The first ingredient in this dog food is chicken broth. Broths are nutritionally empty. But because they add moisture to a dog food they are a common finding in many canned products.

The second item includes chicken. Chicken is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin… derived from the parts or whole carcasses of chicken”.1

Chicken is naturally rich in the ten essential amino acids required by a dog to sustain life.

The third ingredient includes eggs… a desirable addition. Eggs are easy to digest and have an exceptionally high biological value.

The fourth ingredient mentions carrots. Carrots are loaded with beta-carotene, minerals and dietary fiber.

The fifth ingredient lists oats. Oats are rich in B-vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber.

The sixth item lists is chicken liver. This is an organ meat sourced from a named animal. So long as it’s not over-weighted in a dog food, chicken liver is a beneficial component.

The seventh item is brown rice. Brown rice is a quality ingredient… a complex carbohydrate that (once cooked) is fairly easy to digest.

The eighth ingredient includes peas. Peas are a quality source of carbohydrates. Plus (like all legumes) they’re rich in natural fiber.

Guar gum is a gelling (or thickening) agent found in many wet pet foods. Refined from dehusked guar beans, guar gum can add a notable amount of dietary fiber to any product.

And lastly, this food also contains chelated mineralsminerals that have been chemically attached to protein. This makes them easier to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better dog foods.

Freshpet Select Homestyle Dog Food
The Bottom Line

Although we label it a canned dog food, Freshpet Select Homestyle is actually a stew-like recipe sold in refrigerated tubs.

And judging by its ingredients alone, this product appears to be an above-average wet food.

But ingredient quality by itself cannot tell the whole story. We still need to estimate the product’s meat content before determining a final rating.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 27%, a fat level of 18% and estimated carbohydrates of about 47%.

Both products report the same nutrient percentages as our chicken example.

Below-average protein. Below-average fat. And above-average carbohydrates… when compared to a typical canned dog food.

Free of any plant-based protein boosters, this looks like the profile of a fresh refrigerated food containing a fair amount of meat.

Bottom line?

Freshpet Select Homestyle is a plant-based wet dog food using a moderate amount of chicken or lamb as its main sources of animal protein… thus earning the brand three stars.

Recommended.

I also struggled for years to find a pet food my Shihpoo, Daisy, would like and that was also good for her. She loves Freshpet Select! While it may be more expensive, it doesn’t go to waste like so many other quality foods I have bought for her.

  • Gordon

While egg yolks and fresh eggs for dogs are super nutrient rich for both them and us humans, probably right that it’s overkill on a daily basis. Just a suggestion gj – Why not try topping it with low fat, high probiotic yoghurt, on alternate days to egg yolk? I add yoghurt every second day to my dogs’ kibbles and I can tell their enthusiasm is that much more, than when I just have their kibble alone present. Although, they’re even more enthusiastic when they’re presented with raw food.

Try the yoghurt idea. It may work.

  • gj

my maltese is thw pickiest , i feed her blue buffalo chicken, have tried the other varieties of that brand. she doesnt like any of them. will only eat if I put egg yolk on it; and that cant be good for her every day i really need some advise

Hi CJ… These other product lines are still on my To Do list. Unfortunately, getting through so many of them takes a good while. We should be getting to at least some of them soon. Thanks for your patience.

  • CJ

I just saw your comment about getting to reviewing the other products as soon as you can. Can’t wait! :)

  • CJ

I noticed the freshpet select homestyle product has been reviewed and I was wondering about the other products they offer:
    -Slice and Serve
    -Bites

Some of the ingredients are different and listed differently as well.

I bought this trying to feed my dogs healthier food but it only made her sick. About an hour after eating it one began throwing up and continued. First two times all the food came out but then she still threw up stomach bile 6 more times. I checked on my other dog who had gone outside and discovered he had thrown up several times too. It may be good for some but not for mine. Will never buy it again and plan to throw out what is left.

  • Sheryl Vance

Melissa, thanks! I’m gonna go get a can of that chicken and rice from tractor supply right now. My little picky Keaton has to smell of everything, too.

  • melissa

    Sheryl-

If you have not tried it already, try different flavors of canned, rather than different brands, same flavor./ My really picky Iggy will eat with gusto Merrick canned(but nothing containing buffalo and the sort) and 4 Health(tractor supply brand) canned chicken and rice. He is very careful to sniff the foods first before trying, so if the smell does not “smell good” to him, it gets ignored.

  • Meagan

Sheryl- It is available to me at theisens in Iowa

  • Janice D. McCollam

Picked up a couple of tubs of the Freshpet Select chicken at the grocery the other day to use as a topper to my dogs’ kibble. They ate it heartily! I use various can foods to top their kibble and they also get raw medallions for one meal. I think, though, this food is a little more expensive than just can food, so I won’t buy many. I will continue to use it as one of our toppers, though.

  • Sheryl Vance

Jonathan, where do u buy the Earthborn food. I’ll try anything to find a food that she’ll eat. I want her to have something that’s nutritional.

  • Sheryl Vance

Thanks Mike. I’ve tried topping with several different can foods and she won’t touch it. Just bought a can of Innova, a can of Wellness, and a can of Blue. She wouldn’t touch any of them…mixed with dry or not. She’s the pickiest little dog I’ve ever seen. She won’t eat anything that resembles a milkbone dog biscuit…doesn’t matter the brand. If it’s hard and dry, she doesn’t want it. It’s a stretch to get her to eat the Freshpet Select Rolls. I’m lucky if I can get her to eat 1/4 lb a day…and that’s not much.

  • Janice

My Mini Schnauzer loves fresh pet dog food

  • Mike P

Sheryl , maybe try the topping method with your dry . Make sure you mix it up and cover all the kibble , so your dog doesn’t cherry pick the food . Your dog will love you for the topping of a tastey can …I use 5 or 6 different brands of canned toppers and my gal eats up every meal …just a thought

  • Suzy

My dogs love the Freshpet select rolls. My pug has put on some weight & my vet suggests feeding some dry with it. My dogs love it. A little too much! Watch their weight when you feed it. If you have a picky eater Freshpet is great & pretty high quality too. I now feed dry Blue dog food with the Freshpet & a little warm water – let it sit about 5 minutes & mash it with a potato masher. It’s the best of both.

  • Jonathan

Have you tried Earthborn Primitive Natural? My dog thinks that stuff is candy.

  • Sheryl Vance

Thanks Jonathan and Mike! I’ll try to be patient. My little dog is the pickiest dog on the planet. She hates dry food…at least all the ones I’ve tried to get her to eat. Do you know of one that is extra tasty to dogs? I’d love to get her on a dry one, but hate going through the starvation thing.

  • http://DogFoodAdvisor.com Mike Sagman

Hi Sheryl… There are still hundreds of dog foods waiting to be reviewed. So, unfortunately, it could be a while longer before I get to this product line. Thanks for the reminder.

  • Jonathan

Sheryl, Freshpet Select Slice and Serve looks like a fine product! Here is the ingredients…

Chicken, eggs, chicken liver, chicken broth, carrots, brown rice, peas, rice bran, carrageenan, salt, natural flavors, Choline chloride, vitamin E supplement, niacin, biotin, riboflavin supplement, manganous oxide, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin B12 supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, Calcium carbonate, zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, copper proteinate, copper sulfate, niacin, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, thiamine mononitrate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

And the GA (dry matter basis) looks like this…

    Protein-37%
    Fat-22%
    Carb- approx 34% (fiber 7%)

Looks like a 4.5-5 star food to me! :-)

  • Sheryl Vance

I’m waiting for the reviews on the Freshpet Select food rolls, too. Have you made any progress with their evaluation?

Hi TW… They’re on my To Do list. But due to our current backlog, it could be a while before I get to the Freshpet Select Rolls.

  • TW

Looking forward to see the reviews for the rolls.

  • michelle

I meant the Freshpet foods! regarding the above

  • michelle

    Hi Mike,

I am currently a big fan of wellness both the stew variety and the sliced roll. My 5 year old Shih-tzu is extremely fussy and she is pretty sensitive to most foods causing digestive upset. I give her Freshpet foods 3-4 times a week in combination with her regular hard food which she tends to just leave in the bowl. I love this food…so does she. I love your site! Keep up the great work! You make our lives a bit easier!- mln

    Carol,
So sorry to hear about the dogs you knew that got sick. :-/ Hope everything turned out okay.
Regarding black listing any companies that have ever had a recall though, you’d be left with slim pickings. Especially considering that many of the companies share manufacturing facilities. For example, Solid Gold Dry dog foods are made at the Diamond Pet Foods processing plant. Its unfortunate that even the ‘best’ dog food companies sometimes have issues.
I’m right there with you on the P&G buy out of Natura though. I will continue to sell and promote California Natural, EVO and the rest of the Natura line for now, but if the formulas are changed so that they drop below the 3 star rating, I will steer clear of them.

  • Carol

Kristin, only because of the recall wayback – I knew two dogs personally that got very sick. It was hard to get over. I’m sure Diamond is fantastic now and of course recall can happen to any brand. It’s just a personal thing – It’s the same kind of thing that some brands have or will be taken over by P&G and there is a possibility that formulas will be changed. It’s just my feelings…

  • http://dogoninn.com Kristin

    Carol,
If you don’t mind my asking, what’s the reasoning behind your strong aversion to ‘anything to do with Diamond’? Granted, not all of their products are fantastic, but many are rated 4 or even 5 stars on here.

  • Carol

For instance the Fresh Pet Select the deli loaf -
It says Crude Protein (min) 10.0% and The Crude fat (min) 6.0% – When I spoke to the Company they said that I need to convert this because this is way to high. Is she talking dry matter- convert this as if I was using dry food? Because the average layperson at first glance would think wow this is great for (pancreatitis) but no it is way too high. (Premium Edge) no…no…anything to do with Diamond…no…

  • http://DogFoodAdvisor.com Mike Sagman

Hi Carol… We do plan to publish a future list of recommended low fat dog foods. For example, you may wish to consider Wellness Core Reduced Fat or Premium Edge Healthy Weight I (not the Healthy Weight II recipe). Hope this helps for now.

  • Carol

oops…realized it is too high…..didn’t figure it out right…

  • Carol

I saw today in our grocery store, FreshPet Select the chicken bites which have 10% fat and the Deli Style (not sure of the fat content there) might be possible for a low fat snack or as a little topper to her (low fat food) I wouldn’t use this as her main food – Any thoughts on this brand (bites and loaf)

I hope that you will do a review on the low fat foods for dogs that have pancreatitis (attack)

Speaking to many dog owners with this problem, we all feel guilty that we can’t give our dogs the “best” commercial food and there is no magic formula to pick from. Perhaps mixing and matching might be an idea.

It would have been ideal to have a “Orijen” type of food that would be great for our type of situation; maybe there will be more special needs high quality foods one day:)

  • http://DogFoodAdvisor.com Mike Sagman

Hi Liz… Deli Fresh (and to a lesser degree, Freshpet Select) and Merrick are two of the better dog foods in our database. However, since each dog responds to a particular food in its own way, we’re can’t promise you they will be acceptable to your pet. In any case, I don’t see how you could go wrong with your choices here. Your pit mix is lucky to have you.

  • Liz

    Hi Mike!
I’ve been going through your website and I must say, my head is about to explode! :) Choosing a decent dog food is almost a part time job! Right now my 1 yo pit mix Brian is on Canidae CHicken and Rice dry and Science Diet canned. Obviously since reading the rating on SD, I want to take her off. She can take or leave the Canidae. Poor pup itches alot.
I was thinking about switching her to either Deli Fresh slice or Merrick’s Crazy Granny’s Singing Cowboy Chicken and Sausage Tot Pot Pie canned to mix with either Canidae Grain free or Merrick’s Wildnerness Blend. (who names this stuff?)Do you think that’s an ok choice? I’d be interested to see what you think of the Freshpet rolls since they’re so readily available. Thank you for all your hard work and for sharing your knowledge with us dog parents! You made my life easier but I still think my head might pop from all this info!! :)

  • http://DogFoodAdvisor.com Mike Sagman

Hi Marie… Haven’t yet reviewed the Freshpet rolls. Will get to them in the future. Glad you like the Orijen.

  • Marie

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for the info, it helps. I bought him the slice and serve roll to add to his kibbles, Wellness Puppy, which he does not like. So, does the “slice and serve rolls” get the same rating (3) as the Homestyle?

After reading the ratings for all dog food, I decided to buy the Orijen last night which I am now mixing with the Wellness Puppy kibbles. Milo, my puppy beagle, likes it very much in contrast to the Wellness which he does not want to eat unless he’s really hungry. This morning, he’s been picking on his food, selecting the Orijen kibbles and leaving out the Wellness in the food bowl, but judging from the way he eats due to Orijen, some Wellness are getting into his mouth with the Orijen, which is good since the 15 lb package of Wellness is newly opened, too. I’m happy that he likes the Orijen.

Have a nice week-end and thank you.

  • http://DogFoodAdvisor.com Mike Sagman

Hi Marie… There are three lines of FreshPet (Homestyle, Fresh Bites and Slice and Serve Rolls). All of them should be refrigerated as they are all made without preservatives. Once opened, they can keep fresh in the fridge for 2 days (Homestyle), Fresh Bites (4 days) and the Slice and Serve Rolls (7 days). Hope this helps.

  • Marie

    Hi Mike,

I did not see the review and rating for FreshPet Select refrigerated food. My 8 month-old beagle love it. I feed him with Wellness Super 5 Mix for puppy and he doesn’t like it, he would only eat it when really hungry at night or early morning if he wouldn’t eat it for dinner. I switched to Nutro (slowly by mixing the 2 brands) and he liked Nutro but his poop was a lot more and mostly soft, so I switched back again to Wellness and again he woudn’t eat it unless he starved himself for the day. In between I gave him greenies and high quality treats made with high-protein (sparingly). When I bought the FreshPet refrigerated and diced and mixed it with Wellness, he would pick on FreshPet and scatters the kibbles all over the floor. He would eventually eat the kibbles thru late in the night when he knew that no more FreshPet is going to his food bowl. I searched for the review/rating for FreshPet Select refrigerated but I did not see it here; is the review for the canned applicable to the refrigerated variety?

    Thank you.
