Ingredients Analysis

The first ingredient in this dog food is chicken. Chicken is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin… derived from the parts or whole carcasses of chicken”.1

Chicken is naturally rich in the 10 essential amino acids required by a dog to sustain life.

The second ingredient is chicken broth. Broths are of only modest nutritional value. Yet because they add both flavor and moisture to a dog food, they are a common addition component in many canned products.

The next ingredient is water, which adds nothing but moisture to this food. Water is a routine finding in most canned dog foods.

The fourth ingredient in this dog food is turkey. Turkey is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin… derived from the parts or whole carcasses of turkey”.2

Turkey is naturally rich in the 10 essential amino acids required by a dog to sustain life.

The fifth ingredient is carrots. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, minerals and dietary fiber.

Next, we find green beans, a healthy vegetable notable for its vitamin, mineral and natural fiber content.

The seventh ingredient is potato starch. Potato starch is a gluten-free carbohydrate used more for its thickening properties than its nutritional value.

The eighth ingredient is chicken liver. This is an organ meat sourced from a named animal and thus considered a beneficial component.

The ninth ingredient lists eggs. Eggs are easy to digest and have an exceptionally high biological value.

From here, the list goes on to include a number of other items.

But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of this Wellness product.

With one notable exception

First, this food contains chelated minerals, minerals that have been chemically attached to protein. This makes them easier to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better dog foods.

Nutrient Analysis

Based on its ingredients alone, Wellness Complete Health Petite Entrees Shredded Medley Chicken & Turkey looks like an average wet product.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 41.4%, a fat level of 42.8% and estimated carbohydrates of about 7.7%.

As a group, the brand features an average protein content of 40% and a mean fat level of 45.2%. Together, these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 7.4% for the overall product line.

And a fat-to-protein ratio of about 113%.

Which means this Wellness product contains…

Below-average protein. Above-average fat. And below-average carbs when compared to a typical wet dog food.

Our Rating of Wellness Complete Health Petite Entrées Grain Free Shredded Medley Cups Dog Food

Wellness Petite Entrees Shredded Medley is a grain-free wet dog food using a notable amount of named meats as its dominant source of animal protein.

It is worth noting that the lower ratings in this range are due to the high fat-to-protein ratio. With lower fat content, all of these recipes would have been rated higher. We highly recommend these recipes for working or highly active dogs. If you give this particular formula to pets and less active dogs, we recommend you monitor their weight regularly to ensure they remain their ideal size.
