I would love to see a review on the new fresh dog foods – My Ollie and Pet Plate. Iā€™ve tried both and am currently feeding My Ollie to my three Danes for dinner meals.

Nadine, I feed my three Danes – ages 11 mos, 2 yrs and 13 yrs – Farmina and I couldn’t be happier with it. They are better than a fairly good company, they have an exceptional reputation. I started my pup on the puppy maxi formula and have now transitioned him to the adult grain-free maxi formula. It is expensive, but I’m willing to pay more for the higher quality ingredients. I figure if I’m not willing to eat by-products, why would I feed them to my dogs. At the end of the day, we all have to find the best food for our pups, so I hope you find one that works for you. Good luck.

Tyla, if you think your dog has a food allergy, you should try grain free and avoid chicken as the base protein. I read that most food allergies in dog are stemmed from chicken. The other possibility is that your dog has environmental allergies. My dog has them bad and it started when she was about 6 mos. She is now on Cytopoint injections every 8 weeks and an allergy shot weekly.

As for food. Check out Farmina Puppy Maxi. My local organic pet store recommended it to me and my dogs love it. The puppy is on the lamb formula (they have a chicken and fish one too) and my 2 adult Danes rotate between the adult Maxi flavors. It’s priced about the same as Wellness, which I have also used in the past and it’s great, but my dogs stopped eating it suddenly. I’d also recommend Orijen Puppy Large, but it’s mush more expensive.

    Good luck!

I started my Great Dane pup out on Wellness Core puppy, which is a great food, but then he didn’t like it anymore, so I switched to Orijen Puppy Large, also a really great high quality food. That gave his diarrhea so now we’ve finally settled on Farmina Puppy Max and he loves it and he’s doing fantastic on it. The cost of Farmina is more in line with Wellness, with the same human grade ingredients that you get in Orijen, so my pocketbook is much happier too.

    Good luck with your pup!

Traci T. Congratulations on your new family members, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Economically priced large breed food is harder to find, but other owners of giant breeds (I’m a proud mom of 3 Great Danes) have spoken very highly about the Costco large breed puppy food. The nutrient you most want to monitor is the calcium levels – which should be around 1.1%. Good luck to you and you lucky kids and pups! Jen

Hi Karyn, I have a Great Dane puppy (8 mos now and 110 lbs) and I feed him Orijen Puppy Large kibble combined with Stella and Chewy dehydrated raw as a topper. He loves it and the balance of nutrition is great to manage his growth rate and I love it because it’s very easy to manage (I tried raw and it was too hard with my schedule and their eating habits) and I feel good about the quality and sourcing of ingredients.

This is the hardest issue to get agreement on among owners, so I eventually reviewed the options I was considering with my vet as a final decision factor.

    Good luck! Jenn

First, what a great gathering of other large breed puppy owners – all the great advice is invaluable.

Now on to my questions/ issue. I have a 6 month old Great Dane puppy – Finn is my 4th Dane, one I’ve lost, Shiloh is 13 (a miracle, I know!) and Liberty is 18 months. Until I brought him home I fed all my Danes Wellness Core Large Breed. Then Libby developed allergies so we switched to Wellness Core Wild. And when I brought Finn home I started him on Wellness Core Puppy. Unfortunately he didn’t like it, so after doing a lot of research, I transitioned him to Orijen Puppy Large and my other pups are eating Orijen Regional Red.

Overall, I’m really happy with the food, but Finn’s growth pace has slowed from an average of 5 lbs/week to about 3 lbs/week, which is much sooner than my other pups, and his front paws shake when he’s at rest. The vet checked for growth plate/ligament issues and found nothing of concern.

Has anyone else seen this kind of issue? Has anyone had any issues with Orijen Puppy Large food?

I have a 13 year old Great Dane and an 18-month old GD who has allergies. I feed them Orijen Regional Red which has no chicken and has an exceptional reputation for the quality of their food. It’s expensive, but I’ve found it worthwhile.
