. If not, it’ll have to wait for friday or next tuesday or thursday :/ Oh, or saturday! I actually have days to do things this week ๐Ÿ˜€ Omg, I don’t know how to handle this o.o Anyways… lol

I’ll be weird and take a picture of what I scoop out tonight :p Why is fist-sized too large? What would that mean? Anything bad?

I don’t think he liked the taste of the raw chicken. He doesn’t really like those Temptation treats, but I can still get him to eat them when he’s hungry, and he was hungry when I tried the chicken wing with him. He took the bit off my finger, and got this “what is this stuff??” kinda grossed out look on his face LOL I don’t think he likes the chicken broth either.

I don’t think its the bowl or even the pump that bothers him, I think its just the fact that its water that puts him off. He was very interested and checking it out when I plugged it back in tonight, and watched intently as the pump started working and poured water. As soon as the water started flowing, he stalked off. Not without turning around a few steps later to see if it was still spewing out water and if it was coming after him lol

I am still adding water to his food, yes. What makes me think that he doesn’t like the chicken water is that I made his food just like I normally do, only I added a cube of broth instead of some of the water. Mixed it all up like normal once the cube was melted, and he snubbed it. There is a tiny bit more liquid than usual, but its not *that* bad! Most of the food is submersed, and like last time, he won’t touch it if its under the broth. We’ll see how it go through out the night. He still has a little more than half a can to eat tonight, so I dunno what I’ll do about that if he doesn’t eat whats out.

I don’t know whats normal for him! When we got him, he was peeing in about the same amount, but less often, and there was blood in it. After his treatment, was peeing A LOT. Like 4 or 5 balls, larger than my fist, a day. Then I changed his litter the other day, and he’s back to small pee’s, but there are a good amount of them. Like I said before, I can’t tell you if theres blood in there or not because this crap is brown. The whole laundry room smells like cat pee since changing to this walnut stuff. Lots of people complain about that. So I can’t say if its the litter not doing its job in deodorizing that makes mom think his pee smells stronger, or if it does actually smell stronger. I am getting rid of this litter little by little, every night after I scoop, I add in some tidy cats to replace it. Never ever again! I’ll call the vet in the morning and see what they think I should do.

I tore a piece off and he ate it. Didn’t seem too please about it, though. I would have let him keep playing with it, but he kept dragging it in my room, which has carpet. I also didn’t want him to get it up on my bed.

I just took the whole thing apart and washed it, so I took one of his metal bowls, added two cubes and some water, and locked him in the room with it. He took a lick, and flipped out, and got a disgusted look on his face. I’m not sure if it was just too hot (I melted the cubes with hot water, making it kind of warm), or if he doesn’t like it at all. I did drop some food in the middle of the bowl, and anything that is above the water line, he will eat it, but he will not go in after it. I may have to just go for fish water…. He did eat the treat off the fountain last night, though, so thats a good thing! I’m gunna keep trying to bribe him with food and treats before going for fish water.

On that note, is there something I can add to his food to make him actually want to drink water? Like, I know lots of salt makes you thirsty. But I’m pretty sure dumping salt into pet food isn’t the best idea lol

Do you guys think I should take him to the vet? Like I said, he pees often, unlike when he was treated the first time, but its in small amounts, like 2.5-3 inches balls. I’m wondering if its just from his new grazing tendencies and my adding more and more water to his food when I put it down, and when he leaves a half empty bowl. I can’t ever breath worth a crap, but mom says his pee does smell bad like it did when he had a UTI last time, so I dunno….

    Hey guys!

To answer your chicken wing questions, it went pretty bad LOL He didn’t really know what to do with it, so he went with the drag-and-throw-it-around-and-play-with-it option. So after a few minutes I took it away, rinsed off and threw it in the crock pot with the rest of them.

I ended up with a lot more broth than I thought I would have, but it’s not like it won’t get used lol I went out and bought him a fountain bowl (30 damn dollars later, which made me have to borrow gas money from my savings account), and have tried EVERYTHING to get him to drink from it, but he won’t! I tried showing him the bowl, tried dipping my finger in there and rubbing it on his nose, tried bribing him with treats in and around the bowl. Even tried just shoving his face in it (probably not the best route LOL). I’m to the point now were just want to lock him up with nothing but the bowl (and his litter box), spike the bowl with a few more cubes of broth, and that’s all he gets the whole day until he decides to drink it. Any one have any other ideas? I left him with a treat stuck on the spout that flows down into the bowl. If he wants that treat, he has to get in that bowl and get it, and he has to get a taste of that water.

He’s still peeing in small amounts, but it’s back up to the volume where it it usually it. Looks more like he’s passing the same amount of pee, just in smaller batches. I suppose it’s back to the vet Friday morning? I don’t have another $100 dollars! D: it’s not my fault this cat is a retard…. <.<

Jakes mom, I bought 5 chicken wings tonight, one for him to eat, and maybe one for Bentley to eat, then whatever’s left will be cooked for meat-water (omnomnomnomnom!).

I did look at Pet Supermarket tonight on the way home, and the cheapest one was $20! Yikes! I can whip something up cheaper than that! I just might, too lol I’m gunna check other places and see what I can find.

Stay away from that litter! I hate that stuff! LOL

Bobby dog, it’s ok, I think it’s funny :p His license says Gary but I’m think about teaching to respond to Haru. We all call him Kitty anyways, so I might as well give him a name I’ll call him. He loves those Blue Buffalo treats so much, so I don’t think it’ll be hard. :p

He won’t let me near his teeth for long. I can get his lip up just long enough to take a quick peek at them, so brushing or anything like that is out of the question. When I got him, his teeth were all white and sparkly, but the lack of anything to chew and crunch on has dulled them considerably. I’m worried about his teeth rotting out from eating only mushy food ( most of his foods are pate style, and even the other styles are still really soft and don’t of anything to clean is teeth). He really likes to chew. Like, everything. My phone. Fingers. Plastic cases. Reusable bags. Toys. His brush. Shoes and shoe laces. I’ll try some gizzards and chicken wings I think.

I was watching Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives :p Keeps me from late night snacking (surprisingly) lol. I think I’ll try cooking the meat in the crock pot with some water, and then letting to cool over night, and then diluting it down some more and freezing it. The dogs will love the fat, and we all know Haley could use some extra LOL (she’s doing good though).

Now that I think about it, I may have to buy some ice cube trays at the dollar store…..

Oh! And I cleaned the litter box a little bit ago, and there was considerably more pee in there tonight I think he’s just not too happy with the new litter. I’ll add some clay litter in there, and I’ll take the rest of this crap back. I don’t like it at all.

I’m watching the Food Channel, and got an idea. Could I simmer meat in some water and make his meat-water that way? Would it work that way with just meat and water and no seasonings? I guess that’s basically just boiling it lol

Also, what can I do about cleaning his teeth? This canned food has got his teeth all dull and brown looking. I bought him some Blue Buffalo treats (they’re moist and have a chewy texture) but I don’t want to give them in any amount that’ll get his teeth clean because they’re full of grains and I’m worried about UTIs (though j doubt it’s enough to case a problem lol). What about a chicken wing or something every now and then? Or some stew cut beef or whatever?

I think you did. I’ll go back and see if I can’t find it.

I think it would have to be pretty concentrated at first to get him to drink it. Do you think after a while i could like slowly ween him off meat-water, and have him start drinking normal water?

I think the cheapest cuts of meat are beef marrow bones, pig knuckles, turkey necks (when we have them), and then whatever livers we have laying around (turkey, chicken, beef, calf). Some times certain cuts of lamb goes on sale really cheap, and beef for stew, and whatever else. And they can break cases, so I could get just like *one* chicken leg, or a 1/4 pound of beef, or whatever. I could certainly have fun with it.

So I just cook the meat, then add it to a bowl of water, and let it sit? Sounds easy enough! How long should I let it sit, do you think?

I’m not completely avoiding fish, but I don’t want him to have it on a regular basis. Some of his cans of Wellness have fish, but its worked out so that he only gets Wellness ever other day, and the fish ones about every other Wellness feeding. You should see how OCD-y I have the cat food cabinet arranged. It’s pretty sad LOL

It is clumping, but its soft and fluffy. Way different than clay litter. It’s *supposed* to last much longer and have no smells (a month!), but god does it lie! Nasty nasty nasty! It also doesn’t clump as strongly as it would have you to believe, either… It’s basically, from what i can gather, just BB’s version of Worlds Best, and made out of walnut shells rather than corn. I didn’t think about it being more ‘compact’. Hmmm….. I wonder it I mixed some clay litter in there and see what happened…

Its in the 80’s and 90’s now and he never wants to go back in. I have to pick him up (and he turns into Jello when I do lol), and take him inside. I bring him in as soon as I hear him start panting, which is after about 15 or 20 minutes. He won’t visit the shade at all, just likes to lay out in the grass and eat it, and hunt the squirrels from across the road.

Just so we are on the same page, what ingredients should I be avoiding?

How much meat to water do you use for your kitty meat-water? That seems cheaper than draining canned meats. lol

What are your thoughts on the litter and peeing situation? I haven’t checked the box tonight yet, but I’ll report on that when I do.

No, but he didn’t the first time around either (other than some blood, which even if he did now, I wouldn’t be able to see in this new litter since its brown). I pulled about three or four balls from the litter pan last night, which is about how often he usually goes, just its usually about 4 times more. The night before I changed the litter, he had normal amounts of pee, which is why I think its more just him being a cry baby about this new walnut crap.

    I have a question for you guys…

I changed the litter to the Blue Buffalo walnut stuff, and at first he didn’t really want to use it, but gave in a few hours later and then hasn’t seemed to mind since (this was two nights ago). I’m noticing that since switching to this litter, he pees in really small amounts, like when he had his UTI.

He did get locked in the roommates room all day one day, but he peed in her cloths, so I don’t really think he had to hold it long, if at all that day. He’s also been out side a few time and got hot to the point where he was panting (he really likes it out side….), but I made sure to extra water (on top of the water I already add) to his food after wards.

So, I mean, there have been a *few* instances were he could have gotten a UTI, but I don’t really think it was enough to cause one (two play times outside with lots of water afterwards, and a day locked in a room where he found a place to pee anyways). My thought is its the new litter, and he’s sort of unsure about it. I just noticed last night that he was peeing in small amounts, and thats the night after I started using this litter. Since then, I’ve been adding lots of water to his food. Like, he’ll lap all the water up, eat some of the food, then leave, and I’ll sneak in and add some more water before he comes back. And I’ve started back feeding him smaller meals (so that he has more chances to get water in while eating). How long is it ok to let this go on before going to the vet? I know cats don’t like drastic changes in their litter, and some are just spoiled rotten when it comes to adjusting, but if it is a UTI again, I want to get it taken care of as soon as possible.

And I know some people said fish water to get him to drink. I don’t really want to do anything with fish, so can I do, like, chicken broth, or beef broth, or something? Its the same idea, and less smelly, right? lol I’m also still looking for a fountain waterer, but he didn’t seem to thrilled about the running sink water, so I don’t really think he’d go for a fountain…

*side note: I hate this litter and once this stuff is gone, I’m not going back! My room smells like coffee and cat pee!!*

Pure Balance is cheap too, if you don’t mind Walmart.

Ever thought of couponing? I get foods like Wellness for about $1.75 a pound (or less! Best I’ve done on Wellness is $2 for every 4 pound bag). I recently paid $30 for 30 pound of Pet Botanics, 20 pounds of cat litter, several cans of cat food, and a bag of cat treats. It would have costed about $150 with out coupons (which I’d never pay LOL). And thats not even the best I’ve done!

When I get there, I will let you know how they do, for sure ๐Ÿ™‚

What?? Noooooo! Stupid Diamond… I’m sort of on the fence about them, but leaning more toward the “no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no!!!!!!!!!!” side. Some of their stuff is just sooooo tempting, given the value (Kirkland and Diamond Naturals) or their “quality” (TOTW, Canidae, etc), but I’d rather be safe than sorry. I’ve *used* TOTW and Kirkland in the past, not knowing they were made by such a ridiculous company and been just fine, but knowing more these days, I’d rather just not, as tempting as they look.

Is the 49 cents a big can, or a 5.5 oz can? That’d be nice if we were ever in the area.

Packages are always fun! I have two more coming in a few weeks, as well LOL (though they aren’t anything fun, and will probably result in a lot cat scratches when I try to use them LOL).

The big dogs like anything, so I see no problems in that department. Dweezle does well on anything, as well. Really the only thing I’m looking for is how well Haley does on them. She drops weight real quick on “bad” foods. She’s been doing good though, so fingers crosses these slightly lower quality foods will be ok with her crazy system! I’m not put her on a lower calorie food in quite a while, but it’s hot now, so we should be fine.

The NS Small and Medium Breed Puppy is pretty much the same as the Super Performance, and comes in 15 pound bags, if its something you want to try ๐Ÿ™‚ I totally want to try the 4Health foods, but Tractor Supply is just too far away. We never go out that way ๐Ÿ™
