Its always when you buy a case, or commit to a larger purchase to stock up that they stick their noses up to it! Works every time! (Except my cats now are kind of piggies, and they aren’t very picky as far as cats go) I have used the HALO whitefish pate before and the cats have really liked it so after I went through a case of chicken, I ordered a case of 12 of the Whitefish a month or so ago, because all the other cases of food I got had chicken in them and the price was decent. Well, let me tell you, I don’t know if the smell has changed, or if I am just more sensitive to it but it smells so bad that I can’t stand to feed it, it makes my apt smell sooo fishy and gross. The last case of Wellness Turkey/Salmon I got a few months ago was particularly stinky too, more then I remember that variety usually being but the Halo was extra bad. I don’t have that problem with the NV Salmon, which came in the variety packs I ordered. My cats really like the turkey wellness, and that one actually smells good but I just feel like if I can avoid feeding carraggenan (sp?) I probably should, especially with one that’s pretty prone to diarrhea

If she isn’t feeling well, she may be starting to associate the litter box with her discomfort. I would definitely ask your vet about the diarrhea to see if there is anything you can give her in the short term to help her bowels until she has had time to adjust to her diet. This may be a probiotic such as forti-flora, or often times giving a little kayopectate can help a lot, but again with such a little kitten that has recently been through so much, I think consulting your vet would be best.

I decided that I love WB cat litter, so I just ordered a 28lb bag from chewy. It was $22.99 which is a better deal then I can find locally, even with the $3.00 off coupon. Like a much better deal, so I ordered it, and then I don’t have to pay sales tax or lug it home. I also added in a case of Natures Variety LID turkey cat food for $24.00 which I shouldn’t have ordered really, its too expensive, but I have been liking feeding my cats the Nature’s Variety, its the best food I have found that they will eat (unlike nature’s logic)

He is smart though, when I tell him to go get his monkey, he will go looking for it in the other room and I know he has found it when I hear it start to scream. Half the time he brings it to me…lol

I am so glad he is feeling better C4C….it is so gross to have to be on the lookout for dogs passing inedible objects though. ….. dogs….

Rudi does tear the stuffing out of his toys but he is still a little baby so it takes him longer. He will be 5 months on the 14th

That is amazing about the fleas. I have to admit that during flea season, I use a preventive on my indoor only cats, and the dog lives at my parents house so he doesn’t come into my home to bring fleas to my cats. I have just been there with the flea infestations, when frontline stopped working a couple years ago and the dog must have brought in fleas and he and our 18 year old house cat were totally infested and it was a nightmare. I was using revolution, and I was glad of it when Wyatt escaped last June and was on the lamb for 3 weeks living in the wilderness. He got out like 2 days before he was due for another dose, so when I finally caught him he was already almost 3 full weeks overdue and there was nary a tick or flea on him. I was impressed. More recently though the last time I applied revolution to Wyatt he got a tiny little patch of missing hair exactly where the revolution was applied so I talked to my vet and I switched to Activyl, which I gave them this last month…it is supposed to be the safest of them all, although it only does fleas not ticks, but hopefully he won’t escape again…anyway, the activyl seemed to give him a burning sensation after I put it on because he seemed like he was trying to run away from it for a few minutes. I don’t know what I am going to do next.

I would ask your vet about the goats milk, I don’t really want to advise something incorrect 🙂 At the cat shelter I worked with we always used KMR if a nursing mother wasn’t available

I would put her on canned food. Wellness grain free kitten seems to be a highly digestible and palatable food. I would discontinue the goats milk.

Bobby’s mom… I found the website for the toy, I didn’t realize it is in actuality called a screaming chimpanzee dog toy but it is, (nothing could describe it better) so it was easy to find with a google search…lol…. If you scroll halfway down the page you can play the noise it makes to hear it. Rudi LOVES it.

Akari: I definitely can’t beat you on that deal!! I don’t have a Pet Supermarket here, we have some local/regional chains, several local boutique pet supply stores, a Petco, and then the Petsmart is actually a 20-30 minute ride down the turnpike so I don’t go down there very often.

I spent a ton of time with Aaron in the 4 months he was at the shelter, and I never saw him play once, he used to hide behind the cat tree and was very sweet with a big purrr but very very very nervous and afraid and pretty traumatized. His previous owners got a divorce, and apparently they moved out and left him behind alone in the house, abandoning him by himself for a month until the husband who said he didn’t know the cat had been abandoned came and found him and brought him into the shelter. So I do feel bad that I can’t get his teeth all removed but overall I am ok with it because he really does seem genuinely happy and comfortable and has made so much progress. and I know I take good care of him and do the best I can.

Its true, I forget that NB has been sold since the last time I’ve fed their food. I was feeding their LID green pea and chicken canned cat food for a little while, but haven’t in a long time. I have tried some Stella and Chewy’s freeze dried raw reconstituted but that wasn’t a hit, and I am a little nervous about feeding frozen raw, that I am not really comfortable with it yet…but I look at it a lot and I think about it.

My older cat Aaron has stomatitis, and I really need to have all of his teeth extracted but I can’t afford to do that right now, so I know he does live with some degree of pain and inflammation and infection but his quality of life seems really good still, he eats enthusiastically, plays, cuddles, and gets more and more comfortable all the time. He came to me with this, I adopted him at 10yrs old, and his oral health wasn’t noticed at the shelter until I took him to my vet as soon as I adopted him. Anyway, to get back on topic, the stomatitis is either caused by or results in (which came first the chicken or the egg) him being pretty immuno suppressed and so I don’t think feeding raw is a good idea. I take him to the vet and treat the pain and infection if it flairs up and he seems escpecially stoic, hiding, not eating etc. A full mouth extraction is very expensive.

I am so glad to read the positive review…it seems like every review I have read has been extremely positive so I am definitely going to get one of these. Our last dog ate more like a cat. He would pick at his food throughout the day so this is like a shock.. Our puppy now doesn’t choke or cough or anything like that after eating but it really does seem like he eats really really really really fast and this would be a really good thing. I try to feed very minimal dry food to my cats, I have them down to about 1/3 cup a day split into two feedings between the two of them(although its the tubby one that eats most of it, he prefers and eats more of the dry food the other one prefers and eats more of the canned food) but I got http://aikiou.com/ and it really seems to help a lot, it slows him down so he can’t just chow down all his kibble at once, and that seems to have him eating a little less. I really want to eliminate all kibble from my cats diet, but Wyatt really really really loves his crunchies and he looks and begs for them. He likes canned food, and he does eat the canned, they get about the equivalent of a 13oz can a day (total for the two of them, split into 3 meals usually) but its been hard for me to completely kick the kibble.

My cats have the same reaction to the NB pouches. I am sure Aquariangt’s cat would really like them because they are really the same exact thing as the Wellness pouches, just a little cheaper. I have reduced the volume I feed my cats gradually over the last year or so in an effort to get excess weight off my tubby guy(which seems to be working) and it definitely seems to make them more willing to eat things they wouldn’t eat before, including some of the stuff with bigger chunks, but the big shocker to me, was I bought some cans of HALO Spots Stew a week ago or so because I had some really good coupons so I got a really good price on them, and I wanted more variety than comes in the pate versions. Well the thing about Spots Stew is it has big chunks of veggies, whole peas and big chunks of carrots that always wind up rotting at the bottom of their dish….until now. LOL. I don’t know if the cats are really just hiding the veggies somewhere, but when I get home in the evening the bowls have been completely cleaned including the veggies. This really makes me laugh, I hope I am not starving the poor things lol.

I am thinking about getting one of these to try out with my puppy because he eats sooooo fast. He finishes his whole meal in under a minute easily. 1 1/4 cups of food in about 30 seconds can’t be the best way to eat. lol

aquariangt: cats seem to be really crazy about dark meat tuna. Working to help people trap their lost cats, it is usually recommended to use either people tuna or most preferably sardines as bait for the trap because they are so stinky. But my experience with my own cats is that they really aren’t that crazy about people tuna but they love love love love love Solid Gold’s tuna for kitties…it comes in a purple can with silver stars on it and it is a mix between dark meat with chunks of white meat tuna in it and I use it for a really special treat. The other thing I give my cats once in a very great while for a little junk food fix is one of those Meow Mix cups the tuna and shrimp kind that doesn’t have any gluten or anything in it and that is also the red tuna, which is the same that BFF uses.

Hi Bobby’s Mom 🙂 I would say that is probably highly likely… I do remember reading on the last can of CSCLS I bought (one of the old ones) a copyright to Diamond pet foods, and while I have never noticed such a thing on Taste of the Wild before, the label on the case seems to indicate that it is the same sort of situation, so it would make sense if they used the same cannery.

C4C: I hope your dog is feeling better, it is always freaky when they don’t want to eat (especially individuals that usually love to eat). I definitely hear you about the dented cans…that was the main reason I abstained from ordering cans online for so long, I was just really worried about that but eventually all the Pet Stores locally increased their prices so much over the last couple years that it became worth it to try, and when I did have an issue with dented cans, my big fear, it was handled not only to my satisfaction but my expectations were far exceeded. So I am now really comfortable with it. But I only started ordering online a few months ago. I seem to remember that it was no longer than 2 years ago that 5.5oz cans of Wellness cat food were being sold at the local retailers for $1.49 a can (Petco pricing is always higher) And now I can’t find it for less then $1.89 a can. That is an incredibly substantial price increase.

I have to be honest and say I am not sure who cans the TOTW food, however it seems that TOTW is actually a Diamond brand, like Chicken Soup for the Soul. When the case arrived the label on the case reads: Diamond Taste of the Wild. That doesn’t mean that Diamond actually has a cannery although certainly its not great that it is their brand.

Well pouches of food are much much better then no wet food at all 🙂 Glad to hear she liked the sliced Wellness enough to eat it. Was the canned Weruva the BFF? The BFF are all some combination of tuna, and the contents of the cans are from what I was able to discern the same as what comes in the pouch. So I am wondering if there is something about the lining of the cans that she can taste that she doesn’t care for, that isn’t in the pouches or something like that. My cats only like some of the Weruva cans. A lot of them are really really fishy, and only one of my cats will eat those, and some others like the Steak Frites, or Peking Ducken (or whatever its called) don’t get touched at all once they drink the gravy. They like ‘Funk in the Trunk’ and grandmas chicken soup and paw lickin chicken but only if fed on occasion. I try to feed tuna only on very rare occasions, but they do like the BFF tuna and chicken and some others.

I just ordered another case of Taste of the Wild Rocky Mountain cans for them. The texture is similar to the sliced Wellness but my cats are like bananas about this food. It has always been one of their very favorites, and while I was trying to avoid TOTW, the price is right, I have never experienced any qc issues myself, the cats like it, I approve of the ingredients, so I am really ok with having it in my rotation. As a side note the price really is ok if I buy it online…. I just got this case from Chewy for $20.99 for a case of 24 3oz cans. My local pet stores only cary the 3oz cans and sell them for $1.39 each.

Hey guys, somehow I missed the rest of your responses. What great ideas!
Akari, I was thinking about the Walmart site to store thing, but I really wasn’t sure how it worked, or how I could do that. Next time I think I will just do that because I can order less than a minimum and not have to pay for shipping. Plus I think they use Dog Chow, so probably next time it would probably make sense to just send em what they’re already using. But I just couldn’t bring myself to do that this time. I ordered a 30lb bag of TOTW High Prairie Puppy and had it shipped to them from Wag.com. I used a first time customer discount and paid $38.99 total. My package tracker says it was delivered today, so I feel better now that I feel like I did something to help, however small that may be.

For those of us that do not feel confident quite yet in feeding raw bones, I would like to find a safe and quality edible chew/bone type of treat. Something to occupy his time. I have been told to avoid pig ears.

Also, for training treats I have been using Ziwipeak daily dog venison and fish dry food, they are perfect little squares for training, and they’re very high interest, he loves them, we adjust his mealtime portion of his regular food to allow for these as treats and its actually a pretty cost effective way to treat I have found/

When indoor only cats get out they usually freak out immediately once they actually get outside and hunker down and hide very very very nearby. So if he does get out and you can’t find him… that is where he will be. Trust me I have been there. Took me 3 weeks to finally trap my cat last summer after he pried open a window screen and got out. I hung hundreds of fliers, spent countless hours canvassing the area, and trapped about 50 possums and raccoons. And this cat is very friendly and very confident, but once they get outside everything changes. I have him chipped no collar but he wasn’t letting anyone get anywhere near him enough for a collar to help anyway. https://www.facebook.com/MaineLostCatRecovery I help out with these guys now and there are some helpful hints on here incase you ever need them.

I ran into that story (not from that news source, I just pulled that up randomly) about a year ago when I was looking up information about cats and rabies, after the CDC published a really inflammatory story in tandem with George Fenwick, president of the American Bird Conservancy (can you say bias and conflict of interest much?) about TNR programs and colony maintenance posing serious rabies exposure risk to humans…like possible epidemic. And put it on the cover of USA today.

Luna moths are very very pretty as long as they are not flying near my face. I don’t know what kind of moth I saw on my sliding glass door because I could only see its belly/body but it was big. Its the flying around my face thing that really gets me. I don’t like butterflies to get too close to me either. You know how some people like to release butterflies at their weddings instead of throwing rice or birdseed? That sounds like a nightmare.

June bugs gross me out because of the sound they make, so I am sure Palmetto bugs are just…. I need to stop thinking about them because I had to go ahead and look up a picture of them and eeeek. I am not afraid of spiders, but I do remember that in FL there are spiders that are like… almost as big as my hand. That I am not comfortable with. If they chased me I would run and scream. But regular run of the mill little spiders I actually don’t mind having around the house cause they catch other things. My cat does kill those too though. I find spider bodies. I think he eats the moths though.

I like that bats are around, I just don’t want one getting in my house. If you wake up and find a bat is in your room/house you are supposed to get a rabies shot because I guess people don’t always know that they have been bitten by a bat. So I think it is the most common way people get rabies.

    *edit for typo*

I HATE things with wings that can buzz around my face. Like moths… I hate moths. Luckily I have 2 indoor cats that are more than happy to dispatch of any flying insect that gets into the house..especially the younger cat…mostly him…he broke one of my lamps last summer moth hunting. We do get luna moths here which are so big and freak me out. I don’t know if that was the kind of moth I saw on my sliding glass door last summer or what but one night there was a moth on my door that was soooo big it was horrifying. There is no way I was going to take any chance of letting that guy in my home that would be so disgusting and the cat would kill it and it would be the size of a small rodent and messy and uggggghhhhh

I only very recently started buying canned food online, because I was worried about getting damaged merchandise, but all of the local stores have started to really raise prices so high that I can get a very substantial discount purchasing online and I am on a pretty tight budget and I use a lot of canned cat food so it was worth it to try. So far I have ordered 4 months worth, so 4 orders, 1 from Pet360, and 3 from Chewy and I have been really very pleasantly surprised. Now I did get one case of Wellness canned cat food (the big cans) that had 3 cans that were severely dented, so I contacted Chewy and they sent me a new case for free (all of the cans were 100% perfect in the replacement case) right away, so it arrived 2 days later, and they didnt ask me to send anything back or go through any of that hassle. They just suggested that I consider donating any of the “salvageable” or bonus cans to a shelter. It worked out being like 9 free 12.5oz cans of which I put 6 in my donation box (just being honest), but I do buy a lot to donate, I currently have about 75 cans of various sizes to bring in as well as about 30lbs of dry food. So the long and short is that I have been pleasantly surprised so far.

ugggghhhhhh I am soooo not a Florida person. I just don’t do well with heat and humidity or all those creepy crawly things. I remember my Grandma telling me the fire ants can kill a person. And I have heard many disgusting stories about those Palmetto bugs. I do have the heebie jeebies just thinking about it.

When I lived in Southern California, I did see scorpions crushed on the road sometimes, and a good sized lizard got into my apartment and was hanging out inside my closet one time he snuck in somehow….. but no mosquitos it was so nice. Now I live back in the North East… which definitely is mosquito country (I grew up and went to college in NY state) but here in Maine we don’t have any poisonous snakes or spiders. Or fireants. Or Palmetto bugs. It makes winter seem not so bad 😉

It should be fine as long as the seal on the cans isn’t broken and you don’t see any bulging. Petco is having the food shipped in from a warehouse as well. I live in the far North East, and I had this concern over the winter as I accidentally left a can in the car overnight and the temperatures went below 0 degrees F so I looked into it because I was afraid after bringing it back into ambient room temperature it might be bad once thawed but everything I found said it is ok.

Cats are *obligate* carnivores. They absolutely must eat meat.
