Ingredients Analysis
The first ingredient is chicken. Chicken is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin… derived from the parts or whole carcasses of chicken”.1
Chicken is naturally rich in the 10 essential amino acids required by a dog to sustain life.
The second ingredient is chicken heart. Although it doesn’t sound very appetizing, heart tissue is pure muscle – all meat. It’s naturally rich in quality protein, minerals and complex B vitamins, too.
The third ingredient is chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans. Like peas, beans and lentils, chickpeas are a nutritious member of the fiber-rich legume (or pulse) family of vegetables.
However, chickpeas contain about 22% protein, a factor that must be considered when judging the actual meat content of this dog food.
The fourth ingredient is sweet potato. Sweet potatoes are a gluten-free source of complex carbohydrates in dog food. They are naturally rich in dietary fiber and beta-carotene.
The fifth ingredient is chicken liver, a product made from whole chicken livers. Because it contains about 62% protein and 20% fat, this item makes a favorable addition to this dog food.
The sixth ingredient is whole oats. Oats are rich in B vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber.
The seventh ingredient is blueberries. Blueberries are a good source of vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber.
The eighth ingredient is spinach. Spinach is rich in vitamins A, K, and C, as well as folate, iron, and magnesium. Spinach is a source of fiber. For dogs predisposed to oxalate stones spinach should be avoided, due to its high oxalate content.
The ninth ingredient is salmon oil. Salmon oil is naturally rich in the prized EPA and DHA type of omega-3 fatty acids.
Depending on its level of freshness and purity, salmon oil should be considered a commendable addition.
From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.
This recipe has three notable exceptions.
First, we find fructooligosaccharides. These are included here as a prebiotic. Prebiotics support the growth of healthy bacteria in the large intestine and deliver digestive health benefits.
We also find yeast culture. Although yeast culture is high in B vitamins and protein, it can also be used as a postbiotic to aid in digestion.
Lastly, we find this food also contains chelated minerals that have been chemically attached to protein. This makes them easier to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better dog foods.
Nutrient Analysis
Based on its ingredients alone, Dash Dog Food Certified Organic Chicken Recipe looks like an above-average fresh product.
The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 33.8%, a fat level of 17.6% and an estimated carbohydrate level of 41.8%.
As a group, the brand features a protein content of 38.2% and a mean fat level of 26.5%. Together, these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 28.5% for the overall product line, alongside a fat-to-protein ratio of 67%.
This means this Dash product range contains below-average protein, above-average carbohydrate, and near-average fat when compared to typical fresh dog food.
