I’ve had 2 GSDs in the past and both were picky eaters. Actually, that isn’t exactly true – they would eat anything I fed them by hand. Ugh! Sadly, I lost each of them before they turned 10. I WISH I had known about VeRUS when I had either of these dogs. I feel certain they would have lived much healthier lives and lived longer if I had fed them this really good dog food.
I now have 2 and a half dogs (the half being my mom’s dog who I’ve been keeping for the last 5 months). One is an 11-y-o Golden Retriever. Actually, she’ll be 12 on Jan 1st. She acts like she’s 5 and I KNOW it’s because I feed her VeRUS. She used to be itchy, lethargic, and fat. Now she’s back to being energetic with a beautiful coat. She’s bouncy! 80 pounds of 12 year old bouncy golden fur! She’d be skinnier if my husband would stop feeding her cheese, but all things considered, she’s in fantastic shape.
If you contact the people at VeRUS and tell them about your dog, they’ll email you back with suggestions on which of their foods to try, then send you samples. If they recommend more than one ‘flavor’, they’ll send you more than one type of sample. They will also give you suggestions for how to help your dog if they are stress eating or have another type of food/eating issue. Just do a google search for veruspetfoods.com.

Two of the dogs currently in my house are considered small dogs – 15 lbs each. I feed them VeRUS. There a several things I like about VeRUS – the food doesn’t smell disgusting like dog food usually smells & the dogs poop more efficiently when eating VeRUS – but one of the absolute best things about it is the size of the kibble. The pieces are small – slightly smaller than a dime. It isn’t so small that they can inhale it or lose it easily. The pieces are mostly flat on 2 sides, so it doesn’t roll around when they (or I) drop it on the floor.
VeRUS has been in business for almost 30 years and has never had a recall, so you know this is a good food.
If you go to their website (which has a lot of great info, including a vendor map!), you’ll be able to fill out a contact form. The VP will email you, start a discussion about your dog, and make a suggestion on which of their foods to try. Then they’ll send you free samples. Free! A couple of little sample bags – about a cup of food in each. If your dog doesn’t like it, then you aren’t out any money.
veruspetfoods.com – scroll down to the bottom of the page & look for Contact Us. It’s worth the few moments!

Tell her to contact VeRUS Pet Foods and ask for a sample of their food. Their VP will email her back (contacting via the VeRUS website – veruspetfoods.com), ask questions, and make suggestions for which of their foods might work best. then they’ll send free samples. It’s a great way to try a food out before investing.
That said, VeRUS has been in business for almost 30 years w/no recalls. They have a top-notch kitchen and use really good ingredients. My dogs have done really, really well on it and when I switched my mom’s dog (small, white dog that may be either a Maltese mix or a Schnauzer mix), to VeRUS, her # of daily poops went down.
I haven’t had any trouble with any of the 3 dogs not wanting to eat this food. In fact, I had to start using bowls for dogs who eat too fast.

I have an 11 y-o Golden. I feed her VeRUS Life Advantage & she acts 5 years younger than she did on her old food. The cool thing w/VeRUS, if you contact them, they’ll answer your questions and help you choose the right food for your dog. They have a nice variety of formulas that are up-to-date on nutritional requirements. You can contact them thru their website at veruspetfoods.com. It won’t cost you anything but a few minutes and they’ll send you free samples.

OR! You can go buy some FOOD GRADE DE powder & try dusting your dog with this (put it in a sock & pat or rub it on your dog).
My dogs were really itchy this summer – worse than normal. The DE powder works.
I ALSO fed my dogs VeRUS Opticoat which is made using Menhaden fish – a wild-caught fish that’s high in Omega-3s. This combination knocked out the itchies in my dogs.

I forgot to mention that the VeRUS food I’ve fed my dogs doesn’t stink – the food itself doesn’t stink. Even the formulas with fish don’t smell like fishy dog food – it smells like real, still-alive fish, even at the bottom of the bag. The food I’m feeding now, Life Advantage, has no scent that I can smell. Most dog food smells like ground up, cooked up dead things. VeRUS doesn’t stink.

I really, really like VeRUS. I tried Victor this summer because they’re made locally, but my dogs didn’t like it as well & t smelled like dog food. VeRUS doesn’t smell like dog food. Their Opticoat & Cold Water Fish Formulas smell like fresh, live fish – even at the bottom of the bag. Their website is veruspetfoods.com. There is a TON of great information on all of their food formulas & you can contact them & ask questions. They’ll also send you free samples.

VeRUS – hands down. I have been feeding VeRUS for more than a year and my dogs are seriously happy & healthy. They love it. I have 2 dogs (one big, one little). My mom’s dog has been staying with me for a few months while my mom heals from an injury. Her dog (Greta) was eating Purina’s grain free when she got here in August. She was pooping 4 times a day. I switched her over to VeRUS when I ran out of her food. Now she poops twice a day. Poops are consistently bigger & firmer, too. I had to take Greta to the vet today for an ear infection. He commented on her overall health & weight – he was happily surprised – and asked what she’s eating. When I told him, he was also happily surprised to find out that VeRUS doesn’t stink like regular dog foods. It actually doesn’t have a discernible smell. The formulas with fish in it smells really fresh too.
You might have to order VeRUS (unless you live in the Maryland area). PetFlow will offer auto-ship so you won’t ever run out.

If his breath got icky after switching to Diamond Naturals, I’d definitely find something else. I feed mine VeRUS Life Advantage and don’t have any trouble with stinky breath (and I have an 11 y-o Golden). Even when I fed VeRUS’ Opticoat made w/fish, my dogs didn’t have stinky breath. VeRUS will send you free samples if you contact them. Tell them what you’re experiencing and they’ll recommend a formula or two for your dog & send free samples. They’re really good at answering questions, too. They’re are veruspetfoods.com.

I tried Victor because it’s made locally (well, 2 counties over). I actually called them and asked if they’d ever had a recall before trying it – they haven’t. With that being said, I wasn’t impressed. The food smelled like dog food – i.e. yuck. My dogs didn’t like it either. It was a VERY short break (i.e. I bought a 5 pound bag & didn’t use all of it) in feeding VeRUS dog food. VeRUS has never had a recall, either. When I contacted them, they sent me free samples! Nice samples! My dogs really, really like this food – think Happy Feet when I set it down for them! And IT DOESN’T SMELL LIKE DOG FOOD! The formulas that utilize fish smell like fresh (live) fish all the way to the bottom of the bag. I currently feed their LifeAdvantage formula & it has no discernible smell.
VeRUS has 2 puppy food formulas, one for puppies that will grow to be less than 60 lbs, and a large breed formula. Then, as your puppy becomes a grown-up, you can easily switch to another formula for adult dogs – they have several options. The pricing for this food is very good for a premium dog food, and the results are noticeable. My dogs poop more efficiently with VeRUS. I have been fostering my mom’s dog for 3 months & have switched her to VeRUS (the dog, not my mom – LOL). The dog went from 4 poops a day w/lot of little kernels to 2 poops a day w/no little pieces. This is significant progress.
    Enjoy your puppy!!

Gerard F – check out VeRUS Pet Foods. They have a puppy food and a large breed puppy food. Then, as your puppy grows, you can move on to one of their other formulas. Here is the nutrient analysis for their large breed puppy formula:
rotein (min) 23% Fat (min) 15% Fiber (max) 4% Moisture (max) 10% Calcium (min) 0.9% Phosphorus (min)0.8% Omega 3 fatty acids (min)2.0%* Omega 6 fatty acids (min) 4.2%* Glucosamine 422 mg/kg* Chondroitin Sulfate 300 mg/kg* Probiotic Activity (min) 3 mil CFU/gram*
If you contact them, they will answer your questions and send free samples.
VeRUS is a 4 star here, tho I don’t know why. They’ve never had a recall in almost 30 years. They’re a small company that uses organic &/or free-range protein sources. They keep current on nutritional requirements. You might want to check them out.

I don’t remember where I read it but when I did it was like a light came on. And that food was so nasty that is stunk up my truck for more than a week – and the opened bag was in there for less than a day! Even if the moldy stuff simply made her sick enough to compromise her immune system, it was a significant factor in the overall result.

    PitLuv –
That’s great info on the different types of yeast, and likely why the products from Dermagic work, since they are shampoos and lotions.
I’m convinced my golden ended up with her yeast because of moldy food when I was feeding 4Health.
I know the itchiness in my dogs was a series of factors, not just one thing, therefore, it took more than one thing to stop the scratching!

FYI – I fed 4Health before I started w/VeRUS & was not happy w/it. I tried Victor as it is made locally but after feeding VeRUS & knowing how fresh it smells, I couldn’t cope with the smell of Victor. (Victor smells like your basic dog food, VeRUS either smells like fresh fish – in their fish formulas – or it doesn’t really have a scent). My dogs didn’t like Victor, either.
I haven’t tried Whole Earth Farms or Taste of the Wild but Taste/Wild has had some recall problems. VeRUS & Victor have never had a recall.

    Hi Kristen,
VeRUS can be purchased on line. I order it from PetFlow & get the automatic delivery. I powder my girl’s ears when she gets itchy with the idea that it’ll attack ear mites. You can also put a little (a couple of drops) or olive oil in your dog’s ears to smother ear mites. I tried spraying a vinegar mixture on Emma’s paws, tail area, & ‘arm pits’ when she was seriously yeasty, but she would just lick it off & give me dirty looks. The DERMagic has helped a bunch.

Contact VeRUS pet foods. They’ll send you samples that are awesome and they’ll answer any questions you might have. I’ve been feeding VeRUS for a while and my dogs are happy, healthy, and don’t poop nearly as much as they used to. I switched my mom’s dog to this food and she has turned into a much more efficient (fewer poops, better color, better size) pooping machine than when she first arrived.

I’m poor so I didn’t ask the vet for a skin scrape. I did research and discovered that yes, my pretty girl dog was yeasty, and yes, there is help. If you go to the DERMagic website, they have a TON of great info on skin conditions. They also have a great product (we’ve used it on our Golden and it works so well!). Finally, get some FOOD GRADE DE powder & powder your dog with this. It’s cheap and lasts forever, but be sure to get FOOD GRADE. It also isn’t harmful.

I can’t imagine the misery involved in a dog w/bladder/kidney stones. My husband gets them frequently and he’s always miserable.
We haven’t ever had a dog that got UTIs/stones. My mom’s dog ended up with crystals last year and she had to improve the quality of her dog’s food (among other things). A great way to get some good advice and some free samples of a fantastic dog food is to contact VeRUS. The food is great – it’s 4 stars here, but they’ve never had a recall in almost 30 years – and when you contact them with questions, a live human will answer you with good info AND they’ll send you free samples. It won’t cost you anything to ask them for help. Depending on where you live, you might be able to get the food locally. If not, you can order (I use PetFlow.com). No prescription needed.

Kristen, I have a Golden who will be 12 in January. We went for about a year battling similar issues to yours – tho not as bad. She was itchy, itchy, ITCHY. The first thing I did that made a HUGE difference was that I made – the first TRUE step in the right direction – was that I switched to VeRUS dog food. When I contact them, I had a great conversation with their VP about the issues we were facing and how to tackle them. She (Krystle) recommended their Opticoat formula which uses a wild-caught fish, doesn’t have gluten, and has complex carbs so the blood sugar doesn’t go up & doesn’t feed the yeast. All of the VeRUS formulas use organic or free range meats. The Opticoat didn’t have a nasty smell – it smells like fresh-caught fish all the way to the bottom of the bag. They also have a nifty freeze-dried live probiotic. (Pretty sure I messed up the order there, but if you go to their website, you can read all about it.) VeRUS will send you free samples & Krystle will email you if you contact them.
Second thing I did was to dust my Golden with FOOD GRADE DE powder to kill the invisible little buggers that were part of her itching problem. I’m still on the first cupful of the DE powder & I’ve been using it for like 6 months. It’s cheap & works really fast.
Third was a product called DERMagic – shampoo, conditioner, lotion.
We now have a beautiful, perfect, non-itchy, non-stinky, non-yeasty Golden who acts HALF her age. She runs, she’s enthusiastic, and she smells really good. And she can’t wait to eat. She loves her food.
VeRUS easily falls into your price range. You can order it & get it delivered on schedule if you go to PetFLow.com. If you’re interested in the protein-to-fat-to-carb ratios, the VeRUS website has all the nutritional info you’ll need (but don’t forget about asking for the free samples).
BTW – VeRUS is only 4 Star here but they have never had a recall in almost 30 years. They are a small company out of the northeast (Maryland, I think). Small company, really nice & helpful people.

A lot of times dog foods that use salmon are feeding farm-raised salmon instead of wild-caught. Farm-raised fish – regardless of what kind – are lower in the nutrients you want for your pet. Menhaden fish is a fantastic fish for Omega-3s, etc, is ONLY wild caught, and is the type of fish that breeds like fleas so there’s always a ton of them. Do a google search for Menhaden fish and which companies use it in their food.

Bertha, powder your dog with FOOD GRADE DE powder. Try that for a few days. If it works, your dog has mites.
That being said, go check the VeRUS website for their CANNED food. They have flavors with duck, lamb, fish, and beef liver. VeRUS has some fantastic dry foods, too. My dogs were uber itchy last year. VeRUS cold water fish formula took care of 65% of their itchiness. The balance was cured by DE powder. Anyway, the VeRUS foods come in small kibble pieces so it is GREAT for small doggies!!

VeRUS has a cold water fish formula with Menhaden fish as the base.
Here is the ingredient list: Salmon, Menhaden Fish Meal, Lentils, Chickpeas, Green Peas, Barley, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), Tapioca, Herring, Herring Meal, Yams, Natural Flavors, Menhaden Fish Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), Flaxseed, Chicory Extract, Dried Cranberry, Tomato Pomace, Dried Carrots, Kelp, Dried Pumpkin, Dried Pediococcus acidilactici Fermentation Product, Salt, Vitamin E Supplement, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of Vitamin C), Niacin Supplement, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate, L-Carnitine, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Choline Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Zinc Proteinate, Betaine Anhydrous, Iron Proteinate, Selenium Yeast, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Calcium Iodate

As an aside…I thought my dogs were allergic to chicken & beef & all things gluten. Turns out they had mites. You can try dusting your dog with food grade DE powder. If they stop scratching, food isn’t the problem.

VeRUS sends fantastic samples f you want to give them a try.

    Hi Brian –
My mom’s dog eats Pro Plan & does fairly well. However, the food smells disgusting – it smells like old chicken parts & burned feathers. I feed VeRUS Life Advantage to my 2 dogs. It is because VeRUS DOES NOT stink that I notice how bad Pro Plan smells. (I have noticed before that VeRUS doesn’t stink but it’s REALLY evident now that I have a bag of Pro Plan in the house – ICK!) Mom’s dog poops like 4 times a day. My dogs poop 1 or 2 times a day. I have a rescue that is about the same size as Mom’s dog – I can promise you these it a marked difference in what is coming out of each dog – as much of as difference as what’s going in. VeRUS is 4 star food here. They have never had a recall and they have excellent customer communications. Do a web search for them & check out the website, there’s a lot of great info there.

You want to look for meat – real meat, not by-products. Stuff like chicken meal or fish meal is also good as it’s a dried/ground/powdery form of the actual meat product. You want health veggies – not just fillers, and you want to make sure the vitamin/mineral sources are NOT from China. If it’s a fish formula, you probably won’t want a salmon product as the salmon used in dog foods are farm raised instead of the more nutritious ocean-caught. Tip-top premium foods will use organic meat sources & free-range chickens (yes, there are companies out there that do this). AAFCO standards aren’t as useful as they may seem – they’re simply an industry recommendation. You will also want to look into what kind of facilities they use for manufacturing the food. Many premium dog food companies use exceptionally clean facilities that adhere to higher standards like EU Certifications. Lastly, you’d want to avoid foods that are high in GMO’s. Look are websites. I have a list of some great companies with great websites that give a lot of info (I’ve done projects on dog foods, etc) if you’re interested. Just PM me.

My Golden has done the same thing this summer. Food Grade DE Powder will help with the ears & paws. If your dog has rust colored spots between her/his toes, it might be yeast. I got curious and looked into this. They are pretty vague with “Antioxidants, B Vitamins, and Arginine to Support a Dog’s Cognitive Health Throughout Adulthood” – no doubt partly due to proprietary issues. I looked up Arginine and found it is used for humans for a variety of things like preventing tooth decay, treatment of peripheral neuropathy, and treatment of herpes simplex. The neuropathy is the only thing for arginine that gets close to brain function.
“DHA” & “EPA” are compounds in fish oil that is beneficial for brain function (Omega 6, and Omega 3 fatty acids).
When you look a little closer, you find out they’re using salmon for their fish oil source which sounds great but isn’t as good as it could be. Most of the salmon used in dog food production is farm-raised salmon and isn’t as high in Omega-3’s as it would be if wild caught. Also, there are other wild caught fish that higher in Omega-3’s than salmon – for example, Menhaden fish, which is a small, cold water fish that is very high in the essential fatty acids needed for healthy brain function. **One great thing about Menhaden fish is that they breed like fleas so it’s nearly impossible to over fish them, unlike salmon.**
VeRUS (my personal favorite dog food) has 2 formulas that utilize Menhanden Fish as their base. You can get samples of this food from VeRUS if you contact them & ask (which is how I got started feeding it.)

    Hi Lazaro,
I’ve had similar issues with my dogs. I went to VeRUS Pet Foods, filled out their contact form & settled on their Advanced Opticoat formula after they sent me some really nice samples. I DID discover one of my dogs had a yeast over-growth, likely due to the food I was feeding before VeRUS (THAT food was horribly moldy). I have also tackled the yeast topically, but the Opticoat helped out a LOT.
VeRUS was given a 4 star rating here a few years ago. They have never had a food recall and their people stay on top of nutritional requirements. They are made in the US & don’t use rendered meat or Chinese products.
BTW – the Opticoat is a fish-based formula.
Do a search for VeRUS and get to their website easily. There is a lot of info there. Also, if you have additional questions, fill out the contact form and a human will email you back. Good stuff, good people.

    Hi Lauren,
Go to the VeRUS website, fill out the form and tell them you are having issues & what kind. They will write back, probably ask questions and suggest which of their foods is most likely to help. This is a small company started by a guy who used to be in nuclear energy. They are smart people who stay up to date with nutritional requirements and they use quality ingredients. They even make their food in a facility that exceeds requirements for human food production. Asking a few questions can only result in answers, you’ll get some help, and it won’t cost you a thing.
BTW – my rescue mutt has a seriously sensitive tummy. When I switched her to VeRUS, she stopped eating grass and doesn’t get pukey unless my husband feeds her something from his plate.

HoundMusic – I’m so glad! I have been so pleased with this food and I love telling others about it! BTW – it comes vacuum-packed & it stays fresh-smelling all the way to the end of the bag!

Karen C – I have two suggestions for you & your itchy pup.
    1) my 2 dogs were ITCHY. I started looking for a good quality dog food I could afford. I came across VeRUS pet food on a list of 15 companies that had never had a recall. I got on the VeRUS website & read everything I could & I contacted them to see which of their foods they would recommend for my dogs. I got a live person emailing me back, asking good, sensible questions. They sent me samples of 2 types of food – we’re talking a couple of bags of these 2 types & each bag had at least a cup of kibble in it. I chose the Advanced Opticoat formula and have fed that to my dogs for several months. I noticed a HUGE/positive difference in their overall health and their itching went completely away… until about a month ago.
That brings me to suggestion #2
    2) If your dog smells a little funny or has russet-colored paws (between the toes) or other patches, do a search for yeast remedies. You dog can get a yeast over-growth from poor quality/moldy dog food. If your dog is doing a lot of face rubbing/scratching, go get some food grade DE powder, put it in a sock, & powder your dogs with it. This will get rid of mites & kill fleas. This has cured the August itchies on my dogs.
BTW – I recently switched to the 2nd of the 2 foods recommended by VeRUS – their Life Advantage formula. I did this because my little dog was beginning to turn her picky little nose up. She loves the Life Advantage and they have not resumed itching.
If the DE powder doesn’t help, let me know, I might have another suggestion for the itchy dogs.

My dogs were having issues with the food I was feeding them so I switched to homemade food – which was good until I didn’t have the time to do it anymore. I looked around & did lots of research. I settled on VeRUS. Their itchiness & overall health improved greatly w/o digestive issues. They have a large breed puppy food and they publish their ingredient list & nutritional profiles on the website. If you have questions, they actually take the time to answer them. If you contact them, they’ll send free samples. I get my VeRUS food via PetFlow which will give a discount if you auto-ship. It’s very good dog food and the cost is in line or less than some of the other premium foods. You can find them by searching for VeRUS pet foods.

    VeRUS
They have a variety of foods for all stages of a dog’s life AND every formula has freeze-dried live probiotics to help with digestions.
I have been feeding my dogs VeRUS for almost a year now & they have THRIVED on it. If you do a google search for VeRUS Pet Foods and go to their website, you’ll get a lot of great information on why the company was started and why they use the ingredients they use. Then you can fill out a contact form & they’ll email you to find out more about your new pup, then they’ll send you FREE samples! Nice samples! THEN, when you’ve figured out how wonderful this food is, you can go to PetFlow & if you order it on auto-delivery, I think you get a discount.
Warning – this food LOOKS like it’s expensive, but truly it isn’t. You don’t have to feed as much and your dog will use it more efficiently than foods with a lower price tag.
These people are very nice, very helpful, and they put out a great product.

I feed VeRUS Cold Water Fish. I checked the pricing recently and found it to be equal to or less than other premium foods. If you order from PetFlow and get auto-ship, I think you get a discount. I switched to VeRUS from 4Health and have had no regrets. They have never had a recall and the food comes vacuum packed so you can tell if it has been punctured or opened. It smells fresh all the way to the bottom of the bag. If you contact them (go to their website, fill out the form) they’ll reply and send free samples. Very nice, personable people.

Check out VeRUS canned food & dry food. Here is their chcken & brown rice:
    Protein (min) 8%
    Fat (min) 5%
    Fiber (max) 2%
    Moisture (max) 78%
    Ash (max) 1.55%

    1279 kcals/kg = 470 kcals/can

    And their Life Virtue Dry:
Protein (min) 24% Fat (min) 15% Fiber (max) 3.5% Moisture (max) 10% Omega 3 fatty acids (min) 2.0%* Omega 6 fatty acids (min) 4.2%* Probiotic Activity (min) 3 mil CFU/gram*

If you contact them, they’ll email you back & send dry food samples (maybe canned, too, I don’t know). I use this food because it’s never been recalled AND because a real person emailed me to discuss my dog’s issues.
