When my dog was first diagnosed I used a combination of the prescription food W/D with mostly Wellness Core Reduced Fat and later switched to Royal Canine. After a couple of years she started having appetite and gastro problems caused by pancreatitis and we tried over thirty different high end low fat, low carb foods mostly purchased from Chewy.com because they are so great with customer service but in her final days we used Flint River Senior. They have several different food mixes and you can get samples too. Also very good customer service.

Good luck with the challenges of diabetes and if you aren’t already familiar, you should definitely go to the k9diabetes website and join the forum. Those people are the most amazing group and helped me through a multitude of concerns.

When my dog was first diagnosed with diabetes three years ago, I fed her a combination of the Prescription Hills W/D and Wellness Core Reduced Fat kibble. I didn’t like the ingredients in the prescription food so I thought mixing the two would be better. She was fairly well regulated until a recent bout of pancreatitis. We are also currently looking for a new food, something that will be good for both conditions.

Good luck to you with the diabetes. There’s a lot of trial and error involved in finding the right food. You might also want to check out the K9diabetes forum where you will find a great deal of information and support. http://www.k9diabetes.com

I bought the Holistic Select Senior and Canine Caviar Special Needs because both fit the Fat/Fiber requirement even though the Canine Caviar is rated only a two star. Not exactly sure why?

I’ve tried the Canine Caviar and at least she’ll eat it so that’s half the battle. I’m tempted to do the rotation thing and try the Holistic Select as the second food. Just nervous about how and when to introduce the new food as she is so picky I’m afraid she won’t like it and might refuse to go back.

    Any suggestions?

Horizon Legacy Grain Free, Salmon – Min fat listed is 15%
I need something less than 12% Fat

Grandma Lucy’s has the right amount of fat (9%) but too much fiber. Needs to be < 4% Fiber and this has 6.5% I was also wondering how mushy the food was after it gets mixed.

    Anyone else have any suggestions?

    I need < 12% Fat and < 4% Fiber

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually just ordered the Lew Olson book. I tried home cooking once before but the same thing happened, she ate for a few days then refused…

I’ll look into this further as well as any other kibbles that are suggested.

    Thanks!

I just signed up to be an Editor’s Choice member and I wanted to post a question under the Canine Cavier food but I can’t. My question is Why is the Special Needs Dinner only given two stars?

Also how do you use the HTML tags and attributes?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

I just posted a similar question about Low Fat/ Low fiber food in the Main section. Didn’t know there was a section on Diet and Health Issues and not sure how I got here.

What happens is when I find a food that she will eat, she will eat it for a few days and then won’t touch it again. I don’t think she’s just being picky, she seems genuinely uncomfortable and without an appetite for the food after she’s eaten it for awhile. Even the Vet said she’s tried to think of what would make a dog go off their food every 5 – 7 days, but can’t really come up with any real answers. To answer your question I am looking for a new food that both helps with her issues AND that she will like for more than a few days. Tall order I know which is why I’ve resorted to asking the masses…
