My Mickey absolutely goes wild over bully sticks. I buy BEST brand from Amazon and they are truly odor-free. I monitor Mickey too while he’s eating the bully sticks and take it away when it gets down to about an inch or so. Not an easy thing to do. LOL.
I give him about three per week. Is that too much? Have yet to try the pig or cow ears.Gloria KMemberMy dog devours bully sticks with an intensity you wouldn’t believe. He absolutely loves them. I give him about three a week maximum. I get them from Amazon the brand is BEST BULLY STICKS. This is rated one of the best brands and they’re odor-free which is a definite plus. I’m not sure if pet stores carry them but you could try.
Gloria KMemberDanita, I have a terrific board on Pinterest titled DOG FOOD AND TREATS. Look me up on Pinterest and take a look. Great recipes for treats and biscuits
Gloria KMemberWhy not make your own chicken broth… it’s so much better, contains real chicken along with carrots and celery-you can omit the onions-and so easy to make. Just get some chicken wings or breast with the bone in. throw them in a pot with carrots and celery and let them simmer for about 40 minutes. No salt, no bay leaf, nothing; your dog doesn’t need that. You could make a couple quarts of chicken stock and freeze it for your dog’s food. Thanks for responding by the way, I don’t think I really need to worry about it then because the ratio of onions to broth is pretty wide.
December 27, 2014 at 3:50 pm in reply to: Feeding dehydrated fruits and vegetables #61982 Report AbuseGloria KMemberWith all the confusion I think I’ll pass on the avocados for Mickey. There are a lot of other things he can eat. LOL
December 26, 2014 at 2:49 pm in reply to: Feeding dehydrated fruits and vegetables #61864 Report AbuseGloria KMemberYes grapes onions and avocados are not to be fed to dogs. I was thinking of the same things that I put in his food like carrots, sweet potato chips, green beans, things like that.
Since they’re dried without salt, sugar or other spices I can’t see why they would be any different than raw or cooked veggies or fruits in his food. He loves to chew things like that.Gloria KMemberDori what kind of dehydrator did you get? Do you like it? I’m wondering if I make dog biscuits and cookies in the dehydrator inside of the oven will they be, crisp and crunchy rather than chewy? Anybody know the answer to this?
Gloria KMemberThe Nesco SnackMaster Pro FD 75A – 2200 reviews almost all five stars. Looks like a good one. I don’t know why I am unable to post a picture on this website but there’s nothing to click on to post.
Gloria KMemberI decided it would be in my best interest to get a dehydrator because I like to dry my own herbs and now I can also make dog biscuits and jerky for Mickey. I looked on Amazon and found the perfect one. Too bad I didn’t think of this sooner I could’ve asked Santa for it.
Gloria KMemberThank you BCnut. I don’t have a dehydrator but will use my oven.
Gloria KMemberMark A, My dog loves to chew and I’ve been thinking about making my own jerky but not sure how to do it. Please post the recipe and directions on how you make your chicken jerky. Thanks
Gloria KMemberMy dog loves anything hard and crunchy-the harder and crunchier the more he likes them. He also loves the Zuke’s mini treats peanut butter flavor. I put four or five of those in his Kong and he plays with it for an hour getting them all out. He loves them.
Gloria KMemberYour answer makes sense. I don’t think dogs need a lot of carbs to begin with so I really could cut the rice in half. I got the recipe from a veterinary nutritionalist Wish I could remember her name.
Gloria KMemberCurious as to why drop the rice. It seems to be a required ingredient in almost all recipes I’ve seen for homemade dog food. I now add the cottage cheese as a topper – 1 tablespoon every morning. Mickey inhales this mixture.

Gloria KMemberI simmer the turkey gizzards along with the hearts and livers that came in a large package. I ground everything up in my food processor and then add a tablespoon or two every couple of days to his food. He seems to absolutely go wild over this.
I save the broth in little half cup containers and freeze them. I add a couple spoonsf to every meal. My friend said “when I die I want to come back as your dog.” LOLGloria KMemberWhat are your thoughts on Bully Sticks and nylon bones?
Gloria KMemberGoing to try it the long way here’s my recipe for dog food:
2 1/2 pounds ground beef/chicken/mix
1/2 lb. assorted giblets/organ meats
1/4 cup coconut or olive oil
3 hard-boiled eggs chopped
3 tablespoons flaxseed
1/2. Cup wheat germ
1 cup rolled oats
2 cups cooked rice
2 cups homemade chicken or beef broth
1 cup grated carrots, finely chopped spinach, chopped green beans, and peas
1/2 cup pure puréed pumpkin
3 tablespoons ground egg shell powder
1 cup chopped cranberries and apples
1 cup cottage cheeseYou can cook each item separately as you go or place everything into a casserole dish and bake at 350° for one hour. I add 3 tablespoons of homemade chicken or beef broth to each dish at each meal.
Gloria KMemberI make my own dog food for Mickey, my 11 pound terrier mix that I adopted about a month ago. He goes absolutely wild at meal time and eats every bit -actually gobbles it down. I’m wondering if he’s getting enough calories. I feed him 3/4 cup of food at each meal twice a day.
For some odd reason I can’t seem to paste the recipe onto this post. What am I doing wrong?
I’m copying from my notes on my iPad and pasting it to this post on my iPad.Gloria KMemberLMAO I’M LAUGHING SO HARD I CAN’T EVEN REPLY TO THAT.
Gloria KMemberTheBCnut: I have several recipes on my Pinterest board for food by people who seem to know what they’re talking about but I don’t have actual measurements for what I feed him. I neglected to add that I do feed him dried cranberries and/or finely chopped apples. The recipes said I haves seen called for a gigantic quantities such as 10 pounds of ground beef, 18 eggs, etc. that’s far too much food to have to store for an 11 pound dog. I broke it down as best I could but he still gets a far better diet a lot of my friends feed them table scraps. Wish I had a really good nutritious recipe with amount small enough so I can freeze about eight or 10 two- serving containers. Anybody?
Gloria KMemberGood point Elizabeth. I thought about that too because I did pay about six dollars for a bag of sweet potato fries. That’s insane considering the sweet potato cost a fraction of that. I have an oven and I know how to use it so that’s a good idea. Do the fries get hard, I mean hard enough to give them something to chew on for a few minutes?
Gloria KMemberTheBCnut: I just got a shelter rescue dog about 10 days ago, (11 lb. terrier mix) and I have been making his food and supplementing it with a little kibble. I chop everything real fine and grate the carrots with a rasp but I cook all of this homemade food – nothing raw. Could that make a difference in being able to digest it better? I just can’t seem to bring myself to purée the stuff and give it to him like baby food …yuck. I give him ground beef or ground chicken, hard-boiled eggs, spinach, carrots, some ground egg shells, oatmeal and occasionally rice or barley.
Gloria KMemberFunny you should ask about the sweet potato fries jerkys. I just bought a bag a couple of days ago, gave one to Mickey and he inhaled it. This 11 pound terrier mix doesn’t seem to realize that you have to chew jerky. When I first got him I bought him one piece of beef jerky about 6 inches long just to see what he would do with it and it lasted about three minutes. That was one dollar well spent. LOL. He LOVES sweet potato fries.
Gloria KMemberI’ve been reading the comments on this particular subject and want to add my two cents worth. For those of you who don’t know, I just adopted Mickey, a rescue shelter dog, one-year-old terrier mix, 11 pounds. This dog drinks no water whatsoever EVER! I could not imagine how this dog was surviving without water and yet urinating at least two or three times a day. I went so far as to measure the water that I gave him, 1 cup into his water bowl, waited 24 hours then poured it back into the measuring cup – still one cup. Yesterday I looked outside while making my bed and there was Mickey drinking out of my koi pond. THAT’s were he’s getting his water from. I have an excellent filter and a UV light so the pond is crystal clear, no algae, however I’m concerned as to whether this could hurt him or not. I may have to cordon off the pond until he learns not to drink out of it. What do you think- could this have hurt him? And how can you tell when a dog has crystals in his urine?
Gloria KMemberHi Dori, sorry it took me so long to respond but I’ve had a ton of trouble getting back into this site. Apparently my device was not working the way it should to get in here because the administrators checked my login and said it was working perfectly. However a little bit of manipulating on my part and I was able to get in and want to thank you for your response. Things are going well with Mickey, I’m so pleased with him and fortunately for me, he’s a year old and already house broken and understands the word “no.” Frankly I think that was said to him thousands of times LOL. Anyway I really am enjoying him.
Gloria KMemberMellissaandcrew, The vet said he is definitely a terrier mix but who knows what he’s mixed with. He has very long slender legs and amber eyes and his fur is shaggy , so it could be anybody’s guess.

Gloria KMemberSusan, Mickey is a shelter rescue dog I adopted about a week ago. He’s a one year old mixed terrier and weighs in at 11 pounds.
I uploaded the photo after much frustration and searching and trial and error from Gravatar. If I can just figure out how to add a photo to a post that’s relevant I’ll be doing fine.- This reply was modified 9 years, 4 months ago by Gloria K.
Gloria KMemberOH MY GOSH I DID IT. I can’t believe it took me so long to get through this. Thank you so much for all your help. This is Mickey.
Gloria KMemberOkay I was able to upload the photo after several tries. My problem now is that I want to change the photo to the email address that matches the one on dogfoodadvisor.com.
I posted a different e-mail address for Gravatar. I can’t seem to do that…does anyone know how? I would like Mickey’s photo to appear on both Gravatar and on this site.- This reply was modified 9 years, 4 months ago by Gloria K.
Gloria KMemberThanks so much for the reply crazy4cats. I have to say while this site is extremely informative and I’ve grown to really like it, it is probably the most difficult site I have ever navigated. It is not user-friendly that’s for sure. I just wish there was an easier way to change my profile photo to my dog’s photo instead and like almost all other sites and forums there was an easy way to post a photo like clicking on a camera icon. And all other sites I download directly from my camera roll or photo stream on my iPad and iPhone. Soooo easy!
How about it administrators? Think you can make it easier for us?- This reply was modified 9 years, 4 months ago by Gloria K.
Gloria KMemberI am a new dog owner, not my first dog by any means but haven’t had a dog for 30 years and the dog foods that were available back then have changed by today’s standards.
I just adopted a terrier mix from a shelter last week and I’m wondering about this discussion on Science Diet dog food. I was provided a bag of Purina kibble at the shelter but I prefer to make my own dog food. I give Mickey three fourths homemade and one fourth kibble. My question is what is the problem with Science Diet? I’m not familiar with this product but I know several people who feed this to their dog. Can anyone tell me what the downside to this is dog food?Gloria KMemberKAYLA, how on earth were you able to post a picture of your dog? I’ve been trying to figure that out for several days now. I don’t see anywhere to upload a photo.
Gloria KMemberThank you all, I know you’re trying hard to explain to me and walk me through it but maybe my problem is that I am using an iPad instead of my laptop. Haven’t turned on my laptop for over six months. I’ll have to go and see if I can work it through my computer instead of my tablet then I’ll get back to you. Too bad I can’t upload a photo with my reply because I would show you what I see when I use my iPad directed to Gravatar.
Gloria KMemberSusan I have tried everything. Of all the sites that I belong to this was the most difficult to navigate. I was able to get into Gravatar, sign up and added 2 photos to the photo gallery but it won’t let me set the photos. It says “upload an existing photo “but nothing else to click on. I went over to the right pane and clicked on the photo gallery to upload the two photos. Very puzzling. There is no photo on my top right to hover over as you suggested. HEEELLLPPPP!
Gloria KMemberTell me how you got it there. I can’t find any way to edit my profile picture except Gravatar
