Thank you, Marie P., for your recommendation on NuVet. After going online and reading an impartial review, I decided against using NuVet. Here is a link to the review https://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/nuvet-pet-supplement-snake-oil/

DogFoodie, are you saying that by varying your Cavalier’s daily diet between kibble, canned, fruits and veggies that he is getting the nutrients that he needs? We can certainly do that plus I will not leave good out and pick it up and offer later as Anonymously recommended. BTW, what are ALS foods? Where do you get raw green tripe? I have gotten it canned but he was r thrilled with it. U just wish there was a well balanced food I could feed them and vary between chicken and beef.
Thank you all who replied. I really appreciate your feedback!

We are feeding the Orijin Puppy kibble because we have a one year old also. Both are Coton de Tulears. They aren’t that active except they do run around and play hard in their area which is quite large. We tried feeding him Fromn Gold Adult kibble along with the can food but they completely ignore it. I am afraid I sound like an idiot but I am exasperated as to what to fed them. The two year old has been a finicky eater. So we keep trying to come up with something he will eat. If he doesn’t like it, he will go two days without eating. We have tried: cooking chicken breasts or thighs which the like but I am concerned they are getting the right mix of nutrients (when I add veggies and blueberries, they pick around and just eat the chicken.). We tried balance It Whole Canine menus w/the supplement and they wouldn’t touch it. We tried Basic Instinct t Raw with no luck. Tried Freshpet – they didn’t eat that after an initial meal. They are eating the Evangers canned chicken thighs supplemented with the Orijin Puppy kibble which we leave out all day. The reason we leave the kibble out all day is they often don’t eat the canned food right away. I think we are making feeding them way harder than it should be.

I will definetly follow up with the vet. He is 2 yrs. old and has gained weight. I am wondering if it might be the freeze dried lamb lungs we give as a treat. He loves them and we probably give him more than we should. We have been feeding him 1/2 to 3/4 of a can of Evangers chicken thighs or beef together w/Orijin Puppy kibble. He weighs 18 lbs.
Thank you for your advice DogFoodie!

Bobby Dog, does your dog seem to mind the Carnivore supplement?

Appreciate your reply. We have been using the Canine Plus. I am returning it and believe we will give the Carnivore a try.

LM, I didn’t know rotisserie chicken was loaded with MSG. We aren’t doing that anymore. Oliver is eating Orijen Puppy kibble when he gets hungry. I tried a different flavor of Orijen hoping he would eat more but he isn’t interested. I’ll just keep trying different foods.
Thank you all for your helpful comments! Much appreciated!!

Well – we are in day 3 and Oliver continues to turn his nose up to the kibble. If he doesn’t eat by tonight, I guess I’ll try something else. During these 3 days he has had maybe 2 tablespoons of kibble of which I fed him be hand.

Dori, yes! I would be interested in what brand you are feeding your dogs. I have tried: Raw Instinct-chicken and beef. Primal raw freeze dried chicken, and every natural canned food. Also, Freshpet.

Dori, we started Oliver out on the Orijen kibble and am not sure where we went wrong. He is not a food motivated dog, and that’s probably where we got off on the wrong foot offering him different foods to get him to eat. He doesn’t like to get his whiskers wet so isn’t fond of wet food. But, we are on a new feeding regime now as posted earlier. I’ll let you all know how that works. Your dog is a cutie – is he/she a Coton?

C4D and C4C thanks for your suggestions. FYI, I just ordered the ABC’s of See Spot Live Longer, it is an ebook as well as paperback. It looks like good information and I look forward to receiving it – I opted for the paperback although it is a lot more expensive.

InkedMarie and crazy4cats thank you for your suggestions! First I am going to follow your suggestion InkedMarie. That’s probably the problem. Now he had the runs. So if he doesn’t eat for a day or so it will hopefully help get rid of what is upsetting his system. I’ll let you know if sticking to a specific feeding time for the kibble works.

Thanks so much for the info. I never give him too many but wanted to be sure that the few he does eat are not going to harm him.

I’ll get some goats’ milk. I imagine While Foods would carry it, or maybe Trader Joe’s. Thank you for the tip!!

We have tried that. Also mixing raw ground meat. I just ordered some freeze beef and chicken and have high hopes he will like it. It sure is expensive though.

I have given him freeze dried tripe in treat form. When I fed him Tripett (canned tripe), he wasn’t interested.

I have tried beef, bison, lamb, pork, and chicken. Of all those, he will eat chicken. I know all dogs are different and there is no single answer. But, when I start getting into these forums, the information gets overwhelming.

I am not aware of a dish made from horse hoofs. I give some of the trimmings of the horse’s hoof to my dog as a chew. The trimmings are what’s left after the derriĆØre trims their hooves. As someone responded to my earlier post, only offer them if there if they have not been treated with anything.

Jjennilee – I have a picky eater, too. He is a nine month old Cotton de Tulear. He is point on point with everything you described with your Shelties, right down to liking ice cubes. I can’t tell you how much money we have thrown away in expensive highly rated canned and dry dog food. He does like just about everything we eat. I just purchased 2 Fresh Pet Select in the cooler section (is this the same as you referenced although you called it Pet Fresh?) it is bite size chunks of chicken and one of beef. I have fed him one of each type and he won’t eat it. I did notice Fresh Pet has a tube of something – since you had luck with that perhaps I will try it. I couldn’t figure out who and where it is made which is a huge concern. Also, I have been thinking about making his food. It would be a whole lot easier if I could find something he likes and switch that up with kibble that he does eat from time to time. Who knew feeding a dog could be so involved!

Thanks for sharing the website. Good to know there is a formula to make sense out of the different dog food “analyses” and help to compare oranges to oranges.

    Sandy,
Thank you for clarifying. Is there a formula online that lists the percentages and ratios? I hate to admit it but I am overwhelmed right now and don’t want to think about it much until I get a handle on things. This will sound like an excuse but we are having our master bath redone and were to have had the bedroom painted. It’s week six and the contractor is about 50 percent done. There is no way we will paint the bedroom now. Will postpone that to next spring. I wanted everything finished so that when we bring the puppy home we can focus on him and establish rules and routines. It is totally frustrating because things aren’t where they will be once the remodel job is completed. Sorry to take up space here venting – just had another frustrating go round with the contractor.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, we are picking up a 10 week old Coton puppy on Friday. He is being fed Orijen Puppy dry kibble. I will probably continue to give that to him for a couple of days then switch him to Nature’s Instinct Raw Medallions. By feeding him a commercial product like this, I don’t have to be concerned with percentages of protein, fat, etc. do I?

Thank you Pattyvaughn and pugmomsandy for the tips and your encouragement. I found out the breeder is feeding our pup Origen Puppy kibble along with Grizzly Salmon. I am going to feed Nature’s Instinct Raw frozen medallions alternating with Nature’s Variety Dry kibble Duck and Turkey and maybe throw in a little Nature’s Variety canned food to mix it up. I read somewhere on this website that Nature’s Variety is good for all life stages so ok to feed to a 10 week old puppy.

I am sure that once I become more confidant, I will be looking in to supplementing his natures variety with homemade meals because it will be more cost effective. I will be very interested in what you think of preparing their meals yourself.

I appreciate the tip and will use the medallions. I have great respect and admiration for the people who are preparing their own raw dog food. I just don’t have it in me to do that at this point in life at least not right now.

Your Pugs are adorable! I thank you and appreciate your comments. I made the mistake of going in and reading the comments on supplements – too much information for now! If I feed our puppy Raw Instinct Bites and alternate with an all meat kibble (Fromm perhaps??) and give him a bone every 3 days or so, won’t this be enough for a happy healthy pup? Doesn’t the Raw Instinct and kibble have the right mix of all the nutrients they need?

Also, have you any experience with using Diatamacious Earth as a preventive for ear mites?

Thank you pugdmomsandy for your thoughts. I hope our little guy doesn’t have any gastrointestinal issues. We haven’t had a puppy in a good while. Over the years we have raised many great wonderful dogs (Shepherds and Dobermans) but never a little dog. After reading so much about diets for dogs, it’s a wonder our dogs lived to ripe old ages and never had digestive problems being raised first on Purina Puppy Chow and later on Iames dry kibble. Now after doing some reading and being educated on this forum, I feel so guilty having fed our dogs the same food day in and day out. I feel like a novice dog owner now and am thankful to everyone for sharing their wisdom and making this my number one go-to web site. I have to admit that right now after trying to take everything in, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed but thankful that so much helpful information is available.
