I’ve said it before and say it again, I credit Canada’s Champion Foods’ Orijen for the excellent health of my two big rescue dogs, one turning 13 on Dec. 31 and the other turning 14 in March 2016. Love the food and the video showing the locals who provide the ingredients for their one processing facility. Check it out.
Nancy BMemberGiven a choice, I would definitely avoid Diamond products. Compare its record with Champion foods that brings in fresh regional ingredients, never frozen, and makes the Orijen on site. If you can spare 12 minutes, watch the Champion video, Our Story. I found it compelling and have since seen the results in my old rescue dogs. People laugh and can’t believe Libby and Annie are 12 and 13, so beautiful and full of life.
Nancy BMemberSusan R: We’re told our pets like variety, same as humans. I add the Tbsp canned Castor & Pollux to enhance the meal, alternating between Lamb/Veg/Brown Rice Stew and Chicken/Veg. Once in a while I add a little low fat cottage cheese if I have some, or hand them a few fresh apple slices for a treat. Try 1/8 cup of organic fresh greens when you’re having salad; chop and mix it in. Go slow, but surprising what they might like.
Nancy BMemberSusan: I adopt senior rescues, 9 years and up. I feed Champion’s Origen and note soft, thick fur, good energy, no vet bills, just an annual checkup. And I have no idea what they were fed in their past. I add Tbsp canned Castor & Pollux, and give an Omega-3 capsule for supplement. My two are now 12 and 13 and going strong.
Nancy BMemberYou might want to go online and read the problems with Blue Buffalo. That’s why no ratings.
I order Castor & Pollux from Chewy online. If you buy enough, it’s free shipping. I also feed and order from them my kibble, Champion Foods Orijen, 5 stars, .
Nancy BMemberI agree that THK is excellent food. It’s what brought my 2 old rescues to good health. When the price when up, I had to look elsewhere. Champion Foods Orijen and Acana filled the spot. Same wonderful food, less expensive maybe because it’s from Canada? If you want to rotate food, look at video and try Champion. No vet bills for 12- and 13-yr-olds.
Nancy BMemberRescue dogs did well on THK, but so expensive and then price went up. Look at Champion Foods Acana and Orijen, both 5 stars. Nice video. Shows where ingredients come from. I add Tbsp Wysong canned to the kibble. 12- and 13-year-old dogs have no health problems so no vet bills. I order from Chewy online.
Nancy BMemberMonique: Here we go again with ‘Blue’. Over 1000 consumer complaints scared me!

Nancy BMemberJennifer:
My two senior rescue dogs loved their THK and I stuck with it for 2 years, struggling with the price. Recently i switched to another food when our vet found no reason looking at lab results why one dog had been losing weight and excessively urinating. I switched to Champion Foods’ 5-star Orijen and all symptoms disappeared and the cost is 1/3 that of THK. Champion makes Acana and Orijen, but someone mentioned a problem with puppy Acana, so I don’t know.
Nancy BMemberI nominate Wysong’s Epigen
Nancy BMemberCheryl: The Honest Kitchen is on the 5 Star list. Pricy but good. I just switched to Champion Foods Orijen because the THK food jumped a lot in price. Orijen is just as fresh and wholesome and I’m saving $125/month; free shipping from Chewy. Dogs love it. See Champion Foods video.
Nancy BMemberTera: After 2 years I am priced out of Honest Kitchen, although it’s a great food. Sudden $8 increase for 10 lbs was costing me $225/month for 2 dogs. Now with Orijen (Champion Foods) I pay $75.99 for 2 ounces less than a month’s worth of Honest Kitchen and it’s the same good, natural food. Watch the Champion canine food video introducing the guy who supplies the fish, farmer who supplies the meat, farmer who supplies veggies, fresh eggs. etc. Way out there in Alberta, it’s an impressive facility, 5 stars. Also sell Arcana. I am getting free shipping by Chewy.
Nancy BMemberBelva: Read the 866 very sad stories about animal owners feeding Blue Buffalo that are on the Consumer Affairs accreditation site.

Nancy BMemberAnd I recently found this on a Consumer Complaint list re: Blue Buffalo:

Nancy BMemberAlthough pricey, I don’t think you can beat human-grade food like SoJo’s or The Honest Kitchen for senior dogs. I adopt seniors from all backgrounds, and on these foods they become strong, immune to disease, strong heart, lungs, kidneys, and generally thrive. Currently my two rescues are 12 and soon-to-be 13. The oldest is a recovered heart worm girl from the South that I adopted at 9.
Nancy BMemberHow about The Honest Kitchen and Sojo’s? Both use human grade ingredients with carefully chosen providers of ingredients. Check them out.
