Our Verdict

Rating:

Chi Dog product range consists of five recipes, each receiving the Dog Food Advisor’s rating of 5 stars.

Moisture-rich, gently cooked whole food recipes crafted to support your dog’s overall health, particularly healthy digestion.

We’re sure you’ve noticed that one of these recipes is currently unrated. This is because it’s a vegetarian recipe and our review methodology favors dog foods rich in meat, so judging a plant-based diet against this criteria would always give a low rating. Studies of plant-based diets for dogs have shown positive results, providing preferable options for many dogs with allergies, but it is not something we promote above meat-based diets.

Pros
  • Low in carbohydrates
  • Simple recipes, one protein, one carb, a few vegetables
  • Lean muscle meat only
Cons
  • Not budget-friendly

The table below shows each recipe in this range including our rating and the AAFCO nutrient profile: Growth (puppy), Maintenance (adult), All Life Stages, Supplemental or Unspecified.

Ingredients Analysis

The first ingredient is chicken. Chicken is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin… derived from the parts or whole carcasses of chicken”.1

Chicken is naturally rich in the 10 essential amino acids required by a dog to sustain life.

The second ingredient is whole eggs. Eggs are easy to digest and have an exceptionally high biological value.

The third ingredient is brown rice, a complex carbohydrate that (once cooked) can be fairly easy to digest. However, aside from its natural energy content, rice is of only modest nutritional value to a dog.

The fourth ingredient is eggplant. Eggplant, also known as Aubergine, is a member of the nightshade family, like tomatoes, potatoes and peppers. It is low in calories, and provides fiber which has many functions, from promoting satiety to aiding blood sugar control. The purple pigment in Eggplant is from anthocyanins which have antioxidant properties.

The fifth ingredient is carrots. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, minerals and dietary fiber.

The sixth ingredient is broccoli. Broccoli is a healthy green vegetable and a member of the kale family. It’s notably rich in vitamin C and fiber and numerous other nutrients.

Like other cruciferous vegetables, broccoli is believed to provide anti-cancer benefits.

From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.

This recipe has three notable exceptions.

First, taurine, an important amino acid associated with the healthy function of heart muscle. Although taurine is not typically considered essential in canines, some dogs have been shown to be deficient in this critical nutrient.

We view the presence of taurine in this recipe as a positive addition.

Next, selenium yeast. Unlike the more common inorganic form of selenium (sodium selenite), this natural yeast supplement is considered a safer anti-cancer alternative.

This food also contains chelated minerals that have been chemically attached to protein. This makes them easier to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better dog foods.

Nutrient Analysis

Based on its ingredients alone, Chi Dog Wood Diet looks like an above-average fresh product.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 59.4%, a fat level of 21.9% and an estimated carbohydrate level of 11.3%.

As a group, the brand features a protein content of 50.7% and a mean fat level of 17.7%. Together these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 9.2% for the overall product line, alongside a fat to protein ratio of 36%.

This means this Chi Dog product line contains above-average protein, below-average carbohydrate, below-average fat, when compared to typical fresh dog food.
