I always look for bags nearing their expiration date when couponing. Even torn bags. PetSmart gives me 20% off torn bags if I just ask.

Does Sam’s club sell freakishly huge bottles of kefir? Seems like they have everything there :p Also, I’ve got some (expired) Centrum probiotics, the powder kind you add over food or to a drink or whatever– comes in little packets (bought them to make fish food). Would these work, for now at least?

Thanks Cavs, I’ll check it out 🙂

    Yeppers! 😀

I don’t blame you on the Purina. I stick with the One and better if I have to. The ProPlan I don’t feel *so* bad about, but the One I don’t like at all. But I have to get what I can, at the moment. I’d rather not resort to like Kibbles and bits or some off brand from Dollar General or Ol’ Roy or something @.@ So, I get the cheap brands really cheap/free/paid to take, and I mix in the better brands, like the Wellness. This is only when I don’t have money for all better brands of course. Though, because I made $7 for every 3 bags of Purina One I bought, I have a lot of it! So I need to stock up on something better before the RR runs out. I’ve got about 3 weeks of the RR mix left as it stands, but I do plan on diluting it down to 50/50 before I open the Core, simply because I ain’t made of money lol

Hmmm, that’s pretty expensive. $1 a meal? I think I’ll have to pass on that for now.

Bee pollen granules?? Where would I find that? We’ve been doing the baby wipes, and they seem to help. I got cheap Publix brand ones to start with just to try, and they dry out pretty quickly once out of the package. I’ll try the vinegar, and if that doesn’t do anything, I’ll buy a better brand of wipes.

For the vinegar, could I use a spray bottle to wet him down some and then dry him with a wash cloth? This is something that would be kept by the door, so it has to not look tacky, like a big thing of water and some towels sitting there as you walk in LOL

Coupons.com and printablecouponsanddeals.com (maybe net? Something like that… It’s a grey and blue blog style website) are good places to start. If you don’t mind Purina products, projectslimdownpets.com has good ProPlan coupons too. They reset every so often. Some of the coupons on their are currently unavailable, but check them often any ways.

You can also just look right on the retailers websites. If don’t mind it, Pedigree is doing an adoption drive event, and of you print out a form, fill it out, and send them a copy of a vaccine receipt (among other options), they will send you a coupon for a free bag up to $10 (I opted to get the sensative systems one, the better of their craptasic foods– paid like 2 bucks for it after the coupon) and free any four cans up to $5 (for the best value, get the big cans! ;)).

Oh and go to Wellness’ web site and do the check your bag thing for their coupons. These are reset monthly, and you can only click print ONCE. Luckily, it comes up and asks how many you want to print. I usually do 10.

Gotta got on google and just search every way possible. I have several sites I frequent for my manufacturer coupons. For the petco coupons, you just go to petco.com/coupons, and also just search around the site. Petsmart has good coupons every now and then, and you get those by being a PetPerks member. If you have a Pet Supermarket, sign up for their VIP program to get $4 off $20 coupons, and get mailed $5 off $25 coupons. The $2 off $10 are found in the Sunday paper, and occationally through the Internet. Like someone else said above, the ProPlan coupon this month is not on the coupon page, but on the featured brands thing at the bottom of the main page. When I’m on my computer again, I’ll post links to the sites I use 🙂

Thanks! I did the same thing I told you, only I have $2 off $10 Pet SuperMarket coupons and happened to find the $5 off PetCo Wellness ones lol In total, I got $12 off each bag, as well as them being on sale for $3 less than PetSmarts usual price 🙂 Sale ends this weekend, so if you want it, you better hurry! PetCo also has the 4 and 6 pound bags of ProPlan for $9.99, with the $5 off any size coupon 🙂

Thanks! You should try it! It’s fun 🙂 A little too much math for my liking, but it’s worth it LOL

These are going to be stored until my Rachael Ray mix runs out. I’m down to about 75/25 Rachael Ray to Purnia One 🙁 Then I’ve got about 40 pounds (maybe a little less) more of the Purina One, and about 20 pounds of Pedigree (Sensitive Systems and Puppy Complete or whatever it is), so I need to stock up on more good food so that they don’t get all cheaper food… lol

I did go to PetCo to get the ProPlan, but they were out of the three I narrowed it down to (Select Sensitive Skin and Stomach, Lamb and Rice Puppy, and Grain Free– all 6 pounds and rated at 3 stars), so I went to PetSmart and got the Wellness instead. Got to break in a cute new cashier, too 😉

My $1 per pound isn’t applied toward cheaper foods (such as Purina, etc). It’s applied to 3 star rated foods and up. For example, tonights shopping trip…

    http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Akari53/securedownload_zpsceedb94d.jpeg

Less than $10 for these four bags! If this was a lesser brand, I’d have not gotten it unless I was either getting paid for it, or paying less than 1/2 of what I just paid for this. So, I have a standard of quality when it comes to what I pay vs what I’m getting. Thats just me, though. Can’t vouch for other people 😉

I will fully admit to gratefully taking advantage of the free whatever-size-bag coupons Pedigree and Purina have sent me. I plan on mixing these lower quality foods with something much better, like this Wellness. I can’t bring my self to feed JUST one of those yucky corn filled foods (if they can even be called food!)… But right now I’m in a do what you have to position. We’ve all been there!

I’m always on PetCo’s coupon page. They put out some really good ones, but their coupon policy sucks, so I take them to PetSmart LOL I may take up that deal, actually. Anything is better than having to rehome your pets because of money issues. $1 per pound is hard, but match coupons with sales, and you can most certainly make it. Shop around and plan, plan, plan!

She’s prob’ly about 60 pounds, Patty. I can weigh her if you’d like.

The apple cider vinegar didn’t appear to have any goopies in the bottom, so I’m glad I didn’t get it. Think maybe I could get it at WalMart?

How much roughly does kefir cost, and how big are the bottles?

Is there anything I can give Bentley to help with his grass allergies? The poor guy can’t live on itch cream, baby wipes and medicated shampoo for the rest of his life lol

Haha, I’ve had that happen a few times lol It’s ok 🙂

I have noticed since adding fish oil to Bentley’s food I’ve been able to feed him less. You may recall this little 8 pound freak eats a whole cup @.@ I was adding it daily, when his fur was really bad, but since its almost back to full length now, I’ve only been doing it a few times a week. I’ve been giving him 1/2 to 1 cup now, usually closer to 3/4 to 1. I wonder if I should apply this theory to Haley? She needs the meat on her bones, not Bentley! lol

Also related to this… I was going to pick up some apple cider vinegar for Haley yesterday, but I wasn’t sure if it was the right kind! I read somewhere about unfiltered and something else, but I couldn’t find anything like that on the bottle, so I opted not to get it yet, since we seem to be on a pretty good track with those ProSence doggy vitamins. I also considered keifer, but forgot to pick it up LOL I just want unflavored, plain, correct? And how much of each of these should I give her?

Where can I get kelp and spirulina? There aren’t really any near by health food food stores, so I’m limited to Publix, WinnDixie (yuck!) and WalMart (more yuck!), and maybe Target. And again, how much do I give?

The magnesium I figured would be good for the bone health of both older dogs. The fish oil was picked for the dogs as well, for it’s skin uses. The vitamin c is for me, but if the dogs could use it, why not! Vitamin C keeps the dr away LOL

I’ll have to go up there and do that. Free and cheap dog food sounds good to me!

I get emails from PetSmart, Petco and Pet Supermarket, who send me various coupons and deal alerts. I’m always on the look out, even when I don’t need any dog food lol

The key to couponing is to match up sales with coupons, and buy as cheaply as possible. Like you just learned, buy small bags. It’s cheaper to buy crap-tons of small bags with multiple coupons than it is to buy a large bag with one coupon. Usually, anyways. Sometimes it comes out the same (in which case, mix and match flavors :p) and rarely will it come out to be more expensive. I tend to use dollars off an order, as well as manufacturer coupons and competitor coupons on each item. Petsmart is the easiest place to do this, IME.

    For instance:

Petsmart has their 4 pound bags of Wellness Core on sale for $13.99
Wellness ALWAYS has $5 off coupons on their website, reset monthly so you can print them out every time you need pet food. These are good on any size bag of dog or cat food.
PetCo usually had wellness coupons out as well, we’ll say its $3, since they don’t have at the moment. Usually it’s $5 off any bag of Core, though.
Pet Supermarket has monthly $4 off $20 orders.

Buy two bags of the wellness. Total with tax before coupons is $29.94. Apply the $4 off $20, and it’s $25.94. Apply the two $5 off any bag of wellness, and it’s $15.94. Then the two petco $3 off, and the total comes out to $9.94 for what was originally two $18 bags of dog food. There are some weird taxes applied and not applied to certain coupons, so this is an estimate, but it gives you the general idea 🙂

This all mainly depends on the store and the cashiers working at the time. I’ve Learned who I can and can’t get away with certain things with. Some stores have a strict coupon policy. Your best bet is to go in there like you own the place and know exactly what you’re doing, and do a test run. And always have a couple back up plans. I tend to have 2-3 couponing scenarios when I go out. It takes time to plan, but it’s worth it!

    That’s awesome! Good job 🙂

The closest PetLand is about 45-60 minutes away. Not the best shop around, either. Grimy and dirty, and they sell puppies. Yuck… But for 1.64 a bag of food, I could make a trip up there and get a few lol

How does one sign up for their emails? I went all over the petland website and found nowhere to sign up.

Want to take a pic of the ingredients or make a list of the first 8 or so? We can at least give you an idea until a review happens. But I agree, if it’s at Dollar General, it can’t be good at all.

My dogs are on Trifexis. We’ve got all kind of nasties here in FL, so an all in one is the best and cheapest option for us. They also have great rebates, and at only $20 a pill in the first place, it’s pretty cheap. One of our vets really pushes it, and the other promotes it (and also sells single doses!), but still favors Heartguard. I’ve heard of dogs having seizures on it, but side effects happen with any med. I’ve not heard anything on deaths yet.

Thankfully I ruled out all food allergies with Bentley (thought it was chicken, then grain, and now we are certain it’s grass or something else growing in the yard), so I’m open to just about anything food wise. He likes red meats best, but eats anything other than fish no problem (and he’ll eat the fish, he just ain’t happy about it LOL). He esspetially seems to love the chewy bits of lamb in the Purina One… Yuck! The other dogs don’t care what it is, if it’s even slightly etable, they’ll eat it (this also includes the occational dead animal in the yard, and plants the little brats unpot if I don’t keep an eye on them -_-). My nonpicky dogs make choosing a food easy :3

It’s up to you, Aleksandra. It’s just like some people continue to use Diamond. Personal preference, really. That’s a great deal on Nutrisca, though! Wholly cow. I think it’s right up there with Blue Buffalo and Innova in cost here, and no coupons (except for some $3 ones once). And no sales. Never seen it seen on sale in stores.

It saddens me that your 11 pound dogs eats as much as my 8 pound dog >.< Bentley can’t help he’s a hyper active lunatic D: lol

That’s probably it, Sandy. Too many china things to remember! Dogswell brand food is sold in Publix, and it looks good on paper, but I beleive I read somewhere about it being basically like an other Diamond product, with iffy ingredients and I think improper labeling or something? And it sports a little Made in the USA flag, while some of ingredients are not sourced in the states at all. Oh, marketing, you so silly.

Thanks Marie 🙂 Those were at the top of my list, the bottom being I think Natures Recipe and Canidae. I plan on trying everything at least once, and see how it goes. I may go back through and take out any fish ones, as Bentley doesn’t like fish. Or I may just say sucks to be him and he can eat it anyways LOL

I’ve given up on Innova and it’s side buddies. As soon as P&G’s contract to keep the formula the same was up earlier this year, Innova, Prime, Evo, and a few of their other brands had a huge, continuous recall for several months, in both the dog and cat foods. I was not happy with the whole situation at all. It started in March, and the foods are just now back on the shelves in sustainable numbers, after having been off and on in varying amounts for the last couple months. I’ll be giving them a while to figure themselves out, personally. I don’t understand why such a good company with no recalls would sell out stupid P&G!

Wellness Core is just too much. Its quite possibly my favorite grain free food, but I’m just a poor college student LOL I do have one Wellness formula on my list, it’s not a grain free though. I do intend to keep an eye out for it to go on sale on PetFlow, though. There are plenty of foods that are on my mental sale watch list :p

I’m not a fan of Nutrisca. Can’t say why. Maybe it’s the price lol It’s expensive in stores here.

It’s not so much the quality control (I mean, that’s bad yes, but we all already know the government really doesn’t care about that) as it is the fact they basically were allowed to steal all that oil and electricity! IMO, they should have been shut down right then, not gotten a slap on the wrist. If they had the guts to do that, what else will they think up??

NutriSource, yes 🙂 That’s been checked a few pages ago :p

Why would they still even be allowed to stay in buisness after all that??

Anything else on that list I should steer away from? And any others that are good, or suitable for every now and then to help lower the over all cost?

Also, what are your thoughts on Avoderm? It’s sort of intriguing– avacodo is toxic, is it not? Yet this food seems to sell so well, and I see a few people on here using it. And are either of my Canidae choices Diamond?

What the crap good does BUYING samples do for me?? I don’t have the money for that crap, that’s why I asked for some! ‘Tards…).

Small to medium kibbles would be best (for Bentley– Haley and Dweezle do fine on the smaller piece), a few adult-appropriate puppy foods perhaps, and different meats. And please don’t give me all the more expensive ones.

No, it doesn’t. Thats why I wanted to know if it was measured wet or dry (and why I should apparently learn how to read :p ). Wet would be fine, but dry not so much.

I measured Bentleys food dry (I mix kibble, canned and eggs) and even a whole cup of dry food weighed just above 4 oz (I imagine with the liquids added it would weigh a bit more, but I didn’t prepare their food as normal tonight). He eats a lot for his small size (curse that terrier activity!), but I can’t imagine him eating 4 times as much as he currently eats. Even the one cup is a bit much for him and he lounges around afterwards, but he works off quickly onces it digested….

    Hmmmm…..

It does say at the bottom there that it’s measured dry. Missed that the first time! Derp…

So that would mean my 8 pound dog would be eating almost a whole pound of food?? That seems like a whole lotta food for such a small dog! I’ll have to weigh how much he’s getting now, to compare. That’ll give me an idea for the other dogs, as well.

It says 1 cup makes a pound, more or less. But again, I wouldn’t really be able to determine that with out knowing if the recommendations on the bag are based off if it being dry or rehydrated.

So I think I’ve settled on Grandma Lucy’s for my first go around. I’m still several months off from ordering, but I’ve emailed them asked for some samples, so we’ll see how that goes. This is the cheapest, and over all best, healthiest option, at 50-51 pounds for $60-70. Petflow has also sent me various coupons codes in just the last week, so I don’t think it’ll be too hard to buy it even cheaper.

I’d love to hear your all’s opinions on the food, over all ease of use, etc. Oh, and are the measurements provided on the website for feeding before of after water has been added?

The closest thing we have to butchers are meat markets that sell “exotic” meats. I’m not sure if they get the whole animals (already slaughtered) and then butcher them up, or if they buy the meat fresh at wholesale prices. One has awesome hot dogs and sausages! *drool* Then we’ve got Ukrainian, Middle Eastern and Asian markets. And obviously grocery stores. Lol When I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll have to check out the markets and such.

That’s a good idea, actually. It’s good for my little guy to work on something, though. He’s so crazy, it gives me a few minutes break and him something to keep himself occupied with LOL I believe organ meats should only make up about 10% of the diet, so that’s something to keep in mind.

Hm, I should look into some international markets! There are a few around– more than there are butchers, though!

I work at publix. It started in Florida, and is slowly working its way up north. Kroger is a northern store, and seems to be working a bit faster south than Publix is. I think Kroge started around the Ohio-ish area? Not sure. Publix just opened a store in South Carolina. That was a big deal, apparently. I guess it won’t be long until we start seeing Kroger down here!

I find chicken necks to be too small for Bentley, and skin on the pigs feet too tough. However, the Maltese side of him makes him small and dainty, so he doesn’t have chewing power. If the skin was removed from the pigs feet, I think he’d be ok with them. His favorite bones are turkey necks and ham hocks/pig knuckles. Chicken livers and gizards are pretty big, but he figures out how to eat them just fine after a few minutes of problem solving. Unfortunately, we have squat for meats, parts, and organs, and what we do have is crazy high priced, so I don’t get to try much 🙁

Where do you live that you have both Kroger and Publix? That’s funny :p

The profile picture is done through another website. Go up to the very first subforum, and there’s a thread in there that tells you how.

Only two rooms have carpet, and only a vacuum is taken to them on occasion. Nothings used on the yard, either. So it’d have to be the grass itself, or I don’t even know what. We have a few different dog shampoos and he stops itching temporarily after the use of all of them, so I would’t think it’d be any of them, either.

We don’t use anything like that (we use a steam mop for the floors– the only other thing would be an allergy to Tide…), and it goes up his back legs, and along his tummy/chest. Grass just seems like the only thing that would touch him like that. If it was the Tide, he’d be itchy all over because he’s on all the beds (and his bed gets washed all the time) and steels any blanket he can get lol

He didn’t itch until we brought him home. My guess is that his previous home had a different type of grass than we do. We originally thought it was a food allergy, but after all kinds of crazy spending on food for him, with no change, my grandma said her friends dog had a grass allergy, so i looked it up and his itching does match up to that. It does come and go in severity, like after the grass is mowed and when it’s really tall and blooming it’s really bad, but when the grass is a week or so uncut and when it’s cooler than normal (like 80s or so) he’s not so bad.

Our little dog is always itchy too, but not the big dogs. Everyone is on Trifexis, as well. We are thinking its a grass allergy, since he’s been on grain free, soy free, and all kinds of different meats, and nothing makes any difference. Just something to consider.

Bentley (the little guy) has always eaten more than the bag says because he is so active. He’s been on almost all the Innova’s, TOTW, Puppy Chow (what he came on– yuck!), and a few others. Haley, the 65 pound one, is so old she doesn’t keep weight on very well. Slowly figuring out ways to keep her weight up. And Dweezle is a big beefy, inactive dog. Not fat, though. All are good weight except Haley, who needs a couple more pounds on her.

Right now we are on RR Zero Grain and Purina One (I know, I know, but i got payed 5 bucks to haul 6 3.5 pound bags out of the store, so I have a ton of it). They pretty much all eat the same no mather the brand. The big dogs eat maybe a half cup less on better brands. I haven’t seen any difference in Bentleys eating habits between brands, other than favoring red meat based foods.
