Oh, I wouldn’t call them shady- they are much better than lots of others out there. Their food doesn’t agree with my dog, but I won’t hold that against them. She doesn’t like Merrick either, and both companies have very good ingredient lists on their products.
As far as customer service goes, I don’t think there isn’t a dog food company out there that doesn’t get half a dozen, “You killed my dog!” calls a day. That would tend to make for a rather defensive customer service attitude.
