Ok, so a little thing I noticed…. You guys may remember me saying I got a flea collar for the cat a while back. Well, I took it off about a week ago. It hit me that his face wasn’t as fluffy as it used to be, and that he was really scratching at the collar a lot. After a closer look, he also has a scab on the side of his neck, and a bald ring where the collar sat.

Here’s a picture from before the collar:

    http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx294/Akari53/2A46772B-40BA-4DE5-890C-83F400CFB78C_zpsqi1schna.jpg

And a week after having it off.

    And here’s his neck

And him snuggling on the couch with Bentley πŸ™‚ (you can also see his neck his bald here)

I did some googling and it seems this is a pretty common problem. Some cats have even died from these collars! Why are they still selling these?? Is there anything I can do to help the fur grow back?

Anyway, I’ve been doing brewers yeast and garlic pills every day for the fleas for the last week or so (when ever they came in the mail, I took the collar off and started those instead). Whatever fleas are on him are sluggish and don’t seem too happy, so maybe it’s working? Even if it’s not doing anything for fleas, it’s helping his greasy tail, which I figured out is called stud tail and can get pretty nasty when not treated.

I’m glad you got to order them! πŸ™‚ When money is tight but you refuse to stoop to low quality pet “foods” you really do need to be opportunistic. It’s good that he understands that πŸ™‚ Do you have the freezer space to open bags and free some of them in to smaller portions? That would help with how big of bags you bought lol

No. Only $17 to fulfill their silly policy. Spent $18.96 after coupon code SHIPIT, and a bag of Cesar Millan treats.

Am I the only one not having problems with this?? Everyone on the review side is having issues too lol

Went shopping yesterday! Didn’t plan or anything, and still came out really great!

    I got:

1x 4lb bag of Hills Ideal Balance Small Breed Puppy food ($11.99 on sale)
4x 13.whatever oz cans of Hills Ideal Balance Dog food ($2.00 each on sale)
    1x Shubunkin Goldfish (I have a goldfish problem….)

    Coupons were:
-2 free cans when you buy any size bag (hanging on the shelf)
-BOGO Hills Ideal Balance Dog Food Cans
-$5 off any size Hills Ideal Balance Food Dog or Cat (jacked a pamphlet from a PetCo LOL)
-$6 off any Hills Dry Dog or Cat food purchase (prints on receipt of previous purchase)

I think that’s it… Ill have to check my receipt later lol

Anyways, got out of there for $4! I didn’t plan or bring any of those coupons with me except the $6 off one LOL We went in to find cat food for my friend, and left with all the goodies :p I should have just gotten the two free cans and not paid $1 a piece for the other two, but it’s not like they won’t get used. I figure I paid $1 a pound for the food and got the cans and fish free lol

Thanks guys! For the money we decided on Wellness Core Turkey and Duck (or whatever it is) for now. No fish, etc, and can use the $5 off any bag coupons along with store coupons and pet Supermarket does B10G1 through the store (not through the companies, so no hassle with that!). I think I’m gunna take they route too, and keep mixing dry food into the cats canned. He does well on that method, and doesn’t keep weight up as well on just canned. Lord knows I can’t afford to feed this can any more than I already do lol

Well I think when I said dry that would be what I meant :p

I told her she may have to suck it up and buy Inscinct LID Rabbit. I told her to try something with out chicken and fish, since the cat usually has chicken based foods (they tend to buy stuff at the grocery store….). We’re going out tonight after she gets off work and scooping out what we can find.

It is possible that you got a bad batch. Though Wellness has been great since they separated from Diamond, so I don’t think it’s too high on the list, but it could happen.

Most of the CORE line is chicken and turkey based (usually chicken, chicken meal, turkey meal as the first ingredients). Could be either of those proteins that they don’t do well on, or you went too fast transitioning them, if they aren’t used to getting switched around.

Thanks for the tips, guys! As far as him not liking the petting, he definatly likes it. I’ve known a few evil cats in my day, and he does not use the same body language at all. He’s like an oversized kitten that wants to eat everything. He bites whatever he rubs his face on, too. He just likes to bite and chew things, and gets excited when I offer to rub his face. He even goes as far as to pet himself with my hand lol I guess he thinks of it as a free play toy, rather than one he has to seek out? Who knows lol

He’s actually been good today, as far as that goes. Feet are his target of choice at the moment LOL I don’t mind that so much because he doesn’t fixate on it like he does biting the hand that scratches his face. He just pounces, and then when he misses (or gets accidentally kicked in the face <.<) he sets back with a crazed look in his eye and watches his prey get away LOL He’s gotten me several times in the last two hours :p

I have another question for you guys lol

Does anyone have any problems with their cats play biting? Every time I try to scratch his cheek, he gets all excited and playful and claws and bites my fingers (even petting his back, or giving butt scratches, too, sometimes). The clawing isn’t so much a problem now with the nail caps (other than the three that don’t have caps lol, but he’s not real claw-y anyways, thankfully), but he gets more and more mouthy the more excited he gets. And he’s not afraid to swat at me to get my attention to play as I walk past, either LOL I give him warnings when he starts (starts off as just gentle mouthing and nipping), tell him no, and remove my hand for a few minutes, and it takes like 2-3 times of that until he gets pretty rough and starts to actually bite, in which case i tell him no and stop petting him all together.

He does have toys that he plays with by himself now, and I have a teaser and a laser pointer that he loves, and of course him and he dog try to kill each other all day now, so it’s not like he doesn’t get his energy out! I am guilty of playing rough with him with my hands, but it’s not very often. Anyone have ideas?

I don’t really know what I’m looking for exactly. Just as low carbs as possible plus high protein and no/extremely low fish. I know the higher the protein, the less carbs it’ll have (basically).

I did see the Merrick Bistro whatever. Looks alright. It’s expensive, though, so it’s on the maybe list :p

Bobby, if you wouldn’t mind, I’d love that list! It seems like every dry food I find that has high protein and low carbs has fish in it. Is it too much to ask for a good food with no fish?? D:

And thanks for the link! That does the same thing as this:

    http://www.scheyderweb.com/cats/catfood.html

Only you have to actually do the math, right?

I looked at the Wellness CORE foods again, and they all have fish, or seem too carby. I’m pretty limited to whatever company puts out coupons, but I’m open to ideas. Earthborn is like gold, here, so I’m good on that LOL I’ll look at Merick and around on websites and see what I find.

Where’d you find the carb formula at?

I do want to rotate kibbles, but I apparently can’t seem to find a good, cheap one that doesn’t have fish in it. I’ll look at the Wellness COREs again and see if any pique my interest, as well as going through the websites for the stores around here and seeing what they have. I probably won’t even use kibble all the time, anyways, just every now and then to stretch out the canned.

When ever I’m feeding two different brands or flavors of foods, I mix them together. I don’t give him the option to snub foods lol Have you tried that?

I’m currently using the Rabbit and Chicken Simply Nourish Source. It has some fish in it, too, but its way far down. http://www.petsmart.com/food-health/dry-food/simply-nourish-source-adult-cat-food-zid36-20985/cat-36-catid-200028?var_id=36-20985&_t=pfm%3Dsearch

I remember why I shied away from EVO. Do you think that the fish that “high” would pose any problems? Especially considering that he only gets half the recommended amount because I mix dry and canned. 24% is a bit high for me, even though he only gets half! I didn’t realize that Source was that high in carbs o.o’

I heard him being bad in the kitchen, and was looking on the counter for him. He wasn’t I looked further up, since mom said she saw him on the fridge yesterday, and there he was, just sittin’ up there, checkin’ me out. I had to laugh, and go get my phone for a picture. Then I squirted him right in the face >=D He didn’t like that much lol

I’m taking the cat ones. I know both are good dog foods, but I’m still trying to figure out this cat food thing lol I’ve got Source now, and want to try EVO again in a larger bag at some point (the 2.5 pound bag didn’t last long enough to see any difference LOL).

And you HAVE to get their popcorn! It’s the kind you cook on the stove. Comes in a resealable bag. πŸ™‚

I think I only looked at a couple of the dry CORE varieties, the kitten being one of them. I was surprised at how carby it was. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a huge advancement over grocery store brands, but it’s not something I’d be looking into feeding a cat that I got having a UTI. I dropped $100 on that crap, and I’m not about to do it again! LOL I will check out the Original, though. I didn’t look at that one, assuming it’d be the least fancy. Best of all, I can get killer deals on Wellness if I watch for sales! >=D

I have some of the turkey/salmon (it’s salmon, right?? Or is it tuna? I dunno…) ones, and just a few plain tuna ones, as well as tons of the pain chicken ones ( purple can with orange strip on the label). He’s ok with them, but really wellness doesn’t seem to be his favorite. He likes Sheba, but I’ve not got a lot of that. Can’t get good deals on it, really. One thing I like about it, though, the pate ones are super high calorie. One 3 oz can per 4 pounds of cat, and it’s all meat (from what I can tell. Didn’t check them all).

Just curious, what are some of the percentages of fat on the foods you feed?

I’ve heard that, too. He doesn’t seem to favor the Friskies over anything else I feed him, thankfully, but he doesn’t get it every day. He just likes to eat LOL He really likes to steal pasta off the counter… He had pesto chicken over pasta the other night and lasagna today XD Oh, and butter. He has a thing for butter. Anyways, I think people are saying that in part because of the fact that most of their foods have fish in them, even the beef and chicken ones. I’m sure some of the other stuff doesn’t help, though!

I didn’t think I Diamond canned their own food, do they? I though someone else did. Could be wrong, though. I try not to pay much attention to them either, other than knowing what they make. Lol

Hope your baby feels better! Nothing is worse than a trip to the vet πŸ™ maybe he just got into something?

I mix the whole days food together (I feed 3 times a day) and stick it in the fridge in a sealed container. Since I have stainless bowls and can’t nuke them, I just add some hot water to warm the food up. He doesn’t care. Food is food to him LOL

We love to hear about what others do well with! I’ve heard the biggest problem with most of the expensive brands is that they are high in fat, which is why I don’t have much if a beef with the three flavors of Friskies I picked out.

My guy doesn’t seem to like the Wellness Grain Free (purple cans) very much, but he eats them anyways lol It’s a good thing he likes to eat! I personally try and stay away from fish because it’s said to be addictive and can also cause hyperthyroidism in cats. He gets it maybe once a week because some of the Wellness has it in it. For how good of a deal I got on those, I figured it wouldn’t hurt if I spaced it out with other flavors and brands.

I managed to get Simply Nourish Source dry food for $5 for the 3 pound bag, and I mix it straight into his canned. He gets just a little more than a 1/3 cup Source, and then half the recommended feeding of whatever canned I’m giving him. For canned I have the grain free Wellness, Friskies Special Diet (Beef, and Chicken and something….), and Sheba. I also have a few stray cans of etc here and there that I snagged a good deal on. I’m pretty opportunist on what I buy, provided it’s low carb (I like to stay under 2%, but less than 5-10% is fine), and low-ish in fat. If I’m just buying a few cans I don’t really care, but if I’m stocking up, it has to meet my standards.

I do want to try the Wellness Core dry, but I’m concerned at how much carbs I has. Even the Source is a bit high for me, at an estimated 10%, but since it’s only half his diet, and I add water to his food at each feeding, and monitor his litter box habits, I’m ok with it lol My friend has fed it to her cat, and she did great on it. Then again, that cat pushes their 60 pound pit bull out of the way for water, and I can’t hardly even get mine to consider his fancy $30 fountain. I also want to try dry EVO again, but I guess it’s high in fat? Idk lol

Canned really does break the bank! $5 in just canned (with or with coupons, depending on what you can find on sale to match) can only last me a few days to a week! I have to feed all my animals (god, that’s a long list LOL) on $10 a week, and I don’t feed anything I’m not fully comfortable with. Thankfully I’m always on top of sales and coupons, and can usually stock on months worth of dog and cat food for my monthly $40. I did allow my self to slip up and buy a 40lb bag of NutriSource Super Performance for $40. Only because I had been doing so good on other food deals and had been wanting to try it forever lol

Hey guys! Just stopping in to say that I ordered some brewers yeast for the kitty kitty. 1000 pills for $11 after shipping. I figure thats about a penny a day (assuming its 1 pill per 10 pounds like most others are), and that sure as heck sounds better than $10-30 a month! I’m always weird about try chemicals, and this was much cheaper, so I’ll give it a try!

Aleks, we used to use clippers for Bentley. When he was really little, we actually used human toenail clippers for a while because he was so tiny and it was hard to see the quick in his nails when using dog clippers. We graduated him to dog clippers when he got big enough, but even though we never cut his quick, he was always terrified of them. I think they hurt him when they closed down. He’s right at that size where he’s too big for the scissor style ones and too small for most of the regular ones around here. He’s got them big jack russell nails, yet he only weights 7 or 8 pounds!

I remembered a long time ago, when they were still new, my grandma bought me a PediPaws for the big dogs (they don’t need it, so it put it away), so I dug that out and it goes over much better with Bentley. He still doesn’t like it, but he doesn’t scream bloody murder for no reason or take off like a bat out of hell when he sees it. He just doesn’t like getting his nails cut. He never has lol

True. But I have a strict $40 a month budget to feed 2 large dogs, a cat that eats anything that he can get his paws on, 370 gallons worth of ponds and aquariums, 3 leopard geckos, and a Mali Uromastyx, and I’m not going to feed them low quality food, so I take what I can get where I can get it from. That said, I typically avoid PetLand like the plague. I’ve been in there like 4 times in the last several years, and only walked out with something one or two times.

Its really a pretty good food, when you consider who makes it. I said on another thread that I’d feed it over Pro Plan. Not that Pro Plan is much better than, like, Dog Chow or something. But when you consider the marketing and the whole “8 of the last 8 WKC best in show winners were fed Purina Pro Plan” garbage they like to push, I’m just sayin’ LOL

How much did you get the NS for?? I got my 40 lb bag of Super Performance for $41 because they didn’t charge me right LOL I was already happy to get it for $50, but one of the things on my order (a 1 cent doorbuster) was out of stock so they canceled it, and apparently forgot it was only a penny lol I’m certainly not complaining!

Back nails are not going as well as the front LOL Now we have to tag team him to get them on. When he’s not walking, he’s got his back toes all spread out like “WHAT THE CRAP IS THIS??” After some bribing with his favorite treats (Blue Buffalo), he’s warming up to them, but he still chews at them every few minutes. I wouldn’t have worried about it so much if his nail wasn’t glued into being retracted. I couldn’t even push his pad to get the nail to extend. Between him chewing on it, and me holding a nail polish remover soaked paper towel to it, we’ve got it out, and he’s just fine πŸ™‚ The nail still has some dirt and fur stuck to it, so I’ll let that all fall off before putting a cap on it. I think it’s from me putting three drops of glue into one of them, instead of just two. Don’t do three drops! LOL Two works just fine :p And the other nails all move just fine. I made sure the check that after the nail incident.

I’m about to do his back nails, so we’ll see how that goes lol

Alright! Nail caps are in and I have the front paws done! Well, all but one nail. I must have put too much glue in one of them, and now the only nail I haven’t done is all glued in to place. The cat isn’t very happy with me LOL Luckily the roommate has nail polish remover, so we are slowly working on getting that nail worked back out. He’s chewing on it and I’ve soaked in nail polish remover for a few minutes. He started growling at me so I let him have a break after a few unhappy noises lol I’ll work in the back nail later, as well as working on getting that one glued in nail back out of it’s hiding place. It comes out a little bit, but we’ve still got a ways to go lol

I let the gizzards thaw for a day in the fridge, then portioned them out into 4 bags last night for all the critters eating pleasures, and refroze three of the bags. I expect one bag will last me about 2 days, if I’m stingy on giving them out lol I’ve gotta spread a pound out between 210 pounds of dog and cat, so I can’t be too liberal with it :p

He really seemed to like the gizzards, though, so thats something I’ll give him again. These ones were mostly nickel sized, but some were still whole or mostly whole. I gave Bentley a half one, but the other dogs got pasta with chicken (the chicken the cat played with lol) and some egg drop soup I didn’t eat the other night (I don’t think egg drop soup would be very good reheated, but the dogs sure loved it!). They got my pasta and chicken because the cat was being a butt. As always LOL I was sitting on the couch eating, and put my bowl in my lap to take a drink, and he just HAD to see what I was drinking, and jumped on my lap to investigate. His foot landed right in my food! Stupid cat lol Luckily it was my second serving, so I wasn’t really that hungry anymore. I just took it as a sign that I didn’t need to eat any more lol But I still only took like two bites out of it….

Nah, I’ve got all kinds of stories of the dogs and rabbits and fish being brats that I laugh about after the fact too lol I’m just crazy whatcha-gunna-do-about animal lady LOL

Very interesting article! I kept the window open on my phone so I could read the other ones at the bottom of the page lol

Oh! And I tried some more raw with the kitty today! I found a 1 pound tub of frying chicken gizzards at Publix for $1.79, and I always grab a few when they get them in (someone must order them because they aren’t always on the shelf). Since these were for frying, they were already in little pieces (and smaller). Kind of in quarters. I put a few pieces over his food tonight, and he went straight for them, and loved them! My roommate also said that she has left some chicken out to thaw on the counter, and he had it on the floor playing with it… LOL

I haven’t tried it yet, no. I printed out the B2G1 coupon a while ago, and I haven’t even seen it available locally yet! I thought about taking it PetSmart and trying to get some Simply Nourish with it LOL But I won’t. They hate me enough as it is :p I do have a sample of the dry cat food coming though. I’ll likely just toss it in the dog food. Whats a 1/2 cup of cat food gunna hurt when they eat like 7 cups between the two of them? lol The dry cat food is in no way anything I’d feed to a cat. Its all corn gluten (how can they advertise no corn when its got corn gluten???) and grainy. Yuck! It appears to have very little animal protein.

Publix has all their 6 pound bags of RR dog food on sale for $7.99, btw, guys! Bust out them $4 coupons!

Yep. Yearly no matter what. Probably because it’s such a problem in Florida, and they want to make sure they aren’t becoming immune to any certain med.

I’ve heard all the bad stuff about ordering meds online. I’m not just jumping in all willy-nilly, don’t worry. This company also has a website, and sell at Sears. I’ve been eyeing it for a few days, and I’ve read over all the reviews and did a quick search for them online to see if I could turn up any bad info on them. Nothing so far! The only thing that confuses me about it, and I’ll email them when I have a chance, is that the box I’m looking at is for much larger dogs than cats. I’m sure it just has to do with how cats and dogs react to the chemicals used, but it still seems weird. I’ve gotta look into that a bit further.

    Right? LOL

It’s comparable to Program, apparently. And yes, Bentley does need to be tested. They have to test yearly here, regardless. Frontline doesn’t work down here, neither does advantage. Our vet has actually stopped selling them. The only thing that even remotely worked (besides the Trifexis, which is the only thing that works at all) is the cheapy Sentry stuff from PetSmart. It was 10 bucks for 4 tubes lol

Guysguysguysguys! I found something this cat won’t eat! (Besides raw chicken, but I’ll work him on that lol) Whitefish. Yep! I made up his food yesterday and since it was small cans I had to mix them to get the right amount ( I mix canned and dry together so that he doesn’t get picky on me). He’s never cared about what I mixed together and some of his wellness cans are tuna, but I had a can of Blue Buffalo weight management whatever and it was whitefish. In the morning he ate it, but he was like “what the crap is this?” And then after I got home from work (around 6:30), I was immediately shoved off to my grandparents for dinner and we didn’t get home until like 9 or so, so I couldn’t feed him his 3 meals, and had to give him a big meal before bed.

Usually he just munches all night, but this morning over half of it is still there LOL The BB did have a strong fish smell. I don’t think he liked that to begin with. Fine by me, but don’t waste the food, you brat! You could at least pick at it Lol I woke up entirely too early this morning, and he came up and bothered me and tried to eat my fingers, then decided he’d go back down and eat the food anyways, but I took it up since I want him to actually eat his food today and it’s been sitting out all night.

So there we have it! A food he actually won’t eat. I’m so proud LOL

I weighed him again tonight and he’s up a pound. I’m not sure if it was the scale being stupid at some point (i changed the batteries tonight because every time I stood on it I got a different weight!) or what. I’ll weigh him every few days until my cancelled order is worked out.

I think I’m actually gunna try this instead, though.

It’s also sold at Sears, but it’s much cheaper on Amazon. I’ll be getting the $19.49 one. It’s the same seller, just the one linked has an option for free shipping at $35. I read the reviews and the bad reviews are from people that don’t understand how it works. They were expecting something that killed adult fleas and kept them away when really what this does is kill young fleas and eggs. And I think it makes the adult fleas infertile, basically. But I’ve been looking at a bunch of flea stuff tonight, so maybe not LOL Don’t feel like looking. I also told mom she needed to get Bentley back on his Trifexis. The poor guy looks like he’s been swimming in fleas.
