No weezerweeks, Hannah’s thyroid levels are tested every 6 months. I’m just too lazy to go to the vet every month for her Soloxine so I request 90 day supply at a time. I do the same for our human meds also whenever possible. For us humans, I’d have to live at CVS.

Thanks weezerweeks, I won’t be needing any for awhile because I picked up Hannah’s 90 day supply this past Friday. Next time I talk to her vet I’ll talk to her about the brand Soloxine.

Not to worry weezerweeks. I just picked up Soloxine on Friday from Hannah’s vet. Brand name as she doesn’t carry the generic. I also never go with generic brands when it comes to the girls. Funny thing is I have no issues with generic for myself. Hmmmmmm? Could it be that their health is paramount in my thinking to mine? Guess so. Also, most insurance companies at this point only want to pay for generic with human medications. Canine insurance has no problem paying for brand names.

I should have checked to make sure Drs Fostersmith actually had it in stock. Sorry about that.

Sorry weezer, I only get the brand and that’s from my vet. Wish I could help. Has you vet switched to carrying the generic?

EDIT: Just found this for you but I would really urge you to call them and speak to someone in customer service. I’m not a fan of purchasing meds on line but this is a reputable site.

When purchasing medications for any of my dogs, I only feel safe purchasing them from the veterinarian. Of course, if a medication has to be compounded or is a “human medication” then the prescription is called in by my vets office either to my local CVS or the local compounding pharmacy.

As discovered many times over the years and seen on the news, human meds purchased on line are not necessarily what one thinks they are. They can be out of date, they can be packaged to look exactly like the original with some very minor discrepancy on the box, the meds themselves can be out of date or completely expired but the packaging says otherwise, the meds could have been illegally made in some foreign country. The same would be true for animal medications sold on the web as there are very little, if any, regulations. It’s only when there is illness or death that the FDA bothers to investigate said companies and meds and that can take years while others continue to order.

I’m not against purchasing items on the web, I’m a true Amazon junky, but I do not buy my medications nor my dogs medications on line. And as mentioned above, if there is a problem i.e. illness and/or death, your vet and the company you think is supposedly manufacturing those meds are not responsible for any monetary claims. You basically have no recourse. There are a lot of areas that one can save money on, medications should not be one of them.

I have three toy dogs. Maltese, Maltipoo and a Yorkipoo. I have been feeding them commercial raw frozen diets for the past 4 years and are all doing phenomenally well. I feed twice a day each getting between 2.5 & 3 % of their weight broken up into two meals. I use a cheap digital kitchen scale that I bought on Amazon. For treats I give them bits of fruits and veggies. No pits or seeds in anything, please. I don’t feed any grains, soy, corn, potatoes, rice or poultry (one of my girls is intolerant of all fowl). I feed all three high protein, moderate to high quality fats and low carbs. Oh, for size comparison, Maltese weighs 7.3 lbs., Maltipoo weighs 6 lbs. and my Yorkipoo weighs 5 lbs. Keep in mind that when you feed commercial frozen raws though initially they may seem expensive, you feed less than when feeding kibble. My soon to be 16 years old Maltese acts like she’s more like 6 or 7 years old. The other two are 6 years old and think they are still 2 year olds and act like it too. Which is a good thing. Also keep in mind the savings that you get also from not being at the vet everytime you turn around with some ailment or other. My two 6 year olds go once a year for physicals and my almost 16 year old goes every 6 months for senior blood work and physicals.

Hi C4D. I figured that was what your concern was. I don’t think raw is an issue but if it will make you feel better than feed canned but please don’t forget that canned is not without it’s own bacterial issues. As to anti-inflammatory supplements I would look into feeding anti-inflammatory fruits and veggies. Just google them. I’ve never had any luck with turmeric or golden paste made with turmeric for any of my girls including myself. Also, don’t forget to avoid any and all pro-inflammatory ingredients. Google that also.

Hi C4D. I’ve done it in the past with no issues, never even occurred to me that there would be an issue. With that said, we all know that all dogs are different. Was the tooth extraction because of an infection or a cracked tooth? Was it a molar or a tooth? It would also depend, I think, on how long your dog has been a raw fed dog, meaning that his gut/immune system would be in peak performance. If you’re at all worried and you feed on occasion a quality canned food, then you might just want to do that for the first couple of days or so after extraction. Anyway, just my opinion.

Samantha F. You didn’t mention what the ingredients are in the “different type of dry cookie”. Please check out the ingredients thoroughly as it may very well be something in the cookie. Let us know if maybe the cookie has some type of poultry fat in it. Also could be the binder in the cookie itself. Some sort of grain or starch.

A complete and balanced raw diet. Either home prepared or feed as I do and that is commercial raw frozen formulas. I feed a few different ones. I rotate brands and proteins. One of my girls has a tumor in her bladder and a mass on the lobe of one of her lungs. Diagnosed 15 months ago and remains asymptomatic.

I have three spayed dogs. There has never been even the slightest disagreement amongst the three. They are each others BFF’s. They pal around together all day long and cuddle up together on the couches and insist on squeezing in on the various dog beds together even though there are several in every room of the house. They chase each other, wrestle (never ever has it turned into a fight), play tug….funny to watch all three playing tug together), chase toys always allowing who ever gets it first to keep it. They don’t steal each other’s food or treats. Two, my younger girls (6 years old next week) also have been playing their version of hide n seek since they were only weeks old. My opinion, and it’s just that, my opinion is that a lot has to do with the energy in your home to begin with. My home is calm and stress free (as much as can be anyway) and the energy has been commented on by a lot of people that come inside our home.

Also, spaying them never caused any differences in them be it metabolism, incontinence, personality or whatever. They remained the same as before the spays. Perhaps not all veterinary surgeons are the same.

Your family, human and fur, are just beautiful. Is there a possibility that you keep both a male and a female?

One more edit: The three girls, two almost 6 years old and one almost 16 years old are the the sweetest most affectionate with each other and even more so with my husband and I. Even if one of us leaves a room for a moment they follow us around. Hubby calls me the Pied Piper. As I was about to say, even if I leave the room for a moment they follow me. If I go out to get the mail or put out the garbage and come back they act like I’ve been gone for months. They’re a huggie kissie little group. Just like their human parents? The three love to snuggle up on us whether we’re sitting reading, watching t.v. or in bed.

cindy q. My three girls have been on commercial raw diets, nothing processed including treats for the past 4 years. I rotate their food with every meal. I don’t mix proteins either. I always have 3 or 4 bags started in the freezer at the same time. Different brands, different proteins.

The reason I had stopped feeding Darwin’s awhile back was they went through a change. They increased the fat, lowered the protein and raised the price. The whole idea did not sit right with me. I recently came across Darwin’s on Amazon with free shipping. Same Darwin’s and ships from Darwin’s facility also. You have to buy it in the variety packages though. You can’t specify just one protein. Since I rotate as frequently as I do and my dogs are accustomed to very high proteins, moderate to high quality fats, and low carbs there has not been an issue with Darwin’s. Actually it has less fat than a lot of the other frozen raws I have in rotation. I was just annoyed of the changes that I mentioned above. Now that I don’t have to pay for shipping it makes it easier to not be so annoyed with the company.

I rotate between brands and the proteins they make with the exception of any fowl as one of my dogs is intolerant of all fowl.

Primal Frozen Raw and I use their freeze dried as treats
Vital Essential Raw and I use their freeze dried tripe as treats
    OC Raw Frozen
    Answer’s Detailed Frozen Raw
    Nature’s Logic Frozen Raw
    Steve’s Frozen Raw
Darwin’s (recently put it back into rotation)

I’m sure there are others I use in rotation but can’t think of them at the moment.

All of the formulas contain turkey in their ingredients. If your dog doesn’t has an issue with poultry then I would recommend it if you’re a kibble feeder.

Jennifer have you called Dr. Dodd’s office or the number on your Nutri-Scan test and spoken to them about these results? Explaining to them that you are questioning the results? Perhaps they can re do the test free of charge.

I believe Nutri-Scan has the popularity that it does because of Dr. Dodd’s reputation. She has done fabulous research in regard to the thyroid. I had my allergy girl do the Nutri-Scan test a while back and outside of everything I already knew I really did not get any new information with the exception that it showed her to be sensitive/intolerant of white fish. Funny thing is it’s one of the few foods that Katie does really really well on. Just saying. I follow Dr. Dodd’s work because one of my other dogs is treated for hypothyroidism for many years. I’m not saying the test results for your dog are inaccurate, I’m just saying that there can be some issues with the test.

I figured out all of Katies food issues through a very long time of trial and error and a process of elimination of ingredients not necessarily having to do with the main protein in the food. Her biggest is that she cannot deal with any fowl whatsoever regardless of where it is on the ingredient list. Initially I thought it was just chicken. Turned out is was anything having feathers. Good Luck!

LabTX. The OC Raw recall is for salmonella concerning their turkey. As Marie suggested, please take a minute and read up on the recall. I can’t remember off hand which states it affected. Not too many. Oh, it was a voluntary recall if that makes any difference. Nice when companies don’t have to be hit over the head to do a recall.

I’m not sure I understand your post completely. You said that when you switched Sadie to turkey is when you noticed more yeast/allergy problems returning. Then you added beef and now you think she’s allergic to beef. Wouldn’t that have made her allergic to turkey? Did you add the beef to her turkey dinner or you just switched her to beef with no turkey? If it was the turkey dinner the yeast and intolerance issues would take at least a few days to calm down even when switching to a different protein. Your post is a bit confusing, at least to me.

I don’t think I’ve ever read any of your posts on this site and others that you’ve ever mentioned any other products but AllProvide.

Yep, C4D. That’s typical in raw fed dogs. They almost like regress into younger dogs. Their health and energy goes way up. I believe it’s the elimination of all the processed foods and grains and gmo ingredients. The truth is we really are what we eat. I never gave that much thought until Katie came into my life and I had to deal with all sorts of food issues. I always say I would be so much healthier if I ate closer to what I feed my dogs. I am too much of a junk food, no time each what I can grab along the say type of person. Plus….I hate to cook unless the mood strikes me.

I placed an order while it was free shipping. Marie, we feed rotationally so why not. I know some say it’s to high in fat and I agree with a lot of the raw that I feed but if we’re feeding in rotation and not all the time for ever single meal every day, why not? Free shipping? Yep!!!!

Hi Linda G. Here is the list of commercial raw frozen foods that I feed. I rotate my dogs food. I rotate brands and proteins within the brands with the exception of any fowl as Katie, allergy girl, can’t tolerate any fowl. I have been at the point where I rotate with every meal for quite a while now. Nutritionally I find rotation is the best way to feed. Also by rotating as often as I do no body ever gets bored with a meal nor do they know what to expect to find in their bowl.
OC Raw Frozen, Primal Raw Frozen Formulas, Answer’s Detailed Raw Frozen, Vital Essentials Raw Frozen, Nature’s Logic Raw Frozen, Nature’s Variety Raw Frozen,

    Primal Freeze Dried
    Vital Essentials Freeze Dried

The Honest Kitchen Dehydrated Zeal (The Honest Kitchen is not a raw food but I do sometimes have it in rotation for the occasional time when something hasn’t defrosted enough for me to feed). I also happen to like the company for the fact that their foods are made in a human food manufacturing plant so I thought I should reward and buy their food for that fact alone. Just my thing, though. No other dog foods are made there.

I agree with Marie most definitely. Raw, fed properly be it pre made commercial raw diets or home made, is far superior and species appropriate than any kibble you are going to find.

My one question to you is what makes you think your dog is hungry? I believe she’s so excited to eat her meals because she’s loving her food. If she’s maintaining her proper weight than she’s not hungry. Most, if not all dogs, that eat raw get seriously excited at the mere prospect that their meal is being prepared for them. My three go nuts in the kitchen as soon as they see me go towards the area on the counter that has the kitchen scale that I use to weigh out their food. One will squeal and bark and cry the entire time, the other runs and spins in circles and the other sits and stares at my every move. They all crack me up. They never got excited over kibble or canned for that matter.

zcRiley, I assumed that James S was referring to Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Frozen food not Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Boost. I could have misinterpreted that post of his.

James S. As zcRiley posted, Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Boost is not considered a raw food at all. It’s basically kibble with a few freeze dried bits in it.

    Dori
    Member

Sorry James S. Just saw your earlier post. I’m glad at least the diagnosis was for the more treatable one. What treatment has your vet suggested? Yes, Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Frozen is a frozen food and one of the one’s I feed my dogs in rotation.

As to a list of commercial raw frozen foods, these are the ones that I use in rotation. I rotate brands and proteins within brands with the exception of fowl. One of my girls is intolerant of all fowl.

Answer’s Detailed Raw Frozen (Not always easy to track down but any store that carries any of the products can usually order it in for you from their distributor)

Primal Raw Frozen Formulas (My favorite of all frozen raw foods)
    Vital Essentials Frozen Raw
    Nature’s Logic Raw Frozen
    OC Frozen Raw
Darwin’s Raw Frozen (only available on their site on auto-delivery plan)
    Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Frozen
(Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Frozen will be the easiest to find as pretty much everyone carries it including the large stores like Petco and Petsmart.)

The others on the list are typically found in smaller more local type pet food stores.

I’ve recently won a bag of Steve’s Real Frozen Raw (very excited about that) and I’ll see how that works out with the girls. It just arrived yesterday so I’ll defrost some for their dinner tonight. I’ll let you know about that one after they’ve eaten it for a while.

The only two freeze dried foods that I use, but only infrequently, is Primal Freeze Dried and Vital Essentials Freeze Dried. I use Vital Essentials Freeze Dried Tripe Treats as their treats when I call them to “come” from the yard. I keep a jar with them near the back patio door and it’s the only time they get them.

I forgot to add that once in a while, not often, I feed The Honest Kitchen Zeal formula. It contains no fowl, no potatoes, no alfalfa. Is GMO free. The Honest Kitchen is made with all human grade ingredients and made in a plant that only processes human food. It’s all documented and the FDA allows them to use the information on their packaging. It’s the only company that the FDA has given it’s approval to.

Hi James S. Well, first before contemplating anything relating to the cost of foods you’ll need to get the results of her tests. If it is not any type of cancer, and I sincerely pray it’s not, then I would advise you to make the leap and switch Nefertiti to commercial frozen raw diets. I think it is the healthiest and most appropriate species diets that are out in the market. I’ve been feeding them with my three for over 3 1/2 years. Yes, initially they may seem more expensive than kibble but in reality they are not. You feed less raw than kibble. They are more able to utilize raw than kibble. Vet visits have dwindled down to once a year for their physical. Hannah goes twice a year because she’s has hypothyroidism and blood has to be checked. That’s it. They always eat their meals, they love meal time and are always happy playful dogs. I feed high protein, moderate to high quality fats, and low carb diets. The easiest way to accomplish that, and the healthiest way, is with raw diets. I go the commercial frozen raw diet route rotating brands and proteins. Quite frankly, I’m too lazy to put raw diets together myself nor do I wish to. It’s also not how I want to spend my time. I sign up to all the raw food companies that I use to their email newsletter program and they email me coupons which helps a little with the cost. Oh, also with commercial raw diets in rotation the only dog that I need to add supplements to, and it’s not a need just a guess on my part, is Hannah who will be 16 in September. Things slow down and don’t quite work as appropriately as they did when they, and we, were young. Let us know the results of tests please. Praying for Nefertiti and the rest of your family.

Oh thank you so much Lazaro B. Hannah has been a blessing to my husband and I. She got us through a really horrendous time in our life when our only child, our son, passed away almost 9 years ago. Forced me to get out of bed and take care of her, walk with her, play with her and laugh and be entertained by her. I think she took care of us more than we knew was possible for such a little girl, she weighs all of 7 lbs. Otherwise……who knows????

She was diagnosed over a year ago with a tumor in her bladder and a mass on the lobe of one of her lungs and very high liver levels. Last vet check up last week….tumor and mass cell remain the same, no growth. She continues to remain asymptomatic to her illnesses. Liver levels back down to normal. She’s as spunky and playful as ever. We love her dearly. She runs around all day long playing with her “sisters”, our 5 1/2 year old Maltipoo and Yorkipoo. They have all bonded and are a joy and entertaining to watch. I do my best by her and the other two. She’s somewhat regressed since we brought the other two puppies into the family. She thinks she’s as young as they are. She’s got a little night blindness and doesn’t hear as well as she used but, hey…..aging is not for the feint of heart. I don’t see or hear or move as well as I used to either.

Lazaro. If you are feeding a high quality dog food from a company you trust then no, I see no reason to add any vitamin supplements to their food. If you have a dog that is a senior or ill, then the only vitamin supplement that I would recommend is from Standard Process. Canine Whole Dog Supplement.

I’m a commercial raw feeder to my three dogs. The only one that gets a vitamin supplement daily is Hannah, my Maltese. She’ll be 16 years old in September.

Oh My Goodness. I forgot to mention that about a month or so ago I started giving Hannah Traumeel for her generic arthritic issues. It has truly been a Godsend for her. It’s homeopathic and it’s main ingredient is Arnica. It has worked much better for her than Tramadol or Rymadel. Someone on another FB page told me about it and then PM’d me re dosing. I bought it on Amazon but just today so it at a compounding pharmacy that I have to go to for some of my meds.

I give all three dogs Sentinel Spectrum once every 30 days. Hannah gets Denamarin every single day 1 – 1 1/2 hours before dinner every single day. I don’t give milk thistle separate for either of the other two. I’ve been giving all three (and other dogs I’ve had in my 66 years) heart worm medication all their lives every 30 days. I got a little negligent at one point over the winter and then I read losul’s HW with Turbo and decided to get back to their routine. Milk thistle I think is contraindicated, I THINK, from what I’ve read….maybe Shawna????, don’t remember….for a few days after because maybe it intensifies the HW?????? Don’t really remember. It was so long ago. Maybe it had something to do with milk thistle and vaccinations???? Wish I remembered so I could give you a clearer picture. My routine for my girls is Sentinel every 30 days regardless. Hannah gets Denamarin which contains milk thistle every single day. Katie and Lola never get milk thistle or Denamarin as I’ve read research that I shouldn’t give them liver support or kidney support if it’s not necessary. Anyway, this is my routine with my girls and all is going well here. I use a lot of holistic and homeopathic things in my home but I don’t experiment with the dogs. My routine has worked for them and losul’s experience with Turbo honestly scared the crap out of me. My girls are way too small to deal with HW treatments. I know a lot of people are against HW preventative, that’s not me. Vets in my area still use the arsenic cure for HW. I can’t imagine putting teeny tiny dogs through arsenic poisoning in hopes it kills the heart worms and doesn’t suffocate the dogs while the “cure” is happening. I’ve been using Sentinel Spectrum since it’s introduction a while back and no adverse reactions with any of the girls. Living in the South (Georgia) we have a lot to deal with. Fleas, ticks, worms, what have you.

Hi jakes mom. I give all three of my girls 1/4 tsp. once a day of organic virgin coconut oil (I like the brand CocoTherapy best). I’ve seen big differences in their skin and coat with the coconut oil.

Once a week or so I split a can of sardines packed in water with no salt between the three of them. Hoping to help balance out or at least give them a little extra omega 3’s.

Hannah who will be 16 in September gets Standard Process Canine Whole Body Support, Standard Process Enteric Support, SP Canine Hepatic Support, and SP Flex Support once a day. I can’t really say that I see all the benefits from these supplements but I know at her age things may be starting to break down or at least not as efficient as they once were. The Enteric and Hepatic are for liver and kidney support.

Vitamin E soy free (Mercola). I give Hannah 200 i.u. every morning in her breakfast. Katie and Lola get 100 i.u. Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays. I pinch the capsules and squirt on their food. The vitamin E was suggested to me by one of her specialists. Figured it couldn’t hurt the other two girls to get a little three times a week now that they are 5 1/2 years old.

Hannah is also on Denamarin once a day approx. 1 – 1 1/2 hours before her dinner meal. Also for liver support. (Denamarin is a chewable and it’s a combination of SamE and Milk Thistle also prescribed by two of her vets. (In case you don’t remember Hannah has a tumor in her bladder and a mass on the lobe of one of her lungs…both inoperable not that we would have put her through it at her age anyway). Her liver levels as of last months blood work are back to normal. High end of normal but at least not sky high as they were last year.

I believe that these supplements, and most especially, her commercial raw frozen diet in rotation with brands and proteins is what has kept her symptomatic to these cancers even though she was diagnosed and confirmed by two other specialists a little over a year ago.

I also diffuse a few different essential oils in the house that are suppose to be good for tumors and cancers. Are they really working???? Don’t know. But they certainly can’t hurt her. Neither of the tumors have grown since they were diagnosed. She likes to lay near the diffusers so at least she likes the scents.

Sorry for editing so many times but I just remembered that you asked how old our dogs are. Hannah is 7.3 lbs., Katie is 6 lbs. and Lola is 5 lbs.

Hi Labs. I don’t remember whether your signed up at Susan Thixton’s site. (truthaboutpetfood.com). If your not, please sign up to get her newsletters and alerts. I almost always get notified from her site much faster than any other site I’m signed up with. There are times that I’ve gotten alerts from her site a day or two before other sites send me alerts. I received her email alert on May 3rd.

    D. O. I would find a food for Lily that would harden up her stool a bit more. My three dogs stools are just this side of what one would consider hard and they don’t have anal gland problems. Their stools are not completely ash like but towards that. Don’t go to the extreme that they are constipated, just almost, they need that to be able to empty their anal glands.

Dog Obsessed. I have also read, heard, and been told that anal glands should not be expressed on a regular basis and, in fact, if you take your dogs to groomers the groomers should be told not to express their anal glands. You can find many many articles from learned doctors on the subject. They should also not be removed unless, of course, in cases of tumors or cancer. I’m sure that’s not Lily’s problems or your vet would already be aware of it.

I’ve tried to read thoroughly the posts here on this never and if I missed it I’m sorry for asking but….did you mention anywhere what the consistency is of Lily’s poops? In almost every case that is the reason for anal issues and scooting. Either their poops are not hard enough to push through and squeeze out the scent through the anal glands along with the poop or the scooting is due to a diet intolerance/sensitivity or allergy and their butt is itchy and they scoot to scratch or lick it because it’s itchy or burning in feel to them.

Darwin’s is reviewed. Check on the review side under raw foods. If you are looking to see Darwin’s on the Editor’s Choice list, I doubt very highly that it will ever show up there because Darwin’s is not readily available to all. It has to be ordered from their web site on an auto delivery service and not everyone can afford the delivery fees which are not outrageous for a raw frozen food but when added to the cost of the food it’s a bit high for most. But anyway, Darwin’s cannot be bought in stores.

Or maybe the report button could be more in the middle away from the reply. Thanks for confirming that there had been one. I like your suggestion though about confirming the flag or report. There are a few times that people on the forum side really needed to be reported much sooner than they were deleted.

Didn’t there used to be a flag button or a report button on the forums something like that? I could have sworn there was.
