Duke The BoxerMember
Thank you very much HDM. I hope your hounds are doing well.
Duke The BoxerMemberHello yes the formula that I gave you guys is the formula that you can use to take any food and check out to see if it is too much calcium for a LBP which is a maximum of 3.5gs/1000kcal. All of the foods that are on HDM’s list are appropriate for our puppies. I had very good success with wellness core puppy and earthborn coastal catch. Duke is now a year old and is in excellent condition due to HDM’s list.
February 18, 2014 at 11:25 am in reply to: Large and Giant Breed Puppy Nutrition #33975 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberCareful sharon because the way HDM calculated the percentages of the calcium is from usuing this formula
1)Multiply calcium% by 1000g. That gives you the grams of calcium/kg
2)Divide the grams of calcium/kg by the kcal/kg for the food. That gives you the grams of calcium/kcal.
3)Multiply the grams of calcium/kcal by 1000/1000. That gives you grams of calcium/1000kcal.Ive calculated food that say the max calcium is 1.5% but after the calculations the food was over the 3.5g of calcium per 1000kcal
January 25, 2014 at 8:06 pm in reply to: High Protein, Low Fat and Carbs Dry Food List #32734 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberI was partially kidding hahah my next bag will probably be a chicken based protein and im looking at Timber wolf Platinum, Pinnacle Peak Protein, Victor Ultra Pro, Dr Tims Kinesis (im not sure if i want to try the GF or use the grain inclusive again as Duke did alright on the grain inclusive Kinesis) and the new Farmina line if it comes out in time. Any input? Hahah any feedback is nice to hear even though every dog is different it is nice to hear your ladies inputs.
January 24, 2014 at 7:20 pm in reply to: High Protein, Low Fat and Carbs Dry Food List #32668 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberSo a little update here.. I went ahead and purchased the B2B Open Range formula which is the red meat formula. Duke has been doing great on the food. So far his stools have been the most firm they have been since he was on nutrisource chicken and rice large breed formula. Im very happy with the ratio of 71% animal proteins and 29% fruits and plant proteins, as it is a dog food with a good amount of animal protein (not the most animal based protein but good enough). Duke absolutely loves the flavor of the dog food which i suspect has to due with all the organs in the dog food. I definitely recommend anyone looking for a high protein and low carb dry kibble to really consider B2B Open Range.
Now for the next bag of dog food?! Who knows?! So many to choose from hahaha.January 2, 2014 at 7:21 pm in reply to: High Protein, Low Fat and Carbs Dry Food List #30947 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberIf Farmina does not get released on chewy in time i will definitely be going with the back 2 basics formulas. I have not decided yet though what is the next protein i want Duke to try. I have been talking to Farmina on facebook and they said the dog foods should be around the same price as fromm for their higher protein grain free formulas, and then around $55-60 for the grain inclusive formula which still has 35% protein.
Duke The BoxerMemberohh gotcha okay yeah makes more sense. IM such a fool i should have known that haha But Patty comin in clutch as always 😀
Duke The BoxerMemberOther way around. 2 calories of protein to 1 calorie of fat if I understand Patty correctly. I know she has told me before that for moderate amount of fat in the food it is if the fat is half the % of protein. So if the protein % is 42% and the fat % is 21% then that is half the amount of protein and a moderate amount of fat.
December 29, 2013 at 12:48 pm in reply to: High Protein, Low Fat and Carbs Dry Food List #30759 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberHahaha sorry Patty my phone autocorrects it haha. But thank you for the response. B2B looks interesting tho. I like the ingredients and how they include a lot of organs from animals. I’m trying to look for more foods with high % of animal protein. That’s why farmina, timberwolf Platinum, and B2B all look really good. Idk which to choose next!
December 29, 2013 at 2:40 am in reply to: High Protein, Low Fat and Carbs Dry Food List #30742 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberHey party just and Great Dane mom just checking back in. Duke is doing great. 🙂 but I recently came across the brand Back to Basics and it looked like a very good brand. Their high protein line has a min of 38% protein and they are rated 5 stars from Mike. Have you guys tried this line? That question goes to anyone who had tried Back to Basics.
December 22, 2013 at 7:22 pm in reply to: High Protein, Low Fat and Carbs Dry Food List #30417 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberYeah I run on the last part of the walk. And I run and play fetch with him in my yard often. I have siblings who also play with him outside. I really want to try brothers complete!
December 22, 2013 at 11:17 am in reply to: High Protein, Low Fat and Carbs Dry Food List #30340 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberThank you very much patty. I was looking into natures logic since the brothers conplete is out of my price range. So if I walk my dog a mile or two everyday he should be ae to handle the higher fat?
December 22, 2013 at 3:49 am in reply to: High Protein, Low Fat and Carbs Dry Food List #30308 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberPatty have you heard of farmina? I know their formula is not suitable for lbp but i like the protein % but I need your help to get the ratios of fat to protein.
http://usa.farmina.com/?q=content/product/grain-free-chicken-recipe-0December 22, 2013 at 2:55 am in reply to: High Protein, Low Fat and Carbs Dry Food List #30306 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberI’m sorry patty I knew that I wasn’t very educated on the subject and would get corrected. Can you tell me how to get the dry matter protein. And 50% fat to protein ratio? Or how does that work. Again sorry for being such a noob.
December 21, 2013 at 8:05 pm in reply to: High Protein, Low Fat and Carbs Dry Food List #30299 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberPlease share any food you have heard of or have had good results with. The more people share their experience the more everyone can benefit. 😀 so so far though duke is doing amazing on the coastal catch which also has 32% protein and i forgot to add to the list.
Duke The BoxerMemberNo I don’t add any water to the food. Just some omega 3 supplement and the probiotic and enzyme. The thing is he doesn’t throw up immediately. It will be like 1-2 hours later. And it is undigested food. I do have cider vinegar at the house so I will try that.
Duke The BoxerMemberThank you. What do you think could be the problem with duke throwing up? A local natural pet store recommended coconut oil in his food. I give him enzymes and probiotics every means so idk
Duke The BoxerMemberpatty have you tried this brand or have heard about it? Obviously it is not one of the foods on HDM’s list but some of their formulas looks pretty good. i like how this formula has a good amount of glucosamine in it. please let me know your consideration.
http://www.midamericapetfood.com/victordogfood/joint_health.htmlPS
I should also add that Duke is doing good on Coastal Catch but he is still having random regurgitation of his food a couple hours after eating it. It was happening towards the end of the wellness core bag and im still transitioning with the wellness core and the CC. Please if any one if you ladies not just patty can please maybe give their 2 cents to come to some leads for figuring out why he is doing this. he is going to the vet tomorrow to get reweighed for his demodex medicine and i will mention it to the doctor.Duke The BoxerMemberYeah the petcurean formula that I saw on their website the large breed formula I calculated at 3.7g /1000kcal.
Duke The BoxerMember^^ patty speaks the truth. if i left duke with the bag of coastal catch open for him i think he would eat it all in one sitting haha. But as long as the dogs dont have a crazy amount of rib showing through the skin then i believe they are at a healthy weight. A dogs natural state is to be fasting, HDM told me this and so did my vet.
Duke The BoxerMemberYup and i thought i was overwhelmed when i started to look for the correct puppy food. Hahaha i have a couple that i want to try though orijen,eb, pet pantry, dr tim grain free, and some NV formulas. ugh but there is so many others and so many more that i want to learn about. Also some of the fromm formulas.
Duke The BoxerMemberDamn patty the ME is 3750 so it equates to 3.7333 g per 1000 kcal. So it Is barrely too much -.-
December 10, 2013 at 11:13 pm in reply to: Large and Giant Breed Puppy Nutrition #29907 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberheheh good point 😀 but yeah it has its perks living in such a metropolitan city like Miami. A lot of negatives though -_-
December 10, 2013 at 10:34 pm in reply to: Large and Giant Breed Puppy Nutrition #29905 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberRegardless Duke is getting EB Coastal Catch on thursday so we are both super excited 😀 unfortunately i just found a local pet store that carries all the brands that petsmart doesnt. It is a holistic natural k9 store and they have EB in stock for 1-2$ more than online so its perfect that i can pick up a bag locally and i dont mind helping local business
December 10, 2013 at 10:32 pm in reply to: Large and Giant Breed Puppy Nutrition #29904 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberHey Patty i saw your post on the review and i totally rememeber your formula but some of their recipes dont have the metabolizable energy on the analysis. I am emailing the owner of the company now. He has been very open answering all my questions so im sure he will let me know in the morning. But the reason i think HDM didnt include it in her list is because the new recipe has not been reviewed by Mike yet so it failed the requirement of being at least 4 stars. When i was talking to the representative today that got me in contact with the owner, she said that the new grain free salmon recipe came out after the buffalo and is their newest formula.
Duke The BoxerMemberi got the email back and the levels is 1.4% calcium, .95% phosphorous, Magnesium .20% for the salmon and sweet potato. I know your dog cant have potato though FreeHoldHound
Duke The BoxerMemberPatty so im looking more into Pet Pantry and currently am getting in contact with the owner so he can tell me the calcium levels of their salmon formula. The link is below. Unfortunately their buffalo and duck formula that is on HDM’s list is out of stock -_-
http://www.feedyourpets.com/product/TPP008.htmlDuke The BoxerMemberThank you so much patty. I feel so foolish I meant to post this I’m the large breed thread. -.- duke had a reaction to the nv rabbit but ugh it’s so difficult and frustrating trying to specifically narrow it down to what ingredients he is allergic to. I want to try the pet pantry buffalo and duck formula because it looks good on paper. I want to find foods with as little fillers and plant protein in it. I want as much meat protein as possible.
Duke The BoxerMemberi just ordered the costal catch from earthborn. i will definitely be reporting back to you guys and girls on how duke reacts and how i feel like he is doing. Duke is getting near the last couple months where he needs to have a controlled amount of calcium. He is 7 months going on 8 soon. There have been a couple foods thats i have been wanting to try but have been too high in calcium like the orijen line, the earthborn primitive, wellness core large breed formula and a couple others. i wish there was a way to send private messages here cuz patty and rescuedanemom i would love to hear more of the foods that you have liked and disliked regardless of calcium
Duke The BoxerMemberkms i know you didnt want to try another chicken based food but id really recommend trying nutrisource large breed chicken and rice. duke went from straight diarrhea to firm stools within the next day of going to nutrisource. Its not something that i stayed with nor do you have to stay with it but maybe it will help stabilize his stomach and firm his stools enough to get a regular routine. just a thought
Duke The BoxerMemberi would love to feed duke the annamaet aqualuk formula but its so expensive for a college student like me -_- i do eventually want to try the salcha but i want to try another protein thats not chicken for dukes next bag. i will probably either get one of the earthborn formulas or the pet pantry food. In all honesty i just want a food that is rich in meat protein and not so much the fillers and plant proteins.
Duke The BoxerMemberyup no real preference to grains cuz he did super well on the chicken and rice formula of nutrisource and the dr tims so he is good with grains. i will definitely look into the carn4 duck formula. I really would love to feed duke annamaet but they are pricey -_-
Duke The BoxerMemberHey patty im sorry to bother you but i have been looking at the list over and over and i cant decide what to get. I wanted to switch from chicken and turkey as that has been his last 2 foods and i believe he is allergic to turkey since his nose and feed are pink always. I was looking at the pet pantry buffalo and duck dog food. also i was looking at zignature trout meal and also i was looking at the earthborn meadow feast and costal catch. Can you please maybe recommend preferably a beef or fish based dog food? I would love you forever 😀 and this isnt specific to Patty anyone who is reading this and has a large breed dog please chime in what food you have used that isnt chicken based
Duke The BoxerMemberHmm i definitey think that could be the issue. At night i usually watch him eat and make him slow down and swallow his food every little bit. In the morning my mother feeds him early and she doesnt watch him and if hes not watched Duke will devour the food within 5 minutes
Duke The BoxerMemberhey Patty, Duke is not 7 months and 51 pounds! So excited. I started to notiece some weird patches and i took him to the vent and it turned up to be demodetic mange or demodex. After he went on the medicine for the mange thats when he gained the 8 pounds in 3 1/2 weeks. But recently sometimes in the mornings he will throw up some or all of his food. It is not everyday or even every other day so thats why its confusing me.
Any thoughts? He is transitioning into wellness core puppy which he had been on before and never had these problems. Could it be food related?Duke The BoxerMemberNope I haven’t tried. I will definitely look for them. But I guess you get them local? I’m thinking maybe through hare today gone tomorrow.
Duke The BoxerMemberPatty can you recommend me a bone for duke. He is a heavy chewer and loves rope toys. But I want to give him bones except I’m worried about one of his teeth fracturing. Please help.
Duke The BoxerMemberDammit patty. -.- as soon as I started to mix in some nutri source with the rabbit his stools got better. This makes me super sad as duke other than the loose stools did amazing on nv rabbit.
Duke The BoxerMemberyeah i rotate wellness core puppy. In my rotation is Dr Tim’s Grain Inclusive, Wellness Core Puppy, Earthborn Costal Catch and my final food that i was rotatin was the nv rabbit but i need to change it out for another food since duke didnt do well on it. But every dog is different so maybe your dog will do much better than duke. Also the Wellness core is turkey and chicken.
Duke The BoxerMemberoh and kms i had a 30 lb bag or 26 or whatever nv is of the rabbit and duke never firmed up and i finished the whole bag
Duke The BoxerMemberkms i dont mean to discourage you but my dog never had firm stools on the nv rabbit. I talked to many vets and people and they all said that only 1 time they saw a case where the dog did well on rabbit as the protein and he was a wolfdog so yeah. Now that duke is on chicken and turkey his stools are perfect. I would recommend Wellness core puppy
Duke The BoxerMemberThank you patty. You are so helpful. Also EPA was the other acid I was trying to remember but couldn’t haha.
Duke The BoxerMemberI’m reviving this thread. So does anyone know how much dha is enough to make a difference? I have a omega supplement that has some dha in it also. I’m just wondering cuz my wellness core puppy food came I today and I was wondering how much dha is like the minimum that will actually make a difference. I heard dha is good for cognitive development also.
November 14, 2013 at 10:22 pm in reply to: Large and Giant Breed Puppy Nutrition #28449 Report AbuseDuke The BoxerMemberKms I would order a small bag of the rabbit and see how your dog handles it because my puppy did not react well to the rabbit at all. His stools were dry soft but he did do poo a lot less. If your dog has no intolerances to rabbit as the protein then I would highly recommend it!
Duke The BoxerMemberExactly RDM that is one of the best lessons ive learned from having this puppy. You have to have to do your own trial and error with most everything. But having some good direction from others more knowledgeable is great 😀
Duke The BoxerMemberUnfortunately rescue Dane mom I also tried the dr langers probiotic but it didn’t do anything for duke. Within a day or two of giving him the terra biota his stools firmed up more. Also he stopped having room clearing gas. But with dogs it’s just like humans some medicine and supplements work better than others.
Duke The BoxerMemberAlso for kms I want to recommend you a very good probiotic that I have been giving duke for a little and it really has helped with his stools, skin, and he barely has has anymore and if he does it doesn’t smell bad at all. The probiotic I’m giving him is the Biostareq Terra Biota K9. Pretty cheap and I researched and talked to their formulator directly and really after all the information I wouldn’t even consider another probiotic. The digestive enzyme I’m giving him is the Swanson Plant based digestive enzymes. I give him the probiotic once a day ever other day. The enzyme is every meal or if you wanted I give him the digestive enzyme on the meal where I feed him more than in the morning. Sorry for the double wall of text. I’m just pretty passionate about dr Tim’s and the Biostareq probiotic.
Duke The BoxerMemberWell dr Tim’s actually says to feed a whole cup less than what was recommended on the nv. I’m feeding him now like 2 1/4 cups a day divided into 2 meals. Supposedly for his weight which is 42 pounds he should be getting like 2 cups a day. On NV when he was 30 pounds he was already getting 3 cups a day. I know this is because dr Tim’s is higher per kibble than the nv so it’s convinient that you can feed him less but still be more. Duke has really been doing well on the dr Tim’s. Also recommend nutri source large breed puppy for anyone who has a puppy with soft stools. Nutri source really helped me firm his stools up after he was having intolerances to rabbit. If you have any other questions let me know! Even more so if you have very specific questions about where dr Tim’s sources his proteins and such then I would suggest emailing dr Tim directly. He is extremely friendly and helpful and answered my like 6 emails pretty quickly hahaha
Duke The BoxerMemberI highly recommend dr Tim’s kinesis grain inclusive
Duke The BoxerMemberI know duke was having problems on the NV Rabbit and when I started to mix in nutri source large breed his stools were completely firm. Almost too firm for my liking.
