How about Wellness Core? It’s in-between Orijen and Acana in terms of protein content I believe. We’re currently switching our Vizsla puppy to Orijen from Wellness Core because I want an even higher protein content since she’ll be joining me on regular long-distance runs as she gets older–and based on the feeding schedule, Orijen actually ends up being slightly cheaper than Wellness Core over the long run.

Nevertheless, our girl had no problems with Wellness Core and, but for Orijen being a step up in protein/ingredients, we’d stick with the brand.

As a follow-up to my initial post, I opted to transition our new little girl to Wellness Core Puppy. I’d attempted to contact Pro Pac (Midwestern Pet Foods) about the source of their ingredients and still haven’t heard back. With Wellness, I know where the meats are sourced and I have greater confidence in their transparency than with Pro Pac.

Upon some additional research, I discovered Pro Pac is marketed largely to independent retailers as a product akin to other mainstream natural dog foods but that allows for greater profit margin for those retailers . . . marketability and sales information seemed more readily available than information touting it’s nutritional strength.

Suzanne S: we just brought home a new puppy and she’s been on Pro Pac Ultimates Puppy. I posted a question about possibly switching to grain-free (as I’d done with our dearly departed old girl) and am still waiting on a response.

Though I’m looking to switch, Pro Pac Ultimates Puppy is rated 5 starts, though not Editor’s Choice, and does contain grain in the form of brown rice, white rice, and rice bran. It’s wheat, corn, and soy free though, and appears to be a good quality dog food otherwise. We’ve not had any issues with the food in the few days we’ve had our girl, it’s just not available in any stores locally which gives me pause and I’m also more used to grain-free options given our past experience.

You can order the product on Chewy or Amazon and you may be lucky to have a distributor in your area (I think it’s often sold through Veterinary offices). There are other highly rated non-grain free options as well, I think the basic Wellness and Merrick formulas likewise include rice.

    Hope this helps!
