Ono problem Peggy. I do wish there was a private message option here. 🙂 Wonder if that will turn into a smiley?

I’m in NH but never noticed unlabeled canned foods. I’ll look next time I’m there. Not sure I could buy n unlabeled food. If there was a problem, I’d have to know who to call.

Curious about the glucosamine, Dori. Gemma gets a liquid glucosamine which has to go in her food, no other way for her to eat it.

Where do you live? They may be itchy due to dry skin from heat being on. Have you checked for fleas? Itchy dogs don’t automatically say allergy to me.

I’m curious….how did someone from here contact you? Did you post your email or is there some way of contacting people here that I don’t know of?

    Karen,
When potty training any dog, no matter the age, leash training is the way to go. I learned the hard way with this. A past dog followed the other two out the dog door we had in that house. I realized after he had struvite crystals & I started watching him that he wasn’t urinating when I assumed he was. The dog door got replaced with a regular door we could walk out. I now have a kennel inside a fenced in yard; dogs who aren’t housebroken or need a refresher course go in the kennel on leash. Schedule has nothing to do with it nor does neighborhood; just hook the leash to her and have her potty wherever she normally goes. You mentioned medical: I thought your vet already ruled out medical outside of the precursor to crystals?

Doggie doors are hard when it comes to potty training. I’d treat her like a puppy, go out on leash only.

DogObsessed: thank you! We have adopted three senior dogs: Emma was an 8 yr old American Foxhound, Katie an 11 yr old sheltie & our current sheltie, Gemma, who was 10 or 12 when we got her two years ago next month.

It’s been forever since I’ve had only one dog but we adopt senior dogs so we’ve had dogs come & go often. We don’t prepare, we just have them meet in a neutral place (except our last dog, she’s just walked in & owned the place) and haven’t had any problems.

I order from Chewy.com, PetFlow.com, Wag.com and SportDogFood.com. In the past, I used Petfooddirect.com but shipping arrival was too inconsistent. Don’t order from doggie food.com, not recommended.

    Labs,
Mine usually go out every couple hours but since she peed (we think it’s her) right by the door, obviously we didn’t see her. Boone makes it obvious: he will sit at the door. If you don’t see him, he will run back & forth. If you miss that, he will nudge your hand. If you miss that, he’ll pee. Neither of the girls lets us know, unfortunately. Totally our fault. Thanks!

Yep, only tax on food at restaurants and hotel/lodging. We do have high vehicle registration to make up for it. Depending on where in maine, you’re close enough to shop here (offhand, live in Kittery/York, Lebannon/Sanford). Or, just move to NH. Its a beautiful state.

BC: no bathing going on here; can’t do it in the tub & they’re too big for the sink. Do you have any other collars or powder to recommend beside what Sandy linked?

I wouldn’t feed that at all. Brewers rice and the first ingredient? Corn gluten meal? Animal digest? These are the makings of a crap food. There are many supplements & drugs to use for joint issues. Grains are inflammatory, making this a poor choice.

I judge my dogs treats as much as I their food. Treats I like are anything from The Honest Kitchen and Sojo’s and grainfree ones from Buddy Biscuits. I don’t feed much for treats so others are probably more helpful than me. Definitely not Milk Bones!

    Naturella,
I’m still trying to wake up so maybe I’m not understanding what you were trying to do. Can you explain, one transaction at a time? Let me explain lol. IF you had say

Three $2.00 coupons off any bag of Wellness dry food, I do not think you can use more than one coupon per bag. Usually the bag says that.

IF you had a buy one bag get one free coupon, you *can* use a. $2.00 off of the one you buy but you cannot use a coupon off the free one. I’ve had these BOGO coupons and have argued with managers about using a coupon off of the one I’m paying for. I win. Always do lol.

This is non dog related but in the 80’s when my boys were small, Pizza Hut had a “get your pizza free if it’s not ready in 20 minutes” deal. We knew our local PH do we ordered a pizza with more toppings than we normally would have. Went to get it and our stopwTch was 20:36. The worker refused our free pizza, saying it was only 36 seconds over the 20. I ask where it said there was an X amount of a grace period. I ask for the manager. Maria comes out, says “hey Marie” lol. I explain, we get our pizza for free. Back then, Steve was sort of mortified that I challenged them. He’s grown since then!

I’m in NH. I give the last dose in October & start up again in May. This is what my holistic vet recommends. She does yearly heartworm testing.

One of my regular vets tells me I can test every other year.

I’m pro spay/neuter but ONLY if the owner is responsible. IMO, as someone who has never had an intact dog, while females are in heat, they must never, ever be outside alone. They must go out on leash and not tethered either. Unaltered male dogs have gone to great lengths to get to an unspayed dog.

I know someone who didn’t spay their dog. Fenced in yard, she didn’t see the problem in leaving the dog into the yard, while in heat. Yeah, she spayed her after the puppies were born.

Rich, a relatively healthy senior dog needs more protein than younger dogs:

there is a good article to read. My seniors eat the same as the other dogs, they just get added supplements (I just posted in your other thread)

Yeast can be a tough issue. Any chance you can do raw? One of my dogs had yeast ear infections & when I put him on raw (no fruits or veggies, the sugar in them “feeds” yeast), they went away.

If you must feed kibble, look for one without white potato. In our forums here, look for my stickie on potato free foods. I think it’s in the dog food ingredients forum. I haven’t updated the list but it’s a good start.

You have to decide if you want prey model (no fruits or veggies) or barf type, with them.
I don’t do fruits or veggies, I buy ground & scoop it out. Premades that are prey model are Vital Essentials & Primal. Pretty sure Primal is.

Pre mades that have them are Stella & Chewys, Natures Variety (I don’t like them), Answers and Steve’s real food as well.moh and Darwins (available only from them).

A raw diet would be best; it has the most moisture which is very important. Are you looking to do a pre made or are you doing your own?
