The vast majority of dog food manufacturers use GMO ingredients. Most corn, sugar beets, soy and alfalfa grown in the US is now GMO. A very few companies are in the process of trying to get to 100% GMO free as a goal. Even companies listed here as non GMO, if you write to the manufacturer, they say they are not actually GMO free. They may protest that they only have a small percentage. I suppose that’s better than a higher percentage. You can look at foods such as Petcurean “Gather”, Organix, The Honest Kitchen among others. Anything organic is non-GMO, but non-GMO is not necessarily organic.

It would be interesting to have a “Pre-mix” rating category along with wet food, dry food and raw…
I just received the following from “Urban Wolf” who makes base mix : “None ingredients are gmo, some are organic. And we do not add any artificial vitamins , all vitamins are naturally sourced”

Horizon Legacy rates as an excellent premium food and has larger kibble. About 1/2″ round and 1/4″ deep. I actually wish it were smaller because it’s a bit too large for my medium dogs, otherwise I would be feeding it. Of course, premium dog food costs more, but worth every penny.

This discussion is very timely for me, been using Natural Balance for training (3 dogs) and breaking them up, but just last night I noticed they have molasses and other “sweet” ingredients so I’m looking for something else. I have used ZiwiPeak, they’re easy to break for training and the dogs love them, but sometimes can crush into unusuable crumbs. I do feel concerned about using freeze dried treats for training because I want to make sure the dogs get enough water. Looking for healthy, quality ingredients, nothing artificial, non-GMO is a plus, and preferably no sweeteners. I prefer it be made and sourced in the USA but I don’t object to other countries if it’s quality food. China is a no. Anything with that spongy/gummy texture makes one of my dogs vomit. We use Best Bully Sticks for long term chewing.

If it’s not medically problematic, you could add green beans, carrots or other veggies to the daily diet, and/or you could consider feeding 50% wellness and 50% U/D. But truly, you should bring your concerns to the vet and discuss them, they are valid. There may be other foods besides U/D that you could try.
