Ok. I’ll check them out. I have not seen victor or hi-tek. I live in a suburb of Seattle, Washington. If I understand what you said earlier is that both puppy and all life stage foods are fine for any age. But adult foods are only ok for adults, not puppies.
Wanted to let you know that you recommended turkey necks for my pups about a month ago. I finally got brave enough and got some at Mud Bay. Of course they loved them. Kept a close eye on them and they did fine. Have a great day!

Hi-

I’m sure my furry boys would love to eat 20 cups of food if I would let them! This is frustrating. I’m sure a lot of consumers are willing to pay a little more for all the “extras” in the food that really aren’t of much help any way.

Is there any other food that has a different protein such as lamb, or beef that you would suggest that is similar and about the same price that I could rotate with?

That is the answer I was hoping for. Thank you. I really wish I would have thought of that before. I would just have kept them on puppy food. I’ve learned so much. I had never even read a nutrition label up until about a year ago. I feel bad I didn’t know as much with our previous pets. The Whole Earth Farms puppy looks just about as good as the Blue Buffalo Life Protection I’m feeding them currently at about half the price. I notice it doesn’t have the glucosamine in it. But, I can always supplement I suppose. Don’t really think they need it yet, do they?

With six pets, a son in college and another son starting in the fall, I really need to cut some costs.

I have found a great website regarding cat nutrition as I have also been looking for quality cat food at a reasonable price. The author does not recommend any dry food at all, but has a couple of charts of canned food that include fat, protein, carb, and phosphorus levels. It was eye opening to me. I know they do come in different sizes. My dogs are 80 pounders, so was looking for heavy duty grips. They sure have worked out great though. I hope you can find something that works for you as well. They have been a big stress reliever for me as my dogs will try to eat and swallow everything quickly before the other one gets it! Good luck!

She’s very cute. One of my pups has, what I call a squishy face, like that. My cousin thinks they are part hound due to it. Who knows for sure. Did not get them (brothers) from a reputable breeder. They came with parasites and not really sure exactly they are really breed they said they were. Oh well, expensive lesson learned. Was in mourning from our 13 year old dog that passed and didn’t spend enough time choosing new pups. These new boys, however, are very sweet and friendly. Whatever they are, they’re ours! Thanks again for your help. By the way, your dog is so cute with his hat on:) I will check in to suggested probiotics. I chose that one because it had all 3 in one. When feeding separately, I felt like I was giving more supplements than food! I’m glad you have heard of using DGL for dogs. I had never even heard of it, let alone for dogs. My next question is, if going to be giving probiotics long term, is it necessary to choose kibble that includes it? Also some kibble show fermented probiotics. Is this a better form of probiotics? Happy New Year!

Hi All-
My dogs (lab/retriever mix) have been off and on antibiotics for the last year due to arriving with giardia. I had never even heard of it before. My first vet explained they would be carriers and never totally get rid of it after 3 treatments. After their next episode of green diarrhea, I went to new vet and he said that wasn’t true and we tried a stronger treatment of metronidazole and dewormer. He also suggested pre/probiotics, digestive enzymes and DGL. I was happy that he was trying something new. We have had 2 negative fecal tests so far. What a relief! He also recommended food change. I was using Kirkland. He liked raw best and suggested blue or nature’s variety. Wow! A vet that didn’t recommend science diet. So, anyway doing all of the above now. We have had a huge improvement in stools. Not perfect yet, but much better. I’m guessing after reading this website, it could take 6 months to totally recover from all the antibiotics they have taken and having parasites in their guts. My question is; is it safe to use these supplements long term? Will they become dependent on them? Also, wondering if anyone has heard of using DGL for dogs? Im using Vetri-probiotic BD right now. It has pre/pro and enzymes in it. I’m not sure about long term use.

Hi Hound Dog Mom- I guess that all makes sense. Just grew up thinking all bones are dangerous for dogs. But, I did go to our local Mud Bay Pet food store yesterday and bought two marrow bones and a bag of turkey necks. Gave them the bones last night. Of course they loved them and woke up this morning looking for them! They are so aggressive, I was worried they would break a tooth! I will try the turkey necks later this week. I’m definitely gonna keep an eye on them. They are such gulpers. They have swallowed whole socks! We were told they are lab/retriever mix. But everyone says the one definitely looks like he has some blood hound also. And you know how they are about eating everything in site. Lol! They are a year and a half old. im hoping they will grow out of the chewing stage some day. I also checked out the raw food website that was recommended. I’ll have to say I was a little grossed out. But, prices did seemed cheaper than Mud Bay. I guess the days where it was recommended to only feed dogs kibble and to find one they liked and stick with it are over. Somehow I ended up with 4 cats and 2 dogs. (I can never say no to a cat) I’m trying to feed the best and still feed my human boys too. Lol! Thanks for the advise. I have learned a lot from this website. Maybe too much, our pet food budget has doubled.

So, when giving a turkey neck or chicken back, do they eat the bones too? Is this safe? Sounds a little scarey. My dogs are such “gobblers”. I’m going to check out the website. Thanks for your suggestions.i really need to keep these dogs busy 🙂

Hi- I often see that many on this forum suggest giving raw meaty bones to their dogs. Which type of bones are the safest and where do you get them? If they still have meat on them, would they be considered a meal? Also, wondering if you should boil them or anything before giving to dogs. My dogs (lab mix) are extremely aggressive chewers and looking for something safe as well as something to keep them busy and satisfied for more than 5 minutes. Help!

You are right, they would still be eating basically same thing every day still. As for having two bags open at same time, I have two 80 lb dogs. They get through them pretty quick! Thanks for your advise. I’m probably trying too hard to do better with these two than our dog that passed from cancer last year.

Do you think it’s a good idea to feed one food in the morning and a different one in the afternoon? Such as, two different brands of kibble? Or better to feed the same both meals and then rotate to new after a few months?

Hi- this is my first post. I have 4 cats. One of every color! Also, two dogs. They are lab/ retriever mix. They are two boys, Griffey and Buhner, litter mates. Bad idea getting two pups at same time, but we are trying our hardest to train them to be good dogs. Anyway, on the subject of bullysticks, they absolutely love them! We too are very concerned about blockages as they will eat anything. They will swallow these things well before they have chewed them completely. So, to solve this problem, we put them in a vice grip (the bullysticks:)). This way they have to chew them to the nub and can’t swallow them.
