MemberHi Beverly D. I have three toy dogs. A Maltese, my avatar is my 15 1/2 year old Maltese Hannah. That photo was from last year when she was 14 years old. I also have a 5 1/2 year old Maltipoo, Katie and a 5 1/2 year old Yorkipoo, Lola. They are all fed commercial raw foods that I have been feeding for the last 3 years or so. Katie, my Maltipoo, was a basket full of food intolerances and other issues as she was the runt of someone’s litter that I rescued so not to have her euthanized. Due to all her food intolerances and my research I found DFA and schooled myself on canine nutrition. All three of my dogs are doing remarkably well and Katie has been off of all antihistamines, over the counter and prescribed, for the past three years. If you want info on the commercial raw dog food companies that I feed and trust please let me know. I have done extensive research into all of them and trust their foods and the companies. But I will say that these foods are what work for my dogs. All dogs, as humans, are individuals and different.
As far as I can remember, please go to avatar.com and follow directions. I have a Mac Book Pro so it was fairly simple. If you’re working on a windows computer than, I’m sorry, but it’s been too many years since I’ve used a windows computer to be of any help.
I’m going to go onto avatar right now and see if I can refresh my memory and walk you through the steps.

Participant12 pounds of Wellness CORE Puppy (3x 4lb bags), 7 pounds of Ideal Balance Lamb and Rice (2x 3.5lb bags) and 6lbs of BilJac Puppy Select. They get 4.5 cups between the two of them. Haley is 12 years old, 55 pounds , and Dweezle is 11 years old, 130 pounds lol The scoop I have holds 1.25 cups. Haley gets 1.5 scoops, and Dweezle gets 2. This should last… 3 weeks? Just a guess. Since its mostly high calorie puppy food, and they’re old and lazy, I can probably drop how much they get if it ever warms back up for a decent amount of time. I have to feed them more in winter, being outside dogs (Bleh…. Can’t wait to move out!). The garbage can is on a small 6.6 gallon can, btw.
Whew, barely made it!
BilJac looks likes rabbit food… Lol

MemberHi Akari. Yikes, they’ll go through all that food in just two weeks? Am I ever lucky I only have toy dogs. Wow! What sizes are those bags? You can’t tell from the picture. I tried to enlarge the photo to see if I could tell but couldn’t. I thought my dogs were eating me out of house and home now with the little they eat. I know you work your magic with coupons but that’s a lot of food for just two weeks. I know Haley’s not too big but I don’t remember how big Dweezle is.

ParticipantI was making up some meals for Bentley last night, and remembered I had a ton of beef tracheas in the spare bedroom (where I keep all my dog food, cat litter, treats, supplements, etc) so I pulled out the open bag with 5 pieces in it, and stuffed them with smelt, ground beef, and beef heart.
I’ll have to post pics of how they go over when he gets one. They’re randomly mixed in with his other meals in the freezer lol

ParticipantI had a lot of problems with my dachshund coughing and reverse sneezing as a result of her step in harness pressing on her neck in just the wrong way. I found one that works great, and is available in-store, for a decent price. The brand is Pet Atire. It’s still step-in style, but has a padded, non-adjustable neck and chest piece. Costs about $13 for a small.
She doesn’t have a problem with burns, but my oldest dog, a 12 year old lab mix, does and she goes naked while at home and gets a choker when a leash is needed (or a very loose cheapy, thus thin and flexible, buckle collar when I can’t find the choker). There’s just no other way, her skin is too sensitive to collars.

He targets the goldfish tank because he has a small cat tree right next to it, so it’s easy his excited moods to carry over to the wiggly goldfish when he jumps up into his spot lol Here’s a pic of the tank. This is a 3ft long tank. You can see how big Bruce is lol

Mountainhound, when you have a dog with a list of health problems as long as Ginger has, including extremely poor dental health, let me know how raw works out. I’m 100% for raw feeding, two of my pets are raw fed, in fact, but it’s not the only answer to every situation. The best of the best, when it comes down to diet, is simply what works best for each dog. Ginger can’t handle the fat content in raw, and the bacterial content would wreak havoc on her already infected mouth and poorly adapted digestive system. I’ve spent enough nights washing dog beds, thank you very much.

Member@Oleanderz, you are on the right track and in good hands with the pros of this forum! 🙂
So, about exercising – obviously not while she’s recovering from the surgery, but anytime she’s well, appropriate exercise depending on health conditions (joint and bone health, any other underlying conditions, etc.) – usually good long walks/jogs/runs, depending on what Lucille can physically do/endure will be good. Fetch sessions, swims, etc. are other ways to exercise that seem like a game.
Yes, Dr. Tim’s does have big bags! Unfortunately, only big bags… I really wish he packaged in 4-5 lb bags cause I have fed 15-lb bag of his Kinesis GF, but it lasts a while, and I like to rotate more often. One day when we get another dog in addition to Bruno, I will so get 15-lb bags and be cool with it! 🙂 Victor has 30-lb bags of the GF formulas and 40-lb bags of the grain-inclusive formulas.
I am very happy with using THK as a topper and would continue to use it! It makes it so easy to make my dog flavorful, nutritious, extra-hydrating “soups”. I probably would do one topper at a time, so either EB’s tub, or some THK, etc. Treats are still ok to be given, but I’ll get to that in a second. I usually still add a tiny bit of water even when I add canned. IDK about the EB tubs’ consistency, but I like pate style canned, so when I add water, it becomes nice and mushy with the kibble. But that’s just me. Like Dori said, you don’t have to ALWAYS add water, I just choose to do so and Bruno doesn’t seem to mind at all. And he still drinks his water from the water bowl too. Also, once you get Lucille accustomed to rotation, you can totally mix brands, for example using Victor or Annamaet kibble with Earthborn tubs, or Nulo canned, etc. Nulo is also pretty good, and if you email/Facebook the company, they will send you coupons for it. Annamaet sent me samples, and so did Dr. Tim’s. At sportdogfood.com you used to be able to purchase Victor samples for 33 cents/piece, and get up to 3 samples per recipe. So you can totally try them out first before buying, but I really think that all of these are high-quality foods.
Now, I second Dori on everything – free feeding is not a great practice, nor is treat “overloading” while trying to establish good eating habits. So do as she recommends, if you want – cut treats out, pick up food after 20min if not eaten. Try again at the next meal time. I have a feeling though, that once you start rotating and adding toppers, she will be pretty excited to eat her varying meals.
Also, like Dori said – most fruits and veggies are just fine, EXCEPT for onions, grapes, and raisins. I feed Bruno the same things Dori listed, and more, and he’s doing fine. Again, no seeds or pits cause they may be toxic. If you read the ingredient lists of many of those foods, they include a wide array of fruits and veggies that are safe for doggies to eat. So don’t stress it TOO much, but if you ever decide to add broth instead of water to Lucille’s meals, just make sure it has no onions in it.
Ok, so below you will find Bruno’s meal setup for the year – food lineup and toppers per meal. I am now out of the Sojo’s for the weekend toppers, but have a few cans laying around, so that will be the topper/meal instead of Sojo’s. We are currently on the second food in the food list – Wysong.

MemberLet’s see if I can explain it – you go to photobucket.com, set up an account, then upload your photos there. Then go to Library (where your photos are), and when you click on a picture, on the right hand side there will be different options on how to post it. I use the HTML one (but the IMG one will work too) – just click on the code and it automatically copies, then come and paste it in your comment on here and your pic will appear after you submit your comment. This will make more sense if you read it while actually using Photobucket, lol.

MemberMy 10-week-old Shiloh Shepherd, Galen, is now on Holistic Select Large and Giant Breed Puppy Health Lamb and Oatmeal Recipe Dry Dog Food. He loves the food, and his stool consistency is great! His growth hasn’t been as fast as some of his siblings, but I see that as a good thing, for the vet says he’s a perfect weight for his frame and in great health. This looks to be taking excellent care of his joints. After all, when it comes to growth, it’s not a matter of how quickly one grows, and in large dogs it’s better that it be slow and steady (but he still grew 20% in 10 days- 20 to 24 lbs). The genes will dictate the final size.
It’s important that I look after Galen’s joints properly, for he’s training to be a service dog, to help with my PTSD and spine injuries. I was fortunate enough to find an organization that is quite happy to help train owner raised dogs, for after the Shiloh Shepherd I rescued 20 years ago (I didn’t even know he was a Shiloh at the time), I knew the breed has what is perfect for my needs.
February 1, 2015 at 6:18 pm #65702In reply to: Okay, so how often can you actually bathe dogs?
DO
I noticed if you check out petco.com they have 2 kinds of hoses 1 for bath 1 for shower. I use the shower kind, i don’t have to remove my shower head it clips on to the attachment which i leave on my shower head.
Since Pepper & Millie sleep with me well you understand, they must be clean.
I clean them (not as good as a shower) each time they come in from their walks feet face, booty.
I am embarrassed to say I used to use a watering can to get the shampoo off Pepper, that wasn’t fun. When i found this at petco, it made bath time so easy.
The 1 you posted from chewy looks nice.

ParticipantSo I got a couple of the PetCo calendars and used all the free and bogo free coupons for donations. Only things I kept were both cans of Natural Balance dog food (got a buffalo and a venison), and a can of Ideal Balance poached salmon dog food for something to try out, and both Nutro Natural Choice tubs, both Natural Balance cat food pouches, and the two Natural Balance dog food rolls because I figured they would get squished with all the canned goods and bags of dog food (also did a puppy chow deal at Publix). Squished donations are never good lol
Anyways, I tried out a pouch of the Natural Balance cat food this morning and I was pleasantly surprised at not only how calorie dense it is compared to other pouch foods (2 pouches per 5 pounds) but also at how nice and meaty it was. Not to mention, the cat loved it. After his bowl was empty, he proceded to lick any leftovers off the carpet! LOL
Here’s a pic of it. Sorry it’s upside down. It’s right side up on my phone, so I guess photobucket had a bit of a heart attack? Lol

ParticipantWow, I totally replied to this but it didn’t post lol Anyways, eventually I’ll go all raw, but for now I’ll do it a few times a week. I want to get me cat food stash down some before I get too serious. Then I’ll keep it on hand for when I go out of town.
This morning it the first homemade raw meal for the kitty! I let him taste the organs and bones a couple nights ago while preparing it, and he actually loved all of it! I opted to feed on a plate, rather than his small stainless bowl, in hopes that he won’t drag it around. I’ll also lock the dogs up and feed him in the kitchen so if he does drag it around, at least it’s on the tile and not my carpet LOL
This meal is about 3 oz, with some beef kidney, a small bit of chicken breast that apparently escaped the dogs meals, and a nice big chunk of thigh. Dinner will be another 3oz, and have the end of a wing, and I think I saw some chicken liver in there, and more thigh/leg meat.

Just got back from PetCo and picked up 5 free cans of Halo Vigor! Can’t wait to try it out on him. Also picked up a can of Natures Variety Pride. I still don’t think that stuff is very good because it’s all saucy, but it’s something different. PetSmart has it on clearance, so I pick up a can every now and then (they can’t seem to get rid of it lol). And the other day I got 10 cans of Fancy Feast Elegant Medleys, whatever three flavors don’t have fish in them. Only got those because I had b5g5 and $1 off 10 coupons, so I only paid a couple bucks for the lot. I definitely plan on going back for more Halo Vigor. It looks like a great food, and free makes it even better! Coupon lasts until 2/28 or something like that, so go check it out!
Akari_32
ParticipantIt’s just under $20 for a case on P4P (and shipping is $4). You should really try applying! You never know if it’ll work.
Did you see the Dietitic Management canned food? That actually looks better than most “premium” foods as far as protein and carbs goes. It’s really high protein and super low carbs. It’s not something I would mind using just to use, provide it didn’t have anything in it that would hurt a cat that didn’t have diabetes (haven’t looked that far into it lol).

ParticipantCloser look at the exclusions for the cat food.
Maybe it doesn’t include canned food?? That sucks 🙁
Akari_32
ParticipantYeah, I’ve definitely been keeping an eye on the quality of Zukes. It’s one of the only two cheaper brand of treats that I’m ok with giving Bentley on a regular basis because of his yeasty problems. The other is Pet Botanics.
I don’t see an exclusion of the canned PVD on the form, but it may go more in depth on the website.
Do you buy them by the case, or in single cans? I wonder if it’s on the cardboard part of the case.
And it’s too bad you don’t live closer! I could order your cat food through Purina 4 Professionals and get it for you at 50% off the suggested shelf price.

ParticipantThe rescue pays for everything including food if you request it. Since I taxi the pugs around town alot, they’ve also given me gas money. There is also a rescue store sort of local to me (70 miles away) where rescue folks can get food for dirt cheap. I volunteered to drive out there this past weekend to pick up a load to pass out to other fosters. You would need to email me direct for info on that. Somehow I’m really good with the dog names, it’s human people’s names I can’t remember! If I have 10 dogs here, I can remember them all. The bath photo was from several years ago and I can still remember 3 out 5 fosters’ names without looking them up – Harley David, Victor Newman and Lulu. I keep photo albums of all the fosters.
Akari_32
ParticipantCheck this out, guys! I totally forgot about this! I’m a Purina Pro Club member, which means I get money back from (just about) every Purina brand purchase I make! The PVD gets me particularly good points 🙂 Here’s a list of qualifying products:
Here’s the part of the package you need for redemption (“weight circle”) :
For every 7000 points, I get $70 back to spend on dog food! There is also a similar cat food program. For two months of Gingers food alone, I get 156 points! Considering it’s only about $12 a month after shippin to feed her, that’s pretty awesome! I also get the Purina One canned food for the other dogs sometimes. In fact, I’ve got about 8 cans in the cabinet right now. Now if only Friskies Special Diet and Tidy Cats was included in the cat food. I use so much of that… Lol
I really do recommend anyone that uses any amount of the Purina products listed to sign up for this program. You might as well make some money back, even if you don’t buy a lot. The points never expire and they do roll over if you don’t redeem them all at once. You get pet food checks, Purina “stuff,” various gift cards, dog show and event gifts. Stuff like that. (Or could just mail all your weight circles to me *cough* just kidding lol)

Ok, so I feed the above toppers with the 1/4 cup of kibble as noted. You can use other fresh food toppers, like I see you have – raw or lightly cooked ground meats are great, raw or lightly cooked eggs too, cottage cheese, cooked veggies/leafy greens, some fruits (I give fruits raw), raw meats/raw meaty bones, canned sardines, jack mackerel, or salmon (not tuna – too much mercury I hear), yoghurt/kefir, coconut or fish oil (or both), canned pumpkin is good for fiber as is flaxseed meal (and the latter also gives Omega 3s), etc. There’s a lot to choose from that you can add, but let me recommend that you also add some warm water to the kibble. You may choose to soak it or not, but it does help with hydration and for ease of mixing oils, eggs, yoghurt, dehydrated foods, and just about anything else. It may look gross and soupy in the bowl, but it is so good to our furry friends, and they will slurp it all up nonetheless! At least Bruno does! 🙂

ParticipantAnother great source of cartilage is beef trachea. I used to get raw trachea from GreenTripe.com but they are huge and hard to cut up (for me anyways).

ParticipantTo post a picture through photobucket, you upload it there, and copy/paste the “direct link” option, and it’ll show up here as a picture.
Ask all the questions you want! I don’t care lol

ParticipantBeen getting some kitty snuggles tonight :3
I’m gunna try that gauze thing with him. His teeth are gross. He loves to chew things, so I wonder if those hard blocks of catnip are maybe worth a try? Something to chew on… PetSmart and Publix sell them for a couple dollars a piece.
Oh! And Publix has all their Sundown Naturals vitamins 50% off so I grabbed two of these for just $10!
I’m considering buying more lol I also bought three jars of fish oil pills for Haley and Dweezle for a couple dollars each :3

ParticipantWe went shopping for a new harness today! Mom paid for it, even though she doesn’t know it yet ;P
It’s a little loose, but I may leave it that way. I was looking at how her old harness fit over the tumor on the front of her chest (not the one visible in the picture) and that one is defiantly getting larger because the center strap was tighter than is was when the harness first went on (it was still plenty loose, though). So, as long as she doesn’t slip out of this harness at the size it’s at, I’ll leave it how it is. Hopefully she doesn’t cough and hack with this new harness. She was doing better once I loosened the old hardness, but still did a little bit.
And yet an other twist to all this dog drama, Ginger pooped in the house the other night because mom refuses to feed her in her cage and leave her there until she barks to go outside to poop (she still doesn’t really ask to go out unless she’s in her cage), and mom started tweaking out that there were worms in her poop (actually, she’s convinced it was Bentley, but I know it wasn’t– he asks to go out several times before resorting to going in the house, and he hasn’t poopped in the house in ages, he’d rather pee all over the living room and make as large of a mess as possible out of spite. Not to mention it was too big to be Bentleys).
Anyways, after a bit of shopping around, I settled on as broad of a spectrum dewormer I could find for a decent price and dished out $13 for two Sentry HC Worm X Plus pills, which treats two kinds of tapeworms, two kinds of roundworms, and three kinds of hookworms. After some reaserch, any worms that are visible in the stool are usually tapeworms, and one kind of tapeworm is passed through fleas, which are a big problem in this area, due to low income pet owners, outdoor cats, and it being Florida in general.
What I can’t decide is that if she’s had them since before she got here, or if it’s a relatively recent development caused by her favorite game, pick-up-random-poop-on-walks-and-run-away-with-it-(and-try-to-swallow-it-before-the-human-gets-me!). Either way, I’m not sure if I should treat Bentley as well. He’s on HeartGuard, which does certain worms, but not tapeworms. I don’t want to mix the ingredients with out knowing what mixes well and what doesn’t, and I don’t want to give it to him if he doesn’t need it (though I don’t think worming when not needed causes any harm?).
So anyways, if anyone has any insights to offer before I give one of these to Ginger, please do so! I would greatly appreciate it. Now, please excuse me while I bash my face against a wall…. -_-

ParticipantSo I cought a glimpse of Bentleys teeth this morning, so I lifted his lip and was surprised at what I saw!
I can’t believe his teeth are this yucky still after having been on raw for so long. He really doesn’t get much ground, most of it is large pieces of meat and sometimes little chunks, and he gets a bone about once a week. I mean, his teeth aren’t terrible, but they aren’t fantastic, either. Weird. I’ve got a lot of chews for him that I just got from PetFlow, so I’ll make sure he’s always got something to gnaw on and see if his teeth clean up at all.
