Not sure if this is the best spot for this ?? My 5 yr old Great Pyrenees just started on wellness canned as back up to home cooking . She seems to like , CORE , Grain FREE , Turkey, chicken liver, turkey liver formula . AND Core , grain free Turkey , pork liver & Duck Formula . They both look like baby food & smell good , I used the few dented cans first , I can’t tell that they are bad in any way from the dents . She only ate 1/2 can of 12.5 OZ , Grain FREE ,Turkey & Duck Stew with sweet potatoes & Cranberries . I mixed the second 1/2 with good food scraps , I had to ask her to eat the last few bits of the wellness at the bottom . It looks KIND of like some of my home food , you can SEE the different bits . Her norm is to clean the plate on any food she likes . She seems to like MY sweet potatoes , they may have real butter on them at times or mixed with other good food as well as cranberries . Many times she will eat , peas , carrots , & salad if it has dressing & or cooked with other meat enough . Still no barfing . She is smart dog , I will give her the 11 cans I have left & likely not buy more of that . I WILL get more of the (2) Grain Free Core . I also have one other I have not fed yet . Of 4 cases from chewy.com, I got about 6 dented cans .
frostyrockykMemberIn your new home , do they spray the yard , are other pets near by . My sister in Calf said in close packed homes , if the guy next door was not on it , it was easy to get them back .
frostyrockykMember@ Sue’s Zoo … LOVE THAT PUP !! @ Dog Foodie…… I found this spot to try & learn what you were warning me about , because I don’t know . I live on a lake with sharp chert & limestone gravel as a shore line , my pup would run to the shore & gobble it up like it was candy . He knew I didn’t want him to have it so he would just slam it ! I was at the end of my rope , I couldn’t leave him alone outside . None of my other dogs ever did this & my vet said this must stop or else. Some would pass, but I had a real problem , as the vet said I TOPPED with cottage cheese & it worked well & fast to get him off the rocks . I think it was beniful puppy , at the time , I thought that was good food at the time . My 5 yr old has now had her 2nt can of wellness , I got 4 different grain free as a back up to my home cooking , she likes it & no barfing . Thanks to the person that put this thread back up front .
frostyrockykMemberI have yet to fully understand this site & admit to not reading the rules on posts , I thought this thread would fly & still make my point . I am a softy for Great Pyrenees & mutts & most any dog & critter , BUT,, I am a guy ! HA! & I don’t like trolls in any hat !!!
frostyrockykMemberRE; How this could happen , I didn’t think Brenda gave enough info to really make that call , like time between , what was the new food , what kind of dogs , do they run free . I would guess Brenda & her Vet know more about the details , in her own time she may want to add some of that . My first reaction is to go on the war path , But I have a VERY Strong Motive To NOT try to Blame without just cause . Strong feelings are not proof . Could be anti freeze or some other toxin , vermin constantly come out of the woods , but I never put poison out in fear the dogs may find it or eat the dead vermin & get sick . Are the people next door friendly to your dogs or have they left any toxin out not thinking a dog could get into it , like anti freeze . Life is not fair , and never will be . When my 5 yr old first started barfing , years ago , it started on Diamond , Lamb & rice , that would have made 3 commercial foods she would barf on , one time a week ??? I called Diamond & the seller ….. they just blew me off . After home cooking , NO BARFING !
frostyrockykMemberI must say DodFoodie , I got the same disconnect as you did RE: ” maybe the second one got sick when the first one did ” I guess it could be POSSIBLE …. I DON’T KNOW , I would bet hundreds that they didn’t . Highly unlikely is my thought . But the gut punch kind of took my mind off that . I have felt the pain she has & still do , likely not as bad at this time . This may sound off the wall but , I had a dream about 3 months after we lost Frosty , he came to me & told me I had enough pain & it was time to move on . It did help a little , 30% +/- ?? I have had to think back 30 years when I lost my first dog , I remember deep pain , that is long gone now & I can think of him & all of them I have lost , with no pain at all . Now I am looking forward to the time I can think of Frosty the same way . I am not there yet ! I have been looking for a new pup , that may help . No hurry , I will find him when I find him . I think my other dog also wants a new friend . I do have lots of photos & some video of most of them , That helps a little .
frostyrockykMemberRE: Someone needs to do something !! Brenda , you just did , but don’t stop here , tell this to any person you know that has pets & is not made of stone . We have all trusted Other people to to do the right thing & as we are learning , some don’t care if they put you & your pet at risk if it puts $1.00 in their pocket !! Turn your pain against them . The best way to pay them back is don’t give them 1 more penny . So Sorry !!!
frostyrockykMemberSmart Dog !!
frostyrockykMemberI would have thought they would have just cut it off or freeze it ??
frostyrockykMemberI hope all is well . I did find a different FREE 24 hour vet hot line 1-888-426-4435 , All of us should have the numbers in a place they can be had quickly . Also look for numbers of vets close to home that will take a call or return a call quickly 24 hours a Day !!

frostyrockykMemberSo sorry !! Some vets have a 24 hr line , they may call back . I don’t know much about the drug , in the past mine have barfed , but shortly after .. hours not days .
frostyrockykMemberFLEA TRAP ,, I have a part fix for fleas that works very well . In a safe area put a sheet pan of water with about 1 or 2 drops of any soap in it , hang a bare light bulb over it , 6″ to a foot over the water . Some people put it in front of a low TV set over night . At night when all the lights are out , they jump for the light & end up in the soapy water & sink to the bottom . THIS MUST BE DONE IN A SAFE MANNER!! If you want to see if they are in an area TO TREAT and or to see if the treatment worked this is a good test . My vet has also told me you must spray the yard also , depending on the area I think he is right . Fleas are attracted to heat & light . Keep in mind if the bulb gets in contact with carpet or wood or paper , it can start a fire , ( keep it out of the water also!! ) so keep all pets & kids away from it . I would only use this at night when all the lights are out . Depending on how many fleas there are , it is possible to catch a lot of fleas .
December 18, 2014 at 11:27 pm in reply to: Do you see a Vet regularly? Testing? Yes or no? #60812 Report AbusefrostyrockykMemberI’m with you on as little meds as possible , as far as I know my dogs got shots for parvo . I don’t know if that is the right spelling . I have not seen you all mention that yet as far as I know . Any thoughts on that ? I have not told this part of the problem I had with Frosty . Last Nov. he had a seizure , then one in Mar. , then a 3 day storm in June that did him in . I don’t know 100% what did that , I think one of the Flea & tick meds that you put on their back is my guess . He was on the low side of the weight scale & a week or so later his hair came out in clumps around his collar , I have never seen that in any of my dogs . I think possible harsh meds , bad food and or some other toxin could be a trigger once they start down that road . I never gave him any meds after the hair came out . I think the time frame from the tick meds to the first seizure was about 2 months . At the time I didn’t know I had a problem so I didn’t TIME IT ! That was a first for me … no fun at all . At this time I want to stay as far away from ANY of that as possible & only what is really needed . My 5 yr old is now 2 months past her yearly check up , I can just see the look on my vets face when I tell them , I don’t want any of their CR@P. That will go over real well !!
frostyrockykMemberWalt I just put my chewy.com order in for 4 cases of 4 different wellness canned ……… many thanks to all here . If Rocky won’t eat any of it, I plan to give it to the local shelter . Not sure what your plan is , please give any that may go out of date to your local shelter before it gets too old . Good Luck !
December 18, 2014 at 1:41 pm in reply to: Do you see a Vet regularly? Testing? Yes or no? #60669 Report AbusefrostyrockykMemberI am so glad you got an apt. with the vet , had you said this in your other post , I’m sure we all would have said “time to bring him in” . The vet may find other problems , and or you will KNOW your pup is good to go !
frostyrockykMemberLike many here I am not always happy with my Vet. I have also had times when I felt like I wanted to save $$. There are times when the cost of saving $1 = $30 . My thought is , if I want my vet to be there when I really need him / her , if I can , I should spend a few extra $ with Them & not WALMART! If they check out the stool , I trust them to give me the right meds , Just a thought .
frostyrockykMemberOne other thing to keep in mind , always wash your hands after you handle your dog & clean up as much poop as possible , burn it or put it in the trash. Wash before you eat ! If you see them drag their butt on the ground , likely the same problem . At low infestation they are no big deal , I have heard they can plug up a dog if left alone . I got one 80 lb dog from a guy that had 8 or so adults & a batch of new pups , he was about 7 months old . Not long after I had him he barfed up a base ball size ball of worms , I had never seen anything like that before or since . He lived to over 13 yrs ! ALL IS WELL !
frostyrockykMemberAs I said , my dog story is 30 yrs long . To be Clear , in June Frosty died at 2 1/2 from possible toxin . At that time I quit ALL COMMERCIAL DOG FOOD For my other dog Rocky . Last fed was , Purina one lamb & rice . As you all know , any food less than 4 star is crap . I am happy with home cooking , I found this site looking for some canned to back it up now and then. I DON’T know that the food had any connection to his death.
frostyrockykMemberI started this in case other folks had the same problem . I saw in a post the use of cottage cheese in home made food & made me think of this . RE: calcium , I got the cook book ” REAL FOOD for healthy dogs & cats ” in the book they cover many , many things . I know too much of anything can be bad , like a belly full of rocks & a huge vet bill to cut him open to take them out ! I don’t recall word for word , but they talked about the need for Phosphorus with calcium . There are also charts of how much per weight of dog . Like many here I also mix up what I feed my dog , my guess I don’t feed enough calcium , I don’t give it every meal & also give her cottage cheese , milk , sour cream , cheese , ice cream , yogurt . She gets deer bones from the woods on her own & killed & eaten rabbits . RE: raw bones , most people likely can’t get them , but if you know any deer hunters , the full rib cage is good for them to chew on . The ribs are good because the dogs eat them like buggs bunny eats a carrot . They use their back teeth to nip off bits of about 1/4 inch at a time , so there are no shards that would cut their insides , just crushed bone . Their teeth come out super clean . I’m not a raw food kind of guy & am a little freaked out about what they may catch from the deer. But hunting season in MO. is mostly cold so I don’t think it will spoil too soon . Other than the ribs , I take away any bones they bring home . I have raised Grt. Pureness dogs for about 30 years & only had problems with 1 a few months ago , that’s why I’m here. They eat a lot & I have fed them LOTS of table scraps , deer & catfish for ever & had zero problems related to food . I don’t know what killed Frosty ?? The Med. College cut him up to find out because they couldn’t save him & they wanted to know why . Bottom line , they don’t know for sure , age 2 1/2 , possible toxin . The av. age of my dogs was 12 years , the ones not hit by a truck , shot , antifreeze, or just gone & never came back ??? Bo Bear was shot in one eye by a turkey hunter & later BLIND sided by a truck ! He was not fixed & 1 rainy night just took off running & that was the last time I saw him alive . I think it’s a good Idea to get them fixed if you don’t want pups . Every single one was the BEST DOG EVER!!
frostyrockykMemberI think the meals listed are great , ……. I would drop the rice 100% , & Gloria’s dish should be able to cook from raw in 1 hour with a lid on it at 350. Also things like peas with a very short cooking time could be add near the end & the cottage cheese could be a topper ( cold ). I think we have many good cooks here! PS I think I need to start a new thread on cottage cheese !!
frostyrockykMemberLiver & Gizzards , need different cooking times . I gave my 80 lb dog a giz & liver whole , she ate them whole quick & just as quick barfed them up . So now I cut them up & she loves all of them . In the past she had a barfing problem , First , dimd. ( BARF ), then benifil ( barf ) , then purina one lamb & rice , ( barf ) . This was over a few years . Then I was educated & lost Frosty a very cool dog . Thanks to all the people on youtube as well as DR Karen Becker DVM ( cook book ) . I found this place looking for good food to back up my home COOKED food . Other than what I have said , the 5 yr old GR Pyrenees , quit barfing on home cooking .
frostyrockykMemberMy Grt. Pyrenees had them , I think it started from Nexguard ? ? ? He was at the bottom of the weight scale , not long after clumps of hair fell out from around his collar . I will never put any of that on my dogs ever again.
