Ingredients Analysis

The first ingredient is chicken. Chicken is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin… derived from the parts or whole carcasses of chicken”.1

Chicken is naturally rich in the 10 essential amino acids required by a dog to sustain life.

The following two ingredients are dried egg whites and whole eggs. Eggs are highly digestible and an excellent source of usable protein.

The third ingredient is pumpkin. Pumpkin is a nutritious addition high in complex carbohydrates, beta-carotene and dietary fiber.

The fourth ingredient is tapioca starch, a gluten-free, starchy carbohydrate extract made from the root of the cassava plant.

The fifth ingredient, tocopherols, is a form of vitamin E that is often included in pet foods and pet food ingredients as an antioxidant. The usual form used for this is Mixed Tocopherols. Antioxidants are important to protect the food from oxidation. Oils and fats, and especially polyunsaturated fats such as omega-3 and 6, are particularly predisposed to oxidation. This results in the oils and fats becoming rancid. Not only is rancid food unappealing, but it also poses negative health implications for dogs and cats. Antioxidants are a crucial aspect of creating safe pet food, and we view Tocopherols as a far preferable solution than artificial antioxidants such as BHA and BHT.

We see Tocopherols as a positive addition to this food.

The sixth ingredient is chicken fat. Chicken fat is obtained from rendering chicken, a process similar to making soup in which the fat itself is skimmed from the surface of the liquid.

Chicken fat is high in linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid essential for life. Although it doesn’t sound very appetizing, chicken fat is actually a quality ingredient.

The seventh ingredient is choline chloride, an essential B vitamin that naturally occurs in both plants and animals. It is found in meat, eggs, fish, liver, soybeans and wheat germ.

Because a dog cannot store choline chloride in its body, the nutrient must be replenished to avoid a deficiency. Choline chloride is a supplement required by both AAFCO and the FDA.

From here, the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.

Nutrient Analysis

Based on its ingredients alone, Weruva Freeze-Dried Feeling Farmy looks like an above-average freeze-dried product.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 54.9%, a fat level of 25% and an estimated carbohydrate level of 11.3%.

As a group, the brand features a protein content of 56.7% and a mean fat level of 20.3%. Together, these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 14.2% for the overall product line, alongside a fat-to-protein ratio of 40%.

This means this Weruva product range contains above-average protein, below-average carbohydrate, and below-average fat, when compared to typical freeze-dried dog food.
