I’ve read same re bacteria HDM. That is good info re veggies which I’ve not heard prior.

I have plain yogurt but have yet to try. Still a bit concerned re calcium, although he is 14mos. He’s been on nor cal honey (1T) & 2 10mg allergy rx for seasonal allergies. I want to be sure I can identify what affects him if there’s an issue, so not to get crazy w/ too many changes.

    I ordered the book “Unlocking… !

Imnordrum, I have similar concerns w/ raw. I just want to ensure I’m feeding him the best I’m able, given his surgery… it’s prompted a lot of reading on food and LBDs. Which I knew nothing about prior, and thought I had been giving him great food (first 8mos) as the recommend of Eukanuba LB came from someone who raises lab guide dogs. When I actually read the label, corn was one of the first ingredients 🙁 I don’t even eat corn.

I think I would be open to trying 1 raw meal/wk, so long as he appears to be thriving and no new issues. Perhaps I could add sweet potato, I’m not game for rice unless he’s been ill. What are other vegs some of you give regularly? We do gr bean too, but he seems to get tired of that.

I also add water to every meal. I used to add warm, but we have a serious drought in CA and now he gets regular temp from faucet 🙂

Love this group. Thank you HDM!

Thanks for the book recommend HDM. Just what I’m looking for! I actually do have some Nature’s Valley Instinct in my freezer that I give on rare occasion. I also have a couple chicken backs in there too. I given him 1, which he wasn’t sure about initially.

Recently p/u Evanger’s (can) whole chicken thighs, and I thought “What a waste, I can do this.” Today I p/u chicken breast, family size pks .99/lb. How could I substitute that in? I struggle w/ the correct caloric intake quantity. I feel like I just about have Jazz on the right track after his post surgery ‘chubby sway’ (is how my kids referred to the few extra pounds after his elbow dysplasia surgery in January.).

He seems to be doing well, & he always get compliments on his healthy looking coat.

I’ve mentioned raw a couple times to our vet & have been told, “whatever you do… don’t feed raw.” I don’t understand how vet’s knowledge can vary so greatly.

I’m trying to do the best I can to feed our 89lb lab the healthiest I’m able.

Currently he has been on Orijen LB Adult. Jazz is now 1 yr old (Apr). Generally, I give him 3 cups daily, w/ Grizzly Salmon Oil. I substitute out 1/2 cup dry for 1/2 can Merrick, raw vegs or a couple sardines packed in water. I plan to give him Fromm for a change and switch back & forth for variety. For training snacks, I use apple, or died unsulferated, unsweetend fruit.

I don’t feel going raw entirely is something I can afford, however I’m open to toppers & suggestions, even the possibility of one meal per day other then dry.

    Thank you

Hi, could someone direct me as to how to most easily convert the suggested amount of calories into the correct amount of dog food for Jazz (1yr “today” neutered, male, blk lab / approx ideal weight 80lbs. Currently 87lbs.) Orijen shows 456 kcal/cup. My best figure is 3.5 cups/day. Also, at age 1yr am I to go w/ Adult or puppy recommend amounts?

I top food regularly, and an easy conversion could help me to best ensure he’s getting the right amouts 🙂 (Stell & Chewy, Merrick canned, sardines, chicken back… open to more ideas!)

BTW, he seems to be healing well after his Jan elbow dysplasia surgery. We are walking 5 days/wk 30mins-1hr each outing. He doesn’t seem to be limping while out walking, however maybe a “chubby-sway” is what my son calls it. (Hence, I’d like to ensure I’m feeding him correctly.) Although, at times when he gets up after lying/napping he limps. I feel as if his muscles are strengthening w/ walking. Sadly, no playing ball or dog park 🙁

    Thank you

My lab is not digging the chicken neck. I hope he doesn’t become ill.

Sounds like a busy wknd for sure!

I was feeling so good about my choice. I p/u Orijen adult. Now it sounds as if I should have p/u their LBP. I did not notice a significant difference in the 2 guaranteed analysis. Other than LBP note carbs & adult did not. I thought the overall consensus was the adult at 10 mos.

Susan responded to my email & her site is back up? She says any links that have the “2,” you’ll need to remove that “2” to find the article. I plan to follow & did like on FB, as well.

Lmk what you all think & if I should exchange Orijen Adult food for Orijen’s LBP?

PS How can I add a picture to my profile?

Thank you RDM, sounds as if you like alot of the info from Dr. Karen Becker as well?

You mention eggs, and she also says the shells are beneficial. Does this mean to break an entire egg on the food (raw) w/ shell? (In general dairy for me is another, like corn, I stay away from. I thought it was interesting to see that one, either Fromm or Orijen included Wisconsin cheese in their food.)

I went over to thetruthaboutpetfood, but the sight doesn’t seem as friendly for the first time visitor. Looking for the reviews on foods & lists.

Thank you again from Jazzy & family!

(note from my above post) I did reduce his food consumption from 5 cups to 4 cups after surgery. I feel like he’d go hungry w/ less, but that a better food would be beneficial.

Sharon, we to have a 9mo (apr 2013) old lab & I’ve been struggling as to which food to switch to from (Euk LBP). He is now in recovery, post Dysplasia/FCP and this is what got me reading. Although, our initial recommend for Euk is from a reputable guide dog trainer, therefore I assumed I must use it! When I began to actually read the ingredients and noticed corn as one of the top, I felt terribly. As I don’t even eat corn.

Jazz is 75/80lbs. He was neutered at time of surgery. He is not a lean as he was pre-surgery (FCP & neuter). He has been on rest for the past 4wks since surgery – no excercise. Very difficult, as he’s a puppy!

You say you switched to Orijen LBP (puppy? correct?) What info do you have as to how long Mystery should stay on puppy, and at what age should one transition to adult (Orijen Adult).

I would prefer to have 2 variety’s of dry and supp w/ topper such as canned, dehydrated, Stella & Chewy’s & sardine’s a few times ea wk. Since 8mo I’ve been using Grizzly Salmon oil. Because he’s still under 2, I don’t feel comfortable adding all kinds of supps, etc. I’d like to identify a good turmeric… although, I’m confused as when to use toppers & fish oil, turmeric & the amount, given I would be combining w/ his regular food. (For example: If he has 4cups of dry, what amt do you reduce when you include a topper (dehydrated, sardines or canned)?

I feel like I’ve just about narrowed my food search to a few brands to further look into, however there’s still confusion as to what I should look for in a food for my Lg Breed from age 9mo after. If there are other food recommends then the LBP that I should venture to please lmk?

    Hi RDM

Still a few Qs. It’s not clear if I should stay on a lg breed puppy (9mo male lab – who had recent surgery for FCP)? Or move to All Stages (& how can all stages be ok for lg breed? Confusing!) I’m not seeing any lg breed adult food on the list.
Unfortunately Jazz was neutered at time of surgery. How much less do I give? It’s my understanding you need to give less if dog was neutered do to slower metabolism from neutering.
I’ve heard conflicting info on supplements. Jazz is now taking Grizzly Salmon oil w/ meals. Concerning other supps, I’ve read you want to wait until they have fully developed before giving other supps b/c you don’t want to disturb what is developing naturally.
BTW, I love all info I’ve seen from Dr Becker.

    New to the forum!

I’ve been researching to identify a better food for our 9mo old blk lab, Jazz. He’s been on Euk Large Breed Puppy. This mo he had elbow surgery for Dysplasia FCP (& neuter 🙁 ). We were so upset. After seeing your recommend food list, my question is shall I switch him to an “all life stages” or keep him on a large breed puppy food until… when? If all stages, would I look for Large Breed “All Stages?”

When will he be full grown (male lab)? He is probably 75lbs since surgery.

Since surgery I’ve begun using Grizzly Salmon Oil Omega 3. I’m learning to identify better treats & seeking other necessary supplements highly recommends for such a young pup. Open to suggestions!

Thank you HDM for your efforts in compiling the list!
