The meds, new home is causing havoc on his system. Doggie should be in home with experienced owner who has resources, knowledge, etc. if you cannot locate thru your rescue and you take this labor of love on…..please note, the fat in his diet will likely worsen his condition. 99% fat free chicken breast is available in freezer section in our local Florida market, (packaging “says” 99%), hopefully you can locate, also steamed sweet potato; small amount given in intervals throughout the day to determine his tolerance. NO DRY MEAL. Our dog has irritable bowel, now controlled thru this diet, expensive but it’s helped. The stomach needs time to heal. Susan gave logical advice. Wish you were our neighbor, would be happy to assist. Best wishes for a healthy turn around for your pup.

Having two doxies that are greater than 16y.o., we’ve been thru the gamut trying kibble, canned food and of course, treats. In addition to reading the outsourcing of pet food and unreliable processing, we have made homemade meals for our babes. Refer to the below link and obtain further knowledge of all the hidden ingredients thru processing. Our one dog is hyper-sensitive, only breast of chicken (raised w/vegetables/99% fat free )and steamed sweet potato. It’s a lot of work with prepping but gives peace of mind. I swear by it. Good luck with your babies.

Call the company and inquire. I’d focus on the panting and obtain tests. A food journal is the only way to determine what she can tolerate. I used organic Paul Newman kibble which was the only one they would eat. The scant meat was placed in food processor and mixed with some kibble. No longer use kibble they are 16y.o., teeth are good and blood tests also good. But keep them on home cooked food and observe any ill-signs. Every one seems to have less food tolerance as we age, as well as dogs; have to keep a watchful eye. I’ve purchased 99% fat free chicken breast , however, dogs with allergies can’t tolerate. No fat, if possible. Remember, FOOD JOURNAL. Best of luck.

Hi Simon.. I have two dachshunds….the .only kibble they would eat is Paul Newman organic. You can buy from publix (Florida store, you may find in your town too) it’s affordable but stay away from Beneful, and Purina products. I have small doxies and the homemade care is well worth the effort and peace of mind. So many pet foods are outsourced. My doxies are 16y.o., and healthy but one has periodic irritable bowel. So now it’s only breast of chicken, boiled sweet potato and vit. B. They are doing great. Had many years of trying kibble brands, and home cooked food but as they are older this diet works well for them, limited fat and small amount of protein. Blood labs and teeth are great for their age.

My one Doxie is very afraid of the Florida thunderstorms. I put on her thunder shirt, she routinely goes to a safe room that she likes and waits it out. (When she was a pup the breeder had her and other pups in the garage where the storms were louder and we’re sure caused her fear). There’s also from the health food store “rescue remedy/calming flower drops” which also helps her anxiety.

Best of luck with your fur baby

I feel for you all. Just a brief description of my 16 y.o. Dachshund with irritable bowel disease. Started slightly about 1.5 yrs ago….now extremely intolerable to fat. Sorry to say but home cooked is the only way to know they aren’t eating out-sourced foods. It’s a lot of work, takes discipline and patience but once you discover the best for your golden baby, you’ll feel best for her/him. 1. Trial test…..small amount of sweet potato (plain), scant amount of fresh fish (I buy haddock) or if tolerated, plain “breast of chicken” ….then wait for two hours and “watch for digestive , panting, yawning, or unusual body sign. ” 2. Feed again at lunch 1/4 cup and “watch”.

Only once, I saw my other Doxie “yawning, pacing floor, digging on carpet in distress and we knew she was bloated from her food (gave her broccoli). Don’t doubt yourself. You can see when they aren’t themselves.

Of note, I don’t trust the vet prescription diets but when our doggies are in extreme distress you have to trust that it will help and that its only temporary ….until you find the right choice. I use on occasion , hills digestive glucose, approx two tbsp and mix in with organic brown rice, scant, no fat, breast of chicken (for her to smell something good is in there. Went online recently because of desperate need to help her and bought from “pet health natural nutrition” a line of digestive care, one of which seems to really help…it has freeze dried aloe Vera which is extremely helpful with digestion. Wishing you and your fur baby the best and to uncover the diet that will keep her/him healthy and happy. Take care.

    Thank you, Acroyali and Susan.

My little DOXIE is 16 y.o. (she lost her kid sister on 2/20/17). We are both each other’s shadow. I failed to mention she’s on digestive enzymes and probiotics, and an anti-inflammatory by the ” pet health and nutrition center.” Also have their diarrhea relief formula, just in case of relapse. I was leaning on the symptom she may not have enough acid, but wish there is an easier test than biopsies, etc. just using logic by Comparing my digestive symptom of not enough acid…..the vinegar rids my heartburn immediately. Tonight her breath is a bit better. Her one symptom of a small burp after eating tells me she is still not digesting properly. She does not vomit and rarely expels gas, thank goodness. Also, she had anal gland removal. I don’t favor dog food by companies. Seen too many disturbing recalls, even by high-end co’s. Use to have her on some kibble (Paul Newman), but no longer. Gave her some Brags several times, no positive result. Again, comparing my symptom of low acid, I actually improved by taking betaine Hcl…….certainly not giving her that type. For several weeks took vets suggestion and used science diet Wd, which bulked up her stool mixed in with homemade ckn and sweet potato. It calmed the mucus in stool and bouts of diarrhea w/blood. The Flagyl worked great, one vet said she could be on it for long term, the other vet stated flagyl could cause neurological problems and not to use long term. For the last month my girl is bothered now by teeth chattering which I’m very concerned it may be onset of focal motor seizure. So no more flagyl. Will have to do the replace and reintroduce methods. I may try now the acv mixed in with food and then offset w/ Omeprazole . Thank you, as I appreciate your suggestions and experience. Btw, she’s taking a road trip w/family to Colorado next week.. She absolutely loves road trips, her previous owner took her and her 12 siblings all over the states for dog shows. She’s had four litters by the age of five. She’s got a busy life and loved by our family for 11 years now. We just want to tweek out of our little DOXIE another 5-10 years of loving hugs.
    Thank you both again.
