Thank you for pointing out the fiber…Those are good foods that you feed and the fiber is at a good percentage. There is a person on here with a boxer and I feel bad that the dog is having diarrhea, maybe he might do better with rice. He tried pumpkin for his dog but that didn’t work, that’s why for him I would suggest rice in his diet. I am sorry for coming off strong on the grain free diets…I just know a lot of k9 police dogs in my area that feed grain in diets only. Not that it is important, but I wonder why.

Marie: Hi, sorry if I upset you, I just was going by what I read in other posts besides this one. I have read that many dogs, not all dogs, have loose stools on too much fiber in grain free diets. I was only trying to help others if I can who’s dogs were having loose stools on grain free. Some dogs just need less veggie and fiber foods and too many peas is one of them.

natures select might be made by mid-American pet foods, I spoke to them and as I posted earlier they make evangers and Victor, I think he said natures select too. But if anyone buys Victor I would second guess it.

I just want everyone to know that evangers and Victor dog food is made by the same manufacture.

earthborn contains too many peas. Peas = loose stools. By the way I heard a lot of people complaining about earthborn lately…Look on dog food advisors page on earthborn and you will see what I mean. I care about all animals and I am just trying to help if I can.
Try a good food with some grains and see how it goes. maybe try precise or holistic select etc. Try too avoid high fiber percentages unless your dog does better on a high fiber diet. I am feeding Holistic select lamb and he does very well on it, now some people might say “its too much grains” however, I also give him some fresh meat with his dry. That boosts my protein up and it is fresh, easier to digest. Too many grain free foods have high protein too many fiber vegetables and to me I don’t like that. High protein is better when it is in its natural form oppose to any kibble. And grains like oatmeal and rice is good for stools and stomach can’t go wrong with that.

Grain free foods will cause looser stools, if we ate a lot of peas and beans we will be going to the Bath room quite often. Sorry not a fan of PEAS I rather have rice instead for my dog.
Dog food needs some binding agent and they are using these peas and beans and sweet potatoes, potatoes. A good dog food would be good amount of meat followed by some rice instead or oatmeal. Better for the dogs system, and you find no loose stools unless they have a food intolerance and that is usually a type of protein. The old fashion way is better!

I have read a lot and I had a GSD, and I have another GSD and too much protein is not good. First they will be hyper and it is an overload. I have a book on these breeds and 24-26 percent protein is ideal. Now high protein in natural meat is fine, but anything processed with high protein is not fine. Processed kibble weather the best or the worst is harder on the system oppose to fresh meats like we eat. So if people are feeding kibble the best percentage is 25…if you are feeding fresh meat is doesn’t matter. My first GSD ate 2lbs of cooked chicken with only 1 1/2 cups of dry that had a 26 percent protein. His protein level was boosted by my chicken. He never had problems with joints and he lived to 14 yrs old. This one I have now can’t have chicken so I buy red meat for him. I too want to try acana but I am afraid of the richness in the livers and protein concentrate.

Hi Deanna, if your pup is used to pro plan I would not try orijen just yet, is may be too rich for a puppy. if you want something better for right now, I would use eagle pack or holistic select or nutrisource then try acana when he or she is 2 yrs old.

I don’t know how to start a topic so I am using this so I can communicate. I don’t feed this food but I would like to say something about millet in dog food. Millet is mostly bird feed, it is very cheap filler it grows in poor soils and even in a drought. It is know that people or pets with thyroid issues should not eat millet. Years ago in poor countries millet was a staple in their diet b/c it grows fast and it is plentiful and in those countries researchers found a lot thyroid issues because of it. I did a lot of research on millet b/c I was not used to seeing it in dog food so it got my attention. Look it up on your own if you want to. Now I won’t say don’t feed it, I just wanted to let people know about it. The grains IMO that are very good for pets are oatmeal and rice. I like some grains in my dog food. By the way I am not saying millet is causing these issues, I just wanted to let people know about it. I think companies are using it b/c customers don’t want GMO’s in the dog food and millet is GMO free, however it doesn’t mean its good. I am not a professional I don’t think companies would put in dog food if it was bad. I just don’t care for it after what I read.

Thank you Kyle, for the info…I called and they said drs foster and smith makes it. But she spoke with an accent so double check I don’t want to give anyone wrong info.
On another note does anyone know of a dog food with beef and grains in it, I like some grains in my dogs diet. The theory of dogs eating grain free dog food because it is closer to their diet holds no water b/c wolfs don’t eat peas, lentils, chickpeas either. As far as allergies go most dogs are allergic to the protein not the grain. Just wanted to share that.

No, I didn’t try it yet, I want to try this because I like that they have a beef formula with no other meat protein. But I want to know where their ingredients are coming from.

Hi Linda A. I see you need another dog food, if this helps I feed Holist Select lamb, they do have other flavors. This food is for dogs with sensitive stomachs. hope this helps.

I would use grains for puppies, grain free will cause more bowel movements and you don’t want that for a puppy.
