    Hi Jon,

I am the one that Marie was mentioning. I ordered 50# to try out. My dogs a 90# GSD and 50# Cattle dog mix did very well on it. Marie mentioned to me about the fat, which that got by me when I placed my order. GSD’s can have pancreatic issues and higher fats can cause these issues. I was going to keep it in my rotation but it is a chance that I wasn’t willing to take.

I make my own most of the time using Hare-today or My Pet Carnivore for my meats. I may add Darwins back in as they have lower fat and are a very good company.

    Thanks HDM!

I will try that I think. I have PT three nights a week right now, so it is hard having to make after being physically exhausted… ๐Ÿ™‚

I am going to introduce the poultry meal next, using turkey instead as Dante doesn’t do chicken well. :)will see how that goes.

I also finally found a butcher, so now that should help the cost somewhat I am hoping. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi HDM,

My boys are doing very well on the recipe.

If it would make say a bigger batch over the weekend and freeze and thaw as needed, that would affect the food would it?

They loved it and no stomach issues, which is awesome!

I used 2 pound pork and a pound of beef with tripe. I think I put too much yogurt in it, so I’ll pay close attention to it next time.

Thanks so much for your help!!!

Absolutely! I ordered the minerals today. So once they arrive I will try my hand at making food. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hello HDM,

I am exited to try my hand at making my own. The minerals may be a few days out by the time that they ship, so for now it will be the spiru green.

Your exactly right, my own vet said she has seen lots of sick animals doesn’t recommend it, but here try a Royal Canin vegetarian diet for Dante… :(. We agree to disagree on nutrition. I have learned through trial and error, mostly error LOL, that dark meat chicken and potato are the big no no’s for him. He does very well on duck, pork, bison, and rabbit. So even if I did this for one meal a day then a meal of 6 fish both my boys and my wallet can start to be happy with each other ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ll be nervous the first few times, I’m sure ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thanks HDM,

So do you prepare food for a week in advance? I see that you recipie is one meal, so by that, I would get two days from a batch then.

I am nervous about this, but the benefits of 100% raw are to great to ignore. Since kibble teeth don’t look as nice, larger stool volume…great coats though. :). The new Orijen does work well for them.

Thanks for the info on the supplements, I have been doing a little shopping. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi HDM,

Question on the mineral supplements. What do you do to store it? How long does the mixture last?

    Hi Aimee,

    “They” is the AKC.

That’s what I mean, how often does the animal get tested? And as you said, they are reflective of the day of the test. It smells fishy to me, because of that.

Maybe it does, I feel that the AVMA is doing the anti raw at the request of the companies that many of them prescribe.

The homeopathic battle can be linked to traditional vets taking a hit as owners are waking up to issues stemming from over vaccinating. Alternative therapies to help our pets, saying no to flea and heartworm prevention, which causes more harm to the dog then a flea bite will.

I think they are doing this not for “health” as they claim, but to keep their group in money. Ultimately, who benefits from this? The vets. And what concerns me it it the close minded ones that benefit the most. My traditional vet doesn’t want to hear about the benefits of raw, never mind that my four year olds teeth look like a two year old, pearly white. No body odor, smaller stool volumes, etc. am I to lie and say kibble all the time to avoid the lecture?

    Hi Aimee,

Like I said, I have never had to show my dogs medical records to show BUT I have to to enter training classes. The AKC rules are out of date in that respect.

My concern is that they maybe won’t accept exemptions, and I would be able to participate with Dante.

The “judicious” use of vaccines can be pretty vague. I have dealt with three vets in my area and not one even agrees with a vaccine protocol. How often would they want these tests performed? Kinda sounds like revenue raising to me…admittedly I am jaded by this organization.

I don’t like the AVMA using their influence to the levels that they are: raw feeding, homeopathic medications, currently being debated, and then telling a private organization what they “should” require.

    Hi Weimlove,

I am two hours from Hare today’s farm, so shipping is cheap. I may even start going there and picking up.

As for tripe, your butcher should be able to save you some stomachs, cut, grind (if you wish) bag and freeze. ๐Ÿ™‚

My friend and I make tripe every three months. We get ten stomachs, hearts lungs and spleens and grind the mixture together, we get about 100 pounds each, and the price is about 1.00 a pound, can’t be beat!

    Hi Melissa,

I am concerned that they don’t mention titering or exemptions. I know when I register for shows vaccines or health records NEVER come up.

I did misread the heartworm/parasites stance.

But how can a private organization feel that they can tell a club what they should allow? Who drives the AVMA?

First they frown upon raw foods, now they are going after homeopathic practices, where do they stop? I doubt that their motives are 100% pure. Their vets would gain an influx of business by having vets do all of these tests, and most are probably not necessary.

I have been skeptical of this organization for sometime, and even more so recently.

    Hi Melissa,

Here is the link. This is the proposed topics for a meeting with the AKC and what they plan to accomplish: https://www.avma.org/KB/Policies/Pages/American-Kennel-Club.aspx

While I agree with what you are saying about Uncle Skeeters dog…

My 5000.00 show dog may no longer be eligible as he will be exempt from vaccines. He is battling vaccinosis right now, after a Lepto and Lyme vaccines were administered without my consent, while he was in the back being titered. So does that mean no more Rally and obedience for my dogs? How is that fair? Considering there is a lot of research about all of the over vaccinating of our pets?

This is awful. And I am seeking an exemption for Dante, as he is dealing with vaccinosis. So, if they pass this, Dante would be in eligible. ๐Ÿ™

    Hi Dr. Mike,

I would be more inclined to call them dry. Having the moisture removed to me qualifies them as dry. I would even go so far to say that they aren’t even truly raw foods as they have been processed.

I guess if we keep analyzing, then where does that leave the HPP processed foods, Natures variety and Primal. I know not all of Primal’s are HPP, but that would be an additional process done to the food.

Raw frozen, by that are you meaning Darwin’s and Bravo, etc? I would say they are raw products, they retain their moisture, and aren’t exposed to heat. They would retain their optimal nutrition.

Maybe rate these foods separate from each other? A category for freeze dried, dehydrated, etc.

Given that these are all processed to some extent, are they truly raw? I know it’s splitting hairs, but Darwin’s adds vegetables, so that would be a process. Bravo and Primal also add them to certain lines. I guess, the bottom line is what the “accepted” definition of raw is. For me, it would be the moisture rich foods with the barest amount of processing.

    Hi Dowsky,

I think they are ok. I have used them before. But the store I get them from has them priced pretty high in my opinion and compared to the other suppliers I use.

Lol! HDM sounds like he could race your Mabel! Booker gets half the amount that Dante does and is fed first since he is the oldest, and Dante’s food disappears before the bowl is in the stand…all of this while Booker is STILL eating…. ๐Ÿ™‚

Do you just sit the portion pacer on top of the meal or do you bury it in? Maybe I am not using it right?

Dante has removed it from the bowl and then carried around like a toy…

I think then I will give MPC a try and order some grinds and see if I can do a prey animal….if I do that they should fast for 24 hours right?

    Thanks again! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thanks again, HDM!

Work is hectic, so I don’t get much time for the site during the day. ๐Ÿ™

I offer RMB’s about three times a week as “snacks” . I wish I had a before picture of Bookers teeth, they are now sparkling white! You can’t tell he is four! ๐Ÿ™‚

Would you be inclined to say that the chunks may not be as well balanced as the grinds? I wanted to get them closer to prey, I don’t know if I could do a full prey animal. So I was thinking the chunks would allow them to crunch and tear, etc.

I also wonder if the chunks could slow Dante down a little bit, he inhales, even with a pacer ball….

    Hi HDM,

In your opinion, am I better going with the grinds the chunks? My thought is that chunks would be closer to prey.

    Thanks

    Hi HDM,

That is a great menu! I am still feeling my way through this process, so here is what I have:

I feed the Darwin’s naturals for one meal, a different protein everyday. Dante eats a pound per meal and Booker eats 1/2 a pound per meal.

The other meal is a a change up between various hare today grinds, Llama, Goat, Duck, Turkey, Beef, and very occasionally Chicken. Booker can’t tolerate Chicken for two many meals in a row.

With the grinds, they get eggs twice a week, one tbs of coconut oil every other day. Fish oil on the opposite days.

I add minced garlic two times a week.

A tbs of organic Oikos yogurt three times a week.

I was adding Tumeric, but it seems to set off Dante, he gets inflamed from it.

I am going to order some of the Mercola Super Green for the whole food supplement.

    How balanced am I?

Ordering chunks from my pet carnivore this weekend instead of the grinds.

I think it is the best way to feed out pets. No filler and everything they need for a species appropriate diet.
