Lifespan varies a great deal, from about 17 years to around 35 years. Smaller horses live longer than larger horses, just like with dogs. If Smokey hadn’t had a very hard start in life, I would expect him to live to about 35, and he may yet, but because he came from neglect and abuse, he has aged a bit prematurely.

I know someone who had a regular horse live to be very close to 50. We don’t know exactly how old he was, we just know what year his old drunk owner used to ride him to the bar and when he was done drinking, he poured himself back on his horse and let the horse take him home. That was 23 years before my friend got him and she had him for another 25 years after that.
