MemberThanks to everyoneās input thus far.
Iām interested in keeping Fury on a kibble diet. So for those suggesting Raw dog food, raw freeze dried, etc. Thanks for taking the time but no thanks.
Thanks for the input, Pitlove. Iāve transitioned Fury on 2 different types of food and both with a 10-day transition. Transition to his current food also took about 10 days and while his stool was soft at first, now his stool is the ideal firmness and color. The shelter was giving him chicken flavored food, he did okay with it so I figured heās alright with chicken. His current foodās got Turkey, Duck, Quail so I think poultry is okay for him.
Iām thinking of either switching him to
Taste of the Wild Prey Angus Beef or Trout flavored next since their nutrition data are very similar to the food heās on now.Iām just not sure if I should start him on a rotational diet :\

MemberThanks for recommending the brand, crazy4cats, will definitely look into āem š
Thanks for explaining that, Susan. I donāt use Facebook otherwise I would join that group, haha. š I will be sure to look for food that has balanced Omega-3 and 6. Thanks again š

MemberSorry to hear that the rotational diets were disastrous for your pups! D:
That is also one reason why Iām not super sure whether to try rotational diets or not, I have heard a lot of disastrous stories about āem.Thanks again for your advice š

MemberThanks for the response, pitlove.
I guess when I read the ingredients, Iām turn down by the numerous questionable things thatās in Royal Canin. I also wanted to look for another brand/flavor of food so I can rotate my pup through that. Should I look for/aim for something that is as close to what RC provides?

MemberThanks for the advice, Susan! š
I definitely do plan on rotating his kibbles once I know what Iām looking for and what his body likes. I have read/heard about the 2-weeks thing for kibbles and keeping food inside an air-tight container. Iāll be sure to do that š What kind of profile dog would you recommend me looking at? Just all-life stages or growth or should I expand to maintenance and/or unspecified profile?
Iāve been taking numbers for Omega-3s only but Iāll be sure to make sure that itās sitting at around half of Omega-6ās % and check out Wellness Simple Turkey and Salmon flavors.
Canidae Pure Sky, Pure Wild & Pure Sea are all on my list of food that I am researched. Iāll be sure to double check all the numbers, especially when it comes to Omega-3 and Omega-6.
Lastly, I was told to by the vet to wash him once every month. How come you suggest a weekly bath? Is it to wash off the allergens? Wouldnāt over-washing also get rid of the healthy oils?
Thanks again for all these good tips š

MemberBeen catching up on everything thatās been discussed since back in ā12. Thank you to everyone who has contribute to the topic/discussion.
I have a question on what to feed my Lab/GSD Mix. The shelter estimated him to be 2-years old. They were feeding him Royal Canin Medium Adult so I thought to keep it as his food. That is, until I discovered the numerous questionable ingredients. I also noticed that my dog would be scratching/nibbling on his back every so often, not constantly but still a cause for concern. So I thought to attempt to combat this with some grain-free food. After much research, I settled with Whole Earth Farms Grain Free Chicken/Turkeyā¦seeing that itās not only affordable but contains decent ingredients.
My pup loves food so he has been chowing down WEF with no problem (for 18 days now- including a week of transition time) but Iāve noticed that heās been shedding a lot more than usual and small clumps of hair is falling from his tail. I also discovered a 2ā³ long (literally a line) bald patch where his back and hip-bone connect (ruled out fleas). Iām not sure where itās from but I have a hunch it may be caused by WEF and their lack of Omega-3 data (they wonāt say how much Omega-3 is in their grain free chicken and turkey recipe, just that it is formed naturally in the ingredients)
Due to this reason, Iād like to transition my pup to another food that has at least the same amount of Omega-3 RC has (they said .48%). Should I move him back to Royal Canin or try another type of food (whether with or without grains)? I guess I just donāt exactly know which type of food to look for. When I started researching I looked for food that has Growth and All Life Stages profile. Then I looked at the numbers for protein, fat, fiber, Omega-3 %, Calcium and Phosphorus % and C:P ratio.
But now, after reading some posts on here, it seems that the Calcium and Phosphorus % is not as important as my pup is now 2 years old but the and ratio should still be between 1:1 ā 2:1? Should I still be focusing on Growth / All-Life Stages food or should I broaden the search and look at Maintenance and/or Unspecified profile?
Ah, so confusing D:
I guess I just want my pup to eat food that is close (or better) to what RC offers, without the questionable ingredients. Here are the data I gathered from RC:Crude Protein ā 23%
Protein (DMB) ā 25.56%
Crude Fat ā 12%
Fat (DMB) ā 13.33%
Fiber ā 3.1%
Fiber (DMB) ā 3.4%
Omega-3 ā 0.48%
Calcium ā 1.20%
Phosphorus ā 0.80%
C:P ā 1.5:1

MemberThanks for the advice, Tyrion.
I did research both Under the Sun and WEFā¦but neither of āem will say what their Omega-3 contents are, just that itās formed naturally in the ingredients they use.
For this reason Iām now very reluctant about trying another WEF flavors and Under the Sunā¦seeing that my pup got issues with WEF and their unknown % of Omega-3s. :\

MemberThanks for the advice, Anon.
I thought to start small and base things off the recent changes that occurred and that is, his diet. Everything seems relatively normal when he was on Royal Canin. Iād just like to switch him to some other brand/flavor that doesnāt contain ingredients like āchicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, natural flavors, dried plain beet pulpā.
