Eukanuba Breed Specific (Dry)

Share

Rating: ★★★☆☆

The Eukanuba Breed Specific group of products earns the Advisor’s mid-tier rating of 3 stars.

The Eukanuba Breed Specific product line includes eight kibbles, each claimed to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles for adult maintenance.

The first few ingredients in all the products reveal at least some varying sequence of the same four basic components

  • Chicken by-products meal
  • Chicken meat
  • Corn meal
  • Sorghum

Chicken is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin… derived from the parts or whole carcasses of chicken”.1

Chicken by-product meal is a dry rendered product of slaughterhouse waste. It’s made from what’s left of a slaughtered chicken after all the prime cuts have been removed.

Corn meal is a coarsely ground flour made from dried corn. Corn is an inexpensive and controversial cereal grain of only modest nutritional value to a dog.

Sorghum is a starchy cereal grain with a nutrient profile similar to corn.

The Bottom Line
Eukanuba Breed Specific Dog Foods

For the group, protein averaged about 28% with fat content at just north of 14%. These figures suggest an overall carbohydrate content of 50% for the full product line.

Average protein. Below-average fat. And above-average carbs when compared to a typical dry dog food.

Bottom line?

Eukanuba Breed Specific dog foods are grain-based kibbles using a fair amount of chicken or chicken by-products meals as their main sources of animal protein, thus earning the line three stars.

Recommended.

Hi Daisy May… From what I can tell, this recall did not appear to include the Eukanuba Yorkshire Terrier Specific Breed product. The recall action was voluntary and appears to be related to possible contamination with Salmonella bacteria. For complete details, be sure to read my report about the Eukanuba dog food recall which occurred on or about July 30, 2010. If you’d like to confirm this information, try contacting Eukanuba Customer Service at 877-340-8823. Hope this helps.

It should be back in stores now… it’s back in my store, anyways. Iams/Eukanuba had some sort of salmonella contamination at a plant and had to shut it down to clean it, thus halting production on several of their lines for the last month or so.

I have been using Eukanuba Yorkshire Terrior Breed Specific Dry Dog Food for my dog for a few years, but haven’t been able to find it for a while, and have been advised it has been recalled. Need some information, as to why it was recalled?

Hi Frankie… That is a good question. However, although these ingredients are common allergens to some, most dogs are fine with corn, wheat or soy (even pork products). In the case of grains, I’ve always been more critical of the “grade” of grains used by pet food manufacturers to make dog food than the specific grains themselves.

For a different “angle” on this issue, you may want to check out my article, “Dangerous Canine Diseases Linked to Grains in Dog Food“. Hope this helps.

    Hello, Mike.

What I have learned from having 2 adult male boxers is that corn, soy, or wheat based dog food, or ANY form of pork(bacon, sausage, or chops/bones) gives my dogs terrible gas, watery stools, and occassional vomiting and sluggishness.

I have learned that dogs have food allergies, and this is one reason for the above mentioned.

Why would dog food manufactures put this in dog food when this is NO secret?

Hi Cheryl… Unfortunately, none of the Eukanuba Breed Specific formulas appears to contain chelated minerals. :(
