Washington, D.C. — On September 24, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an advisory warning pet owners not to feed dogs two specific lots of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products’ BioLogics All‑Natural & Grain‑Free Beef Recipe dog food. The advisory follows laboratory testing that detected Listeria monocytogenes in both lots and Salmonella in one.
Key Findings & FDA Action
- The testing arises from follow‑up on a consumer complaint. In one sample, the FDA found both Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella; in another, only Listeria.
- The two implicated lot numbers are:
- Lot 11895, manufactured July 29, 2025
- Lot 11826, manufactured July 7, 2025
- The product is sold in frozen 2‑pound packages (divided into four half‑pound units) via an online subscription service.
- The FDA has requested that Arrow Reliance, Inc. (the manufacturer) initiate a recall of the two lots. Although the company sent a letter to customers notifying them of Listeria contamination, the FDA states that the letter did not mention Salmonella.
- As of the advisory date, Arrow Reliance had not provided adequate documentation to the FDA confirming the removal of the affected products from the marketplace and from consumers’ freezers.
Guidance for Pet Owners & Public Health Precautions
Owners who possess any of the affected lots are urged to immediately stop feeding the product, dispose of it securely (in a manner inaccessible to other animals), and do not donate it.
All pet supplies, surfaces, utensils, food bowls, storage containers, and areas where the pet had access should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
People handling the food or contaminated surfaces should wash their hands thoroughly.
Health Risks & Symptoms
Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes infections pose risks to both animals and humans, particularly people who are pregnant, elderly, very young, or immunocompromised.
In humans, Salmonella infection may present as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps; in severe cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream.
Listeriosis symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, and loss of balance. For pregnant people, infections may lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or severe disease in newborns.
Dogs are rarely at great risk from Salmonella. They may show vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, loss of appetite, or lethargy — but they may also carry and shed the bacteria without displaying symptoms.
Reporting Pet Food Problems
U.S. citizens can report complaints about FDA-regulated pet food products by calling the consumer complaint coordinator in your area. Or go to the FDA’s “Report a Pet Food Complaint” page.
Canadians can report any health or safety incidents related to the use of this product by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.
