Dental health is vitally important for dogs; poor dental hygiene can cause serious issues. Bad breath may be unpleasant for pet parents but this can also mask more significant problems such as a build up of plaque and tartar that can in turn lead to gum disease and even tooth loss. It’s common for dogs to experience dental health issues and that risk increases as our pets age – much like us humans, in fact.
So, the responsibility to look after a dog’s teeth is yours, pet parent. Ideally, pet parents should clean their dog’s teeth daily, but you can also get dental health supplements for dogs to support that routine. Cleaning a dog’s teeth isn’t always easy and a supplement provides another form of dental care protection.
Here, we’ve rounded up some of the best dog dental supplements available to buy. As there is no viable way to give a star rating to dog food supplements, we’ve asked Laura Ward, our expert pet nutritionist, to develop criteria that allow us to approve certain products (as we have with our other supplement lists).
“The active ingredients we’re looking for in these supplements are kelp/seaweed, green tea extract, probiotics, cellulose and sodium hexametaphosphate,” explained Laura.
“As with all our approved supplements, they must not contain artificial antioxidants or preservatives, sugar, artificial colours or flavours.”
Please find below our choice of the best dental supplements for dogs and links to buy them if you wish. We’ve focused mostly on powders and gels – you can read our recommendations for best dog dental chews here.
