Ingredients Analysis
The first ingredient is pork heart. Although it doesn’t sound very appetizing, heart tissue is pure muscle — all meat. It’s naturally rich in quality protein, minerals and complex B vitamins, too.
The second two ingredients are pork loins and pork tails. Pork can be defined as “the clean flesh derived from slaughtered pork” and includes skeletal muscle or the muscle tissues of the tongue, diaphragm, heart or esophagus. 1
Pork is naturally rich in all 10 essential amino acids required by a dog to sustain life.
The fourth ingredient is organic green beans, a healthy vegetable notable for its vitamin, mineral and natural fiber content.
The fifth ingredient is pork liver. This is an organ meat sourced from a named animal and is thus considered a beneficial component.
The sixth ingredient is organic apple, a nutrient-rich fruit that’s also high in fiber.
The seventh ingredient is beets, the root portion of a sugar beet plant. As the name implies, beets contain a high concentration of sucrose (sugar).
The eighth ingredient is crimini mushrooms. Crimini mushroom comes from the same species as white and portobello mushrooms. The enzymes and bacteria found in Crimini mushrooms are thought to have beneficial health properties, from supporting immunity and blood pressure control to helping to prevent certain types of cancer. These health advantages have not been studied in dogs.
The ninth ingredient is flaxseed, one of the best plant sources of healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Provided they’ve first been ground into a meal, flax seeds are also rich in soluble fiber.
However, flaxseed contains about 19% protein, a factor that must be considered when judging the actual meat content of this dog food.
From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.
This recipe includes three notable exceptions.
Salmon oil and cod liver oil are both naturally rich in the prized EPA and DHA type of omega-3 fatty acids. These two high-quality fats boast the highest bioavailability to dogs and humans.
Depending on its level of freshness and purity, salmon oil should be considered a commendable addition.
Also, since this recipe contains a number of organic ingredients, we feel compelled to grant this line a more favorable status as we consider its final rating.
That’s because organic ingredients must comply with notably more stringent government standards – standards which significantly restrict the use of any synthetic pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, hormones or antibiotics.
