I scoured this thread back in September when I was choosing a food for our 8 week golden retriever puppy, it was so helpful! We transitioned him to Wellness Core Puppy and his stools began getting softer as the transition progressed. (breeder had him on something from Sam’s Club, can’t find the name, nothing good from what I remember when it mentioned in thread, but his stools were FIRM when he was only on this) Anyhow, he’s now 16 weeks old, stools are still loose, I’ve tried adding probiotics and read that I should add enzymes so will try that. For some reason, the updated large breed puppy food list won’t open on my computer…..we are reaching the bottom of Wellness bag and thinking a switch is in order…wondering if anyone can suggest a calcium safe puppy food that would help with loose stools?? Also, any recommendations on enzyme? Thanks for your help! As I can’t access updated list, I’m stuck and I have got to get a new bag ordered!

GYaccino, we are having the same trouble with our 16 week old golden puppy. Wondering what has happened for you? WHat food did you switch to and has it made a difference? Our puppy is on Wellness Core puppy and honestly he’s been a bit loose since we transitioned him to this at 8 weeks. Getting to the end of the bag, thinking we should transition to something else now.

I was here a few weeks ago asking a few questions about food for our new golden retriever puppy who came home 6 days ago. We are loving on Murphy every chance we get 🙂 So, I decided on Wellness Core Puppy. He was started on Exceed with the breeder (think that’s the name, maybe Excell, its from Sams Club). I don’t beileve this is a quality food, I might have read in this forum its made by Diamond? Anyway, we started 6 days ago giving him 25% Wellness, 75% Exceed. Did that for 3 days. Now we are at 50/50 for day 3. His stools the day we brought him home were solid and firm. Stools have progressively gotten looser and looser, to the point this morning they were diarrahea. Getting concerned about Wellness??????? I would greatly appreciate some advice if anyone has had the same thing?

So, after cramming for “dog food final exam” (also know as bringing puppy home!), I have narrowed down my choices. Puppy is 8 week old golden retriever. wanting to be grain free and obviously concerned about calcium and large breed puppy concerns. I am between Earthborn Holistic (Coastal Catch and Meadow Feast) and Wellness Core Puppy. These are all 5 stars and on the list that HDM so generously has put togerher and shared (THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH!) I like that Earthborn has 2 choices, so we can rotate foods. I would love thoughts about one versus the other if anyone has them! I am so thankful for the dog food wisdom shared on this site 🙂

Did anyone else have troubles printing the newest version of list on page 15? For some reason, my computer (a mac) won’t print, says ” safari is redirecting” or something similar. anyone else have this?

InkedMarie, I guess I’m getting everything all confused….I can’t keep all the reasons straight as to why one food is good and one is not 🙁 After seeing the ingredient list you posted, I think her reason was that a “meal” protein product is main ingredient as opposed to an actual product such as “turkey” or “deboned chicken”. So her reasoning was that a non-meal product (ie deboned chicken) is better than a meal product. I do understand that reasoning, but I am going CRAZY trying to get a food chosen for our puppy!!!! Yes, I believe Golden Retrievers are considered large breed, will get to @70 pounds and up. I am wanting to stick with a food that is on HDM’s large breed puppy list. As I mentioned, Merrick looked like a great food, but it’s not on HDM’s puppy food list. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Hello All! So glad to have found this forum, lots of great knowledge! We are getting a 8 week old golden retriever puppy this coming Saturday, very excited! Our last golden lived to 15, we lost him 2 years ago. Amazingly enough, it’s a whole new world in the dog food world for us now…We fed Rusty Nutro Max and he lived 15 years, though it seems that isn’t the best food out there. We want to start off on the right foot with this puppy so are trying to make food decisions. I was wondering about Merrick, looks like a great line, but I see it isn’t included at all on your calcium chart Hound Dog Mom (thank you for putting that together!)….So wondering/assuming the calcium levels are too high? The other food I really liked was Earthborn Holistic Meadow Feast, but a worker at a pet store talked me out of it, saying it’s 1st ingredient is sweet potato, rather than a protein source. My hopes for a food are: grain free, meets safe calcium levels for a large breed puppy, and wondering if I should avoid potatoes as they are “yeasty”, our 15 year old always got ear infections, and wondered if it would be helpful to avoid these. Help save me from this vicious dog food circle I am stuck in! I’d love to hear your expert opinions 🙂 We also can’t afford the way hi end foods….
