Kristin-every time I research that question, I find so many answers. I think it depends on the size of your dog, how large they will be as an adult. Smaller dog breeds mature quicker and can be on puppy food for shorter periods of time. I have heard Giant breeds should stay on puppy up to 18 mos. Since I feed the smaller end of “Large Breeds”-Golden Retrievers, I think about switching around a year. Oliver was a little over 1 when I transitioned to adult food.

I know that puppy food has different nutrients and is usually more calorie dense so weight gain and more can be a concern. One source said when they reach their adult height, (about a year for my Goldies, and then they fill out) is a good time to transition.

There are many more knowledgeable folks on this forum, so I know they will have more input! What kind of pup are you feeding?

Aquarianqt- I did realize that. I think I’m guilty of trying to push for a review for the new Fromm’s large breed grain free puppy! Is there a forum for those requests? Thanks!

Orijen Large breed puppy: Oliver, now 2, thrived on it! Leo, now 7 mos., did not do well on it. So we fed Fromm’s Gold Large Breed Puppy and have now transitioned him to their NEW Fromm’s Prairie Gold Large Breed GRAIN FREE puppy! So now, both dogs eat Fromm’s Grain Free line and we love it.

Oops. Yes. I didn’t even see which forum– saw only “Lab and ear issues.”

I know others will write more in depth, but I had the same issue with ear infections with my sweet lab Bess. All her life- chronic ear issues. She’s gone now (she was 14) but I wish I knew then what I know now. I would have fed a grain free diet. I know that would have helped immensely. If I were you, I would consider a gradual switch to a quality grain free dog food. I feed my Goldens grain free Fromms and they are thriving, but there are many choices out there. Good luck. Let me know what happens with your Lab!

Hi Michael – thanks. I did know this. I actually spoke with the Fromm’s head nutritionist when I questioned whether I could put my puppy on their lamb and lentil grainfree- my 2 year old Oliver thrives on it!! He told me about this new food but I haven’t been able to see the ingredients list as of last week. Where did you find the info? I would be very interested in feeding this but I would hope it would be a highly rated food!

I have 2 Goldens. Oliver, now 2 was raised on Orijen large breed puppy and continues to eat grain free. Leo, now 5 months is eating Fromms large breed puppy, but I am transitioning him to Orijen, so he too can be grain free. Wellness Core Puppy would be my next choice. And besides being grainfree, (Goldies are notorious for skin issues,) both foods, Orijen and Wellness, have the DFA’s 5 star rating and are for large breed puppies. That helped me decide. Also, there is a new article about feeding large breed puppies on this site you will find helpful! Make sure you switch foods gradually if you change them. I made that mistake with Leo, and have changed my definition of “gradually.” Hope this helps!

Out of curiosity, I just looked that up for you. It’s listed under one star dog food on the Dog Food Advisor website. There are plenty of better choices and a wealth of information on the site. If you if I were you, I would change to a better quality food. Good luck!
