MemberYes sometimes my toppers are canned food, or meat, or from the Honest Kitchen line, just depends. I don’t use them for every meal. But when I said she loves the Canine Caviar I meant she eats it right up without any toppers. Her stools on Canine Caviar are always great. They are harder on Meadowfeast. I know it is always tricky to find the food that works. Good Luck to you.

MemberGSDMommy89,
I also have a GSD, she is just over a year old. I also feed her Earthborne, and use Meadowfeast. She really likes that one, but towards the end of the bag, she isn’t as excited about it as she is at the beginning. I do rotate her foods and use toppers for some meals and meaty bones a few times a week. The one brand of dry food she seems to always like is, Canine Caviar, Open Sky, or Wilderness. She will follow me in when I bring in the new bag and sniffs the bag like crazy and bugs me until I open it, then she sticks her head in and tries to eat from the bag. It is much more expensive and you have to feed less of it since it is higher calories, I think, but she loves it. So you might try that brand in your rotation. I hope this helps. I’ve gotten so much help from everyone here in the past, I hope this little bit of info helps you as well. Take care.

MemberHi Mercman,
I do not see the Kirkland Dog food you mentioned on HDM ‘s Large Breed Dog Food List. I looked up Kirkland’s Signature Sweet Potato dry dog food on DFA list in general and found, Kirkland Signature Nature’s Domain Salmon and Sweet Potato dry dog food, but it only had 3.5 stars and I think the foods on HDM’s list must be 4 stars or higher. Not sure if that is the one you were referencing or not.
I am currently looking through the list for rotation foods and didn’t remember seeing a Kirkland brand on the list. I am new to all of this so I may be In error. I know how easy it is to mix up information read here just because the site is so full of wonderful information, it is hard for me to keep things straight sometimes. I just suggest you double check that the Kirkland food meets the calcium levels needed for large breeds. I tried to find it on the Costco site but it isn’t listed.
I hope this helps.

MemberMfulton7, and Pattyvaughn,
Oh I am so glad I was able to help someone else for a change! : )
Thank you Patty, once again! This does seem easier to calculate than the calcium you explained earlier. : ) I’ll give it a try. I have been adding some meat of the same protein, and cooked green beans, to Abbey’s meals and she LOVE’S it!

MemberPattyvaughn,
Thank you so much for letting me know the protein was based on the dry matter rather than the guaranteed analysis. I went back to the websites but not all of them show the dry matter information. I hate to ask, but can you tell me the formula to determine that result? You did such a good job on the calcium calculation! : ) Seriously, I love the detail you share! You are extremely helpful to everyone! Especially since I am new to this site this last week, I’ve had several questions. You have been very patient and helped me sort through all this information. Thank you so much! It is so much to take in, But I am trying.
Mfulton,
I think you may be talking about the list of “pea-free” food that was on another thread, “Dog Food Ingredients”, under the question, “Anyone’s dog allergic to Peas?”. I happened to be reading that one too so I’ve copied it here for you. I hope this is what you were looking for.

Grandma Lucy’s and The Honest Kitchen have some pea free foods. Also Great Life grain free/Pioneer Naturals. Here’s some pea free foods I had written down last year. I’m not sure if they’re still pea free:
Timberwolf
TOTW Pacific Stream (canola)
EVO red meats
EVO turkey & chicken
Pinnacle Peak (quinoa)
Grandma Lucy’s Pureformance
Natures Logic – millet, no potato
Great Life
Canine Caviar

MemberRescueDaneMom,
Thank you for your response explaining that the list does not take percent of protein into account. I will keep that in mind as I look through the list and be sure to check out the protein levels as well.
I am just learning all of this and am trying to get it right. I know everyone here has been at this so much longer, and I appreciate the guidance and support. Thank you to everyone for all your help. Information is empowering!

MemberPattyvaughn,
Then I am confused. Why was Earthborn Meadow Feast recommended, it is 26% protein?Along with NV Instinct, Turkey, and Rabbit LID, these are all under 30%. Several of the ones on the large breed list are under 30% protein. What am I missing?

MemberHi all, I am still trying to get information on the protein levels for large breed dogs. I have a 15 month old GSD who is eating Earthborn Meadow Feast to help with skin issues and so far so good. I want to understand the right range for large breed protein levels as I look for foods to rotate in. I would love it if I could get some feedback on this.
Thank you so much for your help.

MemberI have a question about the protein levels in the foods on the list for large breed dogs. I read that higher protein levels are better, but am not sure of the minimums.
A few days ago I wrote in about my 15 month old German Shepherd, Abbey, having an itching problem. I loved all my responses and have been happy with the Earthborn Meadow Feast choice I made for her and so is she. Most of her itching and gone away in the last week. I think it is because this is chicken free, grain free and potato free food. i tried to cover my bases to get a quick fix for her and it seems to be working so far. I also want to rotate her diet, something I never knew until I started reading all the wonderful postings here on DFA. This makes total sense to me and I think this may be part of the reason Abbey got her problems from eating only one food for the last year, Wellness Large Breed Puppy.
As I have looked through the foods on the list the next food I plan to rotate in is, Instinct, either Rabbit or Turkey LID. The Rabbit has 27% protein and the Turkey has 29% protein. The Earthborn Meadow Feast is only 26% protein. After reading in several threads that higher protein is better I wanted to better understand what those, protein levels should be. I want to select a food that is on both the large breed list and the no chicken, no grain and no potato list as well, since she has done so well with the Earthborn Meadow Feast.
I know there is much involved in determining which foods are better for a large breed, which is why I am ever so, grateful that HDM took an incredible amount of time, I am sure, to create this list in the first place. Now I just need to know how to make a selection from this list that best suits Abbey’s sensitivities. Do I need to worry about these lower protein levels?
