LOL, correction…anything that goes in THEIR body, not mine, LOL!!!
February 4, 2014 at 4:03 pm in reply to: PET OWNERS BEWARE OF CANINE CAVIAR DOG FOOD #33138 Report AbuseGemma60537MemberI’ve been feeding Canine Caviar to my dogs for almost three years and I’ve never had an issue…in fact my dogs have done great the entire time! I’m in the Chicago area and had never heard of it but my Labrador breeder feeds it to all of her dogs and so I kept both of our puppies on it after they came home with us. They smell great, nice firm stools, ripped muscles and healthy teeth, good breath. Our 9 month lab is gassy but our 3 year old literally NEVER passes gas and they eat the same food now. I rotate through the Wilderness and the Open Sky formulas.
The first time I noticed a change in the size/shape of the food I was very alarmed and a little freaked out and I messaged their Facebook page and they told me that it’s because they don’t use any preservatives and so sometimes the ingredients vary in color and size.
I’m SUPER neurotic of anything that goes in my body but I definitely trust them. My breeder knows their owner and she really raves about him and the food. Her labs are her babies just like mine are and I feel 100% safe giving them this food. Maybe you can message their Facebook page, too? I think I get a better response sometimes in general (not just with them) from companies.
Gemma60537MemberAnd obviously a choice entirely up to you. I guess I’m more of the camp that I’d much rather stay on their product because of what goes into it than dump them for non-food related issues. But I have the advantage that I already feed them Canine Caviar so I can see the benefits of their products first hand every time I look at my dogs, versus just hearing word of mouth.
Gemma60537MemberLast summer I went to a meeting to join my local AKC club and I managed to attend the one night that they had a rep for Nutro foods out to speak…there I sat politely not telling him to take his products and go away as I was brand new to the club. He went on and on about Greenies and seemed a little surprised when I declined a handful of free ones or the free t-shirt that he was giving away. Mine chew on moose antlers, deer antlers and get their teeth brushed a few times a week.
I opted not to join the club. 🙂
Gemma60537MemberI saw this the other day and wanted to wait to chime in…I have fed Canine Caviar for about two and a half years. I learned about it through my friend/breeder who is an acquaintance of the founder, which is Jeff Baker who was mentioned as a good source of info. We had three senior dogs very close in age who passed away as each one hit 13, so now with my 2 year old Lab and my 10 week old Lab puppy I am NEUROTIC about anything that hits their bodies. I believe strongly in my Canine Caviar.
They are a pretty small company, so they probably do not have vast numbers of customer service people to answer questions, but my friend/breeder who made me aware of this brand swears by it with all of her dogs…and she’s one of those breeders who LOVES her dogs and carefully does a litter once or twice a year. I don’t think there’s some awful cover up over at CC. I know they are extremely cautious with their product, so it seems way more likely to me to be a printer error versus an error in the recipe of the food.
Personally I feed the Chicken & Pearl Millet formula to my 10 week old pup just like I fed it to my 2 year old since it’s so similar to the large breed puppy formula. My breeder says she’s been feeding it to her pups for 10 years, before their large breed pup formula was available.
Gemma60537MemberMy Lab eats grass when it’s summer. He was obsessed with eating grass when he was a young pup, and he’s on a great food, so I don’t think he’s missing anything. Now he only eats some of the grasses and only in the summer, leaving me to believe that he just likes fresh June grass!!
June 26, 2013 at 1:31 pm in reply to: What's the best food for my dog with elevated liver enzymes? #20314 Report AbuseGemma60537MemberI’m personally a dedicated Canine Caviar customer. I learned about them from my Lab breeder and have fed them for 2 years. I fed our senior Basset Hound their Special Needs formula which might be a good option because it’s lower in fat and it has a lot of plants in it. I think you can contact them to see if they have a recommendation.
Gemma60537MemberHere’s an interesting blog that talks about the nitrogen in the urine rather than the PH.
http://blog.weecleaner.com/index.php/2012/09/why-dog-urine-kills-grass/Now, I’m neither a chemist or a lawn expert but it is interesting nonetheless.
June 3, 2013 at 3:53 pm in reply to: Going crazy trying to figure out what type of food is best #18684 Report AbuseGemma60537MemberOh, and 74 pounds is probably perfect for your lab! Mine weighs that, and he’s of the stocky show variety of labrador…when he hits 80 I get scolded for having a chunky lab. Most labs are way too plump! Just a layer of fat over his ribs is all you need. 🙂
June 3, 2013 at 3:50 pm in reply to: Going crazy trying to figure out what type of food is best #18683 Report AbuseGemma60537MemberI think the first step is to leave the big box stores and look for smaller stores that are focused on pet wellness. My personal favorite is Canine Caviar. They have not had a recall on their dried kibble and my Lab THRIVES on it. It’s not cheap, but it has a lot of calories per cup so your portion might be different. I had three dogs in a row who were very sick, back when we used to feed Science Diet, Nutro, Purina Pro Plan and other “popular” brands. I happened across a dog food ranking chart a few years ago and nearly cried at what I learned about mainstream foods. I have made it my mission to learn about nutrition and to never feed my 2 year old lab anything bad.
Gemma60537MemberWhen our Lab pup was a newborn we vowed to NEVER give him human handouts, especially since we invested so much into buying awesome organic limited ingredient dog food. Well, those big brown eyes and sweet/serious lab face have worn us down, so he gets a little lick of peanut butter here and there, part of my piece of cheese if I’m eating one. I’ll share my banana with him by breaking off a piece here and there as I’m eating one. And despite the fact that I’m totally anti-corn in his diet, when we pop popcorn (using a popper, not microwave bags) we set aside a tiny little portion for him without salt or butter. He also gets baby carrots when we purchase them. 🙂
June 3, 2013 at 3:35 pm in reply to: Looking for a new food with limited recall history #18679 Report AbuseGemma60537MemberHi Amy, I’m a Lab mom and I swear by Canine Caviar. I only learned of them 2 years ago from our friend/breeder, and it’s all my 2 year old lab has ever eaten…in the womb, through puppyhood, and to this day. The dry kibble has never had a recall and they are super cautious about their product. I LOVE it! We switched to a different organic brand for about a week when our dog was about 6 months because we have to special order the Canine Caviar…within that week he lost his shiny coat, so back we went, happy to special order it! We just stay a bag ahead. 🙂
Oh, and he smells amazing, breath, body, no doggie gas, and he doesn’t get bathed with shampoo but once or twice a year!
