As Cesar has pointed out many times a fear based dog doesn’t just charge and attack without warning like a truly aggressive or “red zone” dog would. A dog with pure aggression is not going to wait for you to do something he doesn’t like, he’s just going to attack.
I recently had an experience with a dog that had dug himself under a fence and was stuck on the other side of his fence on 5 inches of a tie-out. When I came up to him to try to help him he was barking at me. Most people would have been terrified thinking the dog was aggressive. To me it was obvious that he wasn’t aggressive, he was simply territorial. However since I really couldn’t help the dog since I can’t just open someones fence and put their dog back in their yard I called animal control and they grabbed him. He did not bite the officer, he did not try to do anything to her at all. In fact he lowered his head when she approached him and let her put the leash lead on him.
I told her when she got here that he didn’t seem aggressive just territorial.
As much as you might think you can’t “read” a dog, you certainly can. Which is why Cesar’s idea of DOG psychology works so well. I personally don’t think I’m the god of training dogs now, but what I have taken away from the show is how to interpert dog’s queues a lot better.
PitloveMemberI’ve used the Vension and Duck and Turkey. My dog is a picky eater and wasn’t really a fan of vension. I think it was too exotic of a protein for him. I think the food is fantastic and I recommend it to a lot of people at work. But it’s not for every dog. If you have a large to giant breed puppy please read the thread Hound Dog Mom made about foods for large to giant breed puppies. NV is one that has some formulas that are great for large breed and giant breed puppies
PitloveMemberAlso I’d like to add that I have never seen Cesar alpha roll a fear based aggressive dog. I have seen him do it to dogs that clearly are “red zone” as he calls it. I think that his techniques are great, but as the show STATES do not attempt these methods without consulting a proffessional.
I feel that the way he deals with fear based aggression is humane. Apparently everyone disagrees, but oh well. We all have our opinions.
Most of what I described above I got from Dog Whisperer. I can’t see any of that as being inhumane.
PitloveMemberI think Cesar Millian has some great tips for fearful dogs. He would definitely tell you that most likely her “aggression” was feared based. I.E little girl with a covered head so she could not be seen well.
I would NEVER EVER do what L M advised. When you comfort a dog that is in a fearful or frightened state of mind you are nurturing that state of mind. Talking to the dog during that time and trying to use human psychology on the dog (which is what L M’s advice was) is going to make the dog associate whatever you are saying with that moment of fear.
You are not going to be able to talk to a dog and reason with her. They frankly have no clue what you are saying especially when you are speaking to them as if they were a human child, using long sentences.
It also didn’t help that the parent of the little girl could not read your dog and could not tell that it was a fearful growl and bark not an aggressive one.
My suggestion is to find someone who is a close friend of yours who trusts you and your dog and has a child, have the child put a hood on and stand a distance away from your dog. See how she reacts. Then have her take the hood off and see if Honey’s attitude changes. I would take one recommendation from L M which is that for now til you know what triggers her, keep the child a safe distance. If you can recreate the situation that you experienced at Petco but have the outcome what you wanted I.E the parent having her daughter take off her hood and let your dog see she means no harm, I think you can help your dog greatly and also pinpoint triggers for her and then have your trainer advise you on further action.
If she is being trained as a service dog or going for a CGC cert, she can not react like that towards anyone but especially not children.
PitloveMemberFunny enough the only time my dog really had a problem switching foods was when we went from Blue Wilderness to Nature’s Variety Instinct. I switched him recently from NV to Orijen and I started out transitioning him the normal way and then when I got to 50/50 I just ended up giving him all Orijen and he was fine. I’m thinking about adding The Honest Kitchen Perfect Form supplement to his diet and trying to just switch him to his next brand without transitioning. I would love for him to have the proper flora to switch cold turkey.
Chewy.com actually ended up being cheaper than Petco where I work even with my discount! Really nice. Thankfully I only have to feed a dog and a cat and my little kitty is my champion eater as I call her. She is not picky at all unlike my dog. Trying out Weruva and Tiki Cat for the kitty from chewy.com as well. 🙂
PitloveMemberGL with the change wolff! Let us know how the Wellness Core does. I just ordered a case of the canned food myself off of chewy.com and I would like to use their kibble in a rotational diet for my pitbull. I’d really like to know how your giant breed dogs do on it as I myself have a large breed dog. He’s 66lbs
PitloveMemberFor both my cat and dog I have been using PureBites freeze dried treats. I love that its just one ingredient (I do beef liver for my dog and turkey breast for my cat), I can get them at work (Petco) and they do say they are made with US meats.
I’ve seen a couple other people mention them here. I have gone through a lot of other treats and truthfully treats have become just that in my house…a treat. It is a rare and not every day thing they both get. But they both love PureBites.
PitloveMemberThanks guys! really appreciate the help
PitloveMemberthank you very much. that is a helpful list. and ya i wasnt necessarily looking for that perfect number, just curious as to if there is some range people like to stay within or dont like to go over for dogs with skin problems. seems like the highest one that i see repeated is around 22%. I was thinking about staying under 20%, but 22% wouldn’t be terrible. I can start from there.
PitloveMemberrofl ya I feel like that was a typo..there is no way. Still though, 10% seems damn good
PitloveMember/dog-food-reviews/wellness-dog-food-core-canned/
so that food is only 1% carbs?!…I’ve seen a few that are around 10%. That seemed good to me, but I’m finding it hard to understand how potatoes can be so high on the list but this food is 1% carbs only
PitloveMemberBasically I keep noticing potatoes being used for a lot of canned foods, even ones that he really likes such as Whole Earth Farms, within the first 5 ingredients. I suppose I made the assumption that if it was in the first 5 ingredients it would go against me in terms of fixing this yeast problem. I guess I’m looking for an idea of % carbs would be too high for a dog with a yeast infection to start with.
