Ingredients Analysis

The first ingredient is pork heart. Although it doesn’t sound very appetizing, heart tissue is pure muscle – all meat.  It’s naturally rich in quality protein, minerals and complex B vitamins, too.

The second ingredient is pork. Pork can be defined as “the clean flesh derived from slaughtered pork” and includes skeletal muscle or the muscle tissues of the tongue, diaphragm, heart or esophagus.1

Pork is naturally rich in all 10 essential amino acids required by a dog to sustain life.

The third ingredient is pork liver. This is an organ meat sourced from a named animal and thus considered a beneficial component.

The fourth ingredient is pork bone, an excellent source of natural calcium.

The fifth ingredient is organic collard greens, like kale, are a cruciferous vegetable, rich in many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. A particularly rich source of Vitamins K, C and A, calcium and folate. Phenols, polyphenols and alpha-lipoic acid are the antioxidants delivered. Collard greens are high in fiber and low in calories. Cruciferous vegetables contain glucosinolates, which studies show may reduce the risk of developing some cancers.

The sixth ingredient is organic kelp, an algae-based seaweed modest in protein content but rich in marine minerals.

From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.

This recipe has one notable exception.

Since this recipe contains organic ingredients, we feel compelled to grant this line a more favorable status as we consider its final rating.

That’s because organic ingredients must comply with notably more stringent government standards – standards which significantly restrict the use of any synthetic pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, hormones or antibiotics.

Nutrient Analysis

Based on its ingredients alone, Green Juju Freeze-Dried Raw Pork Recipe looks like an above-average freeze-dried product.

As a group, the brand features a protein content of 52.5% and a mean fat level of 36.5%. Together, these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 4.2% for the overall product line, alongside a fat-to-protein ratio of 72%.

This means this Green Juju product line contains above-average protein, below-average carbohydrate, and above-average fat, when compared to typical freeze-dried dog food.

Our Rating of Green Juju Freeze-Dried Raw Diet Dog Food

The brand is highly focused on organic, locally and sustainably sourced ingredients, and definitely deserves the 5 stars it has received in our review.

It is worth noting that two of the recipes have lower ratings due to a high fat-to-protein ratio. Since the ingredients are of really good quality, they would be ideal for active dogs.
