Fresh dog food company The Farmer’s Dog announced it’s investing an extra $10m into funding veterinary research, including clinical trials, residencies and grants.
The funding will be used across a number of universities to aid research into the science of pet nutrition as well as supporting veterinarians.
The investment will aid existing research into subjects including the impact of food on dog hydration, relative supersaturation, and other diet-based pet food subjects.
“The Farmer’s Dog is the answer to the growing consumer preference for less processed foods along with the nutritional expertise and rigor that veterinarians trust,” said Jonathan Regev, co-founder and CEO of five-star rated The Farmer’s Dog.
“Since our founding, we’ve worked alongside veterinarians and veterinary nutritionists to pioneer this new approach to minimally processed pet food. Veterinary research is one of the most impactful ways we can improve pet health and longevity, and we’re excited to further support the experts leading this work.
“We believe this will elevate the role of minimally processed, whole food nutrition in veterinary medicine.”

This funding follows The Farmer’s Dog’s partnerships with other universities, including a long-term feeding trial study by Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and College of Agriculture and Life Studies. The feeding trial involved giving dogs The Farmer’s Dog recipes for three times as long as a normal feeding trial — and a larger participation group — to examine the effect of the diet over a longer period of time.
It was the first study of its kind on fresh or human-grade dog food, and the results backed up the pet food company’s claims regarding the nutritional benefits of The Farmer’s Dog and the fact that it provides a nutritionally complete and balanced diet and is good for feeding dogs daily.
“The support from The Farmer’s Dog allows us to expand our efforts in this critical area of pet health,” said Dr. Huson, Associate Professor at Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. “We look forward to the continued impact of this research on the veterinary community and the pets and pet owners we serve.”
