Chip, hello, I am Dixie’s mom. She died May 8 of this year. Her vet also push that crap also. There must be something wrong with it or complaints because they now offer a new and improved SD.! I fed her boiled organic chicken, brown rice, sweet potato’s. If you can find a holistic vet, I would use them. I spent over 8000.00 on my baby in a year trying to save her life. I am disgusted with the way her vet treated her some times, broken tail ( about a year ago) , a hole in her eye( this was 2 days before she died and he said he need her to stay in the hospital , I wanted her home but he promised me he had all the computer stuff to watch her all through the night, then how did she get the hole in the eye ? That was on a Monday night she stayed, I brought her home on Tuesday and took her back on Wednesday and showed them her eye. NO comment they said. She died that afternoon. Go with your gut, Chip. Its your family member even though its a dog. You do what you feel is best, and do the research. Dr. Mike and everyone here will not guide you wrong. We all are in love with our fur babies!

Dixie wore the brand called Zack and Zoey. They fit really well unlike others that were either too tight around the chest or too loose around the neck. I even found her a little black leather jacket!! So cute and very stylish.

Marie, Have you tried using a electric blanket and putting it on low and the ground and put a soft towel down over it so she could feel the warmth? I have one made just for dogs. It only stays on though for 30 minutes and is waterproof. Its really soft out side, it just wont hurt her if she should get it wet, maybe the heat would help her at night. just a thought

She is there finally with all of her other doggie friends. Look at my baby girl! She went by other names as well like Mommy’s Honey Bunny, Funny Face, Miss Feeties, Miss Picky Pouch. I cry still every day for her and sometimes I can almost still feel her on my bed as I have her coats and sweaters and dresses and her purple puppy, hound doggy with me as well as her very first baby bear she was given on the way home from the shelter. When I layed her to rest, she has her own small Bible with a letter I wrote to her. She has her angle bunny that says the lords prayer, and big bag of Natural Balance Cookies, to share with and her squeaky balls, and most of her play animals like the squirrels, chip monks, raccoons, and her long loofa pink doggy. She wore her black sparkly dress with pink velvet trim and pink bow’s. She is laying on 1 of the 2 feather and down pillows that she would lay on when she first got in bed at night, then she would allow me to take the other pillow to use. She has her pink baby blanket so she can share keeping other fur babies warm. She was only a little terrier, born and not knowing who was going to love her and look after her. She was my little terrier and I love her dearly.

I love to read this sight! Where else could you learn so much about dog poop! We are for sure dog lovers to be concerned how often our pets poop! I just thought of something about Cyndi’s dog. She mentioned her dog stays out side some to play… you don’t think he could be ..ah.. eating some of (it) and that’s why he is getting sick? I caught Dixie in my sons cat litter box one time, not my sons litter box but his cats litter box, and she was crunching on something. I had to go brush her teeth! yuck

Hay All, Yes that stuff in food and in cat and dog food makes me gag. I have fibromyalgia and a very long list of food allergies, but my dr said its really not a allergy as much as intolerance. So I go around drinking a lot of distilled water. Dixie was so funny if she wanted a drink of water, if I didn’t bring her bottled water with me we had to stop and get some. My fault, I wanted her to have the best, I thought, then she would sniff the regular water and refuse to drink it. Between her and I we were going through 3-4 cases of deerpark water every month. Even with a filter on my refrigerator water she said, “mom are you trying to poison me “? Ha-ha miss my baby. I would try the tough love as well like Marie said and add a little regular food and slowly back down away from using it. It may just take time. I still have to go return all the canned Natural Balance I have and send back a case of the diabetic food I bought her.

Hay, I’m up most nights, just about all night reading this sight since my baby girl Dixie died May 8th. Nothing is the same any more. I miss her so much. Dixie would do exactly like your dog. I would spend 60.00 on wellness or natural balance and if we went to visit my son who feeds his dogs the kibb…bits…she would try to steal their food and then slide by me thinking I didn’t see her eating that stuff, just like a kid in the cookie jar!!! Sometime I would add boneless boiled organic chicken and carrot sticks or a sweet potato, but they will eat. They wont go hungry. Just like kids. My daughter when she was 6 yrs.’ old(now 34) only wanted oatmeal, breakfast, lunch and dinner. I took her to the Dr. He said don’t worry, she’ll eat, just offer her the different foods and she’ll come around. Well she did and Dixie did too when to my surprise. She would get up at night and I would find her eating her cereal in her bowl, dry food. Yes, she definitely was a girl eating cereal at night!!!

This turns my stomach reading this. Sandy, I ‘m thinking of taking Dixie to a pathologist here in the state of Ala. I know what that means for me and the heart retching ordeal. But I have to know. Will it make me feel any better? or worse? I do not want her Vet to do it. I want a real pathologist who is unbiased. What do you all think? Thanks, Brenda ( its still so hard to go from day to day with out her)

Mom2Cavs, I have been up for several days and nights, can’t sleep without my little fuzz ball next to me. Your fur baby picture is beautiful. I held a support group for fibromyalgia for 2 years and Dixie was the door greater. If she wasn’t feeling well everyone was concerned. I had a lot of offers to baby sit while we held our class. She was more to me then I can even say. She was there for me when no one else was, make since? She could talk her doggy talk, and when she did something naughty, she would sit with head down and look up through her long beautiful eyelashes and I would melt. LOVE OF MY LIFE. When she died a part of me went with her

I was able to put pictures of Dixie on Facebook under my name, Brenda Miller. Still can’t figure out how to do it here. I’m avoiding the day and I know I have to go and get my baby. Can’t stand the thought she won’t be with me any more. I just want to hold her 1 more time and kiss her little nose 1 more time, I want my baby back

Thanks Cyndi, I stay here right now because I know I will have to face the day alone without Dixie. I have cried all night wanting her back next to me. Her Dr. said yesterday to get another one when I’m ready but I too started Dixie out on Kibbles and bits thinking it was good for her until I walked in to petco or pet depot, cant remember now to buy her toy’s, dresses, p.j’s, rain coat, you get the picture, anyway I looked at the dog food and then looked at hers. It was in the garbage that night and I put her on Wellness that night as well. I wonder still if that was the start of her illness, she ate maybe a week of the stuff, then I wonder about the yearly shots the vets say they need. I wonder if we are just making the vets rich and making our babies sick! I want to put Dixie’s picture up but I have to figure out how. Dixie, mommy love’s you my honey bunny

Lullypup, Science Diet as you know is sold at a lot of vets offices because they get payed to sell it and S.D. donates money to vet schools(I have been told) and all you need to do is read the label. I too had a vet for my baby who thought there was nothing better but when I took her to an internist, he said ‘food is what nourishes us and what kind of food we feed our children, pets or ourselves, will determine how well they or we will be. I know you are at the right place to find help. Royal Canin has prescription food, you will need a scrip. to buy it unless you can find a store like a feed store will some times carry it because they have a large cliental who buy pet food from them. I found only 1 near me and it was an hour away. So, maybe besides what you are told here, maybe you might want to go to another vet if yours isn’t willing to offer another brand. I hope your fur baby gets well.

Cyndi, I’m so sorry, I’m so upset myself right now, I didn’t notice this until now and I left you a message on the other page saying I hope Moose lives a long happy life, I’m so sorry. I can’t see straight my self right now. Dixie died in my arms yesterday at the vet, she has something going on with her eye and I ran up there in a panic thinking she got injured over night on Monday when they used the I.V to get meds in her. She went from my rolley polley baby at 18 lb which is only 1 pound over down to 10.2 yesterday and had lost so much muscle she had atrophy all around her face, my poor little baby. She went every where with me. I have a van and she owned the back. She had a pet hospital bed I bought her in November when she was getting weaker and I wanted her safer and comfortable, otherwise she was in her doggy seat belt in her booster seat. I saw the little fur baby saved from the impounded car on the news last night and Dixie looked just like her at 9 months! and I thought I have to go get her and save her, but I know she will have someone love her too I pray as much as I loved my baby. I miss Dixie more then anything as she was my very best friend in the world, I considered her not as a dog but as a child who needed to be loved and cared for as with a human child. Again, Cyndi, So very sorry for your loss even if it was in 2011,it doesn’t make the pain of loosing him go away.

Cyndi, I live in Alabama and I hate it here too. I had a wire haired terrier/schnauzer, Dixie who I adopted when she was 9 months old, passed away yesterday at 4:30. She was only 10. She got a blood transfusion in December and I had the best internist, cardio Dr. and her vet couldn’t save my baby. I have about 12 different prescription’s here she had been on over the yrs.’ for different things up to the end when she was on Flagyl and her Dr. said we need to use i.v.s and not pills due to her stomach is so sensitive. I ordered her Royal Canin diabetic dog food, needs prescription, and she liked it ok but liked the ground round sirloin I bought better, just boiled it first. you might want to have a internist do a biopsy on her to see what is going on for sure. It is very scary as this is your baby we are talking about and not just any dog. I pray that your fur baby gets well and lives a very ,very long happy healthy life. I don’t know how to go on at this time without my baby, as she was my life .

Pugsmom, hi, I bought 4 boxes of the Instint cookies. At 10.00 a box I use 1 as a topper and she gets 1 every 3,4 days as a treat. Dixie could eat the whole box if I let her,but I still watch her stomich issues and she has to be on remidril for 5 days if she starts to throw up or flagel if its her colon.

Patty, do you mean giving a different flavor but same brand?Dixie is on Instints and I give her beef one day then chicken the next, then the organic chicken and veggy from castor and pol. all 5 star. Her stomich is so sinsitive, I have to warm up even her water to baby bottle warm or she throws everything up.

hi, I had the same thing with dixie and she has been so sick i watch every sneeze. I had her on Earthborn then switched her to Instints. I gave her only a lttle dry with her wet food and the licking started so I know for sure there is something in the dry Earthborn.I bought the dry Instints to mix with the can Instints and she was still licking! so I took her off of all dry and she is eating 1 full can of eather chicken or beef Instints and she has stopped all licking. There is something in the dry foods, even the hosistic, grain free, the top of the best she cant eat. Somaybe its best to stay with a wet food.

Would it be ok you think to give Dixie any of the bones for her to chew on? Thinking that any protein would be good for her as long as its not from china, and not too much. This is one thing she does miss and thats being able to chew on a doggy bone. She weighs only 15.6 pounds and we check her blood count every week since her blood transfusion. I worry about her stomach and getting sick from something that isnt clean since her immune system is so weak.

I’am so glad to see so many people standing up for our fur babies and not for the dog food companies who only look to fill their wallets. This web sight does such a great job in showing the 5 star holistic, grain free foods that cost just about the same unless a dog eats the walmart junk, and if its because people cant afford anything better, a dog will be better off with a better grade food and end up eating less because all the nutritional needs are met. I wish some of the top dog food companies, Earth Born, and alike get together and put out a basic grain free, high quilitybrown bag dog food that if that is all someone could afford,it wouldnt cause their dog that they may love, become ill and cause heartach to the owners.

Beth, Thanks so much. I took her back today and her Dr. is just trying so hard to find out what is wrong with her. He gave her a shot today that is a 5th generation medication. Its new and last 2 weeks. and nothing needs to be done unless she turns for the worse. I do not take forgranted one single day with her and value every minute we have. She has been my family when my family has failed to be there, does that make since? It is so funny that a little dog who asks for nothing but food, water and a warm place to sleep at night, would have such a profound affect not only on me but on so many who has seen her coming and going from her vet. Everyone wants to know how she is doing. People from Petco and Pet Depot who have seen her over the years having coats, sweaters, dresses,p.j’s, are now just glad when we show up only to buy a new soft toy or to visit. She is my life.

She continued to not do well as I also tryed several holistic brand and found limited ingredient brands that work much better. Try Earth Born Holistic or Mike has a list of 5 star dry and wet food that have limited ingred. I hope she does well.

Jamienico, I hear and feel every word you are saying. My son came with me to look at things I will need for her burial. dress, favorite toy, ball, necklase with diamond stone with her name. I love her and I felt I could splurge on her to show others just how much i love her but she never knew any difference only she loved being next to me and me talking to her at night before we both fell asleep. how do we make these people or companies pay for what they have done to us and to our pets? nothing ever will replace your babies nor mine. I dont know what to do,maybe Mike would know where to get started. If 1 woman came up against a water company in Tx for causing cancer, why cant we come up against these companies putting stuff in dog food that claim feed them what you would eat. I got to one point 2 years ago of not liking what i was seeing on bags and started feeding Dixie organic human food but knew i couldnt match the vitamins she would need. So again I switched her to the best foods. I bought her some treats thats on the front said Vitality, pure chicken. I check out every word EXCEPT in the very bottom in tini words it said’made in china!’ I got sick and ran to her vet and he said she probably wasnt on it long enough to do any harm. i bought maybe 3 or 4 bags over the summer as yard treats when i would mow the yard,Dixie would sit and watch, when I got to close that she might get dust on her I took her in to sit on her window seat to watch me mow. She did everything with me and went everywhere with me. I hear every word you said. I know the feelings. I will never ever have another pet. My heart is shattered over Dixie

Hi, I was reading what you all were saying. Is there anything better then me buying boneless organic chicken from a organic processing plant and boiling the chicken, chopping it up,I can nibble on it my self or fix a chicken salad sandwich but I have fixed Dixie frozen cookies using the chicken, sweet potatos, carrots and making little round balls, flatten them out and place them on a metel cookies sheet in the freezer. Dixie loved them as a treet. After they froze, I would place them into a baggy and kept them in the freezer. she liked the crunch and she coulnt just swollow the treet, she had to chew it instead. We all love our babies and just like our own children, we all want what is the best for them. Please say a little prayer for my Dixie

Hi, my baby is dieing of cancer. She is in the hospital and they did a blood transfusion on her yesterday. Her vet has contacted specalist from around the us as well as england. Every time Dixie would sneez or acted like something was wrong we were at the vet. She is my life. She didn’t just sleep at the end of my bed but she had her feather pillow right next to me every night, and she loved clean sheets. She would watch me change my bed and could see new sheets going down and would wait and watch untill her bed steps were back in place and she would run up her steps and roll all over the bed and land on her feather pillow and watch me the rest of the day. Where I was,she was. She is my almost 10 yr old wire hair terrier. I adopted her when she was 9 months old.She is the love of my life since my divorce in 2002 after 30 yr marriage. I too have had cancer but I’m fine now and who sat with me every day I was sick? She was by my side everyday, day in and day out. Everyone knew Dixie where I live. They knew her at Belks, home depot, lowes, any place I could put her in her stroller and go into a store without food, she went and just loved having people talk to her and pet her. I firmly beleive there is a connection between the king of food they eat and cancer just like people. There is a Dr in Maryland whos name is Dr. Simpson who is helping people for free with dogs who have cancer. it is cancer research and dogs and people are much more close then mice. I will send you the names and info I have so you can see if it may help you and then you can pass the info on as I will be posting it also on Mikes page. Please say a little pray for my baby as I will for you too.

I guess I’am behind on computer stuff, but I have no idea how to post a picture of Dixie on DFA sight. I love it and would fill up a whole page about her(just kidding, maybe half of a page) Does anyone know if it is wrong to hand out flyers about Dog Food Advisor web address to people at pet stores out side and any other places? People just do not know enough about dog food and what is and isn’t in it. A friend of mine got a 2 month old puppy given as a gift,(300.00 gift) as cute as a button and they bought him puppy chow! I went and bought 2 bags of Puppy Born food and gave them a real bone for him to chew on Not cow hide, since they told me he already chewed up a wallet and flip flops! How do we get people to understand that when you feed your dog healthy dog food(4-5 stars) that they will feel more satisfied then feeding them corn products?

To Feather83, Could you please give me some more info on what type of laser treatments your vet used on your baby? I thought about making an appointment to see a Hemotaligist for me and start asking him about the problems and solutions to this in dogs. My insurance will not pay for my visit,I’m sure but since the same meds are used on Dixie as are used in humans, maybe something new could be considered. Dixies vet told me he is in contact with the Dr. who is the specialist in the US on this and the best in the country. I wish I could snap my fingers and she would be as good as new, for her sake.

Dixie went to her vet yesterday to do have the weekly blood test done,we will know on Monday. I spoke with her vet about having her spleen removed and would that help. He told me is would not lessen her life and it would be a 50/50 because the spleen removes the good and bad cells. At the time it sounds confusing but doing some research pays off. Why and how our dogs get the disorder should be looked into especially if it is as simple as no vaccines on the 2ed and 3 erd yr of life. Am I understanding this right? I wonder what the Vet for any President of the USA would say about the dogs that have lived in the White House. If they had this illness what would be the 1st form of treatment? Would they start off with Predisone? Would they remove the spleen right away? Where is the magic answer I want for my fur baby!

I feel like I don’t deserve to have her, as I never knew about the shot problems and did what the vets said needs to be done. I thought they would have her BEST interest at heart. I always said do what ever she needs to stay well! Im feeding Dixie organic chicken, boiled, added yesterday organic salmon, Newmens Own Organic beef, can and dry. I mix it all up and make little round balls and then freeze them so she has something that is a treat. But this is her regular meal. I cant see me without her and her without me. Hi all, My dog is 9 yrs old and as I have been asking questions from everywhere I can think of about her illness I have something to say about the perscription food from S.D. Dixie suffers from Hemolytic Anemia. She has been on SD Z/D for over a year and I started to notice her health just wasn’t the same during the year. Now I’am ocd when it comes to the love of my life,Dixie. I call and go to her vet so much,Dixie should have her own parking space! But now my baby of 81/2 yrs is very sick and I am trying to give her the best of the best of the best. Iam very scared for her because what I have read she may have to have her spleen removed. I just need to hear from others who may have gone through this type of illness with their fur baby. Dixie has been my rock. She has gone through my breast cancer with me. She went through my x husband friends who lived next door to us hurassment. She went through having lighter fluid sprayed on her and was in the hospital for 3 weeks, again it was the neighbors, thank goodness thay are gone and dead. She was hit by a car,no bones broken, she was playing with kids at the ball park,a car ran off the road 15 feet and hit her.The driver thought he hit a child. When he found out after turning around he hit a dog,he left. Everyone helped me load her in the car and we flew to the dr and again she was in the hospital for 3 weeks and her mom (Me) was beside her from 7am to closing everyday giving her finger tip drops of water, telling her how much I love her and stories of our walks to the parks and seeing the squrles and ducks. Then she and I were hit head on by a pickup truck. She was in her seat belt in the back seat. As I was taken by ambulance to the hospital,as fireman took her to the local animal hospital and told them to check her out from A to Z. I picked her up the next day and she was ok. EVERY DOG SHOULD BE IN A VESTED SEAT BELT! NOT IN A LAP OR IN THE BACK OF A TRUCK!!!! She has been my little wonder dog. I need to find ways to save this little girls life as she has saved mine so many times. Mike has done such a great job at letting us all know about the dog foods that I feel have so much to do with the health of our family members. If anyone has any way to let me know what they did for their baby who has this type of illness, please let me know. Thanks, I’m Dixie’s mom
